Ok so I forgot to put a checkmark on this note so delete this if I’m repeating….
No fr the shaggy gold would’ve been fine….what in the bungo stray dogs haircut….
SHSHSH IF YOURE REFERRING TO RECENT CH W MEGUMI ETC THEN YES I SAW!!! Lowk kinda crazy only three more chapters who else will they bring back….i wasn’t expecting so many survivors atp though honestly
Im crying he would totally proclaim himself to be “big bro ollie” SHSHVSHS and then you have snuffy looking from afar with a mix of “wtf is going on” and “ah young love” LMFAOO
Trueee ok but I can’t get over this “midfielder oat” LMFAOO i first thought of a bowl of oatmeal but forgive me I cannot decipher what this means my only other guess was goat…but fr too many extremist fans only the ones on the two ends of the spectrum…
Honestly that’s such a hiori move….bro doesn’t understand how to express his feelings properly due to obvious reasons so he just builds a whole ass house
Manifesting Karasu beats the player allegations….please clear his name….
That emoji is so sae LMAOO I’m just thinking about all the chaotic possibilities I didn’t realize aiku had so much potential LOL
HSJSHS dw we make up for it as much as possible….just gotta stock up on some hair wax and be like “style your hair like this or we’re over also you should get a beauty mark under your eye”
OOPS LMAOOO I think your random thoughts are funny though so if they don’t enjoy they’re mixing out LOLL but OOOOH BIRD THEME wait that’d be so on brand….bird theme….but yes a thought for later LOL
- Karasu anon
LMAOO no worries i did get your ask earlier but last night was a little crazy for me…long story short i returned to the party scene for the first time in a WHILE and in the span of a few hours my best friend got cussed out by a guy on coke, a man downloaded linkedin for me because drunk mira wanted to build he professional network (??) and then slid into my linkedin dms trying to date, a DIFFERENT guy who we literally met on the street after the coke guy kicked us out of the party we were at flirted w me for like half an hour on the side of the road while my friends talked to his friends and then he asked me to dinner (i told him i was too drunk to answer properly but actually i just thought he was unattractive and didn’t want to be mean 💔), AND THEN to make things worse i woke up today with an awful hangover and migraine 😭 threw up so hard i burnt my throat and sounded like a chain smoker for a solid hour it was horrible 😰 truly a night where bfb karasu was needed but alas…here we are…i’m finally able to look at my phone without my migraine flaring up though so i will answer you now 🫡
PLSSS NOT BSD i’ve never watched it but one of my mutuals (ironically the one who got me to watch bllk) loves it!! lowkey from what i’ve seen of her posts though yeah kaiser would fit right in 😭
no literally like i’m surprised at how lenient gege was honestly!! i will reserve my opinions until the last three chapters are out ig though KFJDKS i wonder how he’s going to wrap everything up though…
snuffy is so lost but he’s like “if it makes the kids happy 😄” so he’s supportive…omg but imagine snuffy as the final wingman boss??? after aiku gets every single ubers member (except maybe niko) a girlfriend he’s all satisfied and smug but still single himself and then SNUFFY of all people finds him a girl who he actually settles down for (at first because he’s scared of making snuffy upset but then it’s just because he genuinely falls in love with her)
LMAOO oat is just of all time kinda like goat is greatest of all time 😭 but yeah i just meant that hiori obv isn’t competing w sae and charles yet but he’s def not a horrible player either the way some people make him out to be…NO FR like why confess when he can just build a house and wait?? you KNOWWW karasu and otoya are like what the fuck when they find out that’s his strategy 😓 meanwhile rin is like yo that’s fire let me steal that HAHAHA
FREE KARASU FROM THE PLAYER ALLEGATIONS at best he’s that one rlly hot guy in the nerdy classes that the three girls also in the subject are in love with because he’s smart plus handsome plus respectful?? but he def wouldn’t be aware of it
no because it feels like my third eye has been opened like wow wingman aiku i was unfamiliar with your game!! there’s def many directions that i could go with it so as long as i’m still interested by the time i finish my reqs i’m def writing the series
FBSKDNSJSB random thoughts + irl lore + occasional writing is basically my blog tbh i love oversharing on here because nobody knows me irl so i can say wtvr i want 😭 very freeing…and yes a bird or flower theme would be rlly cool considering those are very miraverse ™️ concepts but we will see when we get there!!

