OC-Tober: Day 17. Dealing with Conflict
As Empress of the most war fueled Empire the continent has ever known, Zannah has been whispered behind her back of being more of a mob boss than a monarch. She would argue she just sees the reality of the struggle for nations that can't afford peace.
Truthfully, the Empire hasn't had to engage in open warfare since the War of Fire with Hyrule. But as a recovering nation, Zannah has been no stranger to conflicts, from without and within the Empire. Conflicts from outside the Empire by an external force would be dealt with extreme force. If the hostile force was animalistic, such as a monster, Zannah would direct her forces to wipe them out. If it was a sentient species she found while claiming island nations, Zannah would approach the matter at first with a delicate touch.
First, she would offer the species a place in the Empire. All they would receive in return for loyalty to the throne would be protection in the Empire and have a place among its citizens. The people known as the Dal took this offer. Another species, such as the Rakashi did not. When this happens, a strong display of force, even bloodshed, is required to change opinions in favour of supporting the Empire.
Finally, Zannah has been been quick to crack down on any threats to her Empire from the people within. More specifically, the higher up generals in her council who thought they would easily control a 'broken' and 'defeated' in the years after the War of Fire. Once she safely delivered her twins to produce viable safe guards to continue the royal line, she challenged the most vocally negative voices against her to open mortal combat. Once these voices were silenced, she replaced them with younger minds. Since then, she's had an open policy that if anyone wished her removed her from the throne, all they need do is challenge in a similar matter.

seconding magic tattoos! if that were a thing that could be suggested.
Eeeeee a Hasai story.
So I mentioned (I think) a couple-or-few weeks back that I was starting to look into what Hasai’s human form would look like (since that’s data I’m going to need when we get to his novella in the Tales of the Five group). And what the heck: after some shopping around, I found it. That’s his basic shape, there.
It suits him for a number of reasons. It’s easy to forget (if not being attentive to backstory) that despite having become the most senior Dragon presently resident on that Earth, in terms of out-of-the-egg time, he’s also the youngest. He was the last-hatched Dragonet before the Journey, which makes him “now” (in story continuity) fully adult, but still in his earliest adult years in Dracon terms–just a skinny young guy. His magic-using spouses, though, while devising his human body for him, wouldn’t have forgotten.
(And the design stages would’ve been interesting. While considering this the other day I abruptly found myself in the middle of a humorous but fairly heated discussion regarding the usefulness/uses of nipples for entities identifying as male. I made some notes for story purposes, but escaped as quickly as possible… because, seriously, when Freelorn gets started in talking-dirty mode?…) (eyeroll)
…Anyway. That’s merely his human shape; there’s more design to be done. Dragons are culturally extremely sensitive about their hide and spine colors. “Livery” (as Segnbora translates the far more deeply-nuanced Dracon term) is profoundly important to Dragons for historical and personal reasons, being a visible indicator of family history and other issues. And even in human form, there’s no way Hasai would completely discard his original skin.
So this is a first stab at it. Various creators platformed at Daz offer products that let you do skin-on-skin overlays. This is going to work a lot better once I figure out how to add a proper overlay of scales rather than a texture labeled “Blood Zombie”. :) …But the color’s generally right, and it’ll do for the moment while I experiment.
…Duplicating scaling made of living black star sapphire is going to be an entirely different challenge. But for the moment I’m taking one thing at a time.

Hasay, hasay.

Erwodog.
Go figure.
Now trying to imagine what a dragon with a name like that would look like, and getting definite Welsh or Brythonic vibes in the process, maybe as a reult of reading "Men Went To Cattraeth" and then "Y Goddodin" a month or so back.
Chrysophylax, Smaug, Ancalagon, Ymareth and Hasai it most certainly isn't.
(Not Vermithrax Pejorative, either.)
YOUR DRAGON NAME
last two letters of your first name
middle two letters of your last name
first two letters of your mother’s name
last letter of your father’s name
mine would be Urlelan. Reblog and tag this with yours!

OC-Tober: Day 14. Attempt at Seduction
As traditional love has never quite been Zannah's forte, the Empress always showed her affections through displays of power. To show off her power, to do so in a way that compliments another, is her way of showing respect, or even love.
