The Importance of HIV Testing: Know Your Status, Save Live
HIV, the human immunodeficiency virus, continues to be a significant global health challenge. With millions of people affected worldwide, early detection and prompt intervention are critical in curbing the spread of the virus and ensuring better health outcomes. In this blog, we will delve into the importance of HIV testing, the various testing methods available, and the benefits of knowing your HIV status.
The Importance of HIV Testing
HIV testing is the first step in the prevention and management of HIV. Testing not only helps individuals to be aware of their HIV status, but it also plays a crucial role in reducing new infections. People who are unaware of their HIV-positive status are more likely to unknowingly transmit the virus to others. By identifying new cases and providing appropriate care, HIV testing can break the chain of transmission and reduce the prevalence of the virus in the community.
Knowing Your HIV Status
Knowing your HIV status empowers you to take charge of your health. If you test negative, you can continue practicing preventive measures and make informed decisions to stay HIV-free. Regular testing is essential, especially for individuals at higher risk, such as those engaging in unprotected sexual activity or sharing needles.
For those who test positive, early diagnosis is vital for timely initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART). ART can significantly suppress the virus, enabling people living with HIV to lead healthy lives and reducing the risk of transmitting the virus to others. Moreover, early treatment can help preserve the immune system, preventing the onset of AIDS-related complications.
Types of HIV Testing
Several testing methods are available, catering to different preferences and situations:
Antibody Tests: These tests detect the presence of HIV antibodies in the blood or oral fluid. It’s the most common testing method and is often used in healthcare settings or community testing centers.
Rapid Tests: Rapid HIV tests provide results within minutes and are highly useful in settings with limited access to healthcare facilities. They can be performed using blood or oral fluid samples.
Nucleic Acid Tests (NAT): NATs detect the virus’s genetic material and are highly sensitive, offering accurate results early in the infection. They are commonly used for screening blood donations.
Home Testing Kits: Home testing kits allow individuals to test for HIV in the privacy of their homes. Users collect a sample, usually a blood drop, and then send it to a laboratory for analysis or get rapid results.
Breaking Barriers to HIV Testing
Despite the importance of HIV testing, certain barriers can hinder individuals from getting tested. Fear, stigma, and lack of awareness are among the primary reasons why some people avoid testing. It is essential to address these barriers through community education, awareness campaigns, and non-discriminatory healthcare practices. Making testing easily accessible and promoting confidentiality can also encourage more people to get tested.
Conclusion
HIV testing is a fundamental tool in the fight against the HIV epidemic. It enables early diagnosis, access to life-saving treatment, and empowers individuals to make informed decisions about their sexual health. Moreover, testing helps break down the barriers of fear and stigma surrounding HIV, fostering a more understanding and supportive society for people living with the virus. Remember, knowing your HIV status is not only a personal responsibility but also a collective effort in building healthier communities and a world free from HIV/AIDS. So, Get tested By DrSafehands .

Global genocide, what a beautiful choice...
In case you missed it - and a golf update seems to have knocked it off the front page - Republicans are threatening to kill millions of people in order to protect "the unborn child." No, not just pregnant women like usual, but men and children - everyone.
The US has been giving HIV/AIDS meds to people who can't afford them, internationally, for about two decades. Most of the institutions distributing these meds are Catholic. Catholics are infamously anti-abortion - to the point of allowing mothers to suffer and die, just like Republicans! This program has a requirement to spend money teaching abstinence - it was penned into law by G. W. Bush! It seems like there shouldn't be a conflict of interest between these two groups, but there is now, and there's a clock ticking down to when these people won't get the meds they need to stay alive.
I suspect our old friend "intellectual property" also has a hand in this situation. It doesn't look like we've spent any money over the last two decades on building infrastructure so these places can make their own damn meds, we just buy them premade and ship them. Actually helping these places manufacture these very expensive drugs would eat into the profits of the pharmaceutical companies that "own" them. It's much better for Gilead there if people just buy drugs and send them. We can just keep doing that forever, right? It's good PR!
Well, now we're in a position where a grandstanding, megalomaniacal political party can hold millions of orphaned children hostage while crowing that they're "saving babies". The Republican solution is that these foreigners should be "responsible" and pay for their own meds... while US companies sit on the patents and jack up the damn prices as high as the market will bear. Yeah, that'll work great.
I've already fled the States. If Democrats can't stop this from happening... You... You can't expect me to keep filling out a ballot and giving you a fig leaf of legitimacy. I found out this year that you didn't even stop stealing children at the border. You can't ask me to keep behaving like it's going to be fine and the system can heal itself if I just keep participating in it. I don't want anything to do with this. I am being dragged kicking and screaming to check a box for people who throw up their hands and refuse to help because, I dunno, maybe this time they might? And then they try to tell me this is my fault, for not being centrist enough.
I dunno what I'm gonna do. I mean, distract myself. Keep redistributing wealth by fair means and foul. And keep yelling about these things. But apart from that...?