I was bored so here’s some hc’s
I have a lot surprisingly so a lot of these are coming off the top of my head
-Laxus does not have good eyesight in the eye with a scar because that's where the lacrima was implanted. But he can still see out of it, it just gets blurry sometimes.
-If you had a lacrima implanted in you, there's gonna be a scar where it was implanted, and depending on what type of magic it is determine's the shape.
-Laxus's mother was born without magic and had the same thing happen to her but she was 16 when she had it implanted in her hand, she also had asked to have one and Laxus didn't.
-Laxus was born without magic thanks to his mother being born without magic too.
-When you get a lacrima implanted in you, depending on what type and how strong it is, depends on how sick you get. It's a counterbalance so people won't always get lacrima's implanted in them. The day it was implanted you get very sick as the body's reaction to an overwhelming influx of magic in your system, it happens every year in the same day it was implanted but the first time is the worst.
-"This is what I get for being emotionally slutty," Loke probably looking back on some kind of event.
-Loke with freckles!
-Loke sleeps when he's bored.
-Lucy suffers the worst writer's block ever and can't seem to ever get out of it no matter how hard she tries(I feel you girl).
-Plue really likes candy.
-Happy got Lucy a little frame that said "Life is better with cats" for her Birthday and despite how much Happy annoys her sometimes she keeps it on the desk she writes on and treasures it dearly.
-Do not let Erza play whack a mole or the games where you have to throw balls at clowns or vases you have to knock down to win a prize.
-Or let the dragon slayers play any driving game in general.
-Horror movies do not scare Aries, a lot of things do, but not horror movies.
-Mira really likes candles, but always gets them when they're on sale.
- Gray once got banned from a strip club after being mistaken for one of the strippers.
-Juvia could literally kill someone if she wanted to since our bodies are made of 60% of water but has no idea. She desires to learn more about blood magic if she so desires but hasn't.
-Levy wants to study rune magic but procrastination is her worst enemy, also people trying to attack the guild interrupting her every time she tries to cracks open a book to try and learn it. She's stopped trying to learn it in fear that if she tries someone will start attacking the guild again.
-Gajeel & Juvia and Gray & Loke are very underrated friendships that need more attention.
-Natsu chugged hot sauce and didn't even flinch. (A friend of mine did that and they scare me.)
-Lucy carries around a box of matches just in case Natsu wants a snack whenever they go on missions.( which is a lot of the time, a lot of her money has went into buying matches, she's had to go to plenty different stores to buy some because she's scared the clerk will think she's up to something and explaining it will only make her seem more suspicious.)
-Technically demon slayers are just exorcists but with more violence.
-In a human au Gray was an exorcist once.
But in normal Fairy Tail he takes side jobs on getting rid of demons from ordinary houses or other places which pays a lot.
-The wool Aries can make, can make really nice jackets. She's made jackets using it, but Loke stole it cause he likes comfy things in general.
-Loke actually needs his glasses, his glasses double as both sunglasses and normal glasses(someone I know someone who has the same type of glasses, I also wear glasses so.) due to being in Earthland too long, certain things started deteriorating like important sense's thankfully it wasn't on a major scale but on a longer one but it can't be fixed.
-Due to his eyesight deteriorating he has better hearing.
-Loke and Evergreen are nearsighted, Levy is farsighted.
-Ivan named Laxus because Laxus looked so much like his mother it only seemed fair.
-Laxus has an aunt who's his mom's sister. He talks to her through letters because she lives across the sea.
-"My little dragon," was a nickname that Laxus's mom gave him after he had gotten the dragon lacrima implanted in him against her wishes since if they were to do it, she wanted to do it when he was 16 like her but Ivan thought 8 was a much more appropriate age. (It was not). The only one who knows of this nickname for him is Makarov, his mom, his aunt, and his dad.
-His dad once used the name in a fight against him and he wanted to punch him so bad.
-If Mira were to swear she'd put sailors to shame.
-Erza has horrible road rage.
