India women's cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur on Saturday credited head coach Amol Muzumdar for taking vital decisions for the team, conceding that she lacked the requisite experience of leading in Tests, after they completed a record 347-run win over England. India took precisely seven sessions to create the world record in terms of the largest Test win by runs, while also registering their first-ever victory over England at home and overall their sixth in 39 Tests, here at the DY Patil Stadium.Harmanpreet, who made her Test debut in 2014, led India for the first time in the format in this game."Our coach helped us a lot, I had zero experience in leading the team in Test," Harmanpreet told the media after the massive win."I was trusting his (Muzumdar's) decisions — be it sending Shubha (Satheesh) at one-down in the first innings or whatever ideas he gave in bowling, like the first 40 minutes were important today, the idea was to put them (England) in early and utilise the morning conditions," she said."His experience really helped us and it also gave me time to decide what was the best for the team," Harmanpreet added. She said India were able to execute all their plans and set the tone with their fielding, which proved decisive for the hosts as they now prepare to take on Australia in another one-off Test next week."Everything went according to the plan. We got the score that we wanted and the bowlers did a good job, both medium pacers and spinners knew their plans and performed accordingly," she said."The biggest positive was our fielding, especially in a long game when you have to field for 90 overs (in a day) it is very important to maintain the energy. We managed to set the tone with our fielding,” Harmanpreet added. She said that India relied heavily on their batting experience in the first innings to formulate bowling and fielding plans, which saw England being shot out for 136 and 131 in the two innings."We do not have much experience playing Test cricket to determine what sort of field placements can help where. The more you bat, the more you would understand what fields to set for your bowlers," Harmanpreet said."The credit (also) goes to the bowlers, whatever fields they were given they bowled according to that. Your job becomes easier when your bowlers can bowl in the right spots," she added.Harmanpreet praised India debutant Shubha for her 69-run knock in the first innings while again mentioning Muzumdar's role in it."Shubha gave us a very good start — that was also our coach's decision, during the practice game at the NCA, he saw her batting and taking the game ahead," she said."He said, 'if we can send her at one-down she can give us a solid start' and she did it the way we were expecting from her," Harmanpreet added. The India skipper said there would be no change in India's approach in the one-off Test against Australia from December 21-24 at the Wankhede Stadium next week."The wicket (at Wankhede) is a little different to this one. We have two to three days to train and see how the pitch is and accordingly we can take the decisions. But we will go with the same approach — we will look to win," she said.Harmanpreet heaped praise on bowling coach Troy Cooley, saying that Indian bowlers have a lot of trust on the former Australia and England men's team coach."Whenever we get an opportunity to work with him, he motivates us always, especially the bowlers, which areas to bowl and their line and lengths," Harmanpreet said."The bowlers also trust him and his decisions. Whatever decisions he is taking for them, they are trusting him and they are able to execute the plans he is making for them," she added."You need a person you can trust — especially a coach — and they are trusting his ideas and plans," Harmanpreet said. The Indian women's cricket team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur thrashed England in some style in Navi Mumbai on Saturday, setting a world record in the process. Boosted by Deepti Sharma's match haul of nine wickets, India beat England by 347 runs. This is the biggest margin of win (in terms of runs) in the history of women's Tests.  The previous best was Sri Lanka's 309-run win over Pakistan in Colombo in 1998. The win was also Indian women's team's first over England at home.It was also India's first win over England at home in 15 Tests, having beaten them in away games twice in 2014, giving them a big boost ahead of the one-off Test against Australia starting next week.!Rajeshwari Gayakwad takes the final wicket as #TeamIndia beat England by 347 runs in the only Test in Navi Mumbai.Fantastic all-round performance #INDvENG pic.twitter.com/vNxqYw9CrL— BCCI Women (@BCCIWomen) December 16, 2023Talking about the match, Deepti Sharma played the enforcer's role to perfection for the second time in as many days as the dominant India Women scripted a historic 347-run victory over England on the third day of the one-off Test on Saturday. India set in motion the hunt for triumph while declaring their second innings closed at the overnight score of 186 for 6, leaving England to climb a huge mountain of 479 runs in their second innings. The Indian bowlers led by off-spinner Deepti Sharma (4/32) and pacer Pooja Vastrakar (3/23) then bundled out England for 131 to celebrate a victory which now stands as the biggest in terms of runs in the history of women's Test cricket.Over the course of the last three days the Indians did not show any rust of not having played Test cricket in