[Image Description: an Undertale chat box with the name "PAPYRUS", in all caps and Papyrus font, in its center. On its left is a talksprite of Papyrus sweating anxiously, and on its right is a talksprite of Papyrus wearing sunglasses. End I.D.]
The Great Papyrus is the most popular Undertale character among the fans surveyed here. 19.6% of responders chose him as their favorite. That’s a total of 519 fans! (Wowie!!)
Not all Papyrus fans are unified on his characterization, however. The most obvious divide was between fans who call him a “cinnamon roll” or “precious baby,” and those who find these takes infantilizing. A lot of people like the friendliness and optimism of this character, while others recognize this but highlight his maturity too. Fans who worry about his infantilization seem most concerned with how he can be portrayed as naive or dumb by the fandom. A portion of fans specifically mentioned this naivety as a point in his favor, though the marginally more popular take seems to be that he is not naive, regardless of how he first appears. This fandom divide seems to relate to Papyrus’s autistic or ADHD coding. Many fans relate to him as ADHD and autistic themselves.
Fans also related to him in his desire for friends. Many responders think of him as a friend and a comfort character, so at least in one way his wish has been fulfilled.
The phone calls were a major reason that fans said they felt connected to Papyrus. Thanks to these calls, he has the most dialogue of any character in the game. His humor and dialogue were often highlighted as favorite qualities.
While fans may disagree on some aspects of Papyrus’s personality, it is clear that his fans all value his optimism and kindness. His fans do not see his kindness as weakness. Many talked about the complexity of his character and the strength it took for him to show mercy to the player character, even when the player doesn’t show it in return. He believes in himself, and he believes in you! This kindness and trust has inspired his fans to be kinder themselves.
Papyrus fans were also drawn to his mysteriousness. Several responses pointed out that he is a more mysterious character than Sans, who is also often loved for his mystery. As shown in the phone calls, Papyrus will put on fronts depending on who he is around, making it even more difficult for fans to uncover his secrets. Some people in other sections of the survey found this frustrating, but Papyrus fans tend to see it as another point in his favor.
Among the greatest proportion of responses were from fans who couldn’t choose a favorite trait, or who just love everything about Papyrus. While these responses may be less lengthy, they are still as full of love as the essay-length answers. These responses tended to say phrases like “cool dude” or “Papyrus my beloved” or “THE GREAT PAPYRUS.”
(You were overcome by writing about such a handsome skeleton. He understands.)
Highlights: (under the cut)
Honestly Papyrus just feels like joy. Funny, incredibly kind, with a few mysteries/weird quirks about him that are fun to ponder over. I especially love how he often acts proud and self aggrandizing without putting others down, and in fact sometimes uses that to lift his friends up alongside him. You don't see this take on proud characters often.
Papyrus is strong. Strong in body, but also morally strong. He knows what is right, what it means to be merciful and kind, even in the face of danger or death. Some think him naive. And yet, even facing death and seeing the dust of those he knew, he did not falter or turn from his ideals of mercy and change for the better.
BECAUSE HE IS THE GREAT PAPYRUS
His optimism and his overall personality is endearing! You're always having fun with him :D
He's meeting all of my standards.
Papyrus is very under appreciated, and overlooked, and it's very frustrating to me—he's a complex character but people treat him like he's a baby!!! I like him because he's kind of goofy with how he talks and he's just very charming and kind.
He's weirder than Sans, and it wasn't acknowledged for years because he acts oblivious and dumb, even when he's clearly not. Quite frankly, I find it iconic. Also, his entire personality helps a lot.
I'm ND, trans, and projecting!
OK SO he's just a friendly guy!! A dude who likes cooking for his friends!! We love a hype man!! Also smart as hell and I feel like fanon majorly overlooks this. Making good, fun puzzles is HARD and setting up a flamethrower to go off wirelessly is complicated. Like even if that bridge puzzle didn't go off the components were complicated. Love that cool dude!!!!
I heavily relate to Papyrus as a character and consider him my favorite fictional character of all time. He is a very well-written and thought out character with several quirks and layers in his personality. It is headcanoned by some (myself included) that Papyrus may possibly be on the Autism Spectrum due to his nature, his interactions with others, and overall how he displays himself to the world we see.
