Roy Hargrove's Posthumous Album 'Grande-Terre' Celebrates Global Jazz
Roy Hargrove’s “Grande-Terre”: A Posthumous Gem Unlike most “lost” posthumous jazz albums, “Grande-Terre,” featuring the talented trumpeter Roy Hargrove and his vibrant ensemble Crisol, has emerged not as a collection of live recordings, rehearsal tapes, or discarded session material, but rather as a polished studio effort. Released on Friday, this album was recorded in Pointe-à-Pitre,…

I just wanted you to know that I am never not thinking about your harringrove frat au 🥰 and so I was wondering, would you ever tell us more about the first time steve & billy met/interacted in this au?? 🥺
I would LOVE TO. A little bit of a shout out in here to the TV show Greek, which I rewatched just the other day.
——
Billy was sweating like a whore in Church.
The group was loosely walking together in groups of twos and fours, everyone’s hands stuffed in their pockets.
And in front of him the guy laughed. Billy’s mind went blank, filled with creamy mole speckled skin and big brown eyes.
He wasn’t the tallest guy, either. Just the right height that they could hold hands or kiss without-
Billy had to stop that line of thinking then and there.
The buy stated lagging behind, long Bambi legs slowing until Billy and Argyle had caught up to him.
“Hi! I’m Steve Harrington,” he waved when he said it, like a dad at a barbecue. Billy immediately wanted to tongue him down from head to toe.
“Ey, Brochacho. I’m Alejandro Hernandez Aguilar but everyone calls me Argyle. This is Billy,” Argyle patted Billy’s chest.
“Hargrove.” Billy grunted.
“So who do you think you want to rush?” Steve stuffed his hands into the pockets of his puffy vest, grinning like a politician.
Argyle looked at Billy first, which sucked ass because all the words had just fled him in the headlights of those big Bambi eyes.
“Probably Alpha… uh Alpha Tau. Argyle’s a legacy,” Billy muttered.
“We’re kind of a package deal,” Argyle said with a smile.
“How about you?” Billy said it way too fast, wanting to keep Harrington around a little longer.
“I’m a legacy at Alpha. And Lambda Chi, uh, cuz of my granddad. But I’m actually interested in the next house.”
“Theta Pi Sigma,” the leader’s voice boomed from the front.
The house looked a lot tougher than some of the others. The white paint was peeling, and one of the letters by the door was hanging upside down. The leader rang the doorbell and then made his way slowly out of the crowd, looking weird as hell.
A skinny guy came out of the house, “Hey rushes. Welcome to Theta. First of all, does anyone know of our reputation?”
Hands rose around them. Argyle went to raise his hand but Harrington reached out and held it down.
“Great. All those with your hands raised. Go the fuck home,” the guy grinned.
Everyone hesitated.
“Go!”
The guys raising their hands scattered, leaving Billy and Argyle, Harrington of course, a tall, nerdy looking guy with long curly dark hair, and a twink with short blonde hair.
“The rest of you,” the skinny guy opened the door, “welcome.”
The house, which had looked empty and somewhat dark from the outside, was in the full swing of a party. A few guys by the door cheered, gesturing that they should all come inside.
“I heard they liked virgins,” Harrington was right next to Billy’s ear eliciting a shiver.
“This house doesn’t look like a virgin’s been inside since 1985,” Billy joked.
Harrington threw an arm around Billy’s shoulder, pinning him with those big beautiful brown eyes. “Oh, I fuckin’ like you, Billy Hargrove.”

01 He's back
written for @steddieangstyaugust (prompt: Second chances) and @augustwritingchallenge(Prompt: Canon Divergent) Rating: M Relationship: Steve/Eddie TW: mention of blow jobs Words: 1420
"Come on, Eddie! It's the Championship game!" Steve sighs, trying to help his secret boyfriend to be reasonable. Lucas has joined the basketball team and the final game is due on the same night as their game night.
"I don't care if it's one of your jocks' sacred rituals, it's Hellfire's night,” Eddie replies, shaking his head in disdain, “Lucas knows it and if he doesn't want to miss it he has to come to the theater room. If he doesn’t want to, it's not my problem."
"But you know that's important for him!" Steve insists, looking lazily at Eddie pacing front and backward.
"And the Hellfire is important to me! And to Gar! And Jeff! And Freak… even fucking Mike Wheeler knows that's important and that kid is always on the phone calling his stupid girlfriend. But not on Fridays! No sir! And guess why?”