two years, and a first at home after nine years, while being at their ruthless best. But for all that slew of records, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side should thank Deepti (8-2-32-4) who was in her elements after that sensational 5 for seven in the first innings, as England lacked gumption to fight even on a pitch that appeared to be far more gentle.India did not have to wait for long for the first breakthrough this morning. It came in the form of Tammy Beaumont (17) with pacer Renuka Singh moving the ball in from outside the off to knock down her off-stump.England sunk deeper after suffering twin blows in Vastrakar's first over. Sophie Dunkley (15) played one straight into the hands of substitute Harleen Deol at gully.Vastrakar then dealt England a body blow when she cleaned up first-innings star Nat Sciver-Brunt for a first-ball duck, getting the ball to nip back in and passing it through between the bat and the pad.India also wasted two DRS reviews in haste - one each against Heather Knight and Danni Wyatt - but did not have to work too hard for the third wicket. An on-song Vastrakar had one nipping away after pitching to find an outside edge off Knight's bat, as Yastika Bhatia did the rest behind the stumps. Knight made a 20-ball 21 with four boundaries.England's misery continued when Wyatt edged a delivery to the first slip for Deepti's first wicket in the innings after making 12.Deepti then had Amy Jones (5) pulling one straight to short midwicket, and in her seventh over of the innings, the 26-year-old hit the timber twice to dismiss Kate Cross (16) and Lauren Filer (0).While Deepti narrowly missed taking 10 wickets in the game to become the first Indian Women's player to do so, Rajeshwari Gayakwad (2/20) enjoyed some success. The left-arm spinner had her first success in the form of Sophie Ecclestone (10) when the batter went for a sweep and missed to connect, while Lauren Bell (8) was caught by Jemimah Rodrigues at silly point for the final wicket of the game.It was a perfect outing for India also given that all their debutants in the game - Shubha Satheesh, Rodrigues and Renuka - tasted success, but there also was a dampener in the form of Shubha missing the action on the second and the third day owing to a fractured finger..With PTI inputsTopics mentioned in this article

The women's cricket team took the opening day honours in the one-off Test against England in Navi Mumbai on Thursday. Four batters scored half-centuries as India finished the day on 410/7 in 94 overs. India captain Harmanpreet Kaur also could have scored a half-century but a bizarre run out cut short her innings. India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur began with a sweep shot and looked in rich vein of form, but her bat got stuck in the ground while completing a run and Dani Wyatt's throw ended her stay.Harmanpreet walked back to the dressing room having scored an 81-ball 49 with six fours, but more importantly, she and Yastika Bhatia (66) put on 116 runs for the fifth wicket, which is the second-highest stand for India in the format. And again Harmanpreet Kaur gets out similar fashion...#HarmanpreetKaur #INDvENG pic.twitter.com/lX4QZLnYAl— Ajay Ahire (@Ajayahire_cric) December 14, 2023Debutants Shubha Satheesh (69) and Jemimah Rodrigues (68) made fine half-centuries as India's ultra-aggressive approach with the bat took them to a massive 410 for 7 at stumps on Day 1 of their one-off women's Test against England on Thursday.Talking about the match, Playing their first Test in nearly two years, and their maiden red-ball game on home soil in nine years, India rarely took the foot off the pedal on a batting-friendly surface at the DY Patil Stadium, garnering nearly five runs per over. The 24-year-old Shubha stood tall with a 76-ball 69 studded with 13 boundaries, displaying immaculate footwork and impeccable reading of the line and length to score her runs at a strike rate of nearly 91.Shubha became the 12th India batter to score a fifty on debut, but she could not convert it into a century, which would have made her the first from the country to make a ton in her maiden appearance. She departed when Sophie Ecclestone (1/85) had her caught by Nat Sciver-Brunt.Jemimah too produced a knock befitting her calibre, smacking 11 fours during her 99-ball stay. The young batter looked good for a three-figure score but played one on to her wickets off Lauren Bell (2/64).Shubha and Jemimah were instrumental in setting the tone for the hosts' domination after the team appeared to be stuttering following a brisk start, adding 115 runs for the third wicket to enter the record books. The partnership between the duo is now the second-highest in Test cricket for the third wicket. With PTI inputsTopics mentioned in this article