delayed access & cost of HIV/AIDS medications has been a struggle… since the days of AZT
then there was millionaire Martin Shkreli, who raised the price of a 13$ drug to 750$ overnight.
patent law needs to be abolished.
big pharma receives billions in taxpayer dollars annually. they rely on universities to perform research. most of their actual cost is in advertising/marketing.

It's pritty fucked up that Tuberculosis is still killing people even though we developed treatments and screening methods a long time ago.
There is this company called Danaher that makes test for, among other things, TB. But, since they are a corporation, they prioritise profit over people's lives. So they sell the tests at as high a rate that they can get away with.
I think this is bad, so I want you to sign this petition to pressure Danaher to make their tests $5 each

One thing I want to add to this is that to "get around" paying for coverage, HDHP plans are becoming more prevalent. They won't cover a lot of Medical costs until you hit your deductible regardless if you have a copay. And even a small (under 5K) deductible can be difficult for a family or individual to afford/meet. What they want you to do is get a HSA (those are fine but have rules) or an FSA (these have some *extra* shenanigans) to pay for your healthcare until you hit that deductible. So, y'know, yes you have coverage and can't be denied/kicked off your plan for existing but it's can be a bitch and a half to get health insurance to actually pay for shit.
That said: the ACA was the right move. We need it. We need it expanded. We need the same kind of health coverage as places like Norway and Sweden.
One thing the analysts back in 2012 were right about is that they’d stop calling it “Obamacare” the second it started working and lo and behold anytime it was actually threatened under Trump it became The ACA and now Leftists who were in Kindergarten when the ACA was passed think Democrats have added nothing to this country.

This is Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s lesser-known 1988 painting work ‘Forbidden Colors.’  And here is part of the statement he released to accompany its first outing at the New Museum that same year: “It is a fact people are discriminated against for being HIV positive. It is a fact the majority of the Nazi industrialists retained their wealth after war. It is a fact the night belongs to Michelob and Coke is real. It is a fact the color of your skin matters. It is a fact Crazy Eddie’s prices are insane. It is a fact that four colors red, black, green and white placed next to each other in any form are strictly forbidden by the Israeli army in the occupied Palestinian territories. This color combination can cause an arrest, a beating, a curfew, a shooting, or a news photograph. Yet it is a fact that these forbidden colors, presented as a solitary act of consciousness here in SoHo, will not precipitate a similar reaction. From the first moment of encounter, the four colour canvases in this room will “speak” to everyone. Some will define them as an exercise in color theory, or some sort of abstraction. Some as four boring rectangular canvases hanging on the wall. Now that you’ve read this text, I hope for a different message.
For all the PWAs.”

