Hooverville vs. Hampsterdam: Corruption and despair

The goal of this blog is to compare and contrast the Hooverville narrative arc in “The Grapes of Wrath” to the Hampsterdam arc in HBO’s TV series “The Wire.”

Throughout the blog, I will post YouTube clips from “The Wire,” briefly describe the scene and then relate it to a plot point or theme found in Chapter 20 of “The Grapes of Wrath.”

A clear distinction that needs to be made is that I am not attempting to compare the migrant farm workers described in John Steinbeck’s novel to the addicts and drug dealers living in Hamsterdam. “The Wire” does a great job creating sympathetic characters involved in illegal activity and is an excellent look at the damage America’s drug war has on the inner city; however, I will focus on the corrupted law enforcement and the environment in both “The Grapes of Wrath” and the show.

Warning: Considering “The Wire” is an HBO show involving police officers, there is a fair amount of bad language in the videos linked. I made a judgement call to include the videos because I thought it would give the audience the best visual comparison to the “Grapes of Wrath” text while presenting the show as it was intended by the writers and creators of “The Wire.”
