harbinger (n.)
late 15c., herbengar "one sent ahead to arrange lodgings" (for a monarch, an army, etc.), alteration of Middle English herberger "provider of shelter, innkeeper" (late 12c.), from Old French herbergeor "one who offers lodging, innkeeper," agent noun from herbergier "provide lodging," from herber "lodging, shelter," from Frankish *heriberga "lodging, inn" (cognate with Old Saxon, Old High German heriberga "army shelter"), from Germanic compound *harja-bergaz "shelter, lodgings," which is also the source of harbor (n.). Sense of "forerunner, that which precedes and gives notice of the coming of another" is mid-16c. The unetymological -n- is from 15c

*wordlessly hands you a Nandagol then leaves for another year-long art hiatus*
Tumblr media
Canvas statistics, lore dump, flat colour and details I like, under the cut!
Stats:
Total brushstrokes made - 23,419
Tracked time: 15hr 58m
Total file size: 465.57 MB
Lore:
> The necklace-looking thing is an Yngtor. In my fantasy WIP, they're ornamental pieces of jewellery, worn in this way (with it tucked into a belt) for specific dances, as Nandagol's doing. Each string of beads honours a notable ancestor; the green (supposed to be peridot but eh) for male ancestors, the red (supposed to be granodiorite but I don't know rocks) for female ancestors. Yellow beads are for ancestors who identified as neither male nor female, but none of Nandagol's five notable ancestors fell into this category.
> The runes on the round gold plates are ᛞ and ᛗ, the elder Futhark runes of 'D' and 'M'. These stand for the name of Nandagol's tribe, the Drakkarmær (lit. Longship Maiden, after their founder. I know, mær is a rude word in Danish, but it's fine in Old Norse), of which she's the daughter of the chieftain. The runes on the plate below that are ᚺᚨᚱᛃᚨ, 'harja', the name of her clan. This comes from an inscription on the Vimose comb, and may mean 'warrior'. It's a pretty word, anyway.
> Ashmys, her homeland, has a lot of volcanic activity. As such, there's always ash in the sky. The rusty red markings on her face are the Ashmit solution to that; it's gulum (from the Doric Greek gălā́nā, for lead sulphide), a compound believed to protect the eyes from irritation by the ash. The ancient Ashmit got the idea from the kohl used by the levantine people (this fantasy novel's an historic urban fantasy, so the Levant means the same area as it does in real life) that they traded with, long, long ago. Over time, the application of gulum became more and more elaborate; Nandagol's wearing a style known as Ornhofði - eagle-headed, in her language, which is definitely not nicked from Lucio from the Arcana (it started out as a placeholder because she needs her gulum but it's grown on me too much to change it :/).

Kambodžassa on kuoriutunut 60 siaminkrokotiilin (Crocodylus siamensis) poikasta. Se on luonnonsuojelijoiden mukaan uhanalaisten lajien kuoriutumisennätys tällä vuosisadalla, kertoo Britannian yleisradioyhtiö BBC verkkosivuillaan.
---
Siaminkrokotiili on oliivinvihreä makeanveden matelija, jolla on selkeä luinen harja pään takaosassa. Laji on luokiteltu kriittisesti uhanalaiseksi. Niitä on maailmassa jäljellä enää 400, joista suurin osa on Kambodžassa.
---
Paikalliset vapaaehtoiset ovat vartioineet Kardemummavuorilla vapauteen päästettyjen krokotiilien turvallisuutta, ja nyt löytyneille pesille lähetettiin vapaaehtoisia varmistamaan pesien koskemattomuus krokotiilien kuoriutumiseen asti.

