"City of the Dead" Museum: A Haunting Crossroads for New Orleans' History and Culture
Introduction to the Controversy Iberville Projects In the vibrant embrace of New Orleans, where jazz melodies dance on the breeze and Mardi Gras beads shimmer like confetti, looms a chilling question: where does respect for cultural heritage end and commercial exploitation begin? The ambitious “City of the Dead” museum, planned for the remnants of the demolished Iberville Public Housing…

SMART BOMB
The Completely Unnecessary News Analysis
By Christopher Smart
April 23, 2024
THONG BIKINIS — CHEEKS AHOY, RIO COMES TO ZION
Remember the “Girl from Ipanema?” In Brazil they've been wearing thong bikinis for quite a while now. You've seen the pictures, all those tanned butts up and down the beach. That's what you expect in Rio de Janeiro. Well Wilson, it's hard to believe but thong bikinis have come to the states — and even right here in Utah you see bare butts all over the place. Rio comes to Zion. Luckily the “Word of Wisdom” has nothing to say about thong bikinis. And we're not talkin' one here and there. Go to the park and take a gander at the young women sunning themselves. It's butts up. No Wilson, we don't know if there is a special butt-tanning lotion, but there could be a good business opportunity there. You could call it Cheeks Ahoy. Makes you wonder what young kids are going to think around the pool come summer. Hey mom, why is that lady's butt hanging out? Look away, Bobby. But mom, why does she have that thing in her butt crack? Bobby here's some money go get a candy bar and don't hurry. Butt-crack bikinis can be attractive — or not. Beautiful butts are in the eyes of the beholder. Speaking of which, there's trouble on the horizon. Hold on to your California baggies, soon men will be wearing thong bikinis. Yecht. You're right, Wilson, that's just wrong.
TIME TO KILL OFF THE HOMELESS
There are too many homeless people and it's high time we get rid of them. They're camping everywhere and using parks for restrooms and they drive real estate down. The U.S. Supreme Court soon will consider making homelessness illegal. The idea would be to ticket them and fine them and even jail them. HUD estimates there are some 650,000 homeless but the reality is closer to 1 million. Luckily there are some good ideas out there. One is to drive them like cattle to Canada. Another is to hire the Israelis and force them into the sea, kinda like Gaza. Or we could just send them all to Phoenix, Ariz. where they would soon burn up. But right now homelessness is legal following a ruling from the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals: “[T]he Cruel and Unusual Punishments Clause of the Eighth Amendment precludes the enforcement of a statute prohibiting sleeping outside against homeless individuals with no access to alternative shelter.” If the Supreme Court lets that ruling stand the whole country could look like San Francisco or New Delhi. Of course, about the time Ronald Reagan moved into the White House homeless people were hard to find. But what's the sense in talking about what causes homelessness when we can just outlaw it and send them to the Galapagos.
DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH
Salt Lake City's Rio Grande district is a miracle waiting to happen... and waiting and waiting and waiting. Walt Disney took a barren chunk of land in Souther California and turned it into a magic wonderland. Well image the magic makeover the mayor and city could could do for the Rio Grande district — once home to the homeless and an open-air drug market. You may be pleased to know there are brand new plans for the area just west of the historic Rio Grande Depot. It's going to be swell — even more sweller than the last plan that wasn't implemented. It'll be something like Bourbon Street in New Orleans sans the Bourbon and the beads. With a cost $5 billion it will be so cool as to be unbelievable. Many of the details are under wraps, but sources who wished to remain anonymous tell Smart Bomb that plans include coordinating transportation systems with a wild mouse connecting Front Runner to the light rail — people could jump off at Festival Street. OK, what is Festival Street? Much like Main Street U.S.A. at Disneyland, it will feature fun stuff for the whole family, like Mr. Toads bridal gowns, Bear County lingerie and Frontierland Gun Shop. But like it has been for decades, plans remain in flux. For updates check back in 2028. It's going to be so cooooool. Just wait.
Lost script — Alright that's going to do it for another fun-filled week here at Smart Bomb where we keep track of the room temperature at Trump's “hush-money” porn star trial so you don't have to. Fact is, it's just damn cold in there. But even with the AC on blast the former president keeps dozing off. His defense team is working feverishly to come up with ways to keep him awake, including putting chili powder in his Gucci loafers and Bengay in his Jockeys. Something burning? Here's an item from our “New Celebs”-file. “The Devil Wears Prada” and so does Caitlin Clark. At the presser where she announced signing with the Indiana Fever, the b-ball scoring phenom who was No. 1 in the WNBA draft, was outfitted by — you guessed it — Prada. She cut a stylish figure sporting a double white satin shirt and skirt with an embroidered rhinestone mesh top — the first basketball player to be dressed by the luxury label for draft night. Prada isn't paying her, but Nike is. Clark has reportedly signed a eight-year, 28 million dollar deal with the shoemaker. That should help make up for her $76,000 WNBA salary. Just imagine, five years ago she was a kid trying out for the Iowa women's basketball team. You're right Wilson, that's one heck of an education.
