my dangerous wife - kdrama review
summary
this drama focuses on a married couple who seemingly have it all; beauty, affluence, and happiness, things that many pursue but never acquire. however, the rose tinted image begins to change when infidelity, lies and doubt begin to mar it. through countless plans, unexpected alliances and deception, the strings of leading couple yoonchul and jaekyung’s marriage become more and more entangled, resulting in a fiery conclusion almost no one, not even themselves (and me!), saw coming.
***SPOILERS BELOW: continue at your own risk!
nice + not so nice things
okay! here’s where the casual part of the review starts, and i can openly talk about the things i both liked and disliked about this drama, and give my final ratings and opinions! so lets goooooooo:))
1. the cinematography! the camera angles, and the selection of what is and isn’t shown, and exactly how much is shown to the viewer at a certain time is really well done in this drama, and aids in developing the suspense. you know that if the camera panned to the right jUST a little, you’d be able to see the answer to your questions, but no! you have to wait 3 episodes to get that answer, which is what keeps the viewer engaged (for context, this had me binge the show in 3 days haha so i guess it’s really effective). something i find common in melos like this is that the camera angles and such are more of an afterthought and aren’t a big deal, but in this show i feel like all the scenes were purposefully placed there, which enhances the viewing experience.
2. the plot twists! when i tell you this show is one of the twistiest ive ever seen, i mean it. the headache inducing question of “who has the money?” literally had me on edge for almost half of it. with this comes the con of you being frustrated (which i found myself feeling alot) but i think the amount of twists in this one (until ep 16) were good:) the insurance twist in ep16, along with the weird vibe in their relationship toward the end just had me a bit lost for words because i found it ill fitting for lack of better words. i think it could’ve been wrapped up cleaner, but this conclusion was not bad because one could attribute the jagged ending to the fact that life isn’t clean and neither are relationships; it’ll never be as pristine and nice as you want it to be (something i think jaekyung learned throughout the show) but that’s something that you have to learn to live with.
3. the acting! okay so this is both a pro and a con, a pro for the actresses for jaekyung and seonmi but a con for yoonchuls actor. both jaekyung and seonmi’s actresses did such an amazing job portraying a variety of facial expressions, whether it be love or defeat or disbelief or sadness, these actresses did SUCH a great job, especially jaekyung’s actress! i think her performance really starts to shine towards the end of the show, where not just her but all the characters become visibly more emotional, and i think the range of emotions she is able to convey is spectacular. seonmi’s actress literally made me angry whenever she came on screen, so i’d consider that a job well done given her role. for yoonchul unfortunately, it felt like he had 3 faces; sad and crying, angry, and his stupid face lol. that also might be because of his character, but i wish his portrayal had a bit more depth. maybe the incompetence of the males (wrt the females) serves to highlight the intelligence of females which is frequently overlooked in society, which is probably another theme in this show because the females run circles around their husbands or the men in their lives, displaying that they shouldn’t be overlooked.
--> aside: this is kind of irrelevant to the acting, but the detective’s wife was such a well written character. she was headstrong and had her flaws, but she knew that she wanted more than taking care of her kids and cooking, and she ended up pursuing her dreams as a writer which made me super happy! another similar woman related concept i wanted to mention was how women being strong and fearless in this show automatically results in them being dubbed as ‘crazy’ or ‘dangerous’, as seen through the title of the show in reference to jaekyungs abilities and the lengths she’d go to achieve her goals. people often say that one fears what one doesn’t understand, and this is evident here, where the concept of female intelligence and bravery isn’t even attempted to be understood by the males on the show, automatically resulting in the females being branded with fear labels, which is a take i find really interesting and refreshing to see in a mystery drama.
4. the plot! my god okay this plot was interesting for the first 6 episodes probably? then afterwards it felt as though all logic and rationale was abandoned. both main characters can’t decide if they like eachother or want eachother to die, and in the midst of their turmoil they bring down others (some of them deserving but i mean anyways). while i do have to commend the writers for making the lore make sense, i feel like it could’ve been presented a lot better, and some of the characters could’ve been made better use of. i was screaming at my laptop for almost all of the latter half of the show, which may be intentional, but was pretty annoying for a drama which started with so much potential.