“Because it’s Hellfire night,” Steve sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose.
“Exactly! Because. That. Is. Hellfire's night!" Eddie emphasizes, throwing his hands in the air like it was a great revelation.
"Can't you move it just for one time? It's the final game!"
"Are you fucking crazy? It's spring break! I can't organize a game night on spring break! And next semester I'll be too busy studying, because Edward Munson is going to be the first fucking Munson to graduate in his family, ok? I don't care what that prick of the principal thinks about me! 1986, baby! It's my year!"
Steve smiles softly, he does love Eddie’s enthusiasm and his commitment to the Hellfire club, but he would really like to help Lucas. They have trained together all summer to make sure he made it through the tryouts and even if he never played a game Steve knows that being there is important to be part of the team. He lets out a long sigh, rubbing a hand through his hair, "Come on, Eddie! I'm sure that dedicating one night of your studying time to Hellfire’s Club during the next semester isn't going to fuck your plans to graduate."
Eddie stops in his tracks, his eyes wide with anger, "You don't get it, Steve. It's my last game, ok? The last time I'll DM for the Hellfire. After that, I'll leave my legacy to the younger generation. It's a big deal. And it's important to me! If Lucas knew he would be busy he shouldn’t have joined the laundry basket team."
"Hey, low blow." Steve frowns.
"Fair. Sorry. Not cool. Still. If he knew he wasn’t able to come he should have asked to move the game night. But no. I found out, thanks to you, that the traitor isn't going to attend the last day of the Cult of Vecna Campaign. He didn’t even dare to tell me!"
"First of all, if Lucas told you would have scared him to death. And what's most important is that he couldn't have asked you ahead because there was no way he could have known that the team would have made it to the final! I mean, I was there at every game and I wasn't really optimistic. When Hargrove and I were on the team, things were different, but this year the coach had to do a great job of replacing all the players who graduated and adding new members to the team. It isn't easy, you know?"
"You are talking to me about things that aren't easy? I took your little sheep under my wing. I showed them the ropes of high school! I protected them from bullies… and how do they repay me? With treason!"
"You're being way too dramatic. Is there a way I can convince you to move Hellfire's night? Baby? You know I'd do anything for you." Steve tells him, falling onto his knees and crawling toward Eddie who looks at him with desire.
"You drive a hard bargain, Harrington. Are you saying you'll do whatever I'll ask you to?"
"I will."
"Even if it's something you always refused to do?"
Steve frowns, confused wondering if Eddie could ask him to do something that's a hard no for him. They talked about their limits, deeply, and he thinks he will respect his decisions but…
"Don't look so scared. I have a meeting with Chrissy Cunningham tomorrow. She wants to buy drugs. Yes, I know what you think about drugs but she's eighteen, ok? And she scares the shit out of me. I told her I would have seen her here at the trailer after Hell… after the Championship game. If you promise to be at my place and protect me from the mean cheerleader I might consider moving the Hellfire night after spring break. Oh, and I still want that blow job you seemed to be so willing to offer."
"You know what, I'll make you even a better offer: one blow job now and one after you see Chrissy, to calm your nerves."
"That sounds good."
***
Steve is hiding in Eddie's room. Well, not really hiding, he's just waiting for his boyfriend to get back. He was so anxious about this meeting with Chrissy, as if the sweetest girl alive could have ever been mean to anyone.
The familiar crunching sound of the van's tires rolling on the gravel tells him that Eddie is back even before he slams the door open announcing that the princess is visiting his humble abode. Steve chuckles between himself, his boyfriend is always so dramatic. Hearing him digging, looking for drugs in the trailer, Steve sighs. He doesn't like that Eddie sells drugs but Eddie promises he'll quit the business soon and that if Chrissy decides to take the drugs he'll stay with her to make sure her trip is a good one.
Chrissy and Eddie are chatting in the little living room and Steve is already bored out of his mind, so he starts to take a look at the tapes spread out on Eddie's bed, knowing that between them there's the demo Eddie and the boys are so proud of. Gareth's cousins know someone who knows someone who might be interested in the demo and they are super excited about it. Steve wants to have a taste of their music, so he puts the tapes in the stereo and scares himself to death when a loud music comes out from the speakers.
He should have known that Eddie always keeps his stereo at the maximum volume! He gets closer to the stereo to lower the volume when he realizes that the screams aren't coming from the tape. Or at least not the female's one.