A Big TB Announcement
Greetings from Washington D.C., where I spent the morning meeting with senators before joining a panel that included TB survivor Shaka Brown, Dr. Phil LoBue of the CDC, and Dr. Atul Gawande of USAID. Dr. Gawande announced a major new project to bring truly comprehensive tuberculosis care to regions in Ethiopia and the Philippines. Over the next four years, this project can bring over $80,000,000 in new money to fight TB in these two high-burden countries.
Our family is committing an additional $1,000,000 a year to help fund the project in the Philippines, which has the fourth highest burden of tuberculosis globally.
Here’s how it breaks down: The Department of Health in the Philippines has made TB reduction a major priority and has provided $11,000,0000 per year in matching funds to go alongside $10,000,000 contributed by USAID and an additional $1,000,000 donated by us. This $22,000,000 per year will fund everything from X-Ray machines, medications, and GeneXpert tests to training and employing a huge surge of community health workers, nurses, and doctors who are calling themselves TB Warriors. In an area that includes nearly 3,000,000 people, these TB Warriors will screen for TB, identify cases, provide curative treatment, and offer preventative therapy to close contacts of the ill. We know this Search-Treat-Prevent model is the key to ending tuberculosis, but we hope this project will be both a beacon and a blueprint to show that It’s possible to radically reduce the burden of TB in communities quickly and permanently. It will also, we believe, save many, many lives.
I believe we can’t end TB without these kinds of public/private partnerships. After all, that’s how we ended smallpox and radically reduced the global burden of polio. It’s also how we’ve driven down death from malaria and HIV. For too long, TB hasn’t had the kind of government or private support needed to accelerate the fight against the disease, but I really hope that’s starting to change. I’m grateful to USAID for spearheading this project, and also to the Philippine Ministry of Health for showing such commitment and prioritizing TB.
One reason this project is even possible: Both the cost of diagnosis (through GeneXpert tests) and the cost of treatment with bedaquiline are far lower than they were a year ago, and that is due to public pressure campaigns, many of which were organized by nerdfighteria. I’m not asking you for money (yet); Hank and I will be funding this in partnership with a few people in nerdfighteria who are making major gifts. But I am asking you to continue pressuring the corporations that profit from the world’s poorest people to lower their prices. I’ve seen some of the budgets, and it’s absolutely jaw-dropping how many more tests and pills are available because of what you’ve done as a community.
I don’t yet have the details on which region of the Philippines we’ll be working in, but it will be an area that includes millions of people–perhaps as many as 3 million. And it will include urban, suburban, and rural areas to see the different responses needed to provide comprehensive care in different communities. This will not (to start!) be a nationwide campaign, because even though $80,000,000 is a lot of money, it’s not enough to fund comprehensive care in a nation as large as the Philippines. But we hope that it will serve as a model–to the nation, to the region, and to the world–of what’s possible.
I’m really excited (and grateful) that our community gets to have a front-row seat to see the challenges and hopefully the successes of implementing comprehensive care. Just in the planning, this project has involved so many contributors–NGOs in the Philippines, global organizations like the Partners in Health community, USAID, the national Ministry of Health in the Philippines, and regional health authorities as well. There are a lot of partners here, but they’ve been working together extremely well over the last few months to plan for this project, which will start more or less immediately thanks to their incredibly hard work.