I could talk about Papyrus forever, and you have made a grave mistake in allowing me to do so. He is a charming, strong spirited, well intentioned, complex character that is often wildly misinterpreted, and I think originally this is why I was drawn to him. He is presented as one thing and in fact acts as one thing (though not the same way as presented by fandom), and in reality when you look closer than you are meant to he is not, in fact, any of these things. It was intriguing to me. Secondly, and rather contradictorily, another thing that drew me to him is that he is very true to himself, when it comes to idiosyncrasies and moral values. It's true that he does not offer much in the way of personal backstory and feelings, but he offers very much indeed in the way of personality. What a guy! He wears silly crop tops and bright colors, he speaks in a manner specific to him that sometimes doesn't make sense, he cares about something or someone and goes whole hog with it -- he's passionate, damn it! I love him and his weirdo, goofy self with all my heart. He cares about other people to a fault, too. He would sacrifice everything to help someone, and his belief in the potential of both others and himself is indomitable. When faced with the responsibility of a kingdom, his friends gone, his brother lying to him, and himself all alone without a reliable support system, he recognized what he was facing and still bucked up and became determined to get through it. When faced with a murderous, over powerful enemy, someone who had killed many of his friends and fellow monsters, someone who had repeatedly been rude and borderline aggressive and showed no signs of stopping, he saw that they were having difficulty and offered to help and to care for them, and didn't regret his decision or change his opinion on what they needed and their potential for change, even when quite literally killed by them a moment after. Even in death, even directly after a betrayal like that, he never stops believing that they can get better, that anyone can be a good person if they want to be. That's important, I think; that concept of giving people the chances they need to grow and to change. I have a tattoo of that moment on my thigh, it's that important to me. I guess I really like Papyrus because even though he is fictional, watching him out there makes it easy to believe in people, in our inherent goodness and desire to love each other. He makes it easy to see that we can change, that no matter what you've done in the past or who you currently are, no one is inherently a bad person, and no one is incapable of learning how to be a good one. It is just a step by step process that we have to take day by day.

Hey there! I hope I'm not bothering you! I'm writing this story and I need advice on how to write Rolf. I saw your Ask Rolf account and you write him really well... any tips?
Not at all! ❤
First thing’s first:
1) It’s not necessary to tack on ‘‘yes’‘ and ‘‘no’‘ at the end of every sentence. Too many writers do this. XD
2) He’s totally allowed to break from third person when deemed appropriate. Rolf actually consciously speaks in third person, it’s not the language barrier at all. If anyone wants to revisit the first season, he always spoke in first person. He didn’t start speaking in third person till the second season because apparently it was not a character trait the writers adapted for him until much later (keep in mind, they were still figuring out the characters and all their quirks). We didn’t see enough of the secondary characters in Season 1 for them to fully form and become the fleshed out individuals we know and love from the later seasons. But yeah, re-watch ‘‘Oath to an Ed’‘ and you’ll notice Rolf never speaks in third person. Even after referring to himself in third person became his trademark idiosyncrasy (playing into the foreigner stereotype), he still knowingly breaks from it all the time. Mainly to exercise authority. Now doesn’t ‘‘Do as I say?’‘ carry more weight than ‘‘Do as Rolf say?’‘ Yeah, I think so too. :)
3) (I hate this word for personal reasons but for a lack of a better term) the ‘‘broken’‘ English is very mild, hardly noticeable (if that!). Try not to overdue it. Though he still obviously struggles with the language barrier, he’s a lot more fluent than people give him credit for. (Note: He’ll say ‘’This one is easy’’ not ‘’This one easy’’. Or a better example, “This empty roll must be replaced with a new one."  Complete sentence. If it was terribly ‘’fractured’’ it would sound something like this: ‘’Empty roll must be replaced with new one.’’) I think it’s the thick accent that makes his speech sound more ‘’broken’’ than it actually is to the Western ear. Though sometimes his grammar is kinda weird, it’s not all that ‘’crippled’’. Sometimes I use the way I used to speak English for authenticity (usually I had trouble with contractions and would replace words like ‘’don’t’’, ‘’can’t’’, and ‘’won’t’’ with ‘’not’’. For example, instead of ‘’I don’t know’’ I used to say ‘’I not know’’). Which brings me to my next topic.
