Khi năm học kết thúc cuối tuần này, chuyến nghỉ hè tại Nhật Bản của chị Nguyễn Thị Hồng Liên và hai con trai chính thức bắt đầu. Đây là lần thứ năm chị Liên đưa con ra nước ngoài nghỉ hè. Điểm khác biệt của chuyến này là chị chỉ lo hộ chiếu và đặt vé máy bay, toàn bộ chương trình do các con (17 tuổi và 14 tuổi) tự thiết kế."Lần này hai con sẽ học kỹ năng sinh tồn ở rừng 8 ngày đêm với các bạn người Nhật, người Mỹ", chị Hồng Liên, 40 tuổi, công tác trong một trường liên cấp ở Hà Nội nói. Bé lớn thông minh nhưng lười học, bé em ngoan nhưng chậm chạp. "Tôi nhận ra giáo dục là lấy cuộc sống để con trải nghiệm chứ không phải học trong một ngôi trường đắt tiền không giống đời thực", người mẹ nói.Năm năm trước, khi con lớn 12 tuổi, con bé 9 tuổi chị Liên chia ba tháng hè thành hai phần. Khoảng một tháng đầu kỳ nghỉ, các con được gửi đến các trung tâm kỹ năng sống gần nhà và đi thực tập ví dụ làm việc trong một công ty truyền thông hay làm phục vụ khách sạn, phụ bếp cho các nhà hàng. Nửa thời gian còn lại ba mẹ con đi nước ngoài. Chuyến đi đầu tiên năm 2018 là một khóa du học hè một tháng tại trường Hallet Cove ở TP Adelaide, Australia.Chị Liên lên kế hoạch chuyến đi này trước cả năm. Chị tìm hiểu và biết có 5 hình thức trại hè, trong đó lựa chọn trại theo kiểu du học ngắn hạn. Trường nhận học sinh từ lớp 4 nếu có cha mẹ tham gia và tiếng Anh tốt. Người mẹ cũng được cấp mã ra vào trường như con, được dự giờ học, đi tham quan cùng lớp của các con và làm tình nguyện viên trong trường."Tôi tìm được chương trình này do một người bạn giới thiệu. Từ tháng 12 năm trước mình đã liên hệ với trường. Nhà trường gửi thư xin phép Sở giáo dục của bang và hỗ trợ xin visa", chị cho biết.Ngay khi...

The event will also include opportunities for open mic.

“Off the Florida Keys/There’s a place called Kokomo/That’s where you wanna go/To get away from it all...” (”Kokomo”)  Unless you like being around pigeons, this small beach at Hallet’s Cove is not the place to go for tourists:)  But it offers a nice view of the Roosevelt Island lighthouse.  Getting back to the Beach Boys song, these lyrics are true of many other places in NYC: “We’ll get there fast/And then we’ll take it slow...”  (Photo taken on April 6, 2018)

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

Hallet’s Cove Beach is a quiet place with an incredible view of Roosevelt Island and Manhattan. Canadian Geese, Seagulls, and pigeons frequent this spot in Astoria, NY.

This quaint cove is right next to Socrates Sculpture Park and offers visitors a spot to launch kayaks or canoes.

Admittedly, I wasn’t surprised to see so much trash on such a small beach. Hallet’s Cove is a hidden gem, and one I plan to keep an eye on.

As a person who has always lived in close proximity to wilderness, perhaps I’m guilty of taking it for granted. Now that I don’t have easy access to an abundance of green spaces and wildlife, I plan to be more intensional about seeking these experiences out and examine the role I have to play in conversation.

but i am a girl on a rainy beach   more tarkovsky or bergman      cold and sad and not      really alone.   i have no reason for feeling lonely.

i sit on the loose sand    of Brighton beach,    the firm sand of Seaford,    the blackened rocks    of Hallet Cove.    i let the water swallow me    like a shell smooth and sharp full of sand