Steve slams the door open and sees Eddie floating on the roof of the trailer, his eyes white and empty. Steve never saw something like that before but he has seen a few strange shit in his young life and that's a code red. He grabs his walkie and gives it to Chrissy, "Push the button and tell that's a code red!" he yells, while he tries to pull down Eddie from the ceiling.
"Come on, Eddie! Get your stupid ass back here." He curses, while Chrissy keeps screaming in the walkie-talkie. Someone might have answered because the trailer's door slams open once more and Max is standing in the living room, asking questions Steve has no answer for.
In the background the Corroded Coffin's tape keeps playing, changing from a screaming song to a sort of slow ballad.
Max has taken hold of the walkie talkie and she's describing what's going on to the others who are trying to find a way to get to the trailer to help. when finally Eddie opens his eyes and falls on the ground, but Steve is there, ready to cushion his fall.
"Steve... are you real? Are you really real?" Eddie asks, touching Steve's face with trembling hands.
Steve catches one of his hands, keeping him tight to his chest, and kisses the long fingers with affection.
"I'm real. You're good. Everything is good."
"I saw a monster, Steve! A real one! He was hunting me down and then… then I heard our song! And I saw you! And I ran to you." Eddie tries to explain while catching his breath.
"You did good, babe. You did well." Steve reassures him, rocking him back and forward.
When the walkie-talkie cracks alive again and Dustin's panicked voice asks what's going on, Steve grabs the walkie-talkie and replies, "He's back."
And none complains about the fact he didn't say: over.

REMNANTS | E.M.
word count: 2.3k
warning: alternative series ending, no happy ending, thought we were done with this but if I can't talk about it with someone then I can write about it to someone- make this go away by making you the villain vibes except it’s scary factual
summary: you overhear a conversation between eddie and billy and realize your parents had good reason to try and keep you away from him.
previous parts: linger | fleeting | gone
You had a sickening pull to your stomach, the butterflies that lived there had turned to stone, heavy and rough, and it made you want to throw up. Your dad was right, as if that sentence alone wasn’t enough to make your guts jumble, it also made the next part even worse because he was right about Eddie being not only bad for you, but ultimately being on the wrong side of things altogether. Motives really do change, people really do change, but what if you just didn’t know Eddie’s motives from the beginning. When Billy Hargrove started working for the family your dad thought he’d be able to change him and bring out better in him, and for a while he did, for a while, he worked harder than he schemed. But still, he managed to change everything, nearly ruining the entire legacy your parents had created by allowing squatters to move into rooms and pocketing the money, sent out false communications in your dad’s name, selling private information to whoever paid him the most- it was unreal that someone so young, so immature could create such a scheme right under everyone’s noses.
Eddie wasn’t directly involved in any of it, but he knew, you didn’t know that he knew, and it should’ve made you run for the hills when you found out that he did. You should’ve, the second you saw Billy talking to him, the second he started getting a little too involved in the admin part of the job, you should’ve seen his helpfulness and eagerness for what it truly was- a search for an in and you very naively gave it to him by thinking with your heart and not your head.
Your mom decided to send you home, it wasn’t as busy, the work you had to do wasn’t stuck to the office and though she’d never tell your dad about it, your mom knew you were hurting a little at the idea that Eddie, in all his kind glory wasn’t truly who you thought he was. In the back of your head, you could clearly still see your Eddie, he was still all the things that made you blush just at the thought of him but there was a snippy voice in your head that wondered what about it was real, what about it was an act and what about it was just a ploy to distract you from what was happening. You wondered if he ever even wanted to be your friend, ever actually saw you, or if it was always just an endgame type of scenario, if he applied just enough sweet charm, you’d fold like paper, the boss’ naïve daughter who was so desperate for any form of care or love or attention she fell for it without a single bit of hesitation. You felt embarrassed, and stupid, like all those times your mom told you that guys would change your character was right, and that made you so cross too because you were sure you’d be different.
You were already having a horrendous day, fought with your mom, had to apologize for not cutting him off when you should’ve, when you realized you liked him, why you didn’t tell her and the truth was because you knew she’d reason with you, make you realize how selfish, how unlike yourself you were being. And how would you explain that, you’d not done anything wrong, innocent conversations, subtle musings that disguised his flirting, really it was just nice to be noticed, be seen and fussed over, you didn’t need to hide yourself, you could just be. Now it felt like there was a magnifying glass aimed right at you, every move, every word, everything you’d done the last few months was now under question because you’d not seen Eddie for who he was. You wanted to walk it off and get some air before having to sit in a car with them to be taken home. It wasn’t like you’d run into any of them, not when they were in hiding somewhere discussing their plans.