4) Bilingual skills! Eventhough he strains to pass his English class and other classes of challengingsubject matter, his bilingual skills verbally improve in Season 5. Where Rolf is shown tospeak mild ‘’broken’’ English in the first coupleseasons, he returns in Season 5 much more articulate than we remember him. Thoughhe still claims to find English complicated, and scores F’s on his Englishexams and homework, he’s also able to ramble the entirety of the Englishlanguage dictionary a la Double D. In other words, his vocabulary broadens fromjust country riddles to methodical flowery arrangements. Go figure. Rolf’sEnglish is actually very fluent, even though at times, he wrestles to find theproper words to express himself, but it seems he mainly has trouble withstructure and grammar, rather than a lack of comprehension for his secondlanguage. Though simple-minded phrases like ‘’Tony Baloney’’ and ‘’flatdoodle’’ are not obsolete from his day-to-day jargon, he’s adopted massive ‘’DoubleD’’ words like ‘’protuberance‘’ ‘’fortitude’’ and ‘’retribution’’ in hisspeech, and uses them in perfect context and pronunciation without missing abeat, never mind his thick Eastern European accent. He gains so much confidencein his newfound, increased cognitive abilities that he takes a risk and entersthe Spelling Bee in ‘’Too Smart for His Own Ed’’. Prior to the competition, aviolent panic attack seizes him, preventing him from spelling even a simpleword like ‘’watch’’, and during his turn, he chickens out due to a publicspeaking anxiety, but we have to give him credit where credit’s due.
He was so confident! Damn you stage fright!
Tumblr media
Why does he look like he’s going to spitthe most fire verse of the century?
Ahem. Point is, don’t hold back from giving him big vocabulary. He’s actually not that simple-minded or, as Double D would say ‘’uneducated’’. Someone who took it upon himself to learn a foreign language can’t be all that dumb. Yes, he’ll still refer to raisins as ‘‘doohickeys’‘ but he knows what a wallet is. Keep him Old World but don’t make it sound like he was was raised by wolves and lived in a cave his whole life. He’s an immigrant, not an idiot. He’s crossed oceans on a canoe, he’s probably seen more of the world than any of the kids in Peach Creek who’ve never been father than their own backyards. He’s kinda wise beyond his years.
That being said, it’s totally realistic for him to still struggle with finding proper words and expressions to express himself. For instance, I’m MUCH better at English than I used to be but I still have my moments. Just recently, my American friend used the phrase ‘‘cracking up’‘ and I thought she was either a) angry or b) losing her mind. She proceeded to explain to me that in that particular context, she meant she was laughing really hard. Mind blown! I’m also still confused by some English idioms that don’t exist in my language. ‘‘Knock on wood’‘ is one of them. I still don’t get it, no matter how many times my friend explained it to me. There was also a funny instance I had a long time ago. In my country, we have a saying that describes someone who’s named after someone or something famous. Like, if your name is Fanibhusan, named after Lord Shiva, we call that something… and I was having major difficulty finding the English equivalent to that. I originally used the word ‘‘trivial’‘ having no idea what ‘‘trivial’‘ actually meant. It only sounded right to me because I associated ‘‘trivial’‘ with the word ‘‘trivia’‘ but my friend said that wasn’t right, because that actually meant the opposite of what I thought it meant, which is ‘’of little value or importance’’. So we spent a good deal trying to figure out what I was trying to say, but in the end, my friend broke the news to me that there was no such thing in the American English language. Sooooooooo bilingual people, even half fluent ones like me, are still going to have those moments. Sometimes you’re going to have that constant translating in your head… although when I’m speaking English to my English speaking friends, I tend to think in English, if that makes sense. XD
5) Immigration! Everyone’s favourite subject. Welp, it’s much appreciated when fanfiction writers don’t totally ignore his status. It shapes him as the person he is. However, you don’t have to dwell on it either. Don’t confine him to a label. He’s a person first, immigrant second. Make it known he likes basketball and candied beets before you let ‘’immigrant’’ define him, because then that just clumps him into the image of a faceless mixture of brown people hopping fences and negative stereotypes. Let him be a proud Son of a Shepherd first and foremost. Let him be happy and carefree, because this kind of representation is just as important as any social issue. He doesn’t have to be a sob story to make me feel represented. Rolf’s prone to heartbreak, and he does get homesick, and it’s very important to realise the challenges and culture barriers he faces, but he’s also upbeat and positive. It’s important to have that balance of both real struggles coupled with childhood nostalgia.
6) Most importantly, have fun! Go nuts!

Apartment #718 New York, New York 205 December 30
Duo had been growing impatient the further they got into the holiday.  The secret he and Heero had been holding between them was beginning to eat at him.  Waking up next to the other man a few days prior after having wandered into Heero’s room sometime during the night had only shaken his resolve to keep his mouth shut.  He desperately needed some advice.
So, this evening he waited for an opportunity and pounced when it presented itself.  Sidling up to Trowa while the rest of the group was otherwise preoccupied with one thing or another, he asked, “Can I talk to you?”