Before the War grew darker, she saw swordplay and battle with Princess Rinku as a form of subtle seduction, even if Zannah didn't know it. It made her heart race and her blood burn with warmth when she fought another young woman such as herself with equal skill in battle. The dance between life and death as steel clashed. One could argue that when Zannah was kissed in the middle of combat that without the foreplay and subtlety she didn't quite know what to do.
Now that she is far older and has found love in Annuciata, that dance is far more less metaphoric. She wants nothing more than to show her love that she is a phoenix to the Hasai, a woman who could give new purpose and life to her. She sees sharing power with this one woman the most seductive thing she can grant. And anyone she shares power with is going to feel like they are more beautiful and powerful than any human limitations can allow.

Comprehensive List of Force Users
Jedi Masters
Hu Aszong
Titles: High General, General, Jedi Master
Bio: A Kel Dor Jedi who has trained several Jedi before his padawan, Aurak’razi. Hu is a thoughtful man, whose lessons are not always what his headstrong padawan wants to hear. His age brought him a lot of patience to put up with a great deal and he often finds that being patient eventually means they will learn. He is not often one for a practical joke, though when the mood strikes him, he can become a menace to whoever chooses to enter the same room as him. Hu specializes in healing through the force which makes him perfect for dealing with headstrong padawans who get hurt a great deal. One of hu’s other padawans was none other than Almenia Costa.
Pavi Bevu Dooku
Titles: High General, General, Jedi Master, Countess of Sereno
Bio: A half Zabrak half Human Jedi Master who, by accident, is a second-generation Jedi Master. Her mother was half Iridonian and half Dathomirian, leading to Pavi getting the traditional Nightbrother Tattoos that were her blood right as an infant. She was apprenticed to Yan Dooku, partially out of Dooku’s guilt for what happened to her mother and partially because he wanted to train her so she could be the best Jedi she could possibly be. She lost both of her arms to an explosion as a padawan and had to relearn how to do most things relating to fighting and day to day actions. She trained Jedi Knights Alana Oreson and Ramirhe Jacora. She primarily teaches lightsaber combat forms to younglings and padawans in the Jedi temple. Pavi is a very centered Jedi who is more likely to have fun than people give her credit for. She spends a great deal of time keeping tabs on Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and the antics he has gotten himself into
Jaan Kuran
Titles: High General, General, Jedi Master
Bio: A Human Jedi Master who ended up taking on Matahd Sa as her third padawan. She is not the first Jedi to pick a fight and tends to be more relaxed when it comes to padawans. She is a fairly calm and relaxed Jedi who is willing to take the time to bring out the best in anyone, no matter how long it takes and no matter how odd it looks.
Arif Bageeh
Titles: High General, General, Jedi Master
Bio: A Mirakula Jedi Master who trained two padawans before Baves Urety. Arif spent much of his time before the clone wars traveling the galaxy to learn more about the force, which included spending several years on Dathomir between his first two padawans, as a result, sometimes when he uses the force it resembles Daothmirian magiks. Arif is very open about his feelings when it comes to his padawans. He is a bit less open about his relationship with fellow Jedi Master, Jaro Tapal, but that is a consequence of his time as a jedi. Even though Arif is blind, as all Mirakula are, he can still see through the force and specializes in force visions. He is a talented fighter who uses a dual bladed green lightsaber, though due to his relationship with Jaro Tapal, they often switch lightsabers to the point that some of his padawans don’t know which lightsaber is actually his. Arif had an almost eternally optimistic outlook that only shattered when he was around Jaro Tapal, or if his padawan was not present. Over the years he has collected a surprising amount of random skills, including fixing droids, ships, first aid, and how to mix drinks.
Almenia Costa
Titles: High General, General, Jedi Master, Hero of Corellia
Bio: She was a Togruta Jedi master who only trained Matahd Sa as her padawan. She spent much of her time arguing over little things with her padawan though cared deeply about him. She specialized in using shatterpoints in the force during lightsaber combat, and she had hoped that her particular specialization would help her teach Matahd how to let go of other’s emotions. Almenia was very proud of her padawan and was always willing to brag to any Jedi who would listen. She ended up dying over Corellia and left behind a holocron, lightsaber hilt, and robe for her padawan.
