fehu is the first letter in the elder futhark alphabet. it begins the first aett, ruled by freyr and freyja and concerning things in the mortal realm. in reconstructed proto-germanic, it means wealth in the form of livestock, most likely cattle or sheep. these assets would have been mobile, exchangeable, and renewable, making them a vital aspect of any household’s net worth. thus, fehu is commonly associated with prosperity, sustenance, and good fortune. depending on the diviner’s intent, drawing an upright fehu could foretell stable cash flow, a promising state of health, or the just rewards of shrewd investment, whether physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual. 

drawn in reverse, fehu serves as a warning of some impending loss of whatever the diviner has been working to obtain. this loss may come in the form of a folly of overconfidence, an unavoidable freak accident, or a betrayal by close friends and family, as in the ancient runic poems. it may, too, be in connection with corruption or greed on the part of the diviner themself. in this context, fehu’s advice is to maintain wise priorities and an objective view. thus, when the setback strikes, the diviner will know whether the situation calls for conserving or distributing their hard-earned wealth.

Let there be light

HYT’s FLOW watches mirror the brand’s relentless quest to bring innovation that resonates with its contemporary context. Literally speaking, light brightens what already exists; figuratively it brings deeper understanding. The latter describes these timepieces’ purpose in the watchmaking arena. They are about the possibilities that emerge when performance enters new territories. Triggered by a pusher, a specially developed micro-generator stores and dispels the energy to activate 8 or 13 meticulously positioned LEDs, according to the version. These then visibly spread light evenly across the dial, mimicking a natural wave. Element by element, the illumination reveals the various “stories” that make up the piece’s time-telling capacity, never allowing us to lose sight of time’s unstoppable flow.

Two variations on the HYT FLOW theme, both limited editions, play very different games with the emitted light.

On one, a dome of 73 baguette-cut 1.7-carat diamonds dances spectacularly to rhythms derived from the 13 LEDs below it. Just as time’s flow is constant, this unique horological light show is a theatre for continual, energized change uniting jewelry and light thanks to the dynamic reflection and refraction. Innovation meets beauty and quite literally dances the night away.

Another execution addresses the concept of infinity through a precisely tapered vortex shape. Here the imagination is invited to visualize a revolving, apparently never-ending flow down towards the bellows, as a side-aperture welcomes the light emitted by 8 LEDs. The limitlessness of infinity fits neatly into the focus on time’s inevitable transience.

Tension please

In the HYT FLOW, opposites do far more than attract – they form a rich source of design energy. An apparently contradictory combination of liquid and electric light set the scene; the bold asymmetrical shape of the 51 mm case and vibrant colour choices pick up the thread. A visual wave sweeps around its side, reminding that stopping time’s momentum is never an option. This well-considered curve tempts the eye to explore new perspectives on time, a vital element of modern life.

A ring of Super-LumiNova® documents the antithesis of night and day. Polished accents on the circular-brushed case underline specific elements such as bezel angles. This is an appropriate overture to the three-dimensional character of the opaline-finished grey dials, where “metallic” and “velvety” sit together comfortably in the descriptive dictionary. Sophisticated electro-erosion adds a further signature to the theme of tension with its use of electric current to physically cut out strips of metal to obtain the wave illusion. The high-energy appearance of the dials’ backgrounds contrasts with the calmer, more minimalistic time indication. Concave and convex surfaces tease each other, as the eye peeps behind the waves to catch a glimpse of the intriguing mechanical mechanism below.

Jewelry watches at this year’s Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie that closed its doors last week were tell-tale signs of a sparkling vintage that promises to be rich in color and carats.

The absence of Van Cleef & Arpels, a historic pillar of the salon, whose bejeweled creations have invariably been show-stopping marvels of poetry at past editions of the fair was deeply felt this year.  Nevertheless, those who participated in the annual watch industry rendez-vous displayed their savoir-faire in crafting metals and setting precious stones with a range of exquisite timepieces that, complicated or not, dazzled and delighted the fair’s visitors.

At Bovet 1822, recital under the moon and stars Making its debut at the Salon this year was Bovet 1822, the Swiss brand best known for its sophisticated mechanisms and its artful gem-setting, engraving, and miniature painting.

Bovet presented different versions of its Récital 23, a complicated timepiece encased for the first time in an oval-shaped “writing slope” case, a Bovet signature inspired by the shape of an inclined writing desk.  A jeweled model in the Recital 23 line was encased in gold and decorated with a bezel set with round or baguette-cut diamonds, with an option that was entirely paved with round diamonds.  The diamond-setting made for a sparkling frame around the poetic three-dimensional moon phase shaped like a “hemispherical dome” in the top part of the dial, while the hours and minutes were relegated to an off-center dial at 6 o'clock.  What is time when you can have the moon and the stars?