When you’d found yourself in front of the empty room that used to be an office, that used to be where you and Eddie hid away to eat lunch, to breathe a little, you didn’t expect to find him there, didn’t expect to find him there with those type of people either, seems like you were still in the process of finding out just how much you misunderstood him.
“Oh get over it, so what if she’s ignoring you,” it was Billy’s voice, too arrogant all things considered, too loud considering he wasn’t allowed in the building in the first place, you peaked into the window and saw Eddie shrug, his face looked different, clouded by something- secrets, just like theirs. “Never mind that, we’ve still got the floorplans, still know which rooms are open and when they’ll be filled,” he was smoking, flicked ash onto the carpet, and rubbed it into the material with the sole of his boot. “Besides, if she comes out saying anything to her parents, we have enough to put everything right back onto her,” that sickening feeling was back, it felt like it was trying to harden the whole of your body with it.
“I don’t know about that, man,” Eddie took a drag from the cigarette and shook his head, he looked unsure, but you couldn’t know, not now, you weren’t sure if you’d ever been able to read him in the first place. “She’s a sweet girl, I mean I know we used her for intel, know it was easy to get her on my side, but shit, I don’t know if it’s right to make this all out to be her fault when it goes wrong.”
“When?” Billy scoffed, a sound, much like his general existence that made you want to throw a chair at him just to silence it. “Eddie, we’ve been one step ahead of them since the beginning, by the chance they catch onto us we’ll be walking away with full pockets and not a single piece of evidence pointing to us.”
You somehow felt even more stupid when you expected Eddie to defend you, your family, he’d been working close enough to the lot of you to at least realize that this wasn’t okay, wasn’t right, definitely wasn’t legal, but it wasn’t how you treated people who cared for you, helped you.
“I think my pockets are full enough,” Eddie stood up, stuffed the cigarette in Billy’s hand, and kicked at the mark Billy left on the floor as if it could take it out now, you bit back a scoff, very typical. “I don’t want to be involved in this anymore, I didn’t think I’d care if I hurt them, thought people like them deserve it but-“
“But you like her? So what if you like her, do you think she’d care about you at all outside of this place, if she’d met you in the diner or the supermarket, she wouldn’t even have noticed you,” he wasn’t wrong, you hated to know he wasn’t wrong, but it meant you also wouldn’t have gotten hurt, it means you would’ve been right to stay as far away as possible. “Besides, she’d write you off in an instant if she knew what you’d been doing with me, that’s the whole point, we’re all caught up in it now, no getting out of it- we’re the ones with the power, we can take them all down with us.”
“You give yourself too much credit, Billy,” Eddie looked like he’d seen a ghost when you opened the office door to see them, he’d paled, and tried his best to hide his reaction but failed completely. “It’s going to take more than a little plan decided on over cigarettes and late-night beers to take down this business, we were surviving before you, and we’ll survive after you,” you couldn’t look at Eddie, took the cigarette from Billy’s hold and put it out on the plastic shades hanging on his shirt pocket. “Now, the sign with your picture on it by the gate is more than just a little suggestion- you’re not allowed on the premises.”
“Hasn’t stopped me before, has it,” he winked and shoved Eddie’s shoulder lightly before he made quite the scene of walking away from you. “See you soon,” he paused, scoffed at the way Eddie was looking at you, lips moving without any words. “Good luck, Eds.”
You waited for the door to shut, for his steps to echo on the stairs as he left, for your heart to start beating again, for your blood to stop boiling. When you finally looked up at the boy, you wished you hadn’t, he looked guilty, you didn’t need to know him to know that it was written all over his features, all over his movements- he moved to say something, you shook your head, he didn’t take note of it.
“I’m sorry,” it felt odd being on the receiving end of that phrase, when you used it the day before it had such a different meaning, and held such different emotions, he was guilty, he was doing something wrong and he was able to hide it from you for months now but with it all out in the open it was like he couldn’t hide from it either, he had to face it now. “I didn’t want to hurt you.”
“Bite your tongue,” you had to be careful now, not too emotional, not too revealing, he wasn’t on your side, wasn’t one you could trust with yourself anymore, another person to sift with, another person to pretend with. “You don’t believe that- I most certainly don’t- I might not know you Eddie Munson, but you knew me enough to take part in this plan of yours so don’t you dare try and tell me you didn’t think this would hurt me.”