-I refuse to believe that Loke has two sets of ears, he does not have human ears and lion(cat ears?) ears at the same time just lion ears while in his celestial form and humans ones in his human form. He wears the piercing he used to wear on his human ears on his cat ears when in said celestial form, or outfit or whatever.
-The car ears(I'm calling them that now) are actual ears, you'd be surprised how many people try to pull on them in thinking that they aren't only to be pleasantly surprised that they in fact are. He likes to be pet behind them whenever they are there and he doesn't have regular human ears.
-He also despises chokers/collars with the very soul of his being. He might hiss at you if you bring one even close to him that's how much he hates them.
He doesn't even have a reason to he just hates them.
-Erza sometimes refers to her guildmates as "Feral children".
-Dragonslayers cannot whistle if their life depended on it.
-Loke knows French because most of his masters were in the French Court meaning it was mandatory for him to learn it. (I refuse to believe anyone with common sense would date him with that haircut he had in the human world, looked like something a 5-year-old would draw on a stick figure in an attempt to draw hair).
-Levy knows French, Arabic, and a few other languages.
-She fucks with people by talking to Loke in French and making them think that they're talking about that person why they aren't.
-Mira tried to learn French, she failed very badly since she kept forgetting the parts before the word and kept messing it up.
-The dragon slayers can purr when happy, growl when mad, and whimper when sad.
-The same thing applies to Loke but mostly because he's an overgrown cat.
-In order to date someone at the guild if you aren't in it you have to get Erza's blessing/asking her if it's alright since she's kinda the older sister and also the first one you wanna tell.
-Loke does not blow-dry his hair after he washes it because it just poof's up and there's no way to fix it other than to wash his hair again and look like a drowned cat for an hour or two. Though his hair is very soft after he washes it and it properly drys and isn't wet.
-Celestial spirits can dream, but their dreams consist of looking back on old memories from an outside viewpoint.
-Freed says "Let's have another round tonight" very unenthusiastically when drunk, just that sentence, no other sentence, just that one, only when he's drunk.
-Loke's good with finances along with fashion because one of his previous master, Valeria, pushed her financial work on him as a 'learning experience'.
-Loke was also offered a modeling job before and Lucy is super pissed since he of all people can get one but not her. (In the human au, he actual does modeling)
-If Mira and Loke were to team up it'd most like to be to help people in the guild get together.
-They would succeed.
-They both also like wine.
-Loke and Erza are bi, Mira is pan.
-Upon learning about this, Juvia considered Loke a love rival, be assured her that he was none and that he'd give her some advice to trying to date Gray because Gray and romance don't go well if she kept quiet about it.
-Gray ended up figuring it out and still holds it against him.
-Loke does not like being compared to a cat, he despises it so Gray as the best friend he is does exactly that.
-The two of them have blackmail on each other, and Gray often drags Loke into watching horror movies knowing he absolutely despises him with the very core of his being.
-Gajeel will fight anyone who hurts his best friend, Juvia.
Or anyone who hurts his guild but Juvia is different since she's been with him since they joined Fairy Tail.
Natsu once grabbed a pan straight out of the oven and horrified everyone in the room.

Dark Crystal Tik-Tok challenge: Calling s/o the wrong name.
Deet to Rian:
Deet was writing up her midterm paper comparing Stonewood and Grottons weapons for her elective history class. Thanks to Rian and Ordon, Deet had tons of research material to work with thanks to Ordon’s collection and Rian’s expertise. Though she was having a bit of trouble remembering what a specific sword was used for. She also made a mental note to call up Amri and see if he could send her a picture of his family’s old bombs that they used. She called to her boyfriend:
“Amri! I-I mean Rian”!
“Amri”!?
Oh crud.
Rian walked out in robe, pink facial mask on and his hair tucked under a towel.
“Of all the names to call, you call Amri? Your EX”?!
“Im so sorry”.
“Amr-Does Amri sounds like Rian? D-Do I look like an egotistical grottan with a bad haircut who makes horrible fashion choices ”?
“Hey”!
“Oh don't defend him Deethra, short or long just pick man”!
Deet stifled the growing lump of a laugh in her throat. “He was on my mind, I meant to call your name-”.
“Why was he on your mind? Why are you thinking about your ex-boyfriend when you have all this”?! Rian circled his hand around himself.