Well Wilson, swimsuit season is upon us. Soon there will be a lot of flesh on display. At the pool and the park young folks will be working on tans and the side-effect called skin cancer. Utah has the highest skin cancer rate in the nation. For real. But forget that for a minute and get the band to play a little something for our soon-to-be thong-wearing friends:
Tall and tan and young and lovely The girl from Ipanema goes walking And when she passes Each one she passes goes - ah When she walks, she's like a samba That swings so cool and sways so gentle That when she passes Each one she passes goes - ooh But I watch her so sadly How can I tell her I love her Yes I would give my heart gladly But each day, when she walks to the sea She looks straight ahead, not at me Tall and tan and young and lovely The girl from Ipanema goes walking And when she passes, I smile But she doesn't see She just doesn't see, she never sees me...
(Girl From Ipanema — Lyrics written in Portuguese by Vinicius de Moraes, 1962, with music by Antonio Carlos Jobin. English lyrics written by Norman Gimbel, 1963.)

Read the full article

Excerpt from this story from Inside Climate News:
About 31 Native Alaskan communities face imminent climate displacement from flooding and erosion, which could lead cultures to disappear and ways of life to transform, with four tribes already in the process of relocating from their quickly disappearing villages.
The Kivalina, Shishmaref, Shaktoolik and Newtok, along with coastal Louisiana tribes, are among the most at risk of displacement due to climate change. But their efforts to move, according to tribal leaders, have been impeded by a lack of federal programs to assist in their relocation.
While there is no specialized federal program to assist in relocation efforts, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Housing and Urban Development can help with specific projects like construction funding or affordable housing.
Native Alaskan villages often fail to qualify for FEMA programs because they lack approved disaster mitigation plans or have not been declared federal disaster areas, according to the Government Accountability Office. Many Native villages don’t qualify for relocation assistance from HUD because federal law does not recognize unincorporated Alaska Native villages in Alaska’s Unorganized Borough as eligible units of general local government. But the Unorganized Borough, which consists of those parts of the state that are not within any of its 19 organized boroughs, encompasses nearly half of Alaska’s land mass.
Five tribes from Alaska and Louisiana, including the Native Village of Kivalina, filed a complaint in 2020 with the United Nations that the U.S. government is violating their human rights by failing to address climate change impacts that are forcing their displacement, placing them at existential risk.
In addition to the need to relocate Alaska and Louisiana tribes, two federally recognized Florida tribes, the Seminole and Miccosukee tribes, are facing an uncertain future because of sea level rise. In Washington state, Quinault Indian Nation in Taholah Village has already drafted relocation plans.
On Louisiana’s Isle de Jean Charles, a rapidly sinking Native American community about 80 miles southwest of New Orleans, Hurricane Ida demolished the few remaining homes late in August, leaving many of its residents in limbo.

3! 16! 21! 29!
thank you, friend
3. rant. just do it
okay you are lucky and you will be getting a rant about why you should never trust celebrities/public figures who start charities.
today’s example: brad pitt’s ‘make it right’ foundation, which built homes in new orleans in 2007 after hurricane katrina. sounds good right? he certainly still gets praised for being a socially conscious celebrity, very progressive, yada yada yada.
except, the houses are falling apart, have mold, he financially fucked over a lot people and the foundation was sued in 2018 for having “built and sold substandard houses with “defective” materials that caused structural issues, electrical and plumbing malfunctions, and insufficient ventilation.” his response?
"We went into it incredibly naive," he told the New Orleans Times-Picayune newspaper in August 2015, on the occasion of the ten-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. "Just thinking we can build homes—how hard is that?—and not understanding forgivable loan structures and family financial counseling and getting the rights to lots and HUD grants and so on and so forth. So it's been a big learning curve."
know what would have prevented that, bradford? putting money into organizations that were ALREADY FUCKING DOING THAT RATHER THAN STARTING A VANITY PROJECT. anyways, as soon as a celebrity starts a charity, i am very suspicious because of shit like this. i can only imagine that there are some pretty nice tax breaks too. which reminds me, remember the panama papers????? like hi emma watson, ENJOYING YOUR TAX HAVEN?????
(all of the quotes are in this article from architectural digest, but it looks like there was just a washington post article about it too)
16. if you had to get a tattoo right now, what would you get and where?
answered
21. what’s a conspiracy you believe in?
see, the conspiracies that i believe in have generally actually been shown to be real. like the military dumping money into hollywood. whenever i see anything about the mcu having an anti-war message, i’m like, uh huh sure. the only reason they lost funding after a while was because the military decided to end the relationship. and it looks like they’re back on good terms again.
29. what quote or inspirational setting do you think is bs?
i’m not a fan of inspirational quotes in general because i find that they tend to get applied to everything all kinda slapdash and as a result, lose nuance.
ask me about myself, i guess

Day 31: Slice
November 19, 2037
Cinderella’s castle stands like something out of a fairy tale, all elegant towers and tapering spires. It’s an improbable shade of pastel, and up above it, in the sky, the clouds have begin to tinge the same impossible cotton candy pink.