analysis + final thoughts
this drama reminds me a lot of world of married (i watched that when it came out so i dont think i remember enough to write a detailed review, and im not going to put myself through the misery of watching it again so if someone wants a review on that then let me know and i’ll do it) mainly because its a couple who can’t decide if they love or hate eachother due to an issue that initially stems from infidelity on the part of the husband. however, how these dramas differ is in the plot line, and also their depictions of love and marriage. in world of married, love (and marriage) is portrayed sweetly, however it quickly sours. due to the actions and the natures of the main characters. redemption, while teased, is ruled impossible, and both sunwoo and taeoh go their separate ways (not without a whole lot of crap in the middle, but anyways). in this drama, however, despite all the messed up stuff that happens, both main characters are shown to truly care about eachother (as displayed through yoonchul coming back to save jaekyung in their house despite rationally having no reason to do so), and love and marriage is seen as something that can be imperfect and unique to every individual. this is really evident through the change in jaekyung; a woman who stands for neatness and cleanliness, one who always plans ahead for all situations and is in control of every room she walks into had an image of marriage that was scot free and perfect. these unrealistic ideals are what results in the blemishes on her marriage, and through the events of the show and her own actions she learns that love and marriage is not about the cleanly external appearances, but the true trust and commitment between both parties. this, along with both the characters personalities, enable them to forgive and live seemingly happily by the end of the show, something that we don’t see in the world of married due to the differences in the portrayal of marriage. this show portrays it a lot more forgivingly despite the jarring events that occur in the show, which is a contrast i found pretty obvious when watching the show. along these lines, however, the last episode and the happy ending between jaekyung and yoonchul is really surprising and can be interpreted in many ways. one can view it as a representation and final display of the writer’s portrayal of love; an everlasting bond of commitment that triumphs all else, or one can view it as the couple succumbing to greed; both of them staying with eachother for the 16 million insurance payout. the joking tension that looms in the last episode makes it hard to tell which interpretation is the truth, though personally i tend to view it as a combination of both.
     moving on from the main couple, the neighbours eunhye and kevin and their dynamic was interesting as well. initially i found their relationship odd, and once the contract aspect was revealed, kevin’s nonchalance about a lot of things made sense. however his development towards the end of the show, where he seems to care about eunhye beyond a contract and seems to actually want well for her, suggesting her to run and leave him behind was interesting as well. one would balance the same two reasons as i did above with jaekyung and yoonchul’s happy ending; did he stay for the money, or did he actually fall in love with her? that is also left unanswered by the writers, but i think it sparks an interesting debate. also; something i don’t fully get the answer behind is why jaekyung enabled their escape. i initially thought it was because she assumed it’d be safer for her if they were gone and not breathing down her neck, or if they sniffed wind of her 16 million payout, but after further thinking i think it was her form of justice. the two of them have to run for essentially the rest of their lives, living as fugitives and being unable to visit family or friends or engage in normal public activities, which gives them a lot of time to think about their actions or endure the stress or wait for the impending shoe to drop, which i think is a particularly crafty form of torture. additionally, eunhye is wanted on either a manslaughter or murder charge for the murder of jaekyung’s hoobae, not to mention breaking and entry charges, wiretapping charges, two counts of attempted murder since she stabbed them both, theft of the money, and arson, and im not even going to get into kevins charges lol so i doubt they’d ever stop running or turn themselves in because its a life sentence likely. so i think her letting them run was her own form of justice, and i think its a really fitting display of jaekyungs character; a woman who can form an excellent plan like this while bleeding out beside her husband who she likely thinks is dead, a superhuman feat and a true testament to her intelligence and the lengths she’d go to keep what is hers, an ability the characters all come to fear at some point in the show, aptly justifying her title as the dangerous wife.
     i’d probably give this drama a 7.75/10. i think it was a good watch overall, very bingeable and is interesting enough to keep you watching, however the grievances i have with the plot and some of the acting prevent me from giving it a higher rating. this drama is notable as it talks about many important societal issues such as gender roles and the perceptions of females in society, which is something i dont commonly see in drama’s of this nature. if you like mystery thriller novels with some pretty smart and cunning women, give my dangerous wife a watch! thank you so much for reading :)

Nakta as a dad
Requested by anon - "Daddy, let's go, let's go!!" The little girl eagerly pulled Yoonchul with her little hands, dragging him outside. "Baby, if you pull too much, daddy's arms will fall off." He said to his daughter. However, she didn't seem to hear what her father said and continued dragging him towards the park. Yoonchul sighed, but nevertheless, he was happy that he gets to spend some time with his daughter and that his wife gets a day off. It was a Saturday morning so the park was packed with kids, accompanied by their half-asleep mothers. For a while, Yoonchul had a moment of appreciation for his wife and all the mothers out there who sacrifice their sleep just to spend time with their kids. "Daddy, I'm going to play in the slide with Seomi over there!" She said pointing at the yellow and violet slide. Yoonchul nodded and she sprinted towards the slide and he smiled, silently admiring how adorable his daughter is. "Your daughter is really pretty. How old is she?" A man whom he recognized as their neighbor who lived at unit 407 sat beside him. "She's turning six this August." He said. The neighbor's baby cried so he hurriedly got the milk from his bag and gave it to the baby. "Babies.. they're such a work." He said to Yoonchul, scratching his head. "Wait till they learn how to walk and talk, they'd be running around the house and ask you a million questions at 6 in the morning." Yoonchul said laughing and his neighbor laughed with him. "Daddy, daddy, look what I caught!!!!" His little 'father problems bonding' with his neighbor was suddenly interrupted by his daughter who suddenly turned up, clutching something in her tiny hands. "What's that?" He asked and she opened her hands, revealing a small frog. "We found it hiding below the slide. I think it got lost." She said. As much as he thinks that she resembles her mother most of the time, Yoonchul is glad that she somehow inherited some of his traits like love for animals. "Let's go find it's mommy!!!" She said already pulling Yoonchul from his seat. They spent fifteen minutes trying to find the mommy frog, peeking under the slides and swings, until they found it at the grass on the side of the park. "The mommy frog is there!!" His daughter exclaimed and ran towards the much bigger frog. She slowly placed the smaller frog beside the mommy frog and waited for them to disappear. "Daddy, can we buy a pet frog?" She said, looking at Yoonchul with his big puppy eyes that she knew he couldn't resist. "Uhm.... I think we should ask your mom first. She wouldn't be too happy if we come home with frogs in our hands." He said. "Okay! Then let's go home now so we can ask her!!!" She said excitedly. So the both of them walked hand in hand, as they head back to their apartment.