“It’s not that simple, okay, yes it started as an act, but I swear things started changing for me, you made this so difficult for me, I knew I should’ve kept going but I couldn’t stand seeing you actually like me knowing what I was doing.”
“I made it hard for you to hurt me?” you scoffed, your words might be calculated but the sound was very telling, you were fuming, you were devastated, how Eddie of all people could be the one to do this to you was madness, unbelievable- how he could be working hand in hand to hurt the business was a whole other thing, your entire livelihood was at stake because he wanted to score some extra cash this month. You shook your head. “I’m so confused, Eddie, honestly, I should be so upset with you but more than anything I’m literally so disappointed in you. You’re better than this, you’re better than him and his schemes- you had a shot here, you were proving yourself to my parents, you had a future here aside for me and you completely threw that away- you think they could trust you after this?”
“I didn’t think it through,” he pulled a hand through his hair, and pulled at his denim jacket, it seemed like he didn’t know what to do with his hands, with his body, he wanted to speak to you but you had a feeling he didn’t know where to even begin, even if he had, he knew you wouldn’t listen, wouldn’t accept anything from him after what you’d just heard. “I didn’t think it would go this far.”
“Neither did I,” he reached for you, and you stepped back, absolutely hated that, he did it again and you physically had to push his hand away. “Don’t. Don’t you dare.”
“Please, you don’t need to forgive me, but hear me out, let me explain, it won’t mean much but I swear there’s more to this than what you overheard,” you allowed his hand to brush against yours, closed your eyes for a second at the familiar feel of it, considered how you’d think about it for days on end even after all his done.
“Just leave, Eddie, take your cash, your people, leave before I have to tell my dad about all of this and he makes you leave,” you folded your arms around yourself, hated yourself more than you could fathom, how could you have fallen for this, how could you allow yourself to feel like this. “Please, this was cruel, it was unkind and unfair and I never for a second expected this of you so please just leave- please don’t let this linger.”
And he didn’t, he left, you shattered, felt the remnants of your trust in him fall to the floor, and you had no idea how to process this. It was never just a crush, it was never a crush in the first place, you were a pawn and they just took you right off the board.

We know that Steve thinks his Dad is an asshole, but he doesn’t really mention his mother other than a few off hand comments. She goes on his Dad’s business trips because she doesn’t trust him not to cheat, she’s well respected in Hawkins, and Steve used her as a reference when he applied for the job at Family Video. So I got to thinking about what if she was a good person also trapped under the pressure of Mr Harrington, just like Steve? What if Steve had a good relationship with her? And this happened
Mrs Harrington who loved her husband once, who had a husband who loved her back. She loved his ambition, his drive, his dedication. She didn’t love it when it started to turn into him spending all hours at the office, at business meetings. When it started to turn into something money hungry. But it was his job. He knew best. Right?
Mrs Harrington has a baby because she wants one. She’s always wanted to be a mother. Mr Harrington has a kid because it’s What You Do. You have a kid so they can take over your company, carry on your family legacy. Uphold the Harrington name. His reputation. A nanny can raise them when they’re little. When they're older they can follow in his footsteps. Popular, likes cars, plays basketball.
Mrs Harrington raises little Steve as much as she can. He’s a little Mama’s boy. She’ll go to the salon to get her hair done and Steve sits in the chair next to hers, driving his toy cars up and down the seat. Steve drags her outside so he can show her this “Really cool swimming trick, Mama!” and she watches him happily from the porch seats, commenting that he swims so well is he sure he’s not part fish? He’ll watch her put her make up on and get ready for a Charity Gala she’s organising. He tells her she’s beautiful, Mama and she’ll run one of her big fluffy make up brushes across his cheeks so he can be beautiful too.
Steve gets older and Mr Harrington takes over in shaping Steve’s life. He’s a man now. A Harrington. Mrs Harrington isn’t quite sure what to do. She thinks her husband might be a bit harsh but he was a teenage boy once, he must know what’s best for him. Right? He’s the man of the family. The head of the household and what he says goes. She isn’t so sure now, but it’s what her father always taught her. It’s what she always learnt in Church. She fawns under his harsh gaze and feels the guilt churning in her gut as she doesn’t know what to do. Steve starts pulling away from her, and her husband keeps flirting with his young secretaries.