All around them, the ground is littered with harbingers, dying or dead.
Jacob isn’t looking at the clouds. He’s looking at the rest of his team, gathered on the ground beneath a storybook castle. They’re battered and worn; Mayu’s Sandstorm looks like it’s listing to one side every time she moves, and acid has eaten straight through the boot of Ryota’s Sentinel. Jacob can see his foot in there, encased in the plugsuit, but that’s no protection at all.
“We clear?” says Iyawa. She lifts her head; Nova cuts an impressive figure, all hard lines and sharp angles. The face of the suit, indigo and purple, has a scratch straight down the visor.
“Got it, captain,” says Jacob, and the voices of his team echo the assent over the comms.
“HQ says we’ve got two minutes before the next wave’s incoming, and we’re looking at twice as many. Get in your places, people, and let's be ready for them when they get here.”
They don’t wait around; two minutes isn’t long. They peel off and take to the air, and Jacob scans the ground beneath them for the ridged white dome on the far edge of the park. The holo-vids that splash along the ride’s entrance aren’t running today, but the title is sleek and silver, in lettering five feet tall: Space Mountain.
Jacob shuts off the comms for a second, as they touch down at the base of it. “You think they’re gonna take the bait?”
It’s almost funny, to watch the hulking form of Nemesis pull off Xia’s guarded shrug. “Guess we’ll find out.”
They’re silent for a second or two, staring up toward the sky.
“How’s your arm?” she says, voice quieter – muffled, through the faceplate.
“Kinda rough,” says Jacob. He hesitates. “For real, I owe you. That, uh. Could’ve really sucked.”
“Pretty sure it did,” she says, and tilts her head toward the wreck of the plating on his forearm.
“They’ll patch me up when we get back,” says Jacob. “Wonders of modern technology, right?”
Xia makes a noncommittal noise. “Just stay on your feet. We’re gonna have enough clean up without picking up parts of you, too.”
“Yeah,” says Jacob, and ducks his head. “Sure thing.”
They hear the arrival above them – a burst of sound that shakes the world, chest-deep and all-encompassing. Jacob flips his comms back on, and he falls into position, the blade from the wrist of his good hand ready to go.
Their part early on isn’t hard; hold ground, try not to attract too much attention. Buy time for the harbingers to take the bait, and don’t be too showy about it.
It’s almost easy, after the last wave of the fight. With Nemesis at his back, anything feels possible. When he twists and weaves and dodges, she’s there to back him up. If one of the fast ones circles around her, too quick for those massive fists to grab hold of, Jacob angles Hurricane in and darts over to take care of the problem.
They move together effortlessly, an endless ebb and flow of destruction. Nemesis runs out of grenades, and Jacob has to swap out Hurricane’s blade to one of his spares, the primary eaten through with acidic gunk.
At long last, word comes over the comms: “They took the bait,” says Iyawa. “Sandstorm, Steelshot, move in.”
“On it,” says Mayu.
“We are on our way,” says Sasha.
“Hurricane, Nemesis,” says Iyawa. “Be ready to move. You're sweeping up the mess.”
“Born ready,” says Jacob.
“Don’t worry about us,” says Xia.
“Sentinel,” says Iyawa.
“Yeah, yeah,” says Ryota. “Look helpless. Can do.”
There’s a snicker on the comms. “He’s got that one down,” says Mayu.
“Hey,” says Ryota.
“Do not make enemies of the medic,” says Sasha. “Perhaps this is not a proverb, but I feel that it should be one.”
There’s a brief pause in the audio. Jacob cuts down a creature that looks like a sky whale with the neck of a giraffe, all in tones of toxic purple and rot black.
“Hey,” says Iyawa. “What’s the hold up?”
There’s no reply.
Iyawa says, “Mayu, god dammit, don’t you dare –”
Somewhere overhead, a sonic boom sounds, so deep it shakes the world to the very core. Another follows just after, and another.
Sasha says, “Mother of god.”
“Blitz,” says the controller at HQ, too late. “You have incoming.”
Mayu screams, and her comms cut out. Jacob jerks his head toward Xia, and Nemesis nods when she does. They don’t wait to clear the creatures they’re engaged with; they jet straight across the sky, over the happy kingdom, toward the waterfront.
“Sentinel,” says Sasha, into the comms, voice shaking. “We have need of a medic.”
Maybe he says more; the rest is lost in another barrage of sonic booms, and suddenly the early morning sky is dark with wings and eyes and shapes that shouldn’t exist in this world. Hurricane and Nemesis don’t engage; they twist through, and duck under. Jacob puts on more speed, and then more yet. The ground beneath him is a blur. He veers sideways and misses something the size of a small car, black and sinuous and almost entirely teeth.
Then he spots them, down on the ground: Steelshot and Sandstorm, on the banks of the Rivers of America. Behind them, the sign welcoming guests to the Pirates of the Caribbean stands with its skull and crossbones. Inside, past the empty ropes to cordon off crowds that aren’t here, the shape of a treasure chest looms in silhouette, larger than life.