“I need help with my paper”. Deet giggled, finding humor in her boyfriend’s reaction.
“No you know what, get an F”.
“Huh”?!
“Yeah, you want to hurt your boyfriend’s feelings, you get privileges taken away. No more help, no more access to the family weaponry, you want help you get Amri”. With a final humph and quick tightening of his robe, he left Deet alone cackling on the bed.
Rian to Deet:
After a successful date, Deet recommended that they grab some burgers and fries from Wimpy.
Deet was driving despite Rian’s gentle protest, but the young Grottan loved using the car since it took to roads so well compared to a Grottan vehicle that was more suited for the paved sirt of her hometown. The problem was that Deets turns were quite harsh and sharp as if she was still trying to trek through the caves roads.
Rian held on to the coat handle for dear life as Deet skidded the car into the parking lot, nearly knocking over one of the trashcans by the outdoor seatings.
“For the love of Thra! Mira you're gonna kill us”! Rian screeched just as Deet spiraled to park perfectly.
“Who”? Deet put the car in park, brows raised in question.
“Huh”?
“D-Did you just call me by your ex-girlfriend's name”?
Did he? He was too terrified for his life to even comprehend what he was saying.
“Did I”?
“Yeah, did my driving make you think of her”? Deet grinned leaning in close to a flustered Rian, who was clutching his thumping heart.
“Probably, she drove crazy like you. Though she didn't have an excuse she just liked giving me a scare”.
“Awww, you’re still going to introduce me to her right? She sounds fun”. Grinned Deet, grabbing her purse from the back seat.
“Oh yeah, she’ll love you”. Rian breathed, shakingly getting out of the car.
His legs were so wobbly Deet had to help him inside the restaurant.
Brea to Kylan:
Brea was on her phone while Kylan was at the foot of the bed folding their laundry.
As she scrolled through her phone, she got an email from her friendly ex, Rek’yr. Apparently, he had tickets to a museum benefactor gala. He was going to go with his plus one but apparently, they had to cancel. So Rek’yr decided to offer the two tickets for her and Kylan to use. Delighted by an evening out, Brea immediately accepted the offer.
“Rek’yr what are you doing on Friday”?
“...”
“...”
“A-Are you...Were you addressing me”?
Brea slowly looked up from her phone, mortified as she realized her error. Kylan looked at her, a mix of confusion and hurt on his face.
“... I am so sorry”.
“I-Its fine, i guess. I mean...It was a mistake right”?
“Yeah”. Brea’s lips quivered, tear bubbles forming in the corner of her eyes. Kylan cooed, pulling her into his arms he rubbed her back as she began to cry.
“Shhh, it's okay Brea, I know it was a mistake”.
“I-I-Im so sorry”. She wailed, clutching Kylan’s snotty shirt.
“There is nothing to be sorry for Princess”. Kylan sweetly assured, kissing her temple as she continued to cry in shame.
Completely forgetting about the tickets.
Kylan to Brea:
As much as Kylan was getting used to Brea’s family members randomly coming over to their apartment, It was a hassle when one of her sisters just came over randomly. The latest ‘visitor’ was Brea’s second older sister, Tavra. Who apparently stopped by to drop off some leftovers she thought he and Brea might like then left in a hurry.
So when he heard the door open, he assumed it was Tavra coming back for something.
“Did you forget something Katavra”?
“Excuse me, Ka-who”?
Kylan looked from his book to his girlfriend's confused frown. Brea pushed her sunglasses over her eyes, hands on her hip and amber eyes narrowed.
“Who is Katavra”?
“W-Wha”?
“You heard me”. Brea sauntered over, her intimidating demeanor forcing Kylan to scramble to the side of the couch. “Who is Katavara”?
“Is this a trick question or are you having fun with me”?
“Kylan, do I look like I'm having fun with you”. Brea leaned over, caging Kylan with her petite body. “I'll ask again.Who.Is.Katavra”?
“...Your sister”. Kylan warily answered.
Brea blinked, irritation morphing into realization. Her mouth opened in an “oh”.
“You mean Tavra”?
“Did you forget your sister’s name”?
“Well I mean, no one calls her Katavra so...Yeah I forgot her name. Sorry larva”.
“For the love of Thra woman”.