At Piaget, an Extremely Lady-like “Python” Piaget has for some time now been exploring its archives for new creative possibilities with the iconic shapes that date back to its 1960s repertory, taking historic models and adapting them to modern tastes.  

This is a “golden year” for Piaget whose tradition of goldsmithing is perpetuated by artisans in its Plan-les-Ouates workshops.   The mastery required for Piaget to create different types of hand-carved gold bracelets was on full display this year.  Most striking perhaps was the workmanship evident in its Extremely Lady timepiece that managed to replicate the scales of an exotic creature.  A python perhaps?   Its softly textured finish, uninterrupted from bracelet onto dial but for a diamond-set bezel, brought a splendid realism to the gold metal work.

“Engraving both the dial and the bracelet is for us an aesthetic signature that dates back to the 1960s,” said the Maison Piaget.  “The know-how of gold is a means of expression for Piaget, but this was a type of engraving that we had never attempted before.”

Two days of work by a master artisan were required to complete the décor of the timepiece, and to allow the Extremely Lady to take on reptilian airs and shimmer as it played with light and shadow.

At Cartier, abstractions of a Panthère For Cartier, the Panthère has since the 1980s been more of an ever-evolving notion than an “idée fixe.”  This year, Cartier has returned to its iconic feline with renewed creativity in number of models that explore its various iterations, from figurative forms to purely abstract notions.  The new Panthère de Cartier manchette this year has borrowed from the panther only what it held in seductively liquid languor.  It is all in the feline attitude which embodies, as the Maison Cartier puts it, “a celebratory, hedonistic and ultra-feminine spirit.”

If a jewelry watch can convey all that, then the new Panthère de Cartier manchette watch does that and more.  Its off-center dial is set off with a diamond-set bezel.  Its silky bracelet wraps around the wrist as softly as it did the gold slinky on which it was displayed in Cartier’s vitrine.  Its open-worked chain links reveal some skin, just enough to make the watch casually flirtatious, but always with elegance.

At HYT, the shape of sparkling water In 2017, HYT had shown an H0 with a strictly streamlined design.  This year, the H0 is back with a vengeance and something more… shall we say “eternal”?   “We are attracted to brilliant objects, because man is genetically programmed to find water and goes looking for things that sparkle under the sun,” said a spokesperson for HYT.   That pseudo-scientific explanation was enough to inspire HYT’s specialists to look for diamonds in the water, foretelling a bright new chapter in the brand’s fluidic development.

Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher born in 544 b.c., once said: “No man ever steps in the same river twice as it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.”  And this H0 is definitely not the same watch.  Under its domed sapphire glass, the new H0 paves its dial with 1,206 snow-set diamonds weighing at about 7.4 carats, visible from above and from all sides. Time display, HYT’s signature, remains unchanged, but in the H0’s diamond version, the liquid in the cylinder will flow in rivers of red or black. It is above all a reminder that time is both precious and fluid.

At Audemars Piguet, a river of sapphires runs through it Are those ripples on the icy waters of the Orbe as a pebble sinks in its bed? Or is it the orbital path of a far-away moon defying the gravitational pull of a fading sun?

Heraclitus would surely approve of the Sapphire Orbe, the newest jewelry extravagance by Audemars Piguet, named after the river that runs through Le Brassus, home to the Swiss watchmaker.

Sapphire Orbe is an otherworldly object rising from a glittering river of diamonds and sapphires in graded hues of blue and orange.  In the wake of Diamond Punk, Outrage and Fury, past jewelry watch creations, it may seem like a tamer creation, but it remains an equally sculptural expression of Audemars Piguet’s gem-setting know-how.  This piece is all about color and light, and the games they play when they come together.  It took some 1,050 hours to gem-set the piece with over 12,000 stones, each individually cut and set by hand.  In its domed center, a dark blue sapphire-set globe reveals the timepiece’s 18-carat white gold dial paved with graded orange sapphires.  The “ripples” - or “orbital rings” if you will - are snow-set with diamonds and sapphires in six graded shades of blue and orange, and in different diameters ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 mm.

The Sapphire Orbe’s caliber is quartz, but in jewelry circles, it is all about allure and rarely about movement.

Introducing – The New HYT Flow

HYT is an independent watchmaker like no other. With creations staging an offbeat dialogue between art and science, the brand has always been nimble and fast at innovation… from the very beginning and their core concept of displaying time with fluids. A few years ago, HYT had presented one of its most unexpected concepts, a batteryless LED-lit version of their H4. The concept now returns in a brand new, more elaborate version. Meet the HYT Flow.

