4 8 11 for wip ask
hiya! thanks for the ask <3
4. dont walk too close
oh my GOD okay this might be my favourite wip at the moment. i started it a little while ive been on a hmt break because i was in need of angst and this fic is ANGST.
i dont want to say too much in case it turns out to be really spoilery, but its a sirius-centric/black brothers-centric fic that starts right as sirius leaves for hogwarts. ive seen a lot of depictions of him rebelling against his parents before he went to school, but what if he didn’t? what if he was their perfect son, but somehow ended up in gryffindor and learned that maybe the world wasnt what he thought? what if that changed everything?
what if — stick with me now — what if it changed where regulus was sorted, too?
yeah, thats right — im talking gryffindor!regulus.
the fic is gonna follow all of sirius’ first year — including the holidays — and then his second year too (regulus’ first). i dont know how far along ill take it, but if it only goes as far as second/third year, there’ll at least be an epilogue showing snapshots of later years. here’s a lil sneak peek of the very start:
Generally, Sirius Orion Black III was not afraid.
He did not hide; he did not cry; and he did not tremble.
Today, he felt like doing all three.
Of course, he wouldn’t. Mother had raised him better than that, for a start, but the pure humiliation of showing that sort of emotion was beneath him. He was a Black, for Merlin’s sake. To show his fear was perhaps one of the most ridiculous things he could do.
”Now, remember what I told you, Sirius,” his mother instructed, adjusting his shirt collar to sit properly against his neck. It was a little tight for him, but it made his jaw look sharp, so he wore it anyway. “You don’t want to go making acquaintances with the wrong sort.”
”I know, Mother,” said Sirius with a nod.
”And you tell the hat you’re a Slytherin like a good boy.”
Sirius nodded again. “Yes, Mother.”
Licking her thumb, his Mother smoothed back a lock of his hair that had fallen out of place. “I expect a letter home before the end of the first week to inform me of your fellow housemates and the connections you’ve made.”
”Of course, Mother.”
Stepping back, Walburga Black eyed him appraisingly, then nodded to herself. “Good. Kreacher!”
With a crack, their house elf appeared before them, head bowed. “Mistress Black,” he croaked.
”Take him to the station. Make me proud, Sirius,” she added with a stern look. Sirius only had time for a short nod before he felt the elf’s bony hand wrap around his wrist and with another loud crack, the pair of them burst away.
8. the warmth of your arms rivals the sun (its burning out)
hdfjgukyaegrf okay so this is a sequel to hold me tight (and never let me go), so im not going to say too much about it. all i will say though is that it is very james-centric. there are of course storylines for wolfstar, and for jegulus as a whole, but it is a james fic. it is my baby. you’re getting nothing more ;)
11. sink your teeth in
so, this one’s just a one shot i think. it actually might be integrated into either hold me tight, or the sequel. basically its touching on some of remus’ fears about his lycanthropy and how it might affect his relationship with sirius now that theyre becoming more — well — serious. i really like it actually, but its still in planning as well so there’s no snippet to share :(
thanks for asking! <33

Do you have anymore headcanons about the glory that is HMT's Papa Hollis? Mostly stuff about him being a supportive Hollstein shipper?
i think abt papa hollis a lot tbh bc he’s just so Good. one of my faves is that for hollstein’s tenth wedding anniversary, he presents them with this gigantic photo book - and i mean book; it’s a leather-bound book with glossy photo paper - of hollstein over the years. he starts with their college days [he’d forced laura and carmilla into taking a photo together in their freshman year dorm on move-in day bc that’s what parents do] and works all the way up through their relationship (so far). it’s composed of the snapchats laura (and eventually carm) sends to marc, candids he gets of them during visits and vacations together, holiday card photos, facebook and instagram photos, etc and laura cries for like a week abt it

It’s that time of year again!
We have the diaries for the new year and we’ll be shortly taking appointments, however this time round we’re trying something different.
Because the demand for Saturdays is always high we’re going to open for two late night sessions a week.
So everyone who has booked ‘full days’ before still can, but these will be now referred to as 5 hour appointments.