Mothria to Gurjin:
The best thing about being chosen to dance in the Sog community’s up-and-coming festival was that Mothria had an excuse to ditch Pop-Pa’s excruciating farmwork. To replace it with an excruciating hour of practice, though it's not all bad. It was nice to spend time with Naia, as both of them were partnered up to dance the part of the maiden. Although, having your ex-boyfriend as the head director can be quite awkward. Thankfully, Geal was very professional and only talked to her when needed.
Unfortunately, when Mothria got home after a long rehearsal her greeting was a little off.
“Geal I'm home, wanna get take out”?
“The FUCK you just call”?
Mothria stiffened as Gurjin stomped over to the foyer, arms crossed and eyes burning with anger.
“Did I call you Gael by accident”?
“Yeah, you did”.
“I messed up bad huh”?
“Mm-hm”.
“Couch tonight”?
“I'll get it set up for you”.
Mothria didn't move as Gurjin’s locs hit her snout as he swiftly turned to march to the linen closet.
“I love you”. She called.
“Love you too, but you're still on the couch tonight”.
Gurjin to Mothria:
If there was one thing Gurjin liked doing, it was messing with Mothria when was in a pissed mood. Not to pissed that would kick him out the loft, but pissed enough to at least get kicked out of the room for thirty minutes to an hour.
And he cooked up the perfect way to agitate his love moth even more.
His ‘victim’ was sitting at the kitchen island on her phone probably venting to his twin. With natural born charm, Gurjin slid to Mothria’s side wrapping a comforting arm around her shoulders.
“Hey, Lovemoth, why so sad”?
“Oh, just dealing with family drama Gur-Gur”. She sighed, leaning into his touch “Not to be a brat but can you cuddle me later. We can watch whatever I just want snuggles”.
“Of course, Resha”.
Gurjin bursted out laughing as he was roughly shoved on his rump.
“I freaking hate you”! Mothria growled, stomping their shared bedroom after gently punching Gurjin below the belt.
“OOF”! Gurjin guffawed as he clutched his gentiles “M-Mothy what about cuddles and movies”? “You're banned from cuddles and movies! I'm going over to Naia’s”!
“Can I come”?
“NOOOOO, people who call me by ‘Resha’ don't get my love”!
The fuming Mothria stepped over her still laughing boyfriend who was now rolling on the floor. Grabbing her purse and keys.
“Love you”! Gurjin wheezed, tears in his eyes.
“Eat sog”! Screamed Mothria, slamming the apartment door. Leaving a chukaling Gurjin on his own for the next few hours.

Current-Reads (27/04/2020 - 03/05/2020) 🐸🍇
(Disclosure: I know a couple people this week, like Billie Collins from The Writing Squad. I know Elizabeth Ellen through Mira Gonzalez and her editorial help with my poetry. Everybody else be a stranger to me. 😢)
Preface as always: Every Sunday without fail I throw up the freshest literature and photography I’ve read over the week, sometimes it’s a book, or a piece I saw in a magazine or an online zine, maybe it’s something I saw on social media, etc. If I add ‘RECOMMEND’ next to a few of the titles, but that’s not to say I don’t recommend all of them, I just love some pieces more than others. Not everything will be everybody’s cup of tea, yanno, c’est la vie. And any titles that you see in bold are hyperlinked so if you click or tap them they’ll direct you straight to the source… or shopping basket.