None of that is important, though. The important thing is Sandstorm, lying prone on the ground, blood pooling underneath, the vitals on his HUD flashing critical. The important thing is Steelshot standing above her, crushing in harbinger skulls with massive metal fists.
The important thing is that Jacob is almost there.
He leans in harder, bearing down on the harbingers with his blade drawn – slashes at the first one, at the second, trying to cut himself a path.
He’s almost there. He’s so close that he gets a front row seat for it: something hulking and gelatinous and strange, the black lines of it entirely the wrong shape. It’s as big as a subway car, and its whole head unhinges when it opens its mouth, like a snake swallowing a bird. It yawns wide, and then wider; it seems to stretch.
The teeth come down over Steelshot’s head and shoulders. They bury into the armor at his waist. Jacob hears the squeal of them cutting into metal; over the comms, he hears Sasha give a strangled cry.
The creature bites down.
The metal gives, then tears, then pulls apart. Half of Sasha falls to the ground.
“Holy shit,” says Xia.
Sasha starts to scream.
Jacob makes a sound. It’s a quiet sound. Maybe the comms don’t even pick it up.
He shoulders through – cuts and tears, twists and dodges, a constant flurry of motion. The screaming stops, over the comms; the creature’s throat works, with visible effort.
Then it dips down toward the ground, mouth gaping open to snap up the legs.
Jacob doesn’t stop to think. He only moves – throws himself into its path. He rams his blade up through the roof of its mouth, and he drags it out, and then Xia’s beside him, grabbing the thing with Nemesis’ fists and hurling it bodily to one side.
“Shit,” says Ryota, over the comms, and Jacob glances up to see that Nova and Sentinel are on the scene. “Shit, move, cover me, I –”
“Are they,” says Iyawa, and Ryota says, “Mayu has a chance.”
Iyawa makes a choked, strangled sound over the comms.
Jacob registers Nova charging up, from the corner of his vision – light and heat – and then a force blast rocks the area. The waterfront of the Rivers of America caves in, sloughing off into the water.
Sentinel crouches over Sandstorm, down on the ground. The puddle of blood is huge.
Jacob can’t watch them, though; the sky is full of wings and teeth and eyes. The black has blotted out the dawn.
“We have to get her out of here,” Ryota’s saying. “She needs a hospital, she needs –”
Beside him, Nemesis is like a force of nature, pulverizing everything Xia comes into contact with.
Beyond her, Nova takes out a swath of harbingers at least twenty deep. The blast caves in the Mark Twain, its pristine white walls crumpling under the force.
Jacob twists, and turns, and takes down everything he can reach. He slices the wings off of one creature, and it crashes to the ground. Hurricane darts between the monsters that choke out the sky, fast as its namesake and twice as deadly.
There behind the metal faceplate, Jacob’s face is wet.
“Blitz,” cuts in the controller from HQ. “Clear the area. Do you copy? You have incoming in three minutes. Do not try to hold your location.”
Nova’s force blast puts out the windows of the quaint New Orleans style buildings all along the waterfront. “God dammit,” says Iyawa. “God dammit!” Her breathing is ragged, over the comms.
“Iyawa –” says Ryota.
“Do you copy?” says the controller at HQ. “Fall back to Tokyo.”
“I copy,” says Iyawa.
Nova seems to straighten – turns toward them, hovering in the air above the dock. “Hurricane, clear a path. Nemesis, you're on tank duty. Sentinel –”
“Already ahead of you,” says Ryota, scooping up the battered shell of Sandstorm in his arms.
“Three minutes,” says Iyawa. “We need to be out of here, people.”
There’s no time to reply. There’s no time to do anything but move – dart out and ahead, into the roiling mass of harbingers, to try and carve them a retreat.
Behind him, what remains of his team follows in his wake.
Up overhead, barely visible through the mass of writhing bodies, the sun has risen.

10 Years of Cloverfield: Part Two
By Jay Truant
I love monster movies. When I was a wee prehumous lad, my dad spent many weekend afternoons introducing me to classic monster movies such as Toho’s Godzilla series, King Kong, The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, Them! and many more. My fascination with giant city-destroying monsters developed quickly and would follow me into adulthood – so when I saw the first teaser trailer for the JJ Abrams-produced found footage monster flick Cloverfield, I was all in. I followed the movie’s Alternate Reality Game (ARG), bought a Slusho t-shirt and even took the day off of work to catch the earliest showing of the film on 1-18-08. I was excited by Abrams’ desire to make the Cloverfield monster America’s equivalent of Japan’s Godzilla, and patiently awaited further sequels. As it would turn out, it would be nearly a decade before a sequel arrived in theaters – and once it had, it completely defied any and every expectation that fans had for it.
