Hanadoki Con Write Up

Hanadoki Con was wonderful. I can't recommend this con enough to everyone whether you’re a panelist, guest, or attendee. I’ve been going to cons for over seven years now. I’ve done big cons (my first con ever was San Diego Comicon) and small cons, local cons and international conventions. While Hanadoki is small, it rates with Anime North (one of the largest in North America) as one of my top con experiences.

I attended the Con as a Guest, and staff made the experience excellent from start to finish. I’ve been a panelist for years, and what inspired me to start was a deep love of attending panels. Some I enjoyed and others left me wanting more but overall, I love the passion you get at cons and the opportunity to engage with people who share the same interests or share your own expertise or experiences.

At Hanadoki they value that experience. I was invited because of the panels I run, and each piece of programming was carefully chosen to be interesting and well rounded. There were first time panelists, interactive Q and As, tons of workshops, and a wide range of topics to meet the needs and interests of almost everyone. If you’re going to this con there’s always something to do.

There was also an outdoor stage and several concerts, along with other musical programming. It really cool to have live music right there at the con. There truly was something for everyone. Spacious artist alley/vendor hall, dances, formal ball, maid cafe. I liked the way the con was laid out in different areas so it never felt crowded and there was plenty of room to wander.

The venue was just perfect in so many ways. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a beautiful hotel and resort (and I’ve stayed in my fair share over the years). The setting was like a garden from a fairy tale (my instagram of the con has more pictures of landscapes than cosplay currently - it was just all so pretty). This is great, not just for enjoying yourself, but for cosplayers who want to take photos.

Often Cons are a rare opportunity for cosplayers to meet other cosplayers they want to do shoots with and to meet photographers who are looking to get new shots. Unfortunately, convention centers often don’t make for the most dynamic backdrop for a photo and even in hotels/resorts you might not find a great backdrop. Honestly, in my experience one of the hardest parts of cosplay photography is finding a good setting. A background that fits the look of the world you’re trying to bring to life with your cosplay. Hanadoki is a dream come true.

This weekend I was cosplaying from Ouran High School Host Club along with KrakenRoe, so the flowers, fountains, ivy covered walls and beautiful interiors were perfect. We did two photoshoots with two different photographers we met at con, one outside and one inside and I’m so excited to see the results (will post when I get them).

By the end of the weekend my friends all raved that it was the best time they’d ever had at a con/the best con ever! So if you like Cons I can’t recommend this enough. If you’re like me and attend cons as a panelist or guest, I recommend this convention even more!

The first day of the con I was contacted by the Guest Relations Division Head to let me know the Guest Lounge/Green Room would be available for my use and given the names of staff who were looking forwarding to meeting me. I was also invited to an Industry Party in the Tower’s Hospitality Suite, where there were complimentary drinks. The invitation was so thoughtfully worded too “Thank you for coming to our event, it means so much that you could attend--I hope this gives us an opportunity to show it!”

Unfortunately, I didn’t actually check my email until this Monday (I don’t have it set up on my phone due to spam) so I didn’t actually go to the Guest Lounge or Industry Party. I feel bad about that because I really wish I could have gone to thank the staff for everything. It honestly just means the world that they’re so thoughtful!

I feel so dumb now, but to be honest, I didn’t think to check my email because I didn’t expect anything so wonderful. Hanadoki is really amazing. I really appreciate how much they care about their guests. I can’t recommend this Con enough to everyone I know who has ever been a Guest or Panelist at a Convention. You don’t have to be an A-list celebrity to be treated with just as much appreciation for coming out and being part of the convention. 

On every single level, Hanadoki is incredible and I have no words of greater praise.

Everything @sultryvamps has me wear makes me feel so adorably perfect! Please support her beautiful soul, and her meticulously well constructed pieces. She brilliantly combined the craft of 3D printing and engineering, with her incredibly precise garments and accessories that are all initially hand sewn prior to being placed under a machine. And even though there may be differences between her initial design ideas and the final look, you can barely tell that she only had a month to construct all of the #fashionshow pieces with how well she styled it at #hanadoki | #hanadokicon.