"A first-of-its-kind report has discovered that altering the ingredients list or manufacturing methods of widely used medication can really cut back on carbon emissions.
They found a reduction of 26 million tons, enough to cancel out the whole carbon footprint of the city of Geneva for a decade. Best of all, it’s already happening, and in fact, is almost done—those emissions were already saved.
The lifesaving HIV treatment dolutegravir (DTG) is used by 24 million people worldwide.
Today, over 110 low and middle-income countries have adopted DTG as the preferred treatment option. Rapid voluntary licensing of the medicine, including its pediatric version, to over a dozen generic manufacturers, significantly drove down prices, and it’s estimated that 1.1 million lives will be saved from HIV/AIDS-related deaths by 2027.
Its predecessor, efavirenz, contained 1200 milligrams of active ingredient across the three active compounds present, while DTG contains 650 milligrams of just one compound. This small difference—literally measurable in single digits of paper clips by weight—was enough to change the carbon emissions footprint of the medication by a factor of 2.6.
The incredible discovery was made in a recent report by Unitaid, a global public-private partnership that invests in new health products and solutions for low and middle-income countries, called Milligrams to Megatons, and is the first published research to compare carbon footprints between commonly used medications.
“This magnitude of carbon footprint reduction surpasses many hard-won achievements of climate mitigation in health and other sectors,” the authors of the report write.
At the rate at which DTG is produced, since it entered into production and treatment regime in 2017, 2.6 million fewer tons of CO2 have entered the atmosphere every year than if efavirenz was still the standard treatment option.
Health Policy Watch reports that the global medical sector’s carbon emissions stand at roughly 5% of the global carbon emissions and are larger than the emissions of many big countries, and 2.5 times as much as aviation.
“This report demonstrates that we can achieve significant health improvements while also making strides in reducing carbon emissions. By adopting innovative practices and prioritizing sustainability, we can ensure that medicines like DTG are not only effective but also environmentally responsible,” Vincent Bretin, Director of Unitaid’s Results and Climate Team told Health Policy Watch."

The two programs under which Haitians fleeing some of the worst political chaos and gang violence in the Western Hemisphere have been OK’d by the Biden administration to remain in the United States as protected refugees are perfectly legal, and if Vance thinks otherwise he should challenge the rulings in court, not by demagoguing it on the campaign trail. There’s considerable evidence that the 20,000 figure that Vance and other right-wingers have claimed is the number of Haitians who’ve moved to Springfield during the President Joe Biden years is a big exaggeration. And even local Republican politicians are calling out Vance’s lies, including a heartfelt essay by GOP Gov. Mike DeWine, who’s from the Springfield area. [...] Three days after the debate, Vance tweeted: “In Springfield, Ohio, there has been a massive rise in communicable diseases, rent prices, car insurance rates, and crime." [...] The claim about a massive rise in communicable disease in Springfield or surrounding Clark County is just a flat-out lie. To the contrary, county officials say 2023 was actually the lowest overall for contagious illnesses in eight years. Vance’s false claim hinges on a yearly rise in two specific diseases — tuberculosis and HIV injections — yet local officials note these numbers are so small they tend to fluctuate from year to year, and there’s no evidence Haitian Americans played any role.
Will Bunch: JD Vance’s new lies about immigrants are worse than ‘eating dogs and cats’
Lies on top of lies, wrapped up in lies.
Because he has no record of his own, and Trump’s record is indefensible.
And they have no plan to help anyone but themselves and a handful of oligarchs. And, of course, Russia.
We are not going back. Check your voter registration every week between now and your state’s deadline. Make a plan to vote, and vote as early as you can.
The sooner we don’t ever have to hear these clowns again, the better. Let’s do this.

I didn't want to put this person on blast but I can't believe that we're at a point where we are venarating the idea of "trustworthy brands" in the era of corporate monopolies. when X company has an e coli outbreak for the 5th year in a row caused by their lobbyists vying for deregulating inspections and quality control, people will continue to buy their products due to the fact that alternatives have been limited with legal red tape, if not priced out of being able to compete entirely. what accountability do you believe exists in the real world here. there are farmers with patents on plants. arguing that branding aids PHARMACEUTICALS in particular is outrageous considering we literally saw a life saving HIV medication patented and priced at $42k despite the fact it can be made for $40 just this year! these things do not exist for the good of the public!

A study published last month in the New England Journal of Medicine found a 100% effectiveness rate for the drug in a study of 2,134 women in South Africa and Uganda. However, Gilead at present charges $42,250 for an annual two-shot regimen — a price obviously far out of reach for working and oppressed people. Producing the drug costs Gilead just $28, meaning the company is collecting a 1,500% profit on each treatment!

A generic version of a drug that’s “as close as we’ve ever been to an HIV vaccine” could be made for $40 a year per patient (with a 30% profit). Current pricing by Gilead: $42,250 per year.