Cloverfield was a huge success for Paramount Pictures and producer JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions. On a production budget of $25 million, the film quickly turned a profit during its opening weekend, debuting in 3,411 theaters with a final weekend gross of $40 million. Rumors that Paramount were eager to push a sequel into development were the talk of the Internet that Monday morning, and director Matt Reeves addressed the possibility of a follow-up in an interview with Coming Soon:
There’s a moment on the Brooklyn Bridge, and there was a guy filming something on the side of the bridge, and Hud sees him filming and he turns over and he sees the ship that’s been capsized and sees the headless Statue of Liberty, and then he turns back and this guy’s briefly filming him. In my mind that was two movies intersecting for a brief moment, and I thought there was something interesting in the idea that this incident happened and there are so many different points of view, and there are several different movies at least happening that evening and we just saw one piece of another.
Over the next eight years, Reeves and Abrams would discuss the sequel in interviews, despite Abrams’ confirmation of the monster’s death at the end of the original film in an interview with Rolling Stone. In January 2016, Cloverfield fans would have their patience rewarded when a surprise trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane debuted ahead of Michael Bay’s 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.
10 Cloverfield Lane was conceived as its own original story independent of the Cloverfield universe in a spec script by Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken titled The Cellar. In 2012, the script was sold to Paramount Pictures and earned a spot on the Tracking Board’s year-end hit list.
In the script, a young woman named Michelle wakes up in an underground bomb shelter with a man named Howard who claims to have rescued her from a nuclear attack that has rendered the air outside the shelter contaminated. Howard’s claims are backed up by Nate, who arrives at the shelter in a hazmat suit and quickly forms a bond with Michelle. Throughout the script, Howard and Nate’s credibility is repeatedly called into question and the reader is left to wonder if an apocalyptic event has truly taken place, or if Michelle has been the victim of an elaborate kidnapping.
Paramount hired Bad Robot to develop The Cellar for their fledgling Insurge Pictures division. Based on Paramount’s success with 2009′s found footage horror flick Paranormal Activity, Insurge was created to focus on the development of micro-budget films. Whiplash director Damien Chazelle was hired to further develop the script, and Dan Trachtenberg signed on to make his feature directorial debut. Chazelle made several updates to the script which included further development of the film’s characters. The character of Nate was changed to Emmett, and retained none of the sinister qualities he possessed in the original spec script. Howard subsequently became a more cagey and volatile character, while Michelle is much stronger-willed than she appears in the script.
During the film’s production, producer JJ Abrams began to feel a kinship between Trachtenberg’s contained science fiction thriller and the original Cloverfield. In interviews, Abrams explained that while 10 Cloverfield Lane wasn’t a direct sequel to Cloverfield, it was a ‘blood relative’, stating that the series would take on an anthology approach similar to Black Mirror and The Twilight Zone where each film would be connected in tone only.
“The spirit of it, the genre of it, the heart of it, the fear factor, the comedy factor, the weirdness factor — there were so many elements that felt like the DNA of this story were of the same place that Cloverfield was born out of. It just became clear that as we were working on the movie, this could be something that is not the sequel that anyone might expect. It’s not the continuation of the story that people might think of, but it was so clearly associated.”
–JJ Abrams, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
A large portion of the success of the original Cloverfield can be attributed to the film’s innovative viral marketing campaign. In-game websites such as the now defunct 1-18-08.com and Slusho.jp (temporarily down) were initially discovered by fans who obsessively analyzed the film’s teaser trailer looking for potential clues that would help them understand the nature of the film’s monster. The teaser for 10 Cloverfield Lane was similarly picked apart upon arrival, though fans would have to endure a certain degree of misdirection before the official ARG started.
At one point in the teaser, the film’s characters can be seen drinking Swamp Pop, a Louisiana-based soft drink. Fans immediately began scouring Swamp Pop’s official website for clues, believing the cola to be 10 Cloverfield Lane’s equivalent of the fictional Slusho that appeared in the original film. Swamp Pop, however, is a very real product that can be purchased in stores and was likely featured in the film to pinpoint the story’s regional location. This didn’t stop the company from having a bit of fun with fans, however, as their online store offered a “long-term shelter supply” for a brief period of time.
Fans also began investigating Tagruato’s website for potential updates that would point them in the direction of the film’s ARG. Several fans began e-mailing Tagruato with in-game questions, hoping to illicit a reply from the fictional Japanese mining company that played a key role in the Cloverfield ARG. While this tactic initially seemed far-fetched, fans would eventually begin receiving replies from Vanessa Gwon, Tagruato’s employee of the month for January 2016. This would lead to the discovery of Tagruato’s “Employee of the Month” page, which featured a picture of John Goodman as Howard Stambler. Howard is listed on the page as a Telemetry Analyst for Tagruato’s subsidiary company Bold Futura whose work had resulted in a significant breakthrough diagnosing transmission complications with two of Tagruato’s governmental clients’ orbiting satellites. Fans also noticed that he was wearing a shirt containing the phrase “Radioman70″. Visiting radioman70.com redirected fans to FunandPrettyThings.com, the first and only original website of the 10 Cloverfield Lane ARG.