It comes to a head in Steve’s senior year when she’s with her husband on a business trip in New York. Her husband’s secretary gets a call that Steve’s in the hospital after getting into a fight with another student - Billy Hargrove. Her husband brushes it off as ‘Boys will be boys’. A Harrington shouldn’t have lost. Maybe this will teach him about consequences. Did he even think about what this could have done to their reputation? He doesn’t tell his wife.
Mrs Harrington is the only one in their hotel room when the secretary calls again with an update from the hospital. She finds out that he knew that their only son was in the hospital and didn’t tell her. It’s the last straw. Her husband comes back to the hotel room smelling of expensive liquor and someone else’s perfume. They get into a screaming match and she packs her bags and calls a taxi. She calls the hospital from the airport that she’s on her way.
She gets the first plane she can and rushes straight to the hospital. The nurse at the reception desk tells her what room he’s in and she tears up as soon as she sees Steve.
“Oh my baby. I’m so sorry.”
Steve locks eyes with her and his eyes water. “Hi Mama.” His voice is quiet.
She rushes over to hug him and his teary eyes turn into violent sobs, her whispering comforting nothings to her baby boy as he cries. She came as soon as she heard, she’s so sorry, he’s okay now. She doesn’t tell him yet that she wasn’t there earlier because her husband didn’t tell her. Her wedding ring feels heavy on her finger.
When Steve is recovering at home, asleep in the other room, she rings a divorce lawyer.

Sometimes being a superhero isn’t really about the big epic battles to save the world; sometimes it’s about the quieter moments before, after, and in between. Eddie is a former sidekick taking on a bigger mantle after his uncle’s retirement. Steve is the genetic offspring of the world’s greatest hero and said hero’s greatest enemy, trying to live up to a legacy he only partially understands. Over the course of several years, they move in and out of each other’s lives, for better or worse, until they eventually reach the path to their happy ending.
Or:
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single Batman must be in want of a Superman.

Do you want to know what really fucked me up and got me good about Steve Harrington in S1? What I MISS SO MUCH and wish the Duffer Brothers had a clue how to tap into?
Steve was the Queen Bee. Which is hilarious because the Duffers fully set out to write him as the Jock Bully archetype but through a happy marriage of poor writing and even poorer casting (for the intended goal) they ended up with a completely different character archetype.
It was utterly fascinating to me. Because we don’t see male Queen Bees pretty much ever unless it’s part of a gag or some Very Important Point within the plot. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one who just is one, while the narrative keeps on telling you he’s the Jock Bully... when he’s so clearly not.
Don’t believe me? According to exhaustive research on archetypes.com: 🤪
Common traits of the Queen Bee = Cunning and glamorous, often materially wealthy, confident, socially ambitious, and charismatic. The recognized ruler of an academic setting. Deep inside she’s an angry girl, because she has been disappointed or seen how the world really is and has no outlet. She is in need of boundaries and guidance. Unable to deal with her emotions, she projects her anger into selfishness and protects herself from the outside world climbing the social hierarchy. The Mean Girl falls when she loses her power. Her power is always directly tied to her social status and her story ends with her no longer resting atop the social hierarchy. If we’re humanizing her, she’s a sad rich girl in need of a true friend she can be imperfect with. She may soften, but often her legacy as ‘Queen Bitch’ will continue to haunt her.
Common Traits of the Jock/Jerk Bully = an alpha male who dominates the school/college environment through physical violence and threats of brutal retaliation. Typically blond, he is rarely seen without a letter jacket or some connection to the sport he draws his self value from, as he is also typically dumb and unlikely to go far in life. If we’re humanizing this character his father is a jerk with unrealistic expectations. He has a posse of enablers who hype his excess anger and poor impulse control issues. His low levels of empathy and radar for weakness in others can be played for laughs if he is the villain of the week or border on sociopathic if he is the heroes arch nemesis.
Now don’t get me wrong. I can so clearly see how the Duffers started out writing Steve as the Jock Bully, but it’s also pretty clear that things went haywire once they fell in love with Joe. I think it’s obvious that in an effort to highlight what they liked about Joe (a sensitive artist and definitely not a Jock Bully) they lost the one trope and accidentally created the other.
So when they create Jock Bully 2.0, AKA Billy Hargrove and decide he and Steve are gonna be rivals for the school crown and ALPHAHOOD or whatever... instead you’re just left with the keen sense that these two characters are supposed to be together. Because they are. That’s the formula. And I would bet money they realized it too.