If you need to book around work we’ll have ‘evening’ appointments starting from 16:00 on a Weds & Thurs where you can sit 2-3 hours respectively.
This should hopefully save you guys some of your well earned holiday time and make it quicker to get through large scale projects!
As for 2018 appointments James will be contacting ongoing clients shortly, with new projects picked up from Oct 31st onwards.
Thanks! Team HMT.

Powin Energy Powers Up 2 MW/8 MWh Energy Storage System for Critical Grid Support in California
From concept to commissioned in six months
Powin Energy, a leading manufacturer and developer of scalable energy storage systems for commercial and utility customers, announced today that its 2 MW/8 MWh Millikan Ave. Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Irvine, California, is officially online. The Millikan Ave. BESS provides emission-free and highly reliable critical peaking capacity and grid support services to Southern California Edison (SCE). Powin Energy developed the project and manufactured, installed, and commissioned the system in less than six months from the date the project was awarded, an industry first for an energy storage asset of this size on a distribution system.
“The natural gas and resulting capacity shortages due to the Aliso Canyon emergency shutdown necessitated that we bring this project online by the end of 2016. I am so impressed by our team’s performance on this project – everyone worked long hours over the holidays to meet this incredibly short project timeline,” said Geoff Brown, President of Powin Energy. “This also would never have been possible without the support of our project partners at HMT Electric and Eaton. I’d also like to thank SCE and the City of Irvine for their extensive support completing this interconnection and permitting process in record time.
“This project’s success was essential for Powin. It allowed us to demonstrate how quickly our system can be deployed and how our bp-OS software eliminates many of the hardware components that other battery vendors use for calibration and balancing. We strongly believe that deploying grid support resources in months rather than years and at a fraction of the cost of a gas peaker plant presents the power industry with an attractive alternative to serve their peak capacity needs.”
The Powin Energy BESS is interconnected on the Virgo 12 kV distribution line out of the Estrella 66/12 kV substation and can deliver 2 MW of power for over four continuous hours, providing a reliable and continuous source of energy during peak demand events. In addition, the system will supply regulation and flexible capacity support as needed. The storage system consists of over 2,400 Li-ion battery packs, each containing 3.7 kWh of lithium iron phosphate prismatic modules. Eaton provided the power converter, transformers, and switchgear. Powin Energy’s project was selected through a competitive solicitation initiated in response to the California Public Utilities Commission’s (CPUC) Aliso Canyon Energy Storage (ACES) request for energy storage systems that could be operational by the beginning of 2017.
Powin’s BESS is controlled by the company’s bp-OS – which includes the industry-exclusive Battery Odometer and Warranty Tracker™ – that was patented in both the United States and China in 2016.

Interview – Nirupesh Joshi, Founder of Bangalore Watch Company, on Building a Watch Brand in India
Nirupesh Joshi and his wife Mercy Amalraj founded Bangalore Watch Company in 2018 with the goal of representing 21st-century India with exciting and high-quality watch collections. Neither worked in the watchmaking field prior to this, as both had successful tech and consulting careers. Nirupesh is an aviation and watch enthusiast and grew frustrated by his home country’s lack of desirable watch brands. His latest collection, the MACH 1, celebrates the Indian Air Force MiG 21 Type 77 with multiple design elements and perfectly encapsulates the brand’s ethos. The limited MACH 1X (21 pieces) even has a dial comprised of aluminium alloy from a MiG 21.
I recently talked with Nirupesh about India’s watchmaking history, his thoughts about in-house production, the inclusion of Swiss movements in current and future collections, and much more. This burgeoning brand from Bangalore is certainly one to watch.
Nirupesh Joshi and his wife Mercy Amalraj, founders of Bangalore Watch Company
Erik Slaven, MONOCHROME – Can you tell us a little bit about India’s watchmaking past?
