dusting cocoa powder off your apron, you make your way to the front of house, wiping sweat from your forehead with the back of your hand.
signs of a visitor are left by the register - ¥180 and a missing lemon loaf, a red sharpie that wrote: 1 Chome-32-3 Hatagaya, Shibuya City, Tokyo 151-0072, Japan—on the napkin you shove into your work bag before closing shop early.
you don’t remember the last time you’ve talked to people your age. all the customers that visit the bakery are old and gray haired, not that it’s a nuisance; it would just be refreshing to have a conversation that’s not “when are you going to get married?” or “do I get a senior discount for being a regular?”
so you go. even if you barely know their names.
you take that chance.

author’s note: yes I made that venn diagram!! heavily inspired by a poetry book i read a long time ago that i cant remember the name of 😓😓 but i thought it was fitting

the amount of times someone said something to me and i went "huh?" and they tried to repeat it in english because they thought i didn't understand japanese, but i actually said "huh" because i straight up didn't Hear what they had just said to me. all i needed was them to repeat it in japanese for me but the barrier. the barrier!
omg this just made me remember a moment from the first time i went to japan. we were waiting at the meidaimae station at like 6 pm and this old man saw me and my boyfriend waiting for the train to come, and he started talking to us in english. he told us that the immediately next train was a local train and that it was going to be packed since it was rush hour, so we should wait for the express train that would come afterwards to get to hatagaya because it would have less people on it.
that wasn't the first time someone was nice to us as tourists/people who obviously didn't know what was going on, but it stuck with me because i always think about how he seemed so genuinely interested in giving us a helpful tip and excited to be able to talk to people in english. and after we thanked him and saw the packed local train come up, he just gave us a 😏 smug sort of look and we were like you were right!!! and then he just wandered away.

“Where does it all accumulate?
Tears that were supposed to go outside,
but were swallowed up…”
(From "The Moon Was Watching")
...
I have created a new edition of "sometimes, somewhere."
This is a collection of short stories featuring seven essays and seven fictional stories. I wrote them while recalling the novels that saved my younger self, who longed to go "somewhere that is not here."
This is being published as the first book of the beloved cafe Kabe to Tamago @kabetotamago in Hatagaya. If I hadn’t met the owners, this book wouldn’t have taken into shape. It truly makes me happy to publish this book under the name of such a wonderful place.
The new edition is with a spine. The design is by my old friend @pakpak.kimchi, and illustration is by @ksn_sola. Thank you so much!
It's available for sale starting today at the Kabe to Tamago. I hope to prepare for it to be available in bookstores as well.