Time became liquid with HYT. With Flow, it is visible both day and night, and on-demand. The new model is presented in an asymmetric 51mm steel case fitted with two crowns. The one at 2 o’clock is your standard crown for setting the time and winding the mechanical movement. The 4 o’clock crown is used to illuminate the watch. Triggered by a pusher, a miniaturized generator stores and dispels energy to activate LEDs. This “backlight” activator works without a battery, as it converts the mechanical energy stored in a barrel into electrical power. 

It is practical and even pretty fun to play with. But besides this prime utilitarian function, light is a defining part of the aesthetics and of the concept of the watch. Under the impressive sapphire crystal, fluids and electric light set the scene. The tri-dimensional metallic dial decor mimics light waves radiating from the lower crown while revealing part of the mechanism below. A ring of Superluminova underneath the capillary further enlightens the passage of time as it flows. The new HYT Flow comes in two variations. Uniting light-art and jewellery, the first one stages a dome made of 73 baguette diamonds creating surprising plays of reflections and refractions when illuminated. The second one is fitted with a tapered shape creating a never-ending vortex down to the mechanical movement.

Like all of the brand’s models, the HYT Flow stands out with its fluidic hour indication. A capillary contains two immiscible liquids working in opposition, one is coloured (indicating the time that has passed) and the other is translucent. Their meeting point is a meniscus, which indicates “the now”. When the coloured liquid reaches 6 o’clock, it flows back to its original position in retrograde motion. Besides driving this fluid display of the hours, its mechanical movement indicates more traditionally the minutes and the power reserve. Visible via the exhibition case back, it runs at 4hz and it can store 65 hours of power reserve.

In the unique movement, a hand-winding unit sets a consistent pace. This releases precisely the right amount of energy for two contrasting immiscible liquids to represent the recent Dast, the present and the near future. Visible through the see-through sapphire case back, an intricately shaped cam offers thirteen different possibilities to adjust and index the hour and minute indications, ensuring they operate as one. An over-sized, curved lever connects the movement ’s collaborating elements. This orchestrates a complex chain reaction. whereby the caliber pushes against a regulating bellow four times thinner than a human hair to launch time’s next twelve-hour journey.

Dynamism in detail

The new H5 variation by HYT combines an array of shades of prev — from anthracite on the hour ring and flange, to a pun-metal bridge — with dynamic colored accents. This punctuates the layered look and highlights the core message that each tiny element of the whole is vital to seamless dynamic performance. A sense of vibrancy is heightened by white Super- LumiNova ” under the blue liquid that shows elapsed time, and the neoralite hour ring.  HYT was born of a question. Time flows and only gains meaning through content. So why limit its measurement to indicating the now in splendid isolation, with needle-sharp hands or fleeting digital displays? Determined that its rebellion should make statements and waves, a multi-disciplinary think-tank set out to create timepieces that visibly connect the past.  or present and future. The HYT answer is a watch that overcomes the force of gravity to indicate the passage of time with liquids. Highly advanced technology took its cue from philosophy to mirror time’s intrinsic fluidity.

 The rest is history. To be precise, it’s history that began 3,4OO years ago with the Clepsydras or water clocks, of the Pharaohs. These so-called "water thieves" transported HCO from one container to another to measure elapsed or "stolen" time. This meaningful visualization of the transition of time seemingly disappeared until 2012, when HYT broke new scientific ground, inventing a wristwatch integrating a patented fluidic module. A colored liquid documents the recent past; a transparent fluid indicates the foreseeable future. Their meeting point is a meniscus, aka the now.

 Today HYT is an ecosystem that unites science, hi-technology, philosophy, art, and design. Based in Neuchatel, at the heart of the traditional Swiss watch making region, a dedicated team of 43 individuals makes liquid time real-time. The H2O — offered in two different cases with two different-colored liquids for the fluidic timekeeping — has a much more streamlined and minimalist look than its predecessors; HYT describes the case shape as “resembling a smoothed stone that has weathered time to perfection.” The case — made of either black PVD-coated stainless steel or polished and satin-finished stainless steel — measures a rather voluminous 51 mm in diameter, which is typical for the brand’s timepieces. Both HYT H2O models are mounted on black rubber straps with folding buckles (in black PVD coated steel for the black case/green fluid model, in titanium for the silver case/blue fluid model), both are limited to only 25 pieces worldwide, and both are priced at $95,000.