Trowa quirked an eyebrow at the request.  “Of course,” he replied but when Duo hesitated, he suggested, “fire escape?”
The two of them headed to the window that led outside, Duo grabbing a blanket en route, and one after another they climbed out onto the metal ledge.  Duo fought the chill by wrapping the blanket tightly around his shoulders while Trowa took up a position in the opposite corner, seemingly unaffected by the winter air.
“So what did you want to talk about?” Trowa asked.
“I need some advice,” Duo muttered.
“On?”
“Heero.”
Trowa chuckled, his laughter edging toward incredulous.  “I think you’re the best positioned on understanding Heero’s idiosyncrasies.”
A knot started to form in Duo’s belly at the words, his chest going tight.  He worried his lower lip tween his teeth and looked away, down several stories to the street below.  “Can you keep a secret?”
There was a pause.  And then, “If I need to.  What’s this about?”
Duo turned his attention back to the other man and found him curious and concerned in equal measure.  It was almost funny.  Almost.  “Heero and I…we’re trying this…thing.” He struggled with the words.  “An experiment.  To see if we can make things work with each other rather than someone else.”
There was a beat as Trowa connected the dots.  “Jesus, you two are dating?”
Duo expelled a frustrated sigh.  “I guess.”
“What do you mean you ‘guess?’”
“It doesn’t feel like dating.”
Trowa considered this.  “What do you mean?”
“It’s like nothing has changed,” Duo clarified.  “It’s like we’re still just friends.”
“In my experience, that’s usually a good thing,” Trowa told him, sounding amused.  “Be patient.  You don’t actually have to jump his bones now.”
The knot in Duo’s stomach tightened.  Quietly he asked, “What if I don’t want to?”
“You don’t want to sleep with him?” Duo shook his head.  “Have you told Heero that?” Duo shook his head a second time.  “Why the hell not?”
“Because I keep thinking, ‘Maybe now.  Maybe tomorrow.  Maybe after this phone call.  Maybe next month,’” the words tumbled out of him in a wave.  “It’s not just Heero,” he murmured, “It’s anyone.  Everyone.  And I don’t…I don’t want him to think he’s done something wrong because he hasn’t.  And I know…I know I should stop this before it goes too far, but I…”
“But you like him,” Trowa concluded for him when Duo couldn’t finish his sentence.  They shared a moment of silence and then Trowa asked, “Who else knows about this?  Your apathy toward sex, I mean.”
“I told Hilde when she visited in Jakarta.”
“What did she say?”
“She fed me some line about just needing to find ‘the one.’”  Duo drew some comfort in the derisive snort that came from the other man.  “She meant well,” he added, “but it hasn’t exactly been helpful.”
They lapsed into silence then for a time, each left to their own thoughts.  Duo shivered as a gust of wind blew through the street, the fire escape offering no shelter from New York’s winter.  His fingers were beginning to go numb while his heart sank in his chest.  He had hoped for solace in talking to Trowa, reassurance that this was somehow normal, that he was overreacting.  But with each passing moment, his dread grew.
And then Trowa spoke, gentle and thoughtful.  “What if…what if this is just how you’re wired?”
This had not been something Duo expected to hear.  He squinted over at the other man, uncertain.  “What do you mean?”
Trowa remained quietly thoughtful as the idea matured further in his head.  “In all the infinite ways a human being is put together to seek out the things it needs or wants – be it through genetics or socialization or personal experiences – who’s to say this isn’t normal?  Or at least your normal?”
The choice of words was a familiar one, bringing with them a fading image of a patient psychologist, the scent of leather, and faint hopes.  Duo clenched his teeth against the memory and tightened the blanket around his shoulders.  Refocusing on Trowa, who was still looking out over the city, he prompted “Go on.”
“Well…” Trowa began, his breath making white clouds in the cold air between them.  He shifted where he stood and seemed to regather his thoughts, starting over.  “So, the way I see it…the world needs to maintain stability to continue to function.  There’s a constant state of balance, counterbalance, rebalance, etcetera.  So, if the world can produce someone like Wufei – who’s only interested in women – it will produce someone like Heero – who only has eyes for men.  Likewise, if it can produce someone like me – who has never once given much of a damn how my partners identify – then, if the pattern holds, it will also produce someone who isn’t remotely interested in anyone.  There’s a word for that, you know.  It’s called ‘asexual.’  It’s the default setting for easily millions of people throughout the Earth Sphere.