Jedi Knights
Alana Oreson
Titles: Jedi Knight
Bio: A half Mirilian half Human Jedi Knight who mostly helps with the younglings. She is a highly skilled healer who does not often go out into fights, finding she can help more in the temple, healing the many Jedi who get hurt during the course of the war. Much like her master, she is very calm and patient, though if the need arises she is a skilled duelist who is not to be trifled with. Alana often lets herself get roped into pranks lead by padawans and younglings against other Jedi Knights. She has considered taking on a padawan several times but never committed.
Ramirhe Jacora
Titles: General, Jedi Knight, Count of Clan Jacora
Bio: A Human who comes from Concordia. His family is a long line of proud mandalorians, and while he has read a great deal about them, he has only been to his home Star System twice. Ramirhe is a headstrong and selfless Jedi who would much rather put himself in danger than anyone else. He lost his left leg as a young knight protecting Senator Alyeil Laygos. Ramirhe, like his master, is a skilled duelist though he finds most of his comfort in a starfighter where it is less likely he will have an issue with his prosthetic leg. He has a mixed relationship with his origins, and he tries not to talk about it. Though his men all know that he is fluent in Mando’a and he does wear some pieces of traditional mandalorian armor as a part of his Jedi robes. Ramirhe ended up marrying Alyeil about three years before the Clone Wars began, and his marriage is pretty well hidden for the most part (though if you ask his Commander it’s as plain as day). He did train one other padawan before taking on Aubewem. His previous padawan barely becoming a Knight 2 years into the Clone Wars.
Ses Hasai
Titles: General, Jedi Knight
Bio: A Mon Calimari Jedi Knight who specializes in underwater combat. Ses is a fairly cheerful Jedi who is often found meditating or swimming if he can find a body of water that will allow him to swim in.
Jedi Padawans
Matahd Sa
Titles: General, Commander, Jedi Padawan, Jedi Knight, Jedi Master, Hero of Corellia, High General of the Rebellion, Vassal of House Organa
Bio: A Togruta Jedi Padawan who was first apprenticed to Almenia Costa, and then to Jaan Kuran. Matahd is too aware of other’s emotions to the point of it being overwhelming. As a youngling, he would sometimes lose focus on himself and see either what was happing to someone he was closed to or what might happen to someone he was close to. He often argued with his master, Almenia Costa about little things that in truth didn’t matter, though he did respect her. At the beginning of the clone wars he watched as his master and most of his men died in a fight over Corellia. He ended up barely winning the fight, though it almost cost him his life. As a result, any of his surviving men stayed in his command and were called the Corellia 200. He tends to be more reserved and he’s less likely to do something without thinking it through. He also refuses to send people into dangerous situations knowing it might get them killed. At some point, he realizes he has a crush on Clone Commander Eagle, though during the war he never admits this. With Jaan Kuran as his master, he was allowed to hop around different battle assignments to go where he was either most needed or to assist some of the Jedi he knows personally, his preference being Obi-Wan Kenobi or Anakin Skywalker. None of the Corellia 200 call him Commander Sa, they all call him General Sa even though he’s tried to get them to stop since he never makes it an order they don’t have to listen to him.
Shiro Isiabill
Titles: Commander, Jedi Padawan, Jedi Knight, Ambassador of Alderaan
Bio: A Human Jedi Padawan apprenticed to Plo Koon. Shiro was apprenticed to Plo Koon after personally traveling to Dorin to meet with his new master. Plo Koon agreed to take him on as his padawan. He seems to have an uncanny ability to find anything beautiful about a planet he goes to so long as he has had some time to sit down and meditate for a few minutes. Shiro isn’t necessarily likely to argue with his master, but he is very likely to question his master’s choices, mostly because he wants to understand why he is doing something. Shiro is a better pilot than he is a duelist, and as a result, he spends a lot of his time learning how to duel better. At some point, he realizes he has feelings for fellow padawan, Aurak’razi, and the two begin a hesitant relationship. This relationship is one that his master likely suspected even if the two never directly addressed the matter.
