How to restore factory settings for Huawei ONTs?

Recently many friends asked me how to restore the factory setting for Huawei ONTs, here I list the steps of restoring ONTs, use either of the following methods to restore factory settings for an ONT:

1, Choose System Tools > Restore Default Configuration from the main menu on the web page and click Restore Default Configuration.

2, Hold down the RESET button for a long period of time (longer than 10s) to restart the ONT with factory settings.

Compatibility of Different Brands OLT and ONU

Nowadays, there are many different brands of OLT and ONU in the market, such as Huawei, ZTE, Fiberhome, Baudcom, and many other brands. If you only have OLT or ONU, but want to use it with ONU or OLT, will you still choose the brand you use? If you have OLT or ONU in hand, but you bought ONU or OLT of different brands, are they compatible? This article tells you the answers to these questions.

Compatibility of Different Brands OLT and ONU

The manufacturing technology of OLT and ONU has evolved as a result of the ongoing reform of human technology. The goods’ manufacturing specifications are nearly identical. OLTs are developed based on a standard protocol and can be interconnected. But why are some big brands of OLTs not compatible with other brands of ONUs? This is because they do not completely follow the standard protocol, or in other words, they add some protocols in the production of OLT to limit the compatibility of their own brand of OLT with other brands of ONUs, which is also an action to protect their own interests.

Generally speaking, ONUs are not compatible with OLTs, many of which are incompatible due to restrictions imposed on OLTs. Why do people not choose the same brand of ONU adapter after buying the famous OLT? The main reason is that the price of OLT is already very expensive. If you continue to buy ONUs of the same brand, the budget will be very high. If you choose other brands of ONU, you can greatly reduce the cost. Of course, this also depends on the ONU being compatible with the purchased OLT.

What is OLT?

In passive optical networks, OLTs, also known as Optical Line Terminals, serve as endpoint hardware devices. The main role of the OLT is to convert electrical signals used by service provider equipment to optical fiber signals used by passive optical networks (PON) and to coordinate multiplexing between end user equipment (ONU or ONT). In a typical communication network, it serves as a switch or router. It is both the external network’s and the internal network’s entry point.

OLT Functions

Traffic scheduling, user-oriented passive optical network interface, buffer control, and bandwidth allocation are the most significant features of the OLT. In a summary, the OLT provides the following functions: In the upstream channel, the OLT connects to the PON network and translates the fiber service (FiOS) standard signals into the PON system’s frequencies and frames. In the downstream channel, the OLT sends collected data over the ODN network and distributes it to all ONU user terminal devices, as well as coordinating numerous analog or digital signals created by ONT conversion devices into a single signal.

What is ONU?

ONU stands for Optical Network Unit, and it is split into two types, active optical network units and passive optical network units. In an optical access network, an ONU is a device that provides users with a number of service interfaces. The ONU’s network interface is an optical interface. It’s the electrical interface on the user’s end. An optical node is a device that has an uplink optical transmitter, an optical receiver, and a multi-bridge amplifier network monitoring device. Between the OLT and the ONU, optical fibers and splitters are used to distribute the optical fiber network. The OLT is connected to the ONU by a single fiber, and the OLT is connected to the ONU via the PON. The ONU supports the “triple play” concept by providing telephony services, data, and IPTV.

ONU Functions

Data, IPTV, VOIP, and other services are all available through ONU’s Triple Play Service. The broadcast data transmitted by the OLT is received by the ONU. The ONU gathers and holds the Ethernet data that the user wants to transmit, then sends it to the OLT according to the sending window that the user has been assigned. OAM supports ONU’s extensive remote management features.

Repeated Ring on SIP Client due to MxU system parameter setting in MA5620 when NOTIFY is received on the SIP CLIENT

SIP User on MDU get a call and it is automatically disconnected

Capture on ONT show a similar NOTIFY message on ONT but Huawei ONT did not respond

Handling Process

1. check the MWI parameter on both the device (ONT Huawei HG8245A and MDU)

2ONT (Huawei HG8546M) profile body parameter for MWI is 

6=0 which means disabled

3. MDU system parameter 3 = 1

When parameter name is 3, it indicates the mode of the message waiting indicator. The range for parameter value is 0-2.