The homepage of FAPT features a number of images that directly reference the film’s teaser trailer. One of those images is a screenshot from Pretty in Pink that prompts the entry of a passphrase when clicked upon. Entering the phrase “Do you want to talk?” leads to a message board with posts from Howard Stambler.
The first post on FAPT’s message board is used to set up the premise of the film’s ARG: Howard Stambler is posting these messages for his daughter Megan to warn her of an impending danger, and instructing her to get to his underground shelter as quickly as possible. Towards the end of his message, Howard insinuates that Megan’s mother has been keeping her from him, potentially due to her belief that Howard is mentally unstable. Further updates from Howard would reference his disdain for Megan’s mother, as well as his longing to reconnect with his estranged daughter.
Fans soon discovered another page on FAPT titled Life Preserving Information”. The page featured a survival guide that Howard put together for Megan, complete with tips on how to put together a bug-out bag or hot-wire a car. Howard also provided links to other (real) survival websites and included widgets that provided weather updates and train schedules. Subsequent updates featured a link to a real news article about a train track fire in New Orleans.
Similar to the original Cloverfield ARG, FAPT also provided fans with some background information on Howard. In one of Howard’s message board posts, he mentions that he used work with spy satellites. He references a discovery that he and his team made while in space and explains that the government is now trying to cover it up. Howard also mentions that he worked on Seasat, the first Earth-orbiting satellite designed for remote sensing of the Earth’s oceans. Conspiracy theorists believe that the military shut down Seasat when they discovered it could also be used to track submarines, using a short circuit as a covering story. Finally, Howard explains that his mentor was accused of spying and sent to prison for 365 years. It is assumed that Howard’s mentor was a real life Navy Radioman named Jerry Whitworth, a member of the Walker Spy Ring who was sentenced to 365 years for selling secret information to the Soviets.
Howard also designed a text-based survival simulation game for Megan to help her practice surviving inside of the bunker. Fans were able to interact with the game, and could even post their high scores. One user was able to pass 1,000 days inside the bunker, and was rewarded with a secret message from Howard revealing the location of a dead drop in Chicago. Reddit user helveticatt went to the locker at the HI Chicago hostel and found a Paris bag containing a cellphone. The phone had one voicemail, which was a message from Howard to Megan:
“Megan, as promised - a phone just for you and me to talk. Keep it hidden so your mother doesn’t ruin this too. I put my number into your contacts. Call me as soon as you can. I need to hear your voice, and I gotta get you out of Chicago before everything happens. Your life is in real danger, Radiogirl. But I promise to keep you safe. Call me please. Love, dad.”
After the discovery of the dead drop, FAPT continued to be updated regularly. In one message board post, Howard made reference to his estranged wife Denise selling their family heirlooms. Fans quickly found a listing from Denise on Craigslist that contained a picture of the heirlooms with one of Megan’s school notebooks visible to the side of it. Fans e-mailed Denise to ask about her husband, and her replies relayed frightening stories of Howard’s “extreme prepping” and suggested that something terrible may have happened to Megan:
Howard was always worried about emergencies. I used to think it was just how he’d learned to see the world from when he was in the Navy. But things got so much worse when he started working at Bold Futura. He used to come home at night and sit through dinner without saying a word. He became obsessed with building his fallout shelter, putting all our money into it. I didn’t even think he’d mind too much when we left. That way he could keep building his bunker without anybody to get in his way. But reading everything you’ve shown me on this site. I can see that it’s just made him more obsessed. This is not the first time he’s done this. Every few years there’s some new danger that’s going to kill us all. But the disaster never happens. And then he just finds something else to obsess about. During one of his panics, he made us hide in the cellar. Megan must have been about 11, and she wouldn’t stop asking him why we were hiding. So he put his hand over her mouth to keep her quiet, and kept it there so long that she couldn’t breathe. That was the moment I knew that I needed to get us away from him. Maybe if I’d realized it sooner, things wouldn’t have turned out so badly.
The last update on FAPT came from a message board posting by Nikolia Roza, a fellow employee of Bold Futura. Linked in the message is a strange audio file, which starts out as haunting music, but appears to contain some sort of encoded message. Playing the audio file, while running a decoder program, generated an image of one of the alien spaceships from the film approaching the earth.
The trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane would return to theaters ahead Deadpool. Depending on which theater fans attended, a brief image would quickly flash at the end of the trailer, containing random numbers. By combining the numbers featured on each of the five images, fans were given geographical coordinates to a second dead drop.
Reddit user MugensKeeper discovered the dead drop, which contained survival gear, dry food, a puzzle piece and a USB drive. The USB drive was loaded with an audio file that contained a recording of a Mission Control conversation concerning a large burst of unexplained magnetic energy. At the end of the conversation, they are instructed to cover up the incident.
Shortly after the discovery of the second dead drop, the outgoing message on Howard’s cellphone was changed:
This phone belongs to my daughter. I don’t know how you got it, but it doesn’t matter much anyways. It’s happening… and, I wish everyone just listened to me. I could have helped you all if you just listened.