“The more important part – the one you’re actually warring with yourself over – is what you’re going to do with this part of you if in fact it is your normal.”  At this, Trowa turned to level his unflinching eyes on him and Duo struggled to hold that gaze.  “Because if it’s normal, then you’re not broken, which means there’s nothing to fix.  And if there’s nothing to fix, then what the hell do you tell Heero.”
Duo grimaced and turned away.  His chest hurt like he’d taken a blow.  He forced himself to ease up on his clenched jaw and worried his lower lip between his teeth instead.  He berated himself silently, tucked into a corner of the fire escape as he was.  He was an idiot to have thought this conversation would have gone any other way than validate what he’d already suspected.
But then, from the other side of the fire escape, Trowa murmured, “Can I…dare to give you some advice?”
Duo looked up at the hesitance that preceded the question and found the other man’s gaze distant.  “Yes,” he answered, his own voice hoarse.
“Trust and honesty and truth go both ways – for yourself and for your partner.  Relationships don’t work without them.  But that sick feeling you’ve got in your belly right now…I’ve felt that too.  It lies.  It feeds on your fears.  It isn’t the truth.
“Truth is what you feel when you’re together and you kick all that self-doubt to the curb for five minutes.  It’s the fact that he can get you laughing in a sea of people on the dance floor.  The fact that you sleepwalk into his bed at night.  The fact that he told you nothing would have to change between you for this – whatever this is – to be a possibility.”
“He said I was first,” Duo whispered, more to himself than the other man.
“And I recommend you believe him,” Trowa urged.  “Heero is not one to make hollow promises or bullshit proclamations.  He’s earnest to a fault.”
Duo choked back a laugh and felt the corners of his lips twitch upward in a tired smile.  He let silence settle between them as he took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, feeling the weight that had settled over his chest begin to lift.
The window behind them slid open with a harsh snap, making each of them jump.  Wufei stuck his head and shoulders outside into night air and glared at first Trowa and then Duo.  “If you two stay out here any longer, you are going to get hypothermia.”
Duo glanced over at Trowa who sat patiently waiting for a signal.  Duo kept his gaze steady as he nodded in the affirmative.
Thankfully, Trowa read it for what it was – conversation over.  To Wufei, he said, “No…I think we’re on our way in.”

Tru’s Writing Notes
I’ve had people ask me after seeing my feedback on stories if I’m as overanalytical with my own stuff. The answer is yes. My stuff may often be written at 4 AM and typo-laden, but yes.
Because of that and @thesecondsealwrites talking about process (though unlike her post, this is more the why/how than the everyday practicalities of writing), here are some of the notes I’ve left myself in my journal. These apply mostly to the way I write my original rather than my fic, but they can apply to both. Can I add: a lot of these probably seem very obvious, I know, and I don’t always manage to bear them in mind. Also, I’m not a pro or even a talented amateur, and these aren’t addressing an audience, they’re addressing me - and they apply more to the way I write than writing in general. But if anyone might find this interesting or wants to know if I worry about my writing, here’s your answer.
People tend to like a strong story, with good reason. The best plots tend to be simple, and then you build outwards and maybe twist. A compelling central arc, certain genre tropes or something familiar tend to be what work: forbidden romance, or an unsolved murder and a maverick. We have a fair idea of what’s going to happen, but it’s the anticipation - and/or the eventual subversion - that brings the fun. Plot and drive.
Again, try to have a strong idea of where it’s going, or the spirit of it. Terry Pratchett once said that you want to be able to write your own blurb: it’s a good sign if you can distil the essence of your story into a hundred words or so.
Just like real people, characters have verbal tics, peculiar turns of phrase and certain mannerisms. Learn them, and use but don’t overuse. Keep it natural.
Some people just don’t like present tense, or past, or first person, for whatever reason. You may be buggered from the start, and sometimes all you can do is try. Try and know your audience, try your best. Try not to bang your head against a wall.
However, present tense is a slippery bastard. At its best, there’s almost nothing that can match it for immediacy and visceral intensity. At its worst, it can either be staccato, bleak and overly clinical - or at the other end of the scale, it can be overwrought sensory overload. Either way, a reader will be put off. Ideally, I try to balance the two and end up somewhere in the middle: punch and verve, but with restraint and room for the reader to infer. I rarely manage this, but God do I try.
Speaking of inference: don’t assume the reader is an idiot. Sometimes the best punchline or explanation is the one that’s never given. Myself, my favourite horror stories are the ones that don’t go for shlock and shocks: they’re the ones where I finish them feeling mildly unsettled, go and do the washing-up while my mind puts the pieces together, and then go, five or ten minutes later, “Oh God, it was behind the door the whole time! That’s... Argh.”