Hi! I'm reading The House of the Wolfings and all these houses have -ing names, Elking (elk), Harting (hart/stag), Bearing (bear). And even in other lore and legend we got Ynglings, Wulfings, Hundings, Scylfings, etc. So, my last name is Haring. And anything I can find about it says it's just a different way to spell herring, and relates to the fish/a fisher. But I can't help and look at this and wonder if it has anything to do with this old naming pattern. Do you have any thoughts on that?
Hard for me to say. This is a little outside my expertise. I think if I really wanted to know, I'd start by seeing if I could trace the origin of it being used as a surname, especially the occupation of the people who used it. That would at least give some indication of whether the explanations you've found on the internet are well-informed, or just guesses. I will say, the herring explanation does make sense and even if it is a weakly-supported guess I think it would take a lot of work to unseat it as the likeliest candidate (compare the surname Fish/Fisher/Fisch/Fischer/Fisk/etc).
Surnames weren't common in most parts of Europe until relatively recently, so we should not expect that a name was coined as an ancient tribal or dynastic name and used continuously that way up until it transitioned into being a modern surname. I'm not aware of any Wulfingas or Ynglingar who are alive now. So we would have to look for a different process of that kept a name in some other kind of use in between. There might actually be one here. It seems that Haring was used a given name at one point, and the probably-related Hering even earlier. so it's theoretically possible that it could have been a group name, then became a given name for a while, and later a modern surname. Or it might be simpler to say, formed as a given name in early times, and then adapted as a surname when they started using those. I have no idea how likely that is. If the Haring surname only started being used as a surname in like the 1600's, then it remains to be explained why those guys had the same/almost the same name as a first name hundreds of years before. But in that case, we would not have a strong reason to suppose that the name stayed in a particular family or line.
Even if the name was first formulated in ancient times, it's still entirely possible that it could be related to herring. Herring are an extremely important food source, historically as well as today, and we do have evidence of ancient Germanic people named for characteristic foods (the Rugii, named for 'rye'), and furthermore, while we don't see a lot of tribal/dynastic names involving fish, we shouldn't ignore the fact that it's as much an animal as wolves and hounds, etc (though I can't imagine herringing being used as a name).
Also, while -ing names go back to ancient times, the use of the suffix to make names continued to be used into the modern era. I'm pretty sure they can still make new -ingar and -ingjar in Icelandic now. So even if your name doesn't follow a succession leading back to ancient times, and was coined in like 1600 or something, it may still have participated in that much older naming convention.
In fact, herring arguably does follow the same *[root]-ingaz, -ingijan- name-formation process, at least on the phonological level. The theories that I see for the etymology of herring derive it variously from *hēri- 'hair' (referring to its wispy bones), *harja- 'army' (referring to large schools of fish), or *haira- 'hoar; gray.' Any of these could also be tribal or dynastic names, with or without a connection to the fish. A derivation from the 'hair' word would parallel the Haddingjar, from haddr 'hair.' A derivation from the 'army' word would be similar to the Harii, a Germanic tribe whose name indicated them as warriors. I don't think any of these individually stand out as likely independent explanations of your name, but they're all feasible both for the origin of the word herring and for names that could have emerged when there were Skylfings and Skjöldungar and stuff. So really, you could be the inheritor of an ancient cool name, by means of the fish, which is itself pretty cool.
I dunno, like I said this is not really my wheelhouse (the further the discussion goes from Icelandic and its antecedents, the less capable I get) so this is all speculation but I hope it's helpful.

The Journey of Hemp at Reistor: A Story of Curiosity and Sustainability
Tumblr media
A word by Harjas Singh, Co-founder & CEO, Reistor
Hemp — an ancient, often misunderstood plant — has been around forever. But somewhere along the way, it got pushed aside, even though it has so much to offer. When we started Reistor, we couldn’t help but ask: why? Why was this incredible material, with all its history and utility, not a bigger part of everyday fashion?
Tumblr media
A curiosity that changed everything
Back in 2019, I had already spent nearly two decades in textiles — prints, fabrics, materials, you name it. My family’s been in this space for over 70 years, so I thought I’d seen it all. But hemp? That was completely new to me. I had never worked with it, never even really thought about it.
Then, on a spontaneous trip to the foothills of the Himalayas, I came across rows and rows of lush green hemp plants growing wildly. It doesn’t need any pesticides and uses hardly any water — just grows on its own. This was when I realised that this is a plant that doesn’t just survive in the wild without any proper care, but also flourishes, all while being one of the most sustainable crops out there.
I started digging deeper. I found out that the locals in the region had been using hemp fibers for generations — for medicine, fabric, ropes, and more. The more I learned, the more I realized this wasn’t just another fabric. It was strong, naturally resistant to pests, and required way less water than cotton. It felt like a hidden gem just waiting to be rediscovered.

Menin teatteriin katsomaan näytelmää Prinsessa Ruusunen - Paluu tulevaisuuteen.
Näytelmän jälkeen matkustin junalla ja bussilla kotikotiin.
Nautin sosekeittoa ja voileipää ja join kahvia.
Otin iltalääkkeeni ja harjasin hampaani. Käytin Veet- voidetta leukaani, siihen oli kasvanut aikamoinen harja.
On koko ajan turvaton olo, aivan kuin ympärilläni olisi kaikki yläasteen koulukiusaajat.
Kohta menen rasvaamaan ihoni, sitten menen nukkumaan.
Huomenna menen itsenäisyyspäivän juhliin, sitten parin kaverin luokse.
Lauantaina menen parin kaverin pikkujouluihin.
Sunnuntaina menen Koiramessuille.