Aurak’razi
Titles: Commander, Jedi Padawan, Jedi Knight
Bio: A Twi’lek Jedi Padawan apprenticed to Hu Aszong. She is headstrong and is not afraid to voice her opinion when she believes older Jedi are wrong, though mostly this shows up with her arguing over choices her fellow padawan, Matahd Sa, made personally. Aura has a gift for befriending animals and people alike, even if she rarely uses it to her advantage. At some point, she realized that she had feelings for fellow padawan, Shiro Isiabill, and the two began a hesitant relationship.
Sari Nebi Dendup
Titles: Apprentice, Jedi Padawan, Commander, Princess of Onderon, Queen of Onderon
Bio: A Human Jedi Padawan, former Sith Apprentice, apprenticed to Obi-Wan Kenobi. A princess and heir to the throne of Onderon in the Japrael system, she was given to the temple by her parents as a toddler. Two years into her time at the temple, she was kidnapped by the Dark Jedi, Xanatos. As his apprentice, she learned the ways of the dark side and received some sith tattoos on her forehead and cheek. After Anakin Skywalker became a Jedi Knight, Obi-Wan had an encounter with the young Sari and managed to convince her to give up the fight. Obi-Wan talked her down from being a sith and she agreed to become his padawan. Shortly after, Obi-Wan and Sari had another encounter with Xanatos, leading to Obi-Wan getting knocked out. Sari killed her former master, leading to Obi-Wan being disappointed, though not surprised. Sari is primarily closed off and hesitant to trust people, though she does start to make an effort to be more open to the 212th, leading to a friendship with Waxer and Boil.
Baves Urety
Titles: Commander, Jedi Padawan, Jedi Knight, General
Bio: A half Mirilian half Mirakula Jedi Padawan apprenticed to Arif Bageeh. Baves is a fairly optimistic padawan, even if he sometimes stumbles because of his fear. He often feels safest near his master or within arms reach of any clones. He often acts like a little shadow. Given the right encouragement, Baves could be an excellent healer, though he rarely applies this as a skill. In high-pressure situations when he isn’t near someone he finds familiar, he will often panic or drift into an emotional state where he isn’t in full control, and instead of using the force he gets used by it. Most of the time, he spends his free time with Shade, pulling pranks on Commander A’doxx or learning what he can from the clones.
Aubewem
Titles: Commander, Jedi Padawan, Inquisitor
Bio: A Rattataki Jedi Padawan apprenticed to Ramirhe Jacora. She is a talented force user who has made it clear that she wants to learn from her new master. Sometimes she is very impatient and doesn’t often consider the multitude of reasons she might not be allowed to do something, instead she is likely to challenge her master, something he allows because it provides him with an opportunity to turn it into a learning situation. Eventually, Aubewem gets captured by the empire and spends over a decade as an Inquisitor until an encounter with Matahd Sa where he manages to talk her down and get her back to Ramirhe Jacora, where she relearns how to use the light side of the force.
Uneyu Sum
Titles: Commander, Jedi Padawan
Bio: A Nautolan Jedi Padawan apprenticed to Ses Hasai. She is very sweet and would rather spend her time listening to stories that people could tell than learning how to fight. She spends a great deal of time learning how to assess battles in 3-D environments, which includes underwater combat training- her least favorite task.
Other Force Users
Rosahi Tos
Bio: A Cathar who eventually meets Cal Kestis and gets trained by him. Rosahi was adopted by Greez, where they learned not only how to smuggle, but gamble as well. Rosahi’s unique ability to see shatterpoints in any situation makes them a formidable combatant, and often times it won’t even look like they did anything severe to a person.
Shosh’mebe
Titles: Commander
Bio: A Twi’lek who gets adopted by Eagle and Matahd Sa. She gets trained by Mat in both lightsaber combat and how to use the force. She is a skilled lightsaber combatant, who like her adopted father, opts to use two lightsabers in a fight.
