oh my this is a dangerous ask. but ask and you shall receive. i have soooooo much to say abt them they are both so freudian its kinda gross but basically heres the rundown.
CW: freudian understandings of sexuality and trauma, reference to/discussions of the oedipus complex
OK brief summary on how freud understood sexuality. basically its Everything. and lots of his theories around human sexuality were built on his research on trauma and the subconscious mind. obviously he was a fucking freak and silenced his own abused patients with his published theories BUT. there is something to be said about the manifestation of sexuality and the taking on of sexual/gendered roles as a response to trauma, including the oedipus complex.
so obviously theres a lot of mother symbolism for both of them especially ho-seok. but so much of the tension between ho-seok and ji-min comes down to their mothers and the wounds they left on them. and i think the closeness between them too and how ho-seok reacts to ji-min's mom in 15 september year 20 goes so beyond oedipal desires of her and his munchausen. i think ho-seok straight up wants to be ji-min's mom. to him a mom is someone who loves you and who cannot abondon you - hence why he was in denial for so long. ho-seok is the carer of the group, he is the rock essentially, he nags them, he dotes on them, etc. plus the only image he has of his mother are unreliable biased memories from a childhood that probably wasn't that good. this plus his obsession with goodness and his warped idea of love and who he is truly makes it that motherhood also translates to perfection. its what he ascribed to be. he embodies motherhood to make up for what he doesn't have.
so in the notes 15 sep year 20 he reacts yes to the presence of a mother figure which alienates him from ji-min who he thought was "like him" - sad, lonely, sick, repressed - and from her as well. he cannot be her. he cannot have ji-min like she can. he feels inferior to her. he no longer belongs in that hospital room with ji-min because his true carer is there. on one hand he wants to have someone as important but also be someone as important. like he's THERE at the hospital with ji-min and he tries to follow before being kept back and he brings it upon HIMSELF to break ji-min out, to keep him in his apartment, and is confused when ji-min says he wants to go home - as in, "what do you mean? am i not your home?" its why he's such a nag its why he sticks around with the guys despite everything and despite seeing himself a little more highly than them. something something womb envy something something mom friend but repulsive. inversely ji-min is drawn to ho-seok for this same reason. because he takes care of him. he's perfect in his eyes. he wants to be like him too. (and if you want to look at hyyh jihope as a romantic pair well that would translate to sexuality as well. though it doesnt have to.)
TLDR theyre a gross pair of repressed freudian subversives acting out their self-pity through an oedipal dramaturge its craaazyyyyyy.