Topp Dogg - First Meetings
I figured might as well get it over with since they’ve got so many damn members… sigh. But I did have fun making it. As always requests and anons are open :) Have a topp day! [god im so lame kms] Also, I only did the current members because when I personally discovered Topp Dogg it was the current line up it has now. So if you want one with the former members, I’ll do that individually after I research them better.
Byungjoo ||
Tumblr media
You were a new trainee at Stardom Entertainment, mainly for dancing, and were to be introduced to one of the members of the bigger bands there to practice what dance moves you had so far. After finding your way down to the practice rooms, a figure suddenly dashed in the middle of the threshold, pausing right where you were going to walk through.
“Wow~ I’m Byunjoo. Sorry I’m late!”
Sangdo ||
Tumblr media
As part of an interviewer, you have to interview people. It’s literally in the job description. But today was just not your day. You kept messing up the member’s names, even though you had been a fan of TD ever since they debuted. During one of the breaks, you looked over just as you caught Sangdo’s eye. He shot you a heart with a warming smile.
“Fighting, (Y/N), you’re doing great!”
Taeyang ||
Tumblr media
You were sure they got tired of variety shows, so when their manager came to you – one of the planners for different game shows – and asked you to put them on to boost both your ratings and their popularity, you knew just what to do. They spent the day trying to pronounce Americanized names, leaving you a laughing mess as you corrected their mistakes with a ‘ddaeng’ almost every round.
“I /will/ get this one right, I swear. I have to get this right I’ve been getting it wrong the whole game.”
Yoonchul ||
Tumblr media
You were being shown around the company building by who was soon to be your manager. You had managed to ace your audition in phases both one and two, and were being moved into your next phase which was training for your debut in the Spring. Your manager had caught some of the members he had also been managing, introducing them to you even though you knew quite well who they were – Yoonchul was your bias after all.
“Sehyuk-ah, have you seen- oh! Annyeonghaseyo! You must be new; I’m Yoonchul.”
Sanggyun ||
Tumblr media
It was all a misunderstanding. You were supposed to be sending your SnapChat to a close friend of yours, with an excited picture of yourself captioning: ‘I can’t wait for tomorrow! What if I actually get to meet the members of Topp Dogg?’ And the message you got back was not from your friend, but from your bias. Because you had sent the image to him instead by accident.
Caption: ‘I hope to see you there so I can make that come true.’
Sangwon ||
You were the first in your class to be activated to actually go into the studio and work the tracks with the artists, and one rapper in particular seemed to catch your attention when he came in for the first time – words coming out so fast it made your head spin and his eyes seeming to see past the one way glass and into your own.
“So was that good? Or would you like me to continue?”
Tumblr media
Sehyuk ||
You were a waitress at a small restaurant in Incheon, South Korea – if you blinked, you would miss it. Sometimes couples came in, other times it would be a random group of friends, but you were never really that busy. Until one day you come back from the grill area to serve your usual customer and see ten men – from the group Topp Dogg – waiting politely to be seated. When you came around to ask if they needed anything else, their leader Sehyuk, locked eyes with you before accidentally dropping the food on his chopsticks back into it’s bowl.
“No we’re – aish, jinjja! We’re fine. You’ve been a lovely hostess, though, thank you!”
Tumblr media
Hojoon ||
You were helping on set of a variety show that Topp Dogg was appearing on, and it was time for them to do the Pepero game: you take two people with one Pepero stick and they try to get down to 2cm by the end of 10 seconds. Hojoon, however, the entire game seemed to be paying attention mostly to you. So when time came around for the game, he smirked at you with the Pepero stick in his mouth.
“Yah! How about you do this with me instead? You’re prettier than these guys are-”
Tumblr media
Jiho ||
You two had been having a contest the entire fan meet. It was who could make the silliest faces. Needless to say, you were so red in the face from your bias giving you so much attention among all the other girls in the crowd that clearly he won.
“Don’t be so sad, jagi, there’s always next time.”
Tumblr media
Hansol ||
You were at a fan signing, and you noticed that your bias – Hansol – wasn’t looking like his normal happy self. So your best friend, who had tagged along with you and lived to embarrass you, decided to help put a smile on his face. She blatantly yelled out, “HANSOL-OPPA, MY CHINGU THINKS YOU’RE HOT!” And obscenely pointed at you. Needless to say, a smile did crack on his stoic features, face turning pink.
“The feeling is mutual.”
