It’s with this that the mood in the room finally turns serious, a chill crawling up his spine as his eyes lock with Ink’s. He swallows. “I think your theory’s the same as mine.” Ink nods. Dream completes the thought for them both, speaking the name they’ve avoided ever since they locked it away: “HATE.” The name echoes in the room, the chill in his spine turning into a full shudder as the name settles around them, pressing down on their shoulders as if someone else was watching them. It wasn’t possible—they were the only ones left in the room—but still. It felt like someone was listening, and each of them stayed silent as they thought about what this meant.

CHAPTER FOUR IS LIVE!!!

*looks at the amount of time between this update and the last one* ...you knows what? Let's all ignore that. I'm back now, hopefully for good, so it doesn't really matter. Besides, it's not like I didn't warn you already that my updates are inconsistent. Even if I still didn't mean more than a year's wait...

I got blocked a bit on how to progress the story. And then some of it unblocked, but the other half--the one that I needed to figure out, still remained blocked and it wasn't until recently (this week) that I managed to figure it out. There's still a few things I'm unhappy with, but I've decided to just get the chapter over and done with, which is why you're getting it now. I still have to rework the next few chapters, but that should be easier given the future stuff I've figured out. Heck, I've even started writing one of the future chapters, and I hope to continue along like that if I don't know what to do with the sooner ones.

So, don't expect another chapter too soon. Maybe next month. Who knows.

But! As I said, I am back now! With a lovely chapter that lets us take a peek at the other side of things!

Lockheed Martin’s SR-72, known as “Son of Blackbird,” is reportedly set to have its maiden flight in 2025.

The uncrewed hypersonic aircraft, believed to be a top-secret project for the U.S. Air Force, aims to reach speeds over 4,000 mph (6,437 kph), making it the fastest plane ever developed.

Designed as the successor to the SR-71 “Blackbird,” the SR-72 is expected to be unmanned, hypersonic, and reusable, primarily serving intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions, while supporting Lockheed Martin’s High-Speed Strike Weapon (HSSW).

I might have had something of a minor breakthrough.

I don't know if you necessarily understand all of the theory I'm working with here or the personal background I'm drawing off so I'll be as plain as I can. If I can, while still being concise)

Okay. 1st step multiverse theory, not so much sciencey "many worlds" (every choice creates a branch) but more theological/arcane/uh..High-path /ritual/theory -especially- making use of the retrocasting problem I've been working on. Like. "<I had once will have created>" a separate time-line (or maybe I planned the whole thing Idk) but in this timeline some arbitrary change was made to put me on the low-path here in this reality you and I currently occupy.

Step 2. Blending

The base reality I used to know definitely included marrying my hssw and siring some kids and a president Hilary Clinton nuclear winter. I don't remember a heck of a lot more than that. My son was a brat and my little daughter was worse. They were beautiful and I miss them.

So if that's the cake, how do I eat it and live?. If reality was altered in some forgotten future, that leads me to

part 3: Why the fuck.

I think, or I have become to believe, that I the things I'm supposed to learn in this reality ammount to some form of wisdom or discretion, and I have to wonder why that's the highest good I can attain when buddah and Jesus already mastered their respective crafts.

And finally, part 4: schism, destitution.

Does persuing the retrocasting problem lead to schizophrenia, or am I fated to live and die an empty life in persuit of some higher ideals that don't actually exist. Do we exist in a temporary universe, the creation of which, I am the catalyst? Or, and far more likely, am I reaching at straws to help me cope with the vaguest outlines of memories that never happened anywhere.

Part 5 will be titled profit, and I probably won't publish that until after I have had stepped away from my death bed.

Off to the races with Retrieval

Somewhere around the end of April I sent Retrieval out for coverage from We Screenplay. I splurged and got full coverage from two readers. One was very enthusiastic about the script and gave me a "Consider" and the other one was positive but less enthusiastic overall and gave me a "Pass." I busted my ass in order to pump out another draft that took their notes into consideration before brining the script to HSSW on May 17th. It was a slog but I got it done. I sent it out for coverage from the less enthusiastic reader and the result was that I turned the "Pass" into a "Consider".

Felt fucking great.

They still had some things to say, all of which make a lot of sense and I'll likely work on over the summer, though honestly it shouldn't take me that long. The thing they most strongly urged me to change was the amount of "editorializing" in the descriptions noting that they get "dinged on this" all the time. Its and easy enough thing to take out and I may just do that and update the draft I sent off to the competitions. Or I may not. I'm sort of up in the air about it. I have submitted Retrieval to: Screencraft (Sci-Fi), Script Pipeline, Launchpad, The Script Lab, and Tracking B. Oh, and Austin. Now I wait.

“It has everything to do with it.” Sci leans forward again. He turns the monitor back around. “Because your tracker will be different. It will take time to make. And I’m talking simply a week or month. I mean a good chunk of time—exactness unknown. That relied on the testing and if it even works.”

“How is it different, exactly?” Nightmare asks, crossing his arms. “I have a few guesses, but I’m not the expert here.”

