Jazz @ The Bolt comes back February 4 & 5 2023
Jazz Impresario Cory Weeds brings a weekend of Jazz to The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, February 4-5. Jazz @ The Bolt brings a line-up of renowned artists from across Canada and around the world to join the best of Vancouver’s talent for one amazing weekend.
Tumblr media
Jazz @ The Bolt welcomes over 25 groups and soloists performing during the day and into the evenings, all under one roof at Burnaby’s premiere cultural venue.   “We’re thrilled to bring Jazz @ The Bolt back to the Shadbolt, live and in person again this year!”, said Weeds. “The vibe at our last gathering was incredibly joyous and celebratory despite COVID restrictions. In 2023, with full-capacity audiences and an even stronger lineup, the event is sure to be better than ever.” An indoor festival experience, (with real chairs!) is a perfect weekend for fans of great music. Jazz fans can roam from room to room to hear some of everything, or settle into one room and enjoy the full sets. Weeds continues, “This year's programming features a varied and extraordinarily talented roster that includes a broad diversity of new, established and veteran artists. There is so much to be excited about, but I'm particularly looking forward to having fellow impresario, pianist Spike Wilner here in the city with one of my favorite saxophonists, Jesse Davis. I'm also delighted to present pianist Miki Yamanaka and her group as well as the brilliant singer, Lezlie Harrison.  Much gets made about the international talent that we bring in but, as always, it’s great to be able to showcase the incredible talent that graces Vancouver stages year-round. The local musicians are what create the fabric of a scene and there are many phenomenally talented musicians here.” Jazz @ The Bolt audiences can expect the following:

RETURNING TO THE RETURN OF NICOLE GLOVER
SMALL’S JAZZ CLUB
1/2/23, 7:30 pm set, with JASON BROWN, Greg Glassman, Peter Bernstein, Miki Yamanaka, and Luke Sellick
12/14/22, midnight set (again), with CURTIS NOWOSAD, Alexis Lombre, and Rick Rosato
COUCH TOUR: 1/20-21/23, 9 pm sets, with DAVID WEISS, Myron Walden, David Bryant, Fanoa Meldenhall or Eric Wheeler, EJ Strickland
First off, NICOLE GLOVER really hasn’t been anywhere except not readily accessible to me via Small’s Live. She had been a regular with a monthly late night gig>jam sessions as the leader, largely with trios. She is smart, serious, and intense and she justifiably went off on the crowd at the 1/27/22 set. She may well have said, no, thank you.
I saw her on a stream of a 92 Y gig curated by Bill Charlap where she played with him (married to her bandleader in Artemis as she has replaced Melissa Aldana), Chris Potter, and Mike Stern. This “return” is her back at Small’s as a member of the band, not leader. She certainly can lead, but it is nice as a listener to simply think about her playing as such. Her new trio with Tyrone Allen and Kayvon Gordon had already given her playing more room and that continues in these contexts as she doesn’t simply roar with an edge.
JASON BROWN is an Oberlin educated drummer who, with classmate Greg Glassman, put together a holiday weekend gig that mostly dug into standards. I had seen the second set (which included a very nice and relaxed moment between Glover and equally smart Miki Yamanaka who copes differently as a woman in this scene) and wanted to go back. There were repeats—veteran Peter Bernstein’s Bones, Monk’s waltz Ugly Beauty in 5, and a tune by Oberlin professor Donal Walden. They also opened with Grant Green’s John Lafleur and closed with a fast riffy (probable standard). I once again enjoyed Glover in this context, having a fuller band to support her—sometimes Yamanaka, sometimes Bernstein—and other soloists to take up space and share ideas. It is likely that her tone has always had such a range, but now, away from the trio, she doesn’t have to pin our ears back. Here she was the relative veteran showing young ‘uns Brown and Glassman how it’s done.
I had seen the short set CURTIS NOWOSAD with the original quartet led at midnight to set up the jam session. Glover was the only horn but Alexis Lombre’s piano was helpful and I want to hear more of her. Nowosad as leader, as he did in the first set, called smart tunes—Monk’s Evidence and the nicely intricate Feed the Fire from Geri Allen—though the last one Parker’s Quasimodo might have been Glover’s suggestion—“it’s just Embraceable You in x flat,” she enthused. She dug into all of them, but to take the last one as the epitome, she resisted the urge to take Parker too fast and she stayed in the middle range.
For the DAVID WEISS sets, she was part of a larger front line that played the leader’s bright, intricate lead sheets but then had to share solo space with him and, new to me, altoist Myron Walden. She was the junior member of that team. I had run across Weiss as part of The Cookers and frankly wondered how he had crashed a party that also included Eddie Henderson also on trumpet, but also Billy Harper, Donald Harrison, George Cables, Cecil McBee, and Billy Hart. I’ll go back to those albums, but they all write, Harper and Cables especially.
Weiss is a fine and capable trumpeter who, to his credit, doesn’t push or go flashy instead of having ideas. But his strength is as a composer and these tunes were rich enough for extended explorations from the front line and robust and tasty pianist David Bryant. There were just three tunes in each set—an unrecorded Freddie Hubbard tune to open Friday night and a Slide Hampton to close Saturday. Weiss’ were all untitled and were much more than riffs with intricacies and voicings that allowed the soloists to explore. Walden and Bryant were the discoveries of the set. Walden is a brawny player who maybe even growled more on his smaller horn than Glover did. Brawny, yes, but lots of ideas. Bryant was always right there as an accompanist but also able to fit in with the edge of the horns when he soloed.
The first night very young Kanoa Meldenhall played bass and given her size it might have been a reduced sized instrument (though she may well have simply extended the peg the least amount. She and Eric Wheeler the next night maybe a bit more prominently pulsed appropriately but neither got solos. EJ Strickland had or took a bit more space but his drums were essential and fit the brashness of the front line.
It was seeing this run later in the week with Glover that set up the listening/watching project for this essay as she is an important, exciting player. I feel like I’ve been able to watch her grow with the trios (Duke/Cacioppo before Allen/Gordon as well as newly discovered duets—a three tune “single” with Alexander Caffy on bass and an album on which she seems to also play some bass clarinet with Cacioppo) and now as a member of the band.
Nate Chinen of the NYT called her a “bad ass” and one of her tunes was called Tenor Jock. She is intense and seems to have a performance game face which is perfectly understandable. She certainly is no nonsense, so when she clapped to punctuate gospelly elements in Bryant’s solo last night or promoted Quasimodo to Nowosad et al or, best of all, that nerdy moment with Yamanaka, it assures me she does have fun doing this as indeed she must.

We became a team, carried out a number of frauds. You`ve deceived numerous amounts of people. You struck them down into hell. As time passed, you started feeling ecstasy from the very act of deception.

Just before I called you, I contacted an acquaintance of mine. He takes care of any problems that might arise. He`ll be here in about another ten minutes and then this dead body will be taken care of without a trace. But if you so decide to refuse my more than generous offer, he`ll be sure to take care of you as well.
