Quick Bits:
Angel #3 interestingly gives us hints of the future, bringing characters to Angel in new and interesting ways, as he tries to save Fred from an evil looking to consume her. Great art from Gleb Melnikov and Roman Titov.

Avengers #22 begins “Challenge of the Ghost Riders” from Jason Aaron, Stefano Caselli, Jason Keith, and Cory Petit. Like the vampire war before it, this is kind of unusual territory for the Avengers, but it’s damn entertaining. Seeing the Avengers dip their toe in Marvel’s supernatural side is interesting.

Batman: Last Knight on Earth #2, like the first issue, is very strange. It’s still presented in such a way that we’re really unsure if what we’re seeing really is reality. Through simulations and dreams, everything is questionable. It’s like Batman is trapped in a dream-like hell. Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glapion, FCO Plascencia, and Tom Napolitano go hard for weird here. Strangest existential crisis and long, dark night of the soul I’ve probably ever read.

Batman: Secret Files #2 is a “tie-in” to “City of Bane” in the loosest sense of the word. It’s five stories featuring some of the villains in the “City of Bane” arc, (namely Joker, Psycho Pirate, Riddler, Hugo Strange, and Bane), but the narratives are wholly unrelated to anything going on in Batman proper. That said, they’re not bad. I think the best of the bunch is the Hugo Strange story from Steve Orlando, Eduardo Risso, Dave Stewart, and John Workman. It’s a very disturbing...experiment.

Black Panther #14 pushes the story closer to fully reconnecting to Earth, but in the mean time potentially a final space battle occurs between the Empire and the rebels. Ta-Nehisi Coates, Daniel Acuña, and Joe Sabino keep the tension building as it feels like a resolution approaches.

Canto #2 continues this beautiful fable from David M. Booher, Drew Zucker, Vittorio Astone, and Deron Bennett. The storytelling here is superb, playing with the nature of fairy tales and fables, while continuing the little clockwork knights quest to find his love’s heart. And the unlikeliest of friends that is incredibly endearing here.

Conan the Barbarian #8 is another issue with glorious guest art from Gerardo Zaffino as Conan comes home to Cimmeria and finds it not so much the same as when he left.
| Published by Marvel
Death’s Head #1 is a wonderful debut from Tini Howard, Kei Zama, Felipe Sobreiro, and Travis Lanham. It’s kind of a backdoor Wiccan & Hulkling series, but it’s great to see Death’s Head used again. The humour is very nice and it’s great to see Kei Zama playing with an aspect that was once part of the Transformers universe again. Zama draws some of the best bots.

Fantastic Four #12 kicks off Ben and Alicia’s honeymoon. It doesn’t go so great, despite a wonderful heartfelt beginning. The artwork from Sean Izaakse and Marcio Menyz. There’s also a back-up re-introducing the Future Foundation before their forthcoming new series from Jeremy Whitley, Will Robson, Daniele Orlandini, Greg Menzie, and Joe Caramagna. Nice bits of humour.

The Green Lantern Annual #1 is a bit of a weird one from Grant Morrison, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Trevor Scott, Steve Oliff, and Tom Orzechowski. The radio being terrorists and Air Wave being pretty straightforward, superhero stuff that we’ve come to expect from this series, the bit with Hal Jordan’s family, very strange.
| Published by DC Comics
Ice Cream Man #13 is another highly inventive story from W. Maxwell Prince, Martín Morazzo, Chris O’Halloran, and Good Old Neon, this time delivering a story of palindromes, able to be read backwards and forwards.

Justice League Dark Annual #1 further begins the changes to magic, rewriting the rules of it in the DC Universe, in this Swamp Thing story from James Tynion IV, Ram V, Guillem March, Arif Prianto, and Rob Leigh. It introduces us to a new guardian of the Green chosen by the Parliament of Flowers and just descends into nightmare from there. Wonderful seeds planted for stories to come, with art from March that is beautiful and strange.