England Women's captain Heather Knight said the one-off Test against India starting in Navi Mumbai on Thursday will be a ‘huge unknown' for both the teams and approaching the game with the right mindset will be crucial. Indian women's outfit has not lost a Test — at home since 1995 and away since 2006 — will offer a massive challenge to the visitors, but the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side has not played red-ball cricket for the last two years. However, Knight did not read too much into the non-familiarity factor.“I think it is a huge unknown for both the teams. Obviously, playing multi-format for the Indian girls as well, they have not really done it here for a long time. So yes, it's hugely exciting any time we get to don the whites,” Knight told the media ahead of England's training session on Wednesday.England will be hitting the milestone 100th Tests but the skipper was not aware of the record.“I had no idea, actually. That is quite a cool stat. I think playing a Test match in India is (in the) bucket list for any cricketer and it's really cool that we get the opportunity to do that,” she replied.“I absolutely love playing Test cricket. I've got some of the best memories in an England shirt playing in the whites. (It is) super cool that we get to play here and it's going to be a real tough challenge and one the team is really excited for,” she said.Knight acknowledged that there will be some anxiety in the camp but would draw inspiration from the quick turnaround between the Test and T20I series last year.“It is a really quick turnaround and we do not play Test cricket very often. Naturally, there's bound to be more anxiety and worry and stress around the group just because it's purely something we don't play very often,” she said.“But we have done it before. We did it in 2022 in Canberra where we had two days to prep after the T20 series because of the condensed nature of the series due to COVID. We have talked about having done it before and in my experience getting your mindset is really important.Knight emphasised on having the right mindset as there was only a three-day gap between the conclusion of the recent T20I series and this match.“You can't change your game and prep too much in two days. It's just getting clear on how you want to go about things, how you want to play, how you're going to score runs, how you're going to take wickets and being in the right spot and trusting that you'll adapt out there,” she said.“There's obviously little fine-tuning you can do and we've had a group of players that have only been in the Test squad as well that have been focused purely on red-ball crickets, that's been quite handy." Knight indicated that England would be tempted to pick an extra bowler given the hot and humid conditions.“You are still backing your best cricketers to adapt to any conditions but, obviously, the heat and the humidity brings in the option of playing another bowler. That is the sort of discussion we are having around — (to have) an extra bowler or a batter. We will probably go towards an extra bowler,” she said. With the four-day Tests meaning 100 overs to be bowled per day, Knight said it will force the teams to be more proactive in pushing for a result. “We might have to accelerate the game artificially a little bit. In four days, you have to force the result a little bit more,” she said.England have lost three and drawn five Tests since their last win in January 2014 and Knight said her team is ‘desperate' to change that.“(We are) desperate to win a Test match. It feels like a long time since we have done that as an England side. We have had a lot of draws and we are working towards how we want to play, and if we do that, hopefully, we will come out with a very nice result,” she said.(This story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is auto-generated from a syndicated feed.)Topics mentioned in this article

Without hiding her desire to see more Tests being played in women's cricket space, captain Harmanpreet Kaur on Wednesday admitted that India will have to play a lead role to make it a reality through consistent performances. After a gap of nearly nine years, India will be playing a Test at home when they take on England in a one-off match at the DY Patil Stadium. India's last Test at home took place in November 2014 against South Africa at Mysore. “Talking about women's cricket, it is improving day-by-day In India. A lot of people are coming to watch the match which we saw in the last T20Is,” Kaur told the media on the eve of the match.“Everyone in the world...they want to play in India. In India, things are changing quickly when it comes to cricket. A lot of people are extending their love and we are also trying to improve. We have an opportunity to take women's cricket as high as we can.“I know that a lot hinges on the Indian cricket team when it comes to women's cricket. The way the approach is changing in India concerning women's cricket, obviously, we have a lot in our hands,” Kaur added. With India making a return to the Test arena after September 2021, Kaur said as players they desire to appear in more long-format matches but the administrators have to make the final call.“As players we want to play more and more Test games. It is ICC and (the) board's call to take up,” she said.Kaur said she was feeling better after twisting her foot in the third T20I against England.“There was a little bit of soreness but I am feeling better now,” Kaur said.Kaur said the switch between white and the red ball formats, given there was only a three-day break between the T20Is and the Test, would be challenging for the players.“I know, after (playing) white ball cricket it will be a little challenging. The bowling unit got 10-15 days to prepare. They understood how the red ball behaves. As batting and bowling units we have tried to cover up as much as we could,” she said.Kaur said changing the mindset quickly would be beneficial.