Nirupesh, Bangalore Watch Company – We’ll have to get through a small history lesson to understand this background. India has always had a taste for high-quality watches. The Royalty of India and their penchant for fine watches and jewellery from Cartier or Van Cleef and Arpels is well documented. This trend of high consumption continued throughout the period of British occupation of India – the story of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso concept, born after a polo match, is well known. After the British occupation ended and India gained independence, Nehru – a forward-thinking political leader and the first prime minister of independent India – brought forth industrial reforms in the 1950s modelled after the Soviet system of Autarky. HMT (Hindustan Machine Tools) was set up in the mid-1960s and was tasked with producing the first indigenous wristwatch brand in the country. Using technology transfer and training from Citizen Japan, some estimates put HMT at producing about 115 million watches during its lifetime.
The Bangalore Watch Company MACH 1, proudly representing the modern side of Indian watchmaking.
In the 1980s, India’s economic stance changed. We opened our economy to the world and laid the foundation for what is today a fully globalized economy. Import duties, which were extremely high for luxury goods, were also reduced by a significant margin. This brought an influx of Swiss and international brands to India.
In the recent past, the rising middle class made room not only for Swiss luxury brands but utility brands like Titan and Fastrack. Fossil and its portfolio of contemporary fashion brands like Armani, Michael Kors, etc… have also found a strong foothold with the rise of e-commerce and ‘shopping mall’ culture. Today’s wristwatch market in India is truly a buyer’s market and the customer is king with a multitude of options.
With well-known Indian watch brands (past and present) like HMT, Titan and its sub-brand Fastrack, how does Bangalore Watch Company distinguish itself from these larger, more familiar brands?
There is a certain romance about HMT. They’re really affordable watches with an average price of $30 to $50 and are from a bygone era. The Indian government officially announced the closure of HMT in 2013 and all overstock items are being sold now. Titan and Fastrack are utility brands and almost everyone in India starts with a Titan and quickly grows into other brands.
If you’re a young executive in India, there’s very little in the wristwatch space that excites you. How much longer are you going to pretend to be excited about a watch dedicated to a US flight training school or a US space mission?
Bangalore Watch Company has a clearly defined audience. Our customers are upwardly mobile, well-travelled, well-read, executives and business owners, and excited about the idea of wearing well-built watches that are inspired by stories from India. They’re also aware that they’re buying a product that’ll last a lifetime and won’t cost them their next international holiday.
Therefore, we never see ourselves competing with a Titan or Fastrack.
I previously asked you about in-house movements, which are not part of your near-term roadmap, but are there any plans for in-house production of components – cases, dials, hands, etc.?
We’re always on the lookout. Our hands (and perhaps dials in the future) are produced by our partner company in Bangalore. They are very reputed in the hands and indices business and supply many well-known Swiss brands as well. Cases, however, are a no.
Authenticity is a big part of our brand ethos. We’ll never pretend to do something that we know we’re not good at. We’ll play to our strengths and use the best partners we can find for things we need help with. The wristwatch manufacturing ecosystem in India is at a different level. The quality and workmanship required to execute high-quality watches like the ones we want to make are just not available in the country. The pursuit of “Made in India” sounds fancy, but it’s futile given the ecosystem today.
Your watches have been relatively affordable to date. Are you considering more luxurious, expensive watches that rise well into four figures (EUR/USD)?
Our aim was to create a brand with authentic storytelling and decent quality at the sub-$1000 price point. We are just two collections into that journey now and are excited about the huge opportunity that lies ahead. We have a ton of exciting stories we want to bring out through our future watch collections as we did with the MACH 1.
We also recognize that there is an opportunity and appetite for watches at a higher price level, both in India and overseas. If we do pursue that, however, it’ll be under a different label.
As a self-confessed aviation enthusiast, would you revisit the IAF and other aircraft for a future collection? Perhaps the HAL HF-24 Marut fighter from the 1960s, the first Indian jet (just as an example)?
The only other story that came close to being the inspiration for a pilot watch collection was the HAL TEJAS LCA (Light Combat Aircraft). This fighter plane is entirely developed in India, including the avionics by our ADA (Aeronautical Development Authority). Multiple squadrons of IAF are now scheduled to induct this plane for light combat roles. Very cool fighter jet and a very cool story!
You mentioned an expensive watch you almost purchased in Hong Kong but ultimately passed on as you never really connected with it. Could you share what brand and model it was?
