MNL48 To Hold its First Seitansai Event this October 14

MNL48 will hold a Seitansai for October Birthday celebrants this coming Sunday, October 14, 2018 at the Movie Stars Cafe in Centris Station, Quezon City, Philippines.

MNL48 Abby hailed as Third Generation’s Center

As part of the three day online event of MNL48’s Third General Election, MNL 48 announces the final results of the Third General Election last Februay 20, 2021 on It’s Showtime where MNL48 Abby was declared as the Third Generation’s Center.

“I’m very happy, I’m so happy! I’m emotional right now because I can’t believe I’m the third Generation’s Center! I am excited to be the next Center for the 7th single! I am very thankful for the support of my fans and I’m going to do my very best to make all of my supporters proud of me.” said MNL48 Abby.

Before being elected as the Third Generation’s Center, Abby ranked at the 3rd spot during the Second General Election last 2019.

The said annual event is based on the fans’ votes on who they think should be included in the group’s Top 48 which is based on MNL48’s international sister group, AKB48.

The girls will be categorized based on their rankings. Official members who ranked 1 to 16 will be declared as the Senbatsu, Top 17 to 32 will be called as the Under Girls, and girls who will be on Rank 33 to 36 are official members of MNL48 and considered as reserves for Undergirls and/or Senbatsu in case of unavailability of absence of those group members. Members who will be voted as Top 37 to 48 will be Third Generation’s Kenkyuusei or trainees.

The ranking results were completely based on the public voting which happened from March 15, 2020 to November 30, 2020 om the group’s official website and Fan Clup app by using a voting ticket which can be acquired by purchasing any selected MNL48 merchandise and MNL48 6th Single Album.

The result was checked and verified by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) representative and Hallohallo Entertainment Inc. (HHE) officials to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the election data.

The fame garnered by the idol industries in South Korea and Japan has proven that idols are effective ambassadors to promote appreciation for local pop culture. Aiming for the same outcome, countries in Asia have also attempted to produce their own idol groups.

But as far as the Philippines is concerned, no group has successfully made it to the international arena nor passed the expectations of the Filipino majority. Because of this,  there is distrust as to  the capacity of the local entertainment industry to produce noteworthy idols.

However upon the announcement made by a famous idol group in Japan known as AKB48 in 2016, this pessimism have slowly transformed into hope. With AKB48’s branching out to the Philippines, fans are somehow given a guarantee that this time production will be guided by international standards and as a sister group of AKB48, the yet to be produced MNL48 (aka Manila48)  will be given a push in terms of immediate international recognition.

Following the announcement and responding to the anticipation of the fans, HalloHallo Entertainment, the company in charge with MNL48 has launched the MNL48 App in 2017.  Through this, girls from ages 15-20 can apply to become part of the group by signing up and uploading their photos and videos in the app or MNL48 website. Also to increase competition and awareness, a nationwide audition was done with the help of ABS-CBN. Finalists will be selected through voting system (in the app) and on Jan. 14, 2018 at 3 pm, elimination will take place leaving only the Top 200 (Ranks 1 to 200) applicants.

          Given that the deadline is fast approaching, all applicants are busy promoting their profiles in the hopes that their ranks increase by the day. Some have been promoting in local fan groups, some in their personal blogs or pages and some even broadcast using Facebook Live or Showroom. As an observer of the MNL48 app, it has become a tough competition given that the ranks and names change everyday and according to friends who are applicants, monitoring their position has become an essential day to day thing.

As to what MNL48 can contribute to the local pop culture scene, idol culture itself will be very new for the Philippines. Handshake events, concerts and most of all the everyday theater performances will be a novel experience for the Filipinos. The fan chants, the colorful light sticks and even the exhilarating overture prior to start of every performance will also peak the interest of a non-fan. The system of MNL48 itself is different from usual idol groups that might confuse as well as amaze everyone.

But more importantly, what I look forward to most is how the management will translate the songs of AKB48 into Filipino. Similar to how they did it in Jakarta (JKT48) and Bangkok (BNK48), ‘will our local language match the Japanese composed melody?’ is a recurring thought.

Nonetheless I also acknowledge the other kinds of trends that might be produced out of this phenomenon. Whether made by the future members of MNL48 or by the fans themselves, Filipinos are bound to create something that will become popular and I’m sure that it will substantially add and brighten Filipino pop culture or local idol culture.