People are terrifyingly complicated. Every reader brings something to the text, whether they’re aware of it or not. This can add unexpected beauty or poignancy, but it can also make implication, idioms, dialect and offence into total minefields. People can come out with things that would never have occurred to you. Something might fly over someone’s head, or something might turn out to be an incredibly offensive phrase in their country and perfectly innocuous in yours; someone might find your happy ending the most depressing thing in the known universe, and someone else might hate your likeable romantic hero because he reminds them of their arsehole ex. Sometimes you can anticipate this and take countermeasures for clarity’s sake; often you don’t need to because theirs is a perfectly valid interpretation and part of the joy of making a cake is seeing people eat it; and mostly you just can’t know, because people come in so many different permutations and you’re not actually psychic, so leave them to it. Gah.
Watch your tenses. Things like flashbacks are nightmare territory and ripe for grammar slippage. Never be afraid or too proud to read up on usage.
Same with semicolons. Tricky little gits.
People mangle language. Doesn’t matter whether you’ve had the “perfect” education, everyone does it at least sometimes. People lose words, misuse vocabulary (me, all the time), go for double negatives, mix metaphors. You always want your dialogue to be readable, and you don’t want your portrayals to be hackneyed or offensive, but it’s generally unnecessary to aim for perfection in dialogue unless it’s for effect: say, if you want to make a character less approachable, if you want to show they’re not human, or if rose-tinted dialogue is a stylistic choice. Generally, true-to-life dialogue is inherently descriptive rather than prescriptive.
Sometimes said mangling leads to fascinating new quirks, dialect and expressions.
Speech is very different from thought. A character’s narrative voice is often quite different to their dialogue voice. Thought is much faster than speech, and sometimes someone will answer their own question before they’ve finished saying it. Thought is by nature more disjointed, and thought is also a monologue, unless everyone’s suddenly turned telepathic or you’re dealing with dissociation/multiple personalities. In contrast, speech has a listener, which changes it. Nerves can make phrases choppy or make them fail completely. Often people interrupt each other. Realistic dialogue should reflect this.
On a similar note, let your characters talk. Know where to draw the line - no-one wants the tension ruined by a half-hour conversation about socks - but very few people are all business or all dramatic emotion all the time. (Those who seemingly are will have reasons for it, and those are often worth exploring, too.) Unless you’re on a particular word and/or time limit, let your characters occasionally be real people whose eyeliner runs, or who dislike artichokes, or who make bad jokes - and people who don’t revolve completely around your protagonist, with their own internal lives. When done right, relateable is not boring - especially if you’re working in a fantastic or dramatic canon. The odd anchor to reality can grab your heart and tug.
But do know where to draw the line. Let them be enigmatic and heroic when they need to, because often the magic is in that contrast between the epic and the mundane. Characters can do and be what we can’t. Don’t take away all their mystery and more idealised qualities.
There’s no one way to do funny, and there’s no way to write an instruction manual for it. Again, like most other things, it’s a matter of interpretation: everyone’s tickled by different things. But often humour relies on the subversion of expectation - bathos and anticlimax, for example, or giving an established word/phrase an entirely new meaning - or it relies on particular character idiosyncrasies, or on the other side, the utter, crushing fulfilment of expectations. (”Save the world, they said. It’ll be fun, they said.”) A good source of jokes is often that “I bloody knew it!” feeling.
Characters have biases, too. Always try and account for this in the narrative.
Foreshadowing is your friend, and often a key to emotional closure for the reader. Unless you can do some serious, stylish authorial sleight-of-hand, deus ex machina endings will prompt pissed-offness rather than satisfied applause. Even if you don’t introduce your secret weapon/s early on - best right near the beginning, if possible - at least get the key themes and characters down. You want to get an, “Oh, of course,” not “Well, that was a total arse-pull.”