Sci weighs the question over for a moment, drifting off in thought. Then he holds up a finger. “One, it has to be magical. It needs to be able to lock onto Dream’s magic, in all of the positivity already emanating from the AUs. It needs to be able to distinguish AU from person, raw magic from a soul. Since Dream doesn’t have something on him to trace—he’s not the most technological person.” A tired smile forms and Sci chuckles to himself. “Doesn’t have a phone. Blue tried to get me to make him a phone behind his back. Dream returned it in the week. All that hard work, down the drain.” Then, as if to soothe whatever worries Nightmare has, he adds, “I didn’t scrap it. It’s my phone.”

Nightmare nods, just to be polite. He doesn’t really care. “Two?”

CHAPTER THREE IS LIVE!!!

Heyo!! So sorry about the wait. I had a gift exchange to focus on, and then I procrastinated on that all month and fell into a bit of a slump, but I am now back at it. I do have another gift exchange this month, but if I pace myself and prioritize correctly, I should hopefully get it done in time, or maybe even before the deadline. That'd be nice.

Oh, and I do have a job interview this week. If all goes well, I will be getting my first real job...well, ever. This does mean I might not have as much time to write as I do now, and I might put the job and adapt to it before any updates on fics, so don't have too high of hopes for consistent updates going forth.

In other news, some important information drops this chapter that I'm excited for you to see! You'll have to let me know what you think. I would love to hear some theories, too, if you have any.

Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works has confirmed that it is developing the SR-72 spy plane. The successor to the SR-71 Blackbird, which was capable of Mach 3.5, the SR-72 will be a hypersonic unmanned aircraft capable of Mach 6, or just over 4,500 mph. At hypersonic speeds, the SR-72 will be able to traverse any continent in around an hour — meaning, if they’re strategically positioned around the world on aircraft carriers, the US military can strike or surveil any location on Earth in about an hour. It is also suspected that the SR-72’s hypersonic engine tech — some kind of hybrid scramjet — will find its way into the US military’s High Speed Strike Weapon (HSSW), a missile that can theoretically strike anywhere on Earth in just a few minutes.

 Position Summary

Reporting to the Vice President of Marketing, this position is responsible for the success of HSSW’s events program including: Walk/Run for the Animals (May) and the annual Auction in the Country (July).

 To produce excellent fundraising events, the Events Coordinator must have the temperament and ability to work with diverse stakeholders, including staff, volunteers, donors and the community to achieve event goals.  The Events Coordinator must be well-organized and competent in vendor management; communication skills; attention to detail; and a collaborative nature will set apart the best among the candidates. Enthusiasm and passion for the job are required to be an ideal candidate.  The position necessitates a standard for excellence, enthusiasm, an affinity for event planning and execution and the ability to successfully manage multiple events from inception to completion within strict timelines.

 Job Duties and Responsibilities

Events

Work with the Vice President of Marketing to identify goals, budgets and requirements for events.

Create and produce unique events that are memorable and stand out among the many nonprofit activities in the community.

Plan events with attention to financial and time constraints; work with various timelines and projects which happen simultaneously.

Work with municipalities and hosting venues to gain access and support for events; book and coordinate entertainment, venues and schedule speakers.

Negotiate with vendors to achieve the most favorable terms; research vendors (catering, decorators, musicians, etc.) and select the best combination of quality and cost.

Work with vendors to procure giveaways, work with rental companies, decorators, sound and lights.

Manage all event operations (preparing venue, invitations, etc.); work with graphic designers in the creation of materials and graphics; solicit volunteer support and hire contractors.

Identify and ask for donated auction items and possess the ability to work in fundraising platforms (Greater Giving and CrowdRise).

Oversee all “day of” event tasks and responsibilities.

Finalize all event wrap activities, including paying invoices, final analysis, and wrap up communication with donors.

 Marketing

Provide a high level of customer service to HSSW patrons, donors, event participants and other departments.

Foster teamwork, maintain positive communications, and highlight departmental goals and accomplishments to HSSW staff and volunteers.

Develop, edit, and proof materials and correspondence.

Support marketing and advertising activities; including print, electronic, website, social media.

Other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Marketing.

Professional Qualifications

At least 3 years’ experience working as an events coordinator with a demonstrated ability to manage major projects from inception to completion within a strict timeline to achieve excellent results.

Exemplary verbal and written communications skills.

Previous experience working in the field of event planning for a non-profit or for-profit organization required.

High level of confidence with 3 years’ experience engaging with donors, board members and the public.

High level of integrity and professional maturity to handle stress and remain calm.

Strong proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications.

Computer literacy, with experience with fundraising databases. 

Must possess a valid driver’s license with insurable driving record; employment contingent on acceptable Motor Vehicle Record per HSSW policy.

 Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

This position requires you to be comfortable with speaking with people and to groups of people; set up for events and move supplies/materials; repetitively use hands to operate computers, telephone and cell phone; use computer keyboard for extensive periods of time. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Work is performed in a standard office environment, with exposure to environmental conditions that include working near animals. Primary workplace is at an animal shelter that operates 7 days per week, with potential exposure to fractious animals, high noise levels, zoonotic diseases, animal bites and scratches, cleaning chemicals, allergens and potential exposure of infectious diseases to owned animals.