Saseli Laygos Jacora
Titles: Countess of Clan Jacora
Bio: A Human Force user and the daughter of Ramirhe Jacora and Senator Alyeil Laygos born a few months after Order 66. Saseli was trained by her father in combat and in use of the force, though she later chooses to walk away from that and becomes the Countess of Clan Jacora House Kryze.
Tavidal Laygos Jacora
Titles: Ambassador of Lothal, Senator of Lothal, Commander
Bio: A Human Force user and the son of Ramirhe Jacora and Senator Alyeil Laygos born two years before the fall of the Republic. Tavidal was also trained in combat by his father, and uses a great deal of force persuasion in politics as he follows in his mother’s footsteps and becomes a senator under the name Tavidal Laygos. He does get involved with the rebellion and briefly is known as Commander Mirhe Jacora.
Jinn Nebi Dendup
Titles: Prince of Onderon, General
Bio: A Human Force User and the son of Queen Sari Nebi Dendup and Boil, born sometime after the fall of the Empire. Jinn ends up getting trained in the force by Aubewem, to his mother’s eternal amusement and dismay. Much like his mother, he is very sure of himself and will often do what he thinks is right, even if he’s not.

I’ve just finished giving the “Song of Ice and Fire” books another chance, and I think I’ve finally got a handle on the main reason why I can’t get into them the way millions of others have done.
To me, they’re monotonous - mono-tone.
That’s not a comment on being long-winded - after all, they’re a big, sprawling epic fantasy. It’s because it seems to this reader that everything and everyone are variations of a tune played on one string: the world and everyone in it are grim, or ugly, or cruel, or devious, or just doom-laden and depressing.
These are five thick volumes which carefully describe, from different points of view, manure heaps big and small, ancient and modern, foreign and domestic. Yet - unless I blinked and missed it - they don’t spare a single chapter that breaks away from grimdark gloom to take non-cynical pleasure in anything, even the crops and flowers those manure-heaps should help to grow.
Well before I reached the end, it had started to feel as if heaping manure was an end in itself.
And then there’s Tyrion saying this:
“Most of the stories you hear about dragons are fodder for fools. Talking dragons, dragons hoarding gold and gems, dragons with four legs and bellies big as elephants, dragons riddling with sphinxes … nonsense, all of it.”
It’s always worth remembering that The Character’s Opinions Are Not (usually) The Author’s Opinions, but this raised my hackles.
It seems deliberately aimed at Smaug and Glaurung and Chrysophylax, Yevaud and Kalessin and Orm Embar, Hasai, Morkeleb, the witty “real dragon biology” of Peter Dickinson’s “The Flight of Dragons”, a long list of other fictional dragons and every writer who created one.
Cheap shot. Bad show, I think.
*****
ASOIAF is supposedly based on the Wars of the Roses (York / Lancaster = Stark / Lannister) but I’m familiar enough with them to regard the unremitting Westeros brutality as far closer to the Thirty Years War (1618-48) which ravaged central Europe and left the German states in such disrepair that several still hadn’t fully recovered when the country unified in 1870.
ETA: @tartapplesauce points out the 12th-century civil war so savage it’s still called “The Anarchy” (I did some work on a TV show about it called “Pillars of the Earth”). Its principals are Stephen, Henry I’s nephew vs Matilda, Henry I’s daughter. Renly / Robb vs Cersei? Close enough.
Certainly it’s the basis for “The Dance of Dragons” sequence in “Fire & Blood”, yet another GRRM fantasy where grimdark crapsack situations take precedence over everything else. That’s now being produced for TV as “The House of Dragons”, and with luck the original material might get lightened up a bit.
Contemporary chronicles called The Anarchy “a time when Christ and His saints slept.” Check out “Knight in Anarchy” © 1969 by George Shipway, a novel of non-fantasy historical grimdark, highly recommended because of good storytelling and because its brevity (just 250 pages in my paperback version) means it’s less unremittingly, depressingly bleak than Ice and Fire.
*****
By contrast, the period correspondence known as the Paston Letters show that right through the Wars of the Roses, at least one wellborn Lancaster-backing family was more concerned with land sales, wool shipments, litigation and the doings of sons at university than any fear of being Rains-of-Castamered for being Lancaster supporters if York seized the throne.