There were two watches. First, the Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon. I was never into the Speedy as it was just not my style. But, when I first tried on the zirconium oxide ceramic case, I was smitten by how it felt on my wrist. Second was the IWC Pilot’s Watch Top Gun Chronograph. Obvious for a guy that’s into planes, eh?
Your new Mach 1 series have Swiss Sellita automatics. Are you exploring other Swiss movement options for future collections – ETA or Soprod, for example? Would you return to Miyota or use a Seiko calibre?
Sellita has turned out to be an outstanding choice for us. They were very flexible with our requests, deliveries were on time and the movements are very easy to service. We’ll continue using Swiss movements for all of our projects as long as they can meet our pricing goals for what our customers are willing to pay. If we use an ETA or Sellita mechanical chronograph, it’ll push the prices beyond what our customers would be comfortable paying. So, it all comes down to that.
Are there any Indian companies you would collaborate with for a watch or collection? Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki or Air India, for example.
Seven out of ten owners of BWC watches are from India. For a large majority of India’s young people, mechanical watches aren’t as exciting as their next new smartphone or 65-inch flat-screen television. We’re trying to make high-quality watches exciting again, hence the storytelling. Tata, Maruti or Air India are all seen as ‘legacy’ brands, and may not serve our cause. On the other hand, collaborations are always fun and allow us to widen our customer base. We have a couple of projects that are in the works, but I have to be tight-lipped about them now!
Exotic or labour-intensive dial materials are definitely popular these days, such as meteorite, enamel or even wood. You used aluminium alloy from a MiG 21 for the Mach 1X dial. Are there any plans for more speciality dials?
I mentioned earlier that we don’t like to follow a trend just because it is cool. For us, it’s all about the story. If a material adds more authenticity and excitement to the story (like the MACH 1X), we will try our best to get it done. There are a couple of exciting stories in the pipeline, so you’ll have to keep your eyes peeled.
The MACH 1X model with aluminium dial
Have you been inspired by either a watch brand or specific individual in the industry in regard to design, technical specs, etc.?
There are many, so here’s a list of what inspires me most.
Jean Claude Biver for his clarity of thought, Christopher Ward (watch brand) for its business model, Oak and Oscar for its community, Konstantin Chaykin for its innovation and Hajime Asaoka for his modesty.
With Covid-19 dominating the news and causing global disruptions to business and daily life, do you see a potential angle for watches? A model that donates a portion of sales to the medical effort, etc.? And just as a side note, you’re in the “Silicon Valley” of India and Samsung’s Research Institute in Bangalore just developed an app for their Galaxy smartwatches to remind wearers to wash their hands every two hours. They developed and published the app within two weeks. Cool stuff!
Mercy, my wife and business partner, and I contributed to a few charities from a personal capacity. We don’t see a business angle here. Right now with the shipping delays and lockdowns, our goal is to ensure all our deliveries are on time and letting our customers know they can reach us if they need us.
For more information about the brand or to make a purchase, visit their website.

That Was the Year That Was – 1948
Free healthcare, free schooling, free love – and now early retirement free from the financial woes that plague the rest of us. Could there be a luckier year to have been born than 1948?
As pensions fall off a cliff, the smug 61-year-old is planning the next safari or cruise. Nourished and nurtured by a "cradle-to-grave" welfare state and protected by final salary, the holy grail of pension schemes, the 1948ers would appear to have had it all.
Those of every generation are inclined to believe themselves more fortunate than the previous. But in Britain, 1948 keeps ticking the boxes. "We are, indeed, the blessed people," says the author and broadcaster Gyles Brandreth, who attributes their timely conception to the "bitterly cold and austere" nights during the 1947 fuel crisis.
"We missed out on national service. We had the golden age of the Eagle and the Beano together. No other generation had them combined."
Sharing his birth year with Prince Charles, Lord Sacks, the chief rabbi, and the singer Lulu, he detects another trait. "Everyone born in 1948 was a great achiever. You either become chief rabbi or king. It’s almost automatic."