Howard also texted Megan’s phone, instructing her to delete all the messages in her voicemail box so he could leave her a new message. The final message from Howard arrived a few days later:
“It’s my fault, I see that now. Now it’s too late for you to leave Chicago. I was never going to see you again. You were my little girl, and it was my job to protect you. I failed. I’m going to make it up to you, I know how to make it right, I promise.”
10 Cloverfield Lane yielded another success for Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot Productions. The film was met with critical and commercial acclaim, earning a 90% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and $110 million at the worldwide box office. Some fans, however, felt as though the movie was marketed under false pretenses; at the end of a TV spot that aired during the Super Bowl, a clear variation of the Cloverfield monster’s roar can be heard, leading them to believe that this movie would be a direct follow-up to the original This roar would make its way into the film as one layer of the sound the alien spaceship makes after its blown up by Michelle. Despite their disappointment, these fans nonetheless admitted to enjoying the film as a standalone movie, praising the performances of John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher Jr.
After the release of 10 Cloverfield Lane, Paramount and Bad Robot announced that they would be adapting a screenplay from writers Doug Jung and Oren Uziel called God Particle with Julius Onah set to direct. The synopsis of the film described a crew aboard a space station finding itself alone after a scientific experiment caused the Earth to disappear. Fans immediately began speculating that the audio file contained in Howard’s dead drop was a reference to the crew and station set to appear in God Particle. A leaked synopsis from the online survey website Swagbucks also made reference to an alien attack, leading many to believe that the next film in the Cloverfield franchise would be a direct follow-up to 10 Cloverfield Lane. As they would discover two years later, the next film in the series wouldn’t be quite so easy to figure out.

Over the last few years, I’ve been posting links to stories about Louisiana’s Isle de Jean Charles, which has been the home of the Isle de Jean Charles Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw Tribe. The island is slowly being inundated by rising ocean levels, land subsidence (attributable in part to oil drilling), and erosion from storms, including hurricanes. As more coastal communities, including those occupied by Native Americans, are lost to the effects of climate change, this story tells us that our federal government and maybe state governments aren’t prepared to do the right thing for the affected people, including Native Americans.
Excerpt from this story from DeSmog Blog:
The Isle de Jean Charles, the historic homeland of the IDJC Tribe, is a shrinking island about 80 miles southwest of New Orleans, in Louisiana’s wetlands at the edge of the Gulf of Mexico. The island community is one of a growing number of coastal communities worldwide that will inevitably have to relocate due to the impacts of climate change.
Since 1955, the island has lost 98 percent of its area due to a combination of levee construction, coastal erosion, sinking land, rising seas, and damage from hurricanes worsened by climate change. Only a 320-acre strip remains today.
The estimated 19 families that remain on the island are connected to the mainland by the single Island Road, which floods frequently and is at risk of washing away altogether during extreme weather. Louisiana, which has rebuilt the road in the past, has warned it likely won’t again, which would leave the island accessible only by boat.
Albert Naquin, Chief of the Isle de Jean Charles Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw Tribe (IDJC), often loses sleep over his tribe’s fate as its historic island homeland continues to lose land at an alarming rate. His dream to relocate the tribe from Isle de Jean Charles with a federal grant has turned into a nightmare.
After helping the Louisiana Office of Community Development (OCD) win a $98 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Tribe no longer wants to be associated with the State’s project, which included $48 million earmarked to relocate the IDJC Tribe.
“The state hijacked the money, and now the tribe is back at square one,” Naquin explained in January after the OCD announced the purchase of 515 acres of land for the resettlement project in Schriever, Louisiana, 40 miles north of the island. He suggested that the State return the money to the federal government because the OCD’s plans did not reflect the goals and objectives the Tribe outlined in its application for the National Disaster Resilience Competition grant in the first place.
After Naquin’s rebuke of the State’s handling of the grant, OCD Director Pat Forbes said he still welcomed Naquin’s participation in the project, and in January met with him and other local officials to bridge the rift. Following the meeting, Naquin sent Forbes a list of the Tribe’s desired changes to the OCD plan, but the State rejected all of the requests.

"there's an org in the US that does this too"
You mean like the National Alliance to End Homelessness and HUD? Housing First is a US invention dating back to the 80s. It's being implemented in major cities including LA (the ones who first did the program), NYC, DC, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Philadelphia.
The problem isn't that nobody wants to help: it's that Housing First and food stamps, and honestly any kind of government-administered welfare strikes many Americans as patently unfair because there's this idea that everyone can pull themselves up by their bootstraps, never mind whether they even have boots, and have a two bedroom house and make a six figure salary. All they have to do is work hard and really want it. So people won't support these initiatives because they want to know why this guy gets a break, even though it's been proven to be cheaper to give someone a house than have them use the ER once or twice a month. It sucks.