Instead, though Yorkist monarchs including even (gasp, tremble) Richard III DID seize the throne, and ruled England from 1461 to 1485 with just a brief Lancaster blip from October 1470 to April 1471, nothing Westeros-like ever happened to the Pastons. Instead they went on to flourish under the Tudors.
*****
There was a steady increase in treachery, turncoating, backstabbing and tit-for-tat take-no-prisoners action as the Rose Wars progressed (no war is more uncivil than a civil war) but IMO just one man really mirrored what seems to be standard behaviour in ASOIAF.
John Tiptoft, Earl of Worcester and High Constable of England, was a highly educated, deeply ruthless man who became infamous for “cruelly” impaling the corpses of beheaded traitors.
His enemies nicknamed him “The Butcher”, which is a bit unfair since the standard (non-cruel?) practice with traitors was to hang their quartered bodies up on hooks at places associated with them, and display their heads on pikes, usually above London Bridge - very few period illustrations of that structure lack a cluster of lines-and-dots silhouetted against the sky at one end.
That’s just as butcher-like, but since it was the “proper” way of doing things, it was acceptable. A charge of cruelty would have been far more justified if he’d followed Vlad III Drakulya’s practice of impaling people while still alive. But he didn’t.
Tiptoft was eventually executed himself, and paid his headsman to do the job in three chops to honour the Holy Trinity.
He was a strange, strange man.
*****
GRRM’s oft-quoted comment about “The Lord of the Rings” includes:
“What was Aragorn’s tax policy? Did he pursue a policy of systematic genocide against the orcs and kill them, even the little baby orcs in their little orc cradles?”
That’s something very few of GRRM’s own characters would have any hesitation about doing, and far too many of them would secretly - or openly - enjoy it.
Aragorn’s tax policy is irrelevant to the story.
Aragorn’s orc policy is irrelevant to the story.
As summarised by its full title from the Red Book of Westmarch - “The Downfall of the Lord of the Rings and the Return of the King” - when Sam returns from the Grey Havens to Bag End and says “Well, I’m back”, the story is complete.
Unlike ASOIAF, which isn’t.
*****
In any case, Tolkien’s own writing indicates that orcs were unlikely to be a long-term problem. When Sauron is destroyed his human supporters throw down their weapons, but orcs and trolls kill themselves or flee into hiding with no suggestion that they’ll ever come out again.
There’s an implication that without a superior will to control them, and a higher purpose or common enemy as a focus, their innate aggression will ultimately lead to them wiping themselves out - or declining into scattered gangs of brigands whose mutual hatred will prevent them from ever organising again, while the gangs whittle themselves into oblivion through internal strife.
Tolkien gives examples of how orcs interact even before Sauron’s defeat.
Despite their shared higher purpose of capturing halflings and the imminent threat of a common enemy (the Rohirrim) Uglúk and Grishnákh and their supporters are constantly exchanging threats and insults and occasionally killing each other.
Despite their shared higher purpose of guarding Minas Morgul and Cirith Ungol against the common enemy of suspected enemy spies (Frodo and Sam), and even though they speculate about running away from the Big Bosses and turning brigand, Shagrat and Gorbag and their supporters are soon slaughtering each other over Frodo’s mithril shirt.
Despite their shared higher purpose of hunting down a common enemy - the intruders they’re trailing, Frodo and Sam again - the tracker orc in Mordor shoots his companion Uruk after a threat to report him to one of the Nazgûl for desertion.
“Orcs have always behaved like that, or so all tales say, when they are on their own.”
So says Frodo.
If that’s the case - or if orcs, as corrupted elves, will fade away as the uncorrupted ones have done - then all Aragorn needs to do is wait...
*****
Whatever his other policies might have been, from absolute autocracy to benign feudal neglect, they have to be better than the standard Westeros policy shared by nearly everyone in power, which is to rapeslaughter everyone and burnpillage their goods without pausing to wonder who’ll be left alive to bring in this harvest (or any unburnt, unpillaged bits, anyway) never mind plant the next one.
Because where Westeros is concerned they’d better do that quickly, because Winter Is Coming.
Or worse.