BRITAIN 1948
Britain has changed greatly since 1948. Today people are much richer. They live in far more comfortable homes and ordinary people can afford things that were luxuries in 1948 (like foreign holidays). People are also healthier and they live longer. They also have things like the internet that were not even dreamed of in 1948.
British society has changed a great deal since 1948. In the 1950s large numbers of West Indians arrived in Britain. Also from the 1950s many Asians came. In the late 20th century Britain became a multi-cultural society. There was another changed in British society. In the late 20th century divorce and single parent families became much more common.
For a long time after 1948 unemployment remained very low and the late 1940s and the 1950s and 1960s were a long period of prosperity. However this ended in the mid-1970s. In 1973 there was still full employment in Britain (it stood at 3%). However shortly afterwards a period of high inflation and high unemployment began. In the late 1970s unemployment stood at around 5.5%.
In 1948:
A quarter of British homes had no electricity.
People often lived in the same town all their lives, near their families.
There were often more than three children in every family.
One third of the British population went to the cinema at least once a week.
There were only 14,500 television sets in the whole country and there was only one channel (BBC). Hardly any homes had a television.
Most families listened to the wireless (radio) for their entertainment.
Many homes did not have a telephone or an indoor toilet.
Cooking was done from scratch using produce grown locally. You could only buy items that were in season and most of what you bought was made or grown in the UK.
There were only just over a million cars on Britain’s roads.
Petrol rationing remained until 1954. For most people, this made the car an unaffordable luxury. Most people used public transport to get around.
Air travel was mainly for the rich. To go abroad, most people travelled by ship.
The average weekly wage was £3 18s (£3.90). Now it is about £400.
In 1948, most people in Britain worked in manufacturing industries, where they made things (in factories for example). Heavy industries like coal mining, iron and steel making, ship building and engineering employed millions of workers. Most of these workers were men. The majority of women stayed at home to look after their families and their homes.
Today, most people work in service industries such as education, health, shops, banks and insurance, where they provide services for other people. There is very little heavy industries left. People can buy of make the same things cheaper elsewhere. New technology means that factories use more machines to do the work and fewer people.
More women work today. It is normal for women to have jobs, even if they have young children.
SS Empire Windrush
The arrival of the SS Empire Windrush in June 1948 at Tilbury Dock, Essex, in England, marked the beginning of post-war mass migration. The ship had made an 8,000 mile journey from the Caribbean to London with 492 passengers on board from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and other islands.
Most of the passengers were ex-servicemen seeking work.
This marked the beginning of post-war mass migration.
When they walked down the gangplank onto British soil they could not have imagined that their journey would begin an important landmark in the history of London and the rest of country.
The passengers on board the Windrush were invited to come to Britain after World War Two, to assist with labour shortages.
Many of the passengers had fought for Britain during the war.
They later became known as the ‘Windrush Generation.’
Later, Enoch Powell, the Tory Health Minister from 1960-1963, was to invite women from the Caribbean to Britain to train as nurses.
It was he who several years caused an uproar with his anti-immigration ‘rivers of blood’ speech.
In reality the response to the call for labour was minimal and by 1958 only 125,000 workers had arrived in Britain from the Caribbean islands. However, there were also other factors at play.
National Health Service is established
The National Health Service, established by the post-war Labour government, represented a fundamental change in the provision of medical services. The General Practitioner (GP) service became organised on the basis of a ‘capitation fee’ paid by the government on every patient registered with a doctor. Voluntary and municipal hospitals were integrated under state control, exercised by the Ministry of Health.
Olympic Games open at Wembley Stadium in London
The so-called ‘Austerity Games’ were held in London while rationing was still in force in Britain. Fifty nine nations took part, but the defeated powers of Germany and Japan were excluded. London saw the first Olympic photo finish, in the 100 metres, and the introduction of starting blocks for sprinters. These were the first Games since Berlin in 1936. The 1940 Games went to Tokyo, then Stockholm, but were cancelled – as were the 1944 games – due to World War Two.
UK cost of living 1948
Price of an average house £1,651.
Average Salary £300 a year.
Average Family Car £590.
Litre of Fuel £0.02.
FLOUR 1.5KG £0.04.
