Hannifashion April Challenge: Even more days of Alana Bloom

Day 2: Aperitivo - second appearance

So yesterday we flashed back to Alana entering Hannibal’s house as the Red Dinner unfolded. A gun was drawn. 

But the gun looked like a modern 9mm, not the Walther PPK that Will gave to Alana. Now we see that it’s pointing towards the window of the interrogation room.

Will’s POV is ultimate in Aperitivo - the episode begins and ends with scenes where he is alone and unobserved, and opens with a flashback/AU scenario of Will’s “what might have been”. 

But now we segue into Chilton’s POV as he takes us on his rounds of trying to recruit all the other characters, and the first round is his exposition to Mason Verger, beginning with the horrific injury he suffered. We see Alana seated with her back to the camera, in her peacock-feather sweater.

All details, as before, except for the watch which is the same as yesterday.

Day 18: Yakimono - “You were using coercive therapies, influencing Abel Gideon and Will Graham to point the Ripper investigations in false directions”

This is Alana’s third outfit in Yakimono.

The case against Chilton is farcical, because he was in the hospital getting his innards put back in the right order at the time Abigail Hobbs was “killed”.

I find this conversation really upsetting.

Remember, Alana was one of the last people Miriam worked with before she disappeared. Now Miriam is back, and her memory has been deliberately fucked up and down every which way. For years. Her sense of reality is totally scrambled. I need hardly add that she has been tortured. For years.

Imagine you are Miriam listening on the other side of that glass, completely terrorized to the core of your being, listening to your trusted former colleague, who was working with you to develop the profile of the person you’re being asked to identify now:

ALANA: The only victim of the Chesapeake Ripper who lived to tell.

HANNIBAL: Is this witness watching me now?

ALANA: Yes.

HANNIBAL: It seems I am the usual suspect.

ALANA: I keep having angry, imaginary conversations with Jack Crawford about that. I wish I could tell you why this is happening. [emphasis mine]

HANNIBAL: His witness must not be able to identify the Ripper by sight. Jack wants them to hear my voice; otherwise, I’d be in here alone. Right? Still I appreciate your company.

Imagine you are Miriam. After listening to that, can you afford to believe that the man behind the glass is the Chesapeake Ripper? If it’s him, is the law on your side? If you say “it’s him” and the law enforcers think you’re wrong - which they will, because they just said so - he walks out of there knowing you are a threat to him.

You’re Miriam. What are you going to say?

MIRIAM: It’s not him.

Of course Miriam said that. Believes it, too. She has to. Because MIRIAM IS THE ONLY ONE ON MIRIAM’S SIDE.

“Alana doesn’t know” does not cut it as an excuse.

This is Alana’s second outfit in Yakimono.

Alana’s ski pants: black ski pants, unknown brand.

Alana’s boots: black mukluks with faux-fur trim, unknown brand.

$$ My boots: black mukluks with faux-fur trim, Timberland via eBay. (I can testify that these boots do work well in the south-east English snow - they get a reasonable amount of traction while the ice is still forming. I haven’t tried them after the snow gets packed into ice, which for the uninitiated is a serious hazard when it snows in England. For packed ice, I carry Yaktrax.)

Alana’s earrings: “These earrings are made of faux gold plated metal and detailed with ten cubic zirconia stones each.” Unknown brand. I think we are meant to perceive these as real, not costume jewellery.

Stuff you shouldn’t read is under the cut:

Some people thought that Alana is angry with Will in this scene because she’s sickened by violence. But that’s not it. When Alana finally accepts that Hannibal is the Ripper, she picks up a gun herself and fires it at him. 

The things Alana is expressing anger about here are, 

1) Will was not the person she assumed him to be, and in this, he has wronged her. This is an absolutely dehumanizing thing to say or think, but, she says it. She then brandishes Applesauce, asserting “I rescued her”. In a line of dialogue that was cut from Futamono, Jack remarks that Applesauce is a replacement for Will’s role in Alana’s life. Alana has replaced Will by rescuing a bitch. 

2) Will is wrong about Hannibal; that is, he is wrong (mistaken) in believing Hannibal is the Ripper, therefore was wrong (immoral) in trying to have him killed. 

So that’s twice in one brief conversation that Alana has expressed that the real wrongdoing, in her eyes, is literally being wrong about someone else. (Well, and also being a person separate from her with a mind of your own.)

Which... even bearing in mind that Alana is a profiler, and that profiling may be core to her sense of identity much more than I realized, that is a weird set of values and priorities to have. It makes more sense when combined with the observation by @bonearenaofmyskull that Alana can’t bear to be wrong. It also reinforces my suspicion that Alana is recreating family dynamics with Hannibal and Will standing in for her brothers; that would be one way that Being Right About Someone could become such a dealbreaker to her, not just professionally but personally.

And it makes the most sense of all if you basically see it as projection. Alana knows, deep down, that she is the one who’s wrong about Hannibal, but he represents the reality she prefers, and by golly she is going to uphold that reality with all her might and main. 

tl;dr She’s got cobalt blue and she’s gonna use it.

The Suits Are People, No. 184 S2E7 - Alana Bloom: “What was done to you doesn’t excuse what you did”

Alana’s boots: flat lace-up mukluks with faux fur trim. That’s why I got mixed up and thought her winter boots were mukluks the last time - I really had seen her wearing them in this scene.

Alana’s earrings: “The gold colored earrings are studded.” I guess we’re supposed to think Alana is wearing real gems and not rhinestones? Rhinestones are very tacky to wear during the day, and I can’t really imagine Alana ever doing so. If that’s the case, she’s upgraded from her gold creole hoops exactly when she is preparing to raise her social status from upper middle class to upper class (by dating Count Hannibal Lecter VIII).
