there is not a lot of advertisement for Iceland but a lot of advertisement for sweden and denmark!
I think most people (except muricans) wanna go locally, but they don't know where to go because there's not much information😔 Denmark is like the ultimate holiday paradise for norwegians, and Sweden the place where they can go to get cheap stuff ( ≧ᗜ≦)
I would love to go locally (to any country in general) but I don't know too much about other cities/places except Reykjavík, because it's the only city we hear anything about (◞‸ ◟)💧
From what I've heard from my mom, tourists from Scandinavia tend to be the best tourists, but I think it's because they also hate how American tourists are.
My biggest biggest tip is to simply stay for longer, travel slower, traveling super fast though iceland is what most tourists do and it's the exact reason that causes overtourism and it sucks
I've been to like so many cities and towns in iceland in my life, I come from Hafnarfjörður which is a town south of reykjavik, and I've been to húsavik, Akureyri and of course reykjavík and Hafnarfjörður. Most of them I visited as a kid, especially back when I still lived on iceland. Akureyri is very very beautiful, especially since it's up north of iceland. My mom grew up there on a farm.
If the only tourists were Scandinavians I think Icelanders wouldn't mind in the slightest, there wouldn't be as many problems as there are
And in my time living in norway..ive gone to Sweden and Denmark a handful of times and it is definitely that, I live close enough that I can take a boat to Denmark which is pretty fun and I've done so a few times. And I've driven to Sweden many many times because my amma (grandma) moved from iceland and has been living there. In the middle of the woods with her cats.

Actually. I am gonna talk about Keiko a bit because I’m sad today and…I love him and I think everyone is a little too harsh about his story. So let’s take a look at it.
Keiko the orca was the star in the 1993 film “Free Willy” alongside his human costar Jason Richter. How he came to be in that role is a rather long complicated and sad story I don’t want to dwell on all too much but the long and short of it is this: He was captured off the coast of Iceland in 1979, where he was then sold to the Icelandic Aquarium in Hafnarfjörður. Three years later he was sold to Marineland Ontario, of Kiska the loneliest whale in the world fame (they are reunited now may they both rest in peace). It’s reported that that’s when he started performing and under their care he developed skin lesions and became unappealing to the public so was sold to Reino Aventura, an amusement park in Mexico City, Mexico, in 1985.
Reino Aventura is the park featured in the film Free Willy, and the enclosure there is indeed Keiko’s real habitat that he lived in.
The interesting fact of the matter is that Keiko became the star of the movie because no American marine park (or any other park in North America) wanted to be featured in a film displaying how they kept their whales, and centered around freeing them. Reino Aventura had no such qualms. The cast and crew all became very attached to Keiko, as well as those at the marine park who cared for him. He was often sickly, housed in water too warm and in too small amounts for him. Simply put, Keiko was dying a slow and painful death. He was underweight and often experienced skin conditions.
I don’t feel the need to talk about the project to free him and how it came about everyone knows that.
What I do want to talk about is the excellent care he received after work began. He was rehabilitated in Oregon for a time, and grew stronger. Trained to hunt fish on his own and be a little more independent. In September of 1998 he was flown back to Iceland to spend time in a sea pen there where he could choose to come and go via the US Air Force.
Once in Iceland he spent some time in a sea pen, and then eventually chose on his own not to return to it. Many people speak misguidedly on the fact that Keiko never integrated with a pod. This is not fully true. Keiko spent much time around and in nearby pods, and was observed interacting as much as he wished to. In the Summer of 2002 Keiko disappeared, undergoing a migration to Norway alongside a pod of wild orcas. When he reappeared Skålvik Fjord he sported signs of even having tried to mate. Yes he sought out contact with human beings but that is not such a sad thing. He chose it on his own terms. He had freedom, and choices for the first time in his life ever. His caretakers relocated to Norway and continued to conduct boat-follows with Keiko for the next 15 months. On the basis of girth measurements and blood tests, it was assumed that Keiko had fed during his 900-mile (1500 km) journey from Iceland to Norway.
Keiko died of pneumonia in the winter of 2003, by one of his beloved caretakers sides. It was not a long nor a painful death, and pneumonia is often the claimer of many wild cetaceans. He lived to about 27, which is considerably longer than most orcas in captivity and very close to the wild lifespan. He was given many more years than he would have had if he’d stayed in Mexico.