Bit of an off-week this week, my dog hasn’t been very well so my mind has been elsewhere, and that Annie Ernaux review took it out of me, ha. I was terrified to write negative criticism, openly, and it’s not even like I was saying, “I just didn’t enjoy this writing”, like the Ernaux text genuinely has politically biased implications. It’s really hard writing about the genocide in Algeria and my family, because 1. France has done a lot of work to avoid its discussion so they’re never held accountable, 2. A lot of people don’t really know about it, and 3. A lot of people don’t care, like a lot a people, the annihilation of the Amazigh hasn’t even entered social discourses like it has with Native Americans or the Aborigines, and these are still discourses which are a lot of the time, ignored. Getting people to just be aware of this, takes time, centuries even, and so many voices. I do feel like I’m screaming into a void, and I’m not surprised Fitzcarraldo Editions didn’t pay much attention to the review. It probably seemed impertinent of some random stranger to call out a 78-year-old feminist for her furtive privilege and non-condemnation of France’s role in genocide in Algeria. Afterwards I had a massive cup of tea, and took a minute out. The amazing and lovely work I’ve read this week has been like comfort-food. Current-reads this week include Billie Collins’s The Haircut, an excerpt from ‘Bluets’ from Elizabeth Ellen’s Poems collection which I still can’t believe came out two years ago, and I rediscovered this poem on one of Hobart’s web features. I also read a review Jon Petre did for SPAM zine on Cathy Galvin’s Walking The Coventry Ring Road With Lady Godiva, published by Guillemot Press (which is run by one of my old tutors and friend, Luke Thompson). I adored these beautiful pieces for 3AM Magazine’s Poem Brut series, from Kayleigh Cassidy, to do man and other poems. FINALLY, last but not least, I read two wonderful writers on Split Lip Magazine, one from their 2019 site, JJ Peña’s manguitos, pears and grapefruits, and Threa Almontaser’s I Crack An Egg.
I also want to say beforehand that I check all the writers and their social media (i.e. I stalk them and their bios) to make sure I absolutely get their pronouns correct, I don’t just assume hes and shes, etc. So in case anyone’s concerned about that, dw I do this shit properly.
Let’s get into it.
***
Threa Almontaser’s I Crack An Egg on Split Lip (RECOMMEND): Cooking, family and religion. That’s the fucking trinity here. If it weren’t for the fact that I practised Islam when I was kid and my dad’s Muslim, I wouldn’t understand a lot of these references. The vernacular here is important, because what Threa does, is she makes you aware. She pulls you into her periphery, and then into her focalisation. It’s steeped in her habitus. This poem’s peppered with Arabic utterances, (wallah = I swear to God), references to the imam, henna and hijab. She negotiates the relationships of mother and marriage, tests the tensions in personality, admonishes expectations in the kingdom of her mother’s kitchen. I felt looked in the eye when I read this poem. Women are the backbone of everything. And Threa Almontaser’s one to watch.
Kayleigh Cassidy, to do man and other poems on 3AM Magazine (RECOMMEND): These are so cool, I’ve got a massive smile on my face rn. I loved these visual word collages. Each one is so individual in its own right and they’re so witty and relatable, haha. Particularly ‘to do’ and ‘an idea woke me’... They’re symptomatic of Gen Z anxieties and frustrations, they wrestle between our office selves and our artist selves. Just loved them. Adored Kayleigh’s bio too, “Kayleigh is dyslexic, working class and a massive fan of the moon; full, half or gibbous.”
Billie Collins’s The Haircut (RECOMMEND): Billie Collins’s writing is so familiar and real and intimate. It’s like home to me. I really loved this piece she did for the Writing Squad’s Staying Home series. I’ve been making my way through each of the works on there slowly, they’re so fantastic. Since the lockdown, we’ve been displaced by home haircuts and DIY. This piece is about the intimacy of giving your dad a hair cut written in the form of a contract (it echoes of tenancy agreement also, does anyone else get that?) / a play, I mean it’s amazing. The familial camaraderie and realism makes the scene so accessible and visceral. The opening immediately grabbed my attention: “This is the first time I’ve ever given my Dad a haircut. I’m reluctant, but have agreed to do it on the following terms:
1. PARTY A [Hereafter: THE HAIRDRESSER] agrees to cut the hair of PARTY B [Hereafter: THE HAIRDRESSEE] under the proviso that no matter what happens, no matter the appearance of the resultant effect [Hereafter: THE HAIRCUT], THE HAIRDRESSEE is not allowed to get angry at THE HAIRDRESSER.”
The dialogue is a harmless bicker, which fades away as the focalisation of the speaker comes to the fore. It lessens in wit and exposes a more vulnerable and moving perception to the task in hand. It becomes tender, a moving cut. The ‘I’ finds a poignancy in being guided to cut the father’s hair, and the hairdresser becomes transfixed by other details, of skin and touch, in age and aging. It made me cry. Especially that reference to Tom Waits. Bloody hell, Billie.