Killers #1 is an entertaining debut of this next step in the ongoing story of the UK’s Ninja programme from B. Clay Moore, Fernando Dagnino, José Villarrubia, and Jeff Powell. It kicks off with Ninjas G and J being tracked down and called out for unknown purposes at this time, a mystery as to whether or not it’s connected to the appearance of the Jonin’s daughter asking for them to undertake a quest. Great art from Dagnino and Villarrubia.
| Published by Valiant
The Last Space Race #5 has some beautiful artwork from Alex Shibao and Natália Marques in this final issue.
| Published by AfterShock
Manor Black #1 is a great first issue from Cullen Bunn, Brian Hurtt, and Tyler Crook. This first issue introduces us to Roman Black, the head of a magical family reaching the end of his days, and a decision facing him as to who to choose as his successor, but there’s an added mystery of another family chased and murdered by strange, unknown magics and the police investigation into the murders. Great character development and the art from Crook is phenomenal.
| Published by Dark Horse
Queen of Bad Dreams #3 gets pretty heavy as Daher chooses to protect Ava and we get to see just how monstrous the Chase family are, even more than we’ve seen previously. Great character work and storytelling overall from Danny Lore, Jordi Pérez, Dearbhla Kelly, and Kim McLean.
| Published by Vault
Rat Queens #17 has some gorgeous artwork from Priscilla Petraites and Marco Lesko. Particularly when it comes to Maddie’s glasses. It’s interesting to see Ryan Ferrier, Petraites, and Lesko take the team into different directions as they continue to display a fractured base, causing all sorts of problems.

Red Sonja: Lord of Fools serves as a kind of bridge between the first arc and the forthcoming second in the current volume of the ongoing Red Sonja series. The first part of this issue gives us some insight into Dragan’s family and the prophecy that sent him out to conquer, where the second gives us a lesson on the truth as a curse. Great work all around from Mark Russell, Bob Q, Katie O’Meara, Dearbhla Kelly, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. Particularly in the stories within the stories, impressive changes in visuals.

She Said Destroy #3 inches closer to annihilation as Brigid’s forces attempt to overrun the last remaining hold-outs of fey. It’s fairly brutal as they’re “cleansed” with Brigid’s light. Great art from Liana Kangas and Rebecca Nalty as potentially big changes occur here.
| Published by Vault
Star Wars: Age of Resistance Special #1 gives us another trio of tales, this time focusing on Maz Kanata, Amilyn Holdo, and BB-8. All three stories are quite good. My favourite of the bunch is probably the Holdo tale from G. Willow Wilson, Elsa Charretier, Nick Filardi, and Travis Lanham. It’s funny, with an interesting insight into Holdo’s hair, and it’s great to see more Star Wars art from Charretier.
| Published by Marvel
Stranger Things: Six #3 gives us more glimpses of the Upside Down, Demogorgon, and Eleven’s proclivity towards Eggo waffles. It’s also interesting as to how Jody Houser is showing us just how creepy, manipulative, and really downright evil Brenner is.
| Published by Dark Horse
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #96 keeps “City at War” rolling along full speed ahead as it escalates, showing even more damage across the different factions, and just how insane Karai seems to be. Also, some very sad interactions between Jennika and Casey. Very disappointing behaviour from Casey. The art from Michael Dialynas and Ronda Pattison remains stellar.
| Published by IDW
Test #2 is another strange journey from Christopher Sebela, Jen Hickman, Harry Saxon, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. There’s a battle going on here between analog and digital, old forms and new, while we’re still trying to figure out the body modifications and upgrades that Aleph was a test subject of.
| Published by Vault
Thanos #4 continues in strange directions as mutiny amongst his crew is pushed, Proxima Midnight & co. keep humorously trying to pick a side, and Gamora continues her “education”. The offbeat comedy here from Tini Howard continues to be one of best things of this story.
| Published by Marvel
Venom Annual #1 is part of the “Acts of Evil” event currently running through Marvel’s annuals, featuring stories similar to the “Acts of Vengeance” crossover ages ago, pitting heroes against other heroes’ villains. In this case, Venom vs. Amadeus Cho’s Lady Hellbender. The lead story is very entertaining from Ryan Cady, Simone Di Meo, Mattia Iacono, and Clayton Cowles. With a nice emphasis on Eddie and the symbiote being stronger together. There’s also a back-up featuring Lady Hellbender’s origin from Emily Ryan Lerner, Victor Ibañez, Tríona Farrell, and Cowles. The artwork here being incredible.