§  0: high voltage.

§  1: FSK and ringing.

§  2 FSK with no ringing.

§  Default: 1

4. change the parameter 3 = 2 so that there is no ringing on receiving the NOTIFY message

Root Cause

MDU by default send FSK and Ringing on getting MWI packet that is NOTIFY message

MDU system parameter 3 = 1

When parameter name is 3, it indicates the mode of the message waiting indicator. The range for parameter value is 0-2.

Solution

Change the system parameter 3 on mdu

change the parameter 3 = 2 so that there is no ringing on receiving the NOTIFY message.

HG850a PPPoE connection failed due to VAS profile mismatch on BMS

Customer find that, when HG850a works under Router mode, PPPoE can not be connected, while under Bridge mode it is OK. Upgrade the HG850a to the latest version, problem still exist. HG850a version: V100R001C07SPC008 Huawei OLT  version: V800R007C00SPC300 BMS version: V200R012C05SPC135

Handling Process

1.Since it is OK under bridge mode, it means the config of BRAS is OK, problem should be on the OLT or Huawei ONT. 2.Set the ONT as Router and Bridge mode separately, and capure the trace on the uplink of OLT. Under bridge mode, PADI packet is captured; but under Router mode, there is no any PADI packet, it means HG850a did not send the PADI packet under Router mode, which casued PPPoE can not establish.  3.Check the config file of OLT and HG850a, no fault is found. For further analysis, check the HG850a WAN status by the OLT internal channel: 59-PERM-TEST-O3(su)%%                      an0   576 root        416 S   dhcpc -i wan0 -I wan0   577 root        416 S   dhcpc -i wan0 -I wan0   757 root        616 S   dhcps There is only one DHCP��WAN,  but no PPPoE WAN, but on the WEB interface we can see there are 2 WAN: one is DHCP, the other is PPPoE WAN. 4. It is very strange, we dicided to check the XML file more carefully, and found the two WAN ports were using the same WAN ID, both are "1" : On the BMS, we can see that more clearly: As the second WAN ID the same as the first one, the second WAN port(PPPoE) can not start. As a result, PPPoE can not be established. 5. Change the XML manually, to make the WAN ID different. After that,  PPPoE can be established under Router mode too. 6. But problem can not be closed here, need to know how can the 2 WAN ports get the same WAN ID. Customer did not set it, and  there is no where to set the WAN ID on ONT (HG8546M), OLT (MA5683T)or BMS. 7. Take a review of the customer's service-providing process, find that cusotmer bind one VAS profile to generate the XML file, the VAS profile is from other BMS, did not match the customer's BMS, can not understand  all the HG850a nodes, and the same 2 WAN ID appears.  8. Till now the problem is clear and located, VAS profile mismatch BMS, lead to the same 2 WAN ID, and then lead to the second WAN can not be started, and cause the PPPoE can not be established. So, the final solution is to create one VAS profile on BMS manually, the parameter can be the same as before, and then bind the new VAS profile to the ONT, problem can be solved. PS. You can find the following in the attachment: configrations of OLT and ONT, network scheme, trace of OLT uplink.

As the same ip (10.22.2.10) was used on OLT for service testing caused VoIP Sip Phone connection is not properly working with ONT HG865

Issue Description

Customer complain that one phone user connected with ONT HG865 always hear busy tone. if anyone call him he also hear busy tone insteed of Ringback Tone. when reset the ONT, dial tone stable only for 1 min and again busy tone come. Huawei OLT version is MA5600V800R006C02.

1. Checked the Phone set. 2. Checke d the connection with ONT (Huawei HG8546M). 3. Checked the Hardware ONT. 4. Checked the configuration of ONT. 5. Checked the Optical power at ONT end. 6. Checked the GPBC PON port at OLT. 7. checked the configuration of Sip connection.  8. checked the  configuration at SoftSwitch. 9. Checked detail configuration of OLT (Huawei MA5683T).

Suggestions

Need to take care after testing the service at the time of Acceptance testing , please delete all the unnecessary IPs and configurations to avoid future conflict.