COMMENTARY: After 51 Years, Fair Housing Still an Unfinished Journey
“How do we ensure that future generations of all backgrounds live in neighborhoods rich with opportunity?” said Debby Goldberg, Vice President of Housing Policy and Special Project with the National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA). “Fair housing. Fair housing can ultimately dismantle the housing discrimination and segregation that caused these inequities in the first place.” (Photo: iStockphoto / NNPA)

Fifty-one years ago, this month, the Fair Housing Act (the Act) was enacted to ensure that housing discrimination was illegal. Yet, just days before the annual observance of Fair Housing Month began, headline news articles reminded the nation that housing discrimination still exists.
For example, on March 19, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) fined Citibank $25 million for violations related to mortgage lending. At issue was Citibank’s “relationship pricing” program that afforded mortgage applicants either a credit on closing costs or a reduced interest rate. These cost breaks were intended to be offered to customers on the basis of their deposits and investment balances. According to OCC examination at Citibank, these ‘relationships” did not include all eligible customers – particularly people of color. The regulator’s conclusion was that the bank’s practices led to racial disparities.
The settlement calls for all 24,000 consumers affected to receive $24 million in restitution.
Days later on March 28, the federal department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) charged Facebook with violating the Act by enabling its advertisers to discriminate on its social media platform. According to the lawsuit, Facebook enabled advertisers to exclude people based on their neighborhood – a high tech version of the historical redlining of neighborhoods where people of color lived.
With 210 million Facebook users in the United States and Canada alone, the social media mogul took in $8.246 billion in advertising in just the last financial quarter of 2018.
As April’s annual observance of Fair Housing Month began, the Chair of the House Financial Services Committee used that leadership post to bring attention to the nagging challenges that deny fair housing for all. In her opening statement at the hearing held April 2, Chairwoman Maxine Waters set the tone and focus of the public forum.
“According to the National Fair Housing Alliance, individuals filed 28,843 housing discrimination complaints in 2017,” said Waters. “Under the Trump Administration, fair housing protections are under attack…. According to news reports Secretary Carson proposed taking the words ‘free from discrimination’ out of HUD’s mission statement.”
“He also reportedly halted fair housing investigations”, continued Waters, “and sidelined top advisors in HUD’s Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity. These are unprecedented attacks on fair housing that must not go unanswered.”
Several committee members posed similar concerns and offered comments that echoed those of Waters. Additional issues raised during the hearing spoke to a lack of enforcement, data collection, gentrification, racial redlining, restrictive zoning, and disparate impact.
A panel of housing experts provided substantive testimony that responded to many of these issues, while also acknowledging how many fair housing goals have not yet been achieved.
Cashauna Hill, the Executive Director of the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center provided additional information on delays encountered with HUD’s Fair Housing investigations. Although HUD set a standard for these complaints to be investigated within 100 days, many complaints go well beyond the agency’s own guidelines. Cases older than 100 days are categorized as “aged” in HUD parlance.
“In 2017, HUD had 895 cases that became aged during that same year, and it had 941 cases that were already considered aged at the beginning of the fiscal year,” noted Hill. “During that same time period, Fair Housing Assistance Program agencies had 3,994 cases that became aged and 1,393 cases that were already considered aged at the beginning of the fiscal year.”
“Practically, what this means for groups like the Fair Housing Action Center,” continued Hall, “is a delay in making victims of discrimination whole, and a delay in correction of housing providers’ discriminatory behavior.”
Speaking on behalf of the Zillow Group, Dr. Skylar Olsen, its Director of Economic Research cited additional data that underscored racial disparities and problems that continue with access to credit.
“Homeownership is a key tool for building wealth, and more than half the overall wealth held by American households is represented by their primary residence,” said Olsen. “But access to homeownership is not shared equally. In 1900, the gap between black and white homeownership rate was 27.6 percentage points. Today it is 30.3 percentage points.”
Further according to Olsen, the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) shows that “black borrowers are denied for conventional home loans 2.5 times more often than white borrowers.”
Even among renters, Skylar noted racial disparities in major metro areas like Atlanta, Detroit, Houston and Oakland, California adding, “local establishments and amenities including banks, health institutions and recreational facilities are less prevalent in communities of color than white communities.”
Debby Goldberg, Vice President of Housing Policy and Special Project with the National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA) was also a panelist.
“Not all neighborhoods were created the same,” testified Goldberg. “The long history of housing discrimination and segregation in the U.S. has created neighborhoods that are unequal in their access to opportunities. They are not unequal because of the people who live there. They are unequal because of a series of public and private institutionalized practices that orchestrated a system of American apartheid in our neighborhoods and communities, placing us in separate and unequal spaces.”
Goldberg also stated that racial discrimination included consumers of color with varying incomes.
“While many low-income communities, no matter their racial composition, suffer from disinvestment and lack of resources, even wealthier, high-earning communities of color have fewer bank branches, grocery stores, healthy environments, and affordable credit than poorer white areas.”
Ms. Goldberg also posed a core question that was as basic as it was direct.
“How do we ensure that future generations of all backgrounds live in neighborhoods rich with opportunity?” said Goldberg. “Fair housing. Fair housing can ultimately dismantle the housing discrimination and segregation that caused these inequities in the first place.”