Screenwriters sometimes talk of an A-plot and a B-plot. The A-plot’s the main one, and B is a seemingly separate subplot that inevitably turns out to be all tangled up with A. It’s pretty standard for detective dramas: there’s a murder, they start investigating, and the seemingly unrelated corpse on the other side of town always ends up being central to the case. A and B always converge. Often, if it’s a story with depth and a well-reasoned plot, the B plot will grow naturally. Of course, that’s only one way of doing it: some stories have a strong, driving A plot that drives everything and stands on its own, and have some C, D, E, F, so on plots. I admit, I’m not much good at the A + B plot thing, so I don’t tend to do it. If I have subplots, they tend to be less connected and a bit more character-driven, rather than about world-saving/murder-solving like the A plot. (I tend to half-jokingly call these C plots, where the C stands for “character” or “crying.”) Good characters usually write their own C plots - they have ulterior motives, hidden aspects, unexpected connections, and if you let them wander off they’ll make trouble for themselves. C plots are connected to the main plot, but unlike B plots, not a fundamental part of it. Sorry, screenwriters, for the terminology mangling.
Another trick to nick from Hollywood: the meet-cute. Sometimes you want someone to enter the narrative sneakily and unobtrusively, but often, especially with protagonists and love interests, never underestimate the power of a good, memorable character introduction. Audiences remember the ways they meet your characters, and the ways that characters meet eaxch other.
It’s not necessary for every story, but often it’s good to have a rock-bottom moment where everything looks hopeless. It reminds your audience viscerally of the stakes and penalties for failure, and it makes eventual victory even sweeter because it’s against the odds. Unless the light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train. In that case, rock on with your downer-ending self.
Often the best plot comes from character. (After all, Greek dramatists went on about this all the time with concepts like hubris and hamartia.) Even when nations clash, nations are run by flawed, corrupt people. Antagonists ought to have strong motivations unless you’re writing senseless violence/cruelty intentionally. So on. People often talk about the heart of drama being conflict, and some people, taking that to heart, write a war or their couple arguing. Yeah, that can work brilliantly, but there are other ways to do it, and conflict can be smaller-scale, too. It can be as simple as different aspects of the same character clashing; for instance, if they’re torn between love and duty (there’s a reason that one’s so popular), or the conflict between their past and present selves.

Online Dating Description Examples for Men
One thing you can do to enhance the chances that you can find love online, or that you can meet a man or woman who will share your life and your love and make you happy, is to write a great profile.
A profile that stands out will intrigue a few women and make them want to find out who the guy behind that profile can offer to them.
Accordingly, here are some online dating description examples for men to help you in that regard, if you are a man.
1. Let The Women Know What You Love And Why You Love It Show what you like instead of just stating it or just telling it. It will give the women who visit your profile the impression that you are an interesting guy who is communicative and who likes having fun. Research also shows that showing what you love makes women feel that you are an adventurous guy who can make them have fun and they are more likely to send you a message so that you can connect.
Additionally, let the women know why you love what you love. It will give them a deeper peep into who you are and it will make your profile look a lot more interesting.
So you may write, "Last Saturday morning, I was kinda bored in the house and so I picked up my swimming apparel, drove to the swimming club here in Kumasi where I live, changed my blue jeans and yellow T-shirt when I got there, and jumped right into the pool. Ooooh!, the water felt so good on my skin! That is the way I spend my weekends. It helps to keep me fit and healthy and it helps me to keep my 6-foot frame in shape."
2. Let Them Know Your Idiosyncrasies If you want the women who view your profile to get to know you well so that they can know whether they can connect well with you, share things about yourself that many men will not dare to share. For example, share some of your quirks and weird behaviors and odd things you do when you are alone in your room or when you are with your friends. It will make your profile look unique.
For example, if you love watching movies, you may write, "I enjoy watching thrillers most of the time, but sometimes I also watch romance movies or fantasy movies. You may have never heard this but do you know that I enjoy watching these movies when I am wearing my shoes? Even if I am in bed, I enjoy them better when my feet are covered. Funny isn't it? Guess I am some kind of weirdo, but that's me. And I can assure you you will enjoy watching a very suspenseful scene in a thriller with me. I shout and scream when the antagonist is tiptoeing to snuff out the life of the victim... " and so on.
Or, you may share how you feel when your sister gives you a hug or what goes through your head when you wake up in the morning. Stuff like that will tell a woman that you are an open guy who is prepared to share intimate information with her and she will trust you more.
Consequently, a lady who visits your profile may think to herself, "Wait a minute! This guy does not seem to be like all the other guys I have met on this site. What else has he got up his sleeves? Let me contact him and find out!"
3. Do Not Focus On What You Do Not Want, But On What You Want Showing that you are a positive guy can make you win a high rating in the eyes of the women on the dating site. You can let women know that you are positive when you tell them the kind of woman you want, and not the kind of woman you do not like.
For example, instead of writing, "I love watching thrillers. If you know that you do not love thrillers, don't contact me," write something such as, "I am looking for a woman who loves watching romance movies, reading romance novels, but who does not mind watching thrillers too!" This will make you look more friendly and sociable.