‘Bluets’ from Elizabeth Ellen’s Poems collection, HOBART (RECOMMEND): Someone finally says it. Maggie Nelson’s Bluets wasn’t that great. Thank you Elizabeth Ellen. Elizabeth’s writing is like sitting in your trackies eating Chinese food and having a good sob. Other people have said similar things in that vein. It’s really the best of kind of writing, the most accessible and universal. This whole collection is about being messy, about revelling in your messy womanhood, being a messy fucking woman and having messed-up feelings and writing messed-up writing. It’s deeply self-contemplative and irritated, it’s also watchful. ‘Bluets’ is a sneak peek of a collection I adore, and keep going back to. This one poem singularly unpacks the tensions of neatness and neat perceptions of femininity, tight structures and the constrictive corseting of feelings Elizabeth Ellen so abhors. Let it all out. Let it all hang right out.
JJ Peña’s manguitos, pears and grapefruits (RECOMMEND): This work is just absolutely gorgeous, and it was in Split Lip over a year ago. There is a tartness, a bitter acidity, a bite that you find in these sweetnesses from JJ Peña. The way we’re all hanging fruit from a family tree. The intergenerational trauma. The pain and weight of parental imperatives and suppositions. It’s the honesty and the enviable metaphor that makes this work so beautiful, it’s so vivid. Like: ‘the island treasures into golden sunsets & moons, into pandulce plazas & beaches where women who eat the sun walk around. no other place, he says, bleeds & blooms the sun.’ The language is so enriching, you can so clearly envision what he’s talking about, and how these landscapes and skies collide with more sinister and unpleasant experiences, of secret-keeping, sexuality and rape.
On a personal level I connected with this writing for the way JJ negotiates with questions of heritage and self-identity. There’s a huge pain in being divided between lands and culture and blood. When I was a kid, I used to tan like my Algerian father, I’d go mahogany, and I’d get crocodile skin in the sun. My mum used to have to rub olive oil on me. Now, I’ve still got that thick Kabyle-girl, North African skin from my dad, but since I’ve grown up, I don’t tan like that anymore, for whatever inexpicable reason, I burn worse than my English mother. And I’m lighter-skinned than her too, like cheesecake white. And I understand what JJ means when he refers to his father, who in ‘grapefruits’, declares: i got that peña blood. wood skin. My father’s the same. And I get it, I don’t know why I’m not the same either, JJ. But I think the exact same thing: I might have hardened skin if I’d spent my life working in my grandmother’s fields, picking olives.
I’d hate to give any more away about this writing, so go ahead and read it and have a look at some of JJ’s more recent work in Barren Magazine.
Jon Petre, on Cathy Galvin’s Walking The Coventry Ring Road With Lady Godiva, SPAM zine (RECOMMEND): People never recommend reading a review of a book, they always just omit that part, and recommend the book straight-off. But a lot of the time, I wouldn’t know half of what to read if it weren’t for reviews. And writing reviews takes up a lot of time and a lot of reflection. I feel it’s necessary to review reviews, because they’re equally a piece of writing in and of themselves, and therefore an extension of the art being reviewed. I really loved this piece from Jon Petre. It not only made me want to buy Cathy Galvin, it made me want to read more of Jon. The review is as much an explanation of this psychogeographical poetry and Coventry’s ‘edgeland’ landscapes, as it is a wonderful piece in its own right. It is informative and witty, and its descriptions are succinct, measured and quite beautiful actually. I just loved this part in the opening paragraph: ‘I have always wanted to explore the edgelands. They are everywhere, hidden in plain sight, an alt-highway running into the hidden psyche of ostensibly dull places. If you want to get to the heart of somewhere stick to the edges.’
I also really enjoy the way Jon relays and quotes sections of the poems, he’s selective and careful. He recreates the oscillations in Galvin’s collection in his sentence structures: ‘Coventry’s punk scene is an especially positive part of the story ‘England’s dreaming Pistols and punk / peaches on beaches’ are up against ‘that figure head – / not what she seems, the Queen, the fascist regime’. Revolution and radical change has to start somewhere, as Lady Godiva herself proved – why not at the Coventry ring road?’