“We want to play positive cricket and that is something that we have discussed in the team meeting as well. It is all about (the) mind game.We cannot keep thinking that we played a Test match two years ago and some girls are new in the side. The only change is that the (colour of) the ball has changed but the approach will be the same,” she said."The field placements and bowling can be attacking and we have discussed about winning the sessions too. Hopefully, whatever we have prepared in the last two days, we will be able to execute it in the middle,” she said.Kaur admitted to feeling ‘butterflies in the stomach' as this will be the first time she would be leading the country in Tests.“Butterflies are always there, no matter how much you have played. There is always excitement and nervousness when you go to the ground. When you play one ball, you get totally involved in the game,” she said.“(The) last Test I missed because of injury and this time there is an opportunity to lead the team. The talk has been about being positive and playing with excitement,” Kaur added. With domestic stalwart Amol Muzumdar in charge as head coach, Kaur said his message to the players has been simple — stick with their respective games.“The best thing he said was, go with your best batting style and don't think about changing it because it is red-ball cricket,” she said.“If you are an aggressive batter, play aggressively. If you like to build your innings, then do that. You need not think about too many things,” she added.(This story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is auto-generated from a syndicated feed.)Topics mentioned in this article

After an underwhelming effort in the T20Is, Harmanpreet Kaur-led India will now shift to a format in which they have an undeniable edge over England, and a seasoned spin attack will be their primary weapon to maintain that advantage as the one-off women's Test between them will pan out over four days from Thursday. History, an unavoidable part of sport, offers a large slice of comfort to India as they have lost only one Test to England in 14 matches since their rivalry started in 1986 and Harmanpreet, who is leading India in Tests for the first time, would want to keep that proud record intact. Indian women's last appearance against Heather Knight's England had ended in a draw at Bristol in June 2021. Mandhana made a first-innings 78 while a young Shafali Verma was the top-performer with 96 and 63.But the Test starting on the morrow also has another significance as it marks the arrival of a double bonanza for Indian women's cricket.Given the lack of Test cricket in women's circuit a perennial debate point, Indians would not be complaining as they have two Tests lined up in the span of 10 days. After their assignment against England at the DY Patil Stadium, Indians will face the indomitable Australians at the Wankhede Stadium from December 21-24 in a one-off Test.India's last appearance in the longest format was also against the Aussies in September 2021. They drew that away Test in Carrara and Smriti Mandhana was the star of that game with scores of 127 and 31.However, England have a more recent experience of playing Test cricket. An exhilarating contest at Nottingham in June saw England take the fight to the Australians riding on a sensational 208 in the first innings by Tammy Beaumont but the hosts could not prevent an 89-run loss.India would want to add to that count of defeats and they are well-prepared too.The home side has bolstered the spin attack, including Bengal's left-arm spinner Saika Ishaque, who has had a successful year so far making her debut for Mumbai Indians and finishing as one of the highest wicket-takers (15) in the Women's Premier League (WPL).For someone who has the knack of taking wickets in heap while keeping tight lines, Ishaque also made her T20I debut in the series against England and took three wickets in the final game to help India register a consolation win.Karnataka's left-handed opening batter Shubha Satheesh is also among the new faces after impressing in the four-day practice matches in Bangalore during the senior team's camp.Among the batters, Jemimah Rodrigues and Harleen Deol are yet to have an experience of Test cricket while one-Test-old Yastika Bhatia might get the nod ahead of Richa Ghosh for the wicket-keeper's role.India have seamer Renuka Singh Thakur return to the squad and given her exploits with the new ball in the recent T20Is, the team will hope for similar returns. In spin, India have experienced campaigners in Sneh Rana and Deepti Sharma, which might keep Ishaque waiting in the wings. For England, Emma Lamb was withdrawn owing to an injury with batter Maia Bouchier and Kirstie Gordon coming into the squad. But the visitors will hope for a productive outing from the experienced Nat Sciver-Brunt, Knight, Danni Wyatt, Kate Cross and Sophie Ecclestone. The visitors have an extra motivation going into the game as it will be their 100th (completed) Test, given that their only win over India in14 Tests came in 1995 at Jamshedpur, when they won by a narrow margin of two runs.Squads: India Women's: Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Smriti Mandhana (vc), Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma, Yastika Bhatia (wk), Richa Ghosh (wk), Sneh Rana, Shubha Satheesh, Harleen Deol, Saika Ishaque, Renuka Singh, Titas Sadhu, Meghna Singh, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Pooja Vastrakar.England Women's: Tammy Beaumont, Lauren Bell, Alice Capsey, Kate Cross, Charlie Dean, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Filer, Bess Heath (wk), Amy Jones (wk), Heather Knight (c), Emma Lamb, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Danielle Wyatt.Topics mentioned in this article
