Launched 7 March 1970 HMS Courageous (S50) was an Improved Valiant Class nuclear attack submarine (SSN) in service with the Royal Navy from 1971 - 1993.
In 1982, Courageous along with her sister ship, HMS Conqueror, was sent with the British task force to retake the Falkland Islands from the occupying Argentine forces. She returned home later in the year without damage. Courageous was retired from service in 1992. She is now a museum ship at Devonport Dockyard.
During the HMNB Devonport Navy Days 2006, one of the members of the team restoring HMS Courageous pointed out that HMS Valiant was one of the first Royal Navy submarines to have her reactor removed. As Valiant had been cosmetically wrecked by this work, HMS Courageous was selected for the museum ship to represent the nuclear submarine fleet of the Royal Navy during the Cold War.
Components were removed from HMS Valiant to restore Courageous. HMS Courageous was due to be moved in 2007 from her current berth to a new berth, due to development of the HMNB Devonport area where she resided.

IMAGES: Royal Navy says goodbye to Hawk T1 training jets
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 03/21/22 - 12:00 PM in Military
The Royal Navy's Hawk T1 jets flew through the United Kingdom this week to say goodbye, as these veteran aircraft were withdrawn from service.
Tumblr media
Based at Culdrose Royal Navy Air Station (RNAS) in Cornwall, fast jets have been a pillar for decades in training Royal Navy naval pilots and NATO ships in air defense.
Tumblr media
The BAE Systems Hawks have been used by the RAF for 40 years and Royal Navy aircraft date back to the 1990s. They were first based on RNAS Culdrose in 1994 and were incorporated into the reformed 736 Naval Air Squadron in 2013.

Hawk Fly past.
It was announced in the Integrated Review last year that the Hawk T1 fleet should be retired on defense, with the exception of the Red Arrows, and it was decided that the 736 Naval Air Squadron would be deactivated in late March 2022. Other cuts announced in the period included, or will include, the BAe146 VIP fighters, Typhoon Tranche 1 fighters until 2025 and the C130 Hercules, which will retire in 2023.
Tumblr media
On March 17, three jets took off from RNAS Culdrose and flew around its main training sites, including HMNB Devonport, RNAS Yeovilton, Bournemouth Airport and then HMNB Portsmouth, before heading to HMS Gannet in Prestwick, Scotland. The next day, the trio returned home with air tickets at the RAF bases of Valley and Pembrey in Wales.
Tumblr media
"We must recognize that this is a sad day for everyone involved with the Hawks, but we should not lose sight of the significant contribution these aircraft have made to defense," said Lieutenant Commander Jason Flintham, commander of the 736th Naval Air Squadron. "I think it's fair to say that Hawks jets have been the exceptional workhorse of the military."
Tumblr media
“They have been used by the 736 Naval Air Squadron to train frontline assets of the Royal Navy and NATO since 2013. We use them to train ship forces against incoming aircraft or to simulate missile attacks, as well as to train Royal Navy fighter controllers," Flintham added.
Tumblr media
The jets also performed other functions such as training air traffic controllers, surveillance and air control teams and assisting in the development of radars. They regularly participated in major NATO multinational exercises, such as the Joint Warrior Exercise in Scotland.
Tumblr media
"Of course, it's not just about these superb aircraft. A squadron is composed of men and women whose professionalism and dedication make the squad a success and fulfill its defense objectives. We thank everyone who has served over the years, including those in industry and the armed forces," concluded Flintham.
Tumblr media
Some of the pilots have already joined the training programs for the next generation F-35B Lightning jets in the United Kingdom, which operate from Navy aircraft carriers.

Did something I should have done a while ago and visited the Scott of the Antarctic memorial near HMNB Devonport in Plymouth.
This is a masterpiece of sculpting and masonry probably not possible to replicate today. The four sides of the plinth are carved with words from the last line of Tennyson’s Ulysses: ‘To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.’
Etched above the bronze relief that shows he and his crew’s final hours, his last diary entry:
“Had we lived, I should have had a tale to tell of the hardihood, endurance, and courage of my companions which would have stirred the heart of every Englishman.”