The point is. I’m tired of everyone saying he only had 15 months of freedom when it simply isn’t true. He was in ocean water in his natural environment for upwards of five years, and never once seemed distressed by this fact. He enjoyed the last years of his life and we dishonor his legacy by implying otherwise. He was a beautiful and happy soul.
I highly recommend the documentary Keiko the Untold Story, a passion project put together by those who knew and loved him and worked passionately to give him the best life he could have.

10: Godspeed You! Black Emperor // 'Allelujah! Don't Bend Ascend
'Allelujah! Don't Bend Ascend Godspeed You! Black Emperor 2012, Constellation Records Godspeed You! Black Emperor are famous for their elaborately packaged vinyl releases, and 2012’s excellent comeback record ‘Allelujah! Don’t Bend Ascend’ is no different, including a 12” x 48” poster and a 7” single. But what many fans may’ve missed is the YouTube URL etched into the wax runoff. As we celebrate 11 years since the record’s release, I thought it would be fun to rank all of the musicians who’ve ever played in Godspeed, including frames from their appearances in this cool secret video. (Apologies for the quality, the video was uploaded in 240p!)
Members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Ranked
16. Tim Herzog (drums)
Of all the drummers GY!BE have ever had, Tim Herzog is the only one who hasn’t been trusted with percussion. I think that says it all right there.
15. Bruce Cawdron (drums, percussion) I once saw Cawdron’s main band Esmerine do a great set at the Ottawa Jazz Festival, and that’s enough for me to rank him pretty highly, relative to the hapless Tim Herzog anyway.
14. Aidan Girt (drums, percussion) I don’t really remember why I ranked Aidan Girt the highest among Godspeed’s drummers, but he’s been there the longest and you'd think he'd have learned by now.
13. David Bryant (guitar) Quick, name your favourite David Bryant guitar solo in Godspeed! Can’t think of one either eh? That’s why he’s only #13.
12. Grayson Walker (accordion) One of those instruments you'd maybe make a joke about Godspeed having had. But they did have it, for a few weeks in 1997.
11. Peter Harry Hill (bagpipes) One of those instruments you'd maybe make a joke about Godspeed having had. But they did have it, for a few weeks in 1997, on the CD version of F♯ A♯ ∞.
10. Mauro Pezzente (bass) Some might quibble about my rating Mauro Pezzente so low, given that he is one of GY!BE’s three founding members. But I ask you this: if he were that good on bass, do you think they’d have had to get a second one?
9. Thea Pratt (French horn) GY!BE’s home of Montréal is, famously, a Francophone-majority city, and Thea Pratt’s work on French horn between 1995 and 1997 was important for ensuring locals would accept the band long enough for them to complete their stated goal of transforming the Mile End into a hip Anglophone enclave.
8. Roger Tellier-Craig (guitar) Tellier-Craig only lasted six years in GY!BE, by far the least of the band’s elite division of guitar players. But he gets extra in memorium points for giving his life in Godspeed’s tragic knife fight with Sigur Rós in downtown Hafnarfjörður.
7. Thierry Amar (bass) GY!BE’s second bass player, who slotted himself into the lineup next to the unreliable Mauro Pezzente in 1995. Amar gets extra points for stabilizing Godspeed’s notoriously turbulent bass situation, as the band has not seen a need to add a third bassist during Amar’s 28-year administration. Not yet anyway.
6. Norsola Johnson (cello) In addition to having the best name of any Godspeed member (Norsola the Hidden One), Norsola also plays the cello, an instrument that seems essential to their sound but that they have apparently done without since 2003. This doesn’t sound right, and I should do more research.
5. The Mononymous Christophe (violin) Arguably the rarest Emperor, and therefore the most collectible.
4. Mike Moya (guitar) Sometimes you need to leave band the band you founded just before its period of greatest success, so they learn where they’d be without you. That’s exactly what Mike Moya did when he exited Godspeed two years before Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven! and Yanqui U.X.O. He then kinda sidled back into the back row when they took the publicity photos for this 2012 reunion. I’ve always respected that.
3. Sophie Trudeau (violin) Violin has long been known as ‘the thinking person’s guitar,’ and Sophie seems very thoughtful indeed.
2. Karl Lemieux & Philippe Léonard (projections) I call them GY!BE’s Lumiére Brothers because they are also conjoined twins who make films.
1. Efrim Manuel Menuck (guitar) Who else could it be but the Big Cheese, Mr. You! Black Emperor himself. Thanks for everything, man.
You can take a trip into the wayback machine and watch the secret video yourself here. Enjoy!
10/365
