i'm currently cooking up an au where sakura joins up with orochimaru early on because she demands information about sasuke's curse mark during the chunin exams, and orochimaru tells her she can only understand if she agrees to become their student. and i'm just constantly struck by how interesting that premise is in general, even though i'm probably not doing it justice with my writing. like. sakura, who passed the first stage of the chunin exams without cheating. sakura, who wants to become strong enough to not only be of use to her team, but to actively protect them from harm. sakura, who has an iron will and more guts than most adults around her, who will take a beating directly to her head and still refuse to let go, whose will is literally canonically strong enough to defeat a mind control jutsu, who has to be dragged away from the arena unconscious. sakura haruno, the persistent bud, waiting to bloom, refusing to wither.

and orochimaru. the ouroboros, the immortal, the cycle repeating itself, able and willing to let go of anything except life itself. an eternal dance of rebirth embodied in this child you failed to kill, who has been consistently failing to die ever since. they literally came back from the dead. there were so many moments when they could have, should have, would have died. as a baby, as a child, as a teen, as a young adult. but they can't. they'll drag their own body like a corpse through the desert just to avoid death in its true form. they have a mission to complete, one that they gave themself, one that goes above any moral code, any law, any rule of nature. they keep going. they keep growing, out of spite, becoming better and better, stronger and stronger, growing into everything konoha tried to stop them from becoming.

the birth and life process of a pest is very similar to that of a flower in bad conditions. the process is this: 1. be born, without your consent or approval. 2. acknowledge that your environment is actively rooting against you 3. survive despite it all, and grow with malicious intent, mocking the very soil that failed to strangle you in your infancy.

they both cling to life with both hands and teeth, and tell themselves over and over again, "and then they'll all be sorry."