He’s chatty, he’s got a voice. ‘Galvin is clearly having a lot of fun mixing her references to Coventry history and other texts – quoting The Specials alongside Dante, which is 100% my shit – and stitching letters to Phillip Larkin and legalese about the ring road’s construction into art.’ He’s not sterile, he doesn’t write reviews that border on pretension, he’s not a ridiculously irritating sesquipedalian-ist (someone who likes to use big words, irony intended). He makes the books he reviews worth investing in, and you don’t need 10 tabs open to look up words he’s saying. He writes with precision and with feeling. SPAM zine in general is absolutely fabulous, and boasts some amazing writers.
***
Right, I need a cup of tea. Next week’s review is Tiana Clark’s I Can’t Talk About The Trees Without The Blood. Absolute bleeder. I might be slower to the take next week because I’ve got my MA viva (on Zoom, wahey) and all sorts, so bear with me. Stay safe love-bears.

What to Expect During Your First Visit to a Hair Salon in Mira Road
Visiting a hair salon for the first time can be both exciting and overwhelming. Whether you're looking for a fresh cut, vibrant colour, or a luxurious treatment, understanding what to expect will help you feel more comfortable and prepared. If you're planning your first visit to a hair salon in Mira Road, here's a guide to help you navigate the process and make the most of your experience.
Warm Welcome and Consultation
Upon entering the hair salon, you'll be greeted by the receptionist or salon staff. Hair salons in Mira Road are known for their friendly and professional service, ensuring every client feels valued. The first step of your visit is usually a consultation with a stylist or hair expert. During this time, you can discuss your hair goals, concerns, and the services you're interested in.
The stylist will assess your hair type, condition, and texture to provide personalized recommendations. Whether you're aiming for a new haircut, hair colour, or treatment, this consultation is crucial to achieving your desired results.
Exploring Services and Pricing
Mira Road salons typically offer a wide range of hair services, from basic cuts and blowouts to advanced treatments like keratin, rebonding, and nanoplastia. If you need help deciding which service to choose, the stylist can explain the benefits and outcomes of each option.
It's also an excellent time to ask about pricing so there are no surprises at the end of your appointment. Hair salons in Mira Road are often transparent about their service rates, and many provide package deals or discounts for first-time clients.
Cleanliness and Professionalism
One of the most reassuring aspects of visiting a professional hair salon is the high standards of hygiene and professionalism. In Mira Road, salons maintain clean workspaces and use sterilized tools for each client. From sanitized combs and scissors to fresh towels and capes, the salon will ensure a safe and hygienic experience.
The professionalism of the staff is also evident in how they handle your hair. They ensure that each procedure is done with precision and care. You can expect polite, well-trained stylists who focus on delivering quality results.
Relaxing Hair Wash and Massage
A trip to the hair salon wouldn't be complete without a relaxing hair wash. Most salons in Mira Road offer a complimentary wash before any major service. This cleanses the hair and helps you relax before the styling begins.
During the wash, expect a soothing scalp massage that relieves tension and prepares your hair for the next steps. Many salons use premium shampoos and conditioners that are tailored to your hair type, ensuring that your hair feels nourished and refreshed.
Expert Hair Styling and Treatments
Once your hair is prepped, it's time for the actual service. If you're getting a haircut, the stylist will carefully shape and trim your hair according to your preferences, taking into consideration your face shape and hair texture. For hair colouring, the stylist will apply the chosen shade with precision, ensuring even coverage and vibrant results.
If you're opting for a treatment like keratin or hair rebonding, the process will involve several steps, including the application of specialized products and heat treatments. These services can take some time, so be prepared to spend a few hours at the salon if you're getting an extensive treatment.
Personalized Aftercare Tips
Once your service is complete, the stylist will provide personalized aftercare tips to help you maintain your new look. Whether it's advice on how often to shampoo, which products to use, or how to style your hair at home, these tips are essential for keeping your hair healthy and vibrant.
Most salons in Mira Road also sell professional hair care products, so if you want to maintain salon-quality results, consider investing in recommended shampoos, conditioners, or styling products.
Payment and Scheduling of Future Appointments
After your service is done, you'll be directed to the front desk for payment. If you're satisfied with your stylist's work, this is also the ideal time to schedule future appointments. Many salons in Mira Road offer loyalty programs or discounts for repeat customers, so be sure to inquire about any ongoing promotions.