Conclusion In this article, I have shared with you online dating description examples for men. You can make these profiles great if you give details about what you love and why you love those things, quirks that will make women feel that you are a real guy, and what you want in a woman.

Couples Who Roast One Another on a Regular Basis Are Stronger, Say Researchers
Anjala Farahath February 6, 2019
If you’re in a relationship that rests on the comfortable shoulders of humor, then this is good news to you: couples who roast each other on a daily basis have a stronger relationship than those who don’t.
Picture this: you’ve found your better half and they seem to “tick all the boxes”. They are kind, loving, fun to be with, great with pets. They have managed to strike a chord with your family and friends, their pay cheques are decent, they know how to adult, they make you weak in the knees, and also they know exactly how to tickle your funny bone. Sounds like the perfect deal right? On the flip side, imagine spending your life with someone who can’t take a joke. That’s like having an undiffused bomb comfortably seated in the pretty hallway of your house. You don’t know when it’s going to explode. That’s a situation that you definitely don’t want to be in, right? So, apart from love itself, what makes a relationship strong enough to withstand such explosive situations? Read on to find out.

Love Humor Keeps Your Relationships Alive
Shutterstock
You can’t tiptoe around your SO and mince your words just because they don’t entertain your kind of humor. While love is important for any relationship to sustain and brave the winds of love and commitment, it’s not really enough. You can’t always shower your partner with compliments and whisper sweet nothings and expect the relationship to continue to have the spark even after decades of doing the same thing over and over again.
We all need some fun to feel alive, right? And that fun comes from the humor that you guys create together. It’s not enough if one of you is funny. The other one needs to get your humor too. C’mon, you can’t crack a dead baby joke with someone who considers that insensitive. To keep the relationship alive, you need to focus on what you both share and find moments of laughter and fun in that. For instance, does your partner snore? Don’t be hush-hush about it. Give them a funny name and tease them. Let them do the same with your quirks.
What The Experts Say
Shutterstock
A researcher at the University of Kansas, Jeffery Hall, conducted an intensive study over a span of 30 years to determine the importance of humor in relationships. He studied 15,000 people. Well, that’s a lot of relationships! He took three decades to analyze what makes relationships to swim or sink. According to him, relationships get stronger if the couple is capable of creating a humorous bond between them. The inside jokes, the funny names, the insults laced with love, all of those add the spark in your relationship. Being able to mock each other, tease each other, and annoy each other like friends and still not get offended is a relationship milestone that couples need to strive to achieve. So, if you’re wondering how to reach that milestone, here’s a quick lowdown-
Roast Each OtherJust For The Laughs

If two people are able to roast each other on a regular basis without the concern of being ticked off or being harmed emotionally, then that’s a sign of a strong, happy, and entertaining relationship. Think about the flaws and quirks of your partner that only you’re aware of. Do you treat that with humor or with utmost caution? Throw a few funny insults and pull your partner’s leg every time you find them doing something peculiar. Take cues from Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds if you need some inspiration.
The couple posted the following pictures on each other’s birthdays. While Blake posted a picture of the ‘other’ Ryan and cropped her husband out, Ryan Reynolds posted a picture of the two of them, where his wife is evidently cropped out. Now, that’s funny.
Troll Away Into Your Comfort Zone

Trolling is good as long as you know your boundaries and you don’t overdo it. We repeat, as long as you know your boundaries and you don’t hurt the other person. To be able to troll your partner, you both should be on the same page. Else, there may be a conflict. Understand your partner and understand the kind of jokes that they entertain about themselves. Some may be okay with funny statements regarding their appearance but some may take that as a direct dig at them. So, tread with care.
A Roast A Day Keeps The Monotony Away

All relationships have their highs and lows, but when you find fun in being together, you tend to lower the stress levels and increase the emotional and physical intimacy. Every relationship has its own idiosyncrasies that make it unique and when you’re chiding each other, you’re essentially creating a unique bond with each other. It makes your disagreements more agreeable, it helps you solve problems in a lighter way, and it makes you more invested in your relationship. The best part is that there will never be a dull moment.
The bottom line here is that the couples who laugh together stay happy together. If you’re in a relationship where you both fight like siblings, love like puppies, and laugh like your funny bone forgot to switch itself off, then give yourselves a pat and preserve that connection. Do you have any pro-tip on how to roast or chide your partner? Let us know in the comments section.
