Legislative and Executive Action

1. Bill  H.R. 8774: FAMILIES Act was introduced very recently on November 18th, 2020. 

2. This bill originated in the house of representatives, and since it was introduced so recently, it has not passed either house.

3. This bill’s purpose is to protect the [expected] parents of minor children and other caregivers from incarceration as long as those individuals would be better off in a rehabilitation center or something of the sort. This bill could potentially help many families stay together (like in the name), but could also potentially let criminals commit more crimes without people knowing.

4. This bill is being sponsored by the democratic party, more specifically by the representative from Washington’s 7th district,  Pramila Jayapal.  The current senate is a Republican majority, so this bill will most likely not pass.

5. This bill was assigned to the House Judiciary committee.

6. I would encourage representatives to vote no on this bill. Altough keeping families together seems like a good idea in theory, I just dont think that it will work in practice. People who are charged with crimes and are arrested should be punished for their crimes, This bill may work out for some felons, but I think that most will just take advantage of the system, and commit more crimes.

7. The Department of Justice manages the criminal justice system in the United States.

8. The Department of Justice’s (DOJ) mission statement is “ To enforce the law and defend the interests of the United States according to the law; to ensure public safety against threats foreign and domestic; to provide federal leadership in preventing and controlling crime; to seek just punishment for those guilty of unlawful behavior; and to ensure fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans.” This statement relates to my civic action issue because the DOJ wants to ensure that people are safe and responsible in regards to the laws.

9. The secretary for the Department of Justice is William Barr. Mr. Barr is very qualified for his position, as he has been serving in the government for many years. He previously worked in the CIA and as the Attorney General/Secretary as a member of the republican party since 2019.

10. There is a program called the  Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Program. This program is very very important to the success of police officers. This program gives access to mental health resources to cops within their precincts. This would mean that cops would be in better states of mid while handling reports, criminals, and other things, reducing the chances of any further police brutality cases.

Where we are: July 15, 2024

Both Houses of Congress are effectively adjourned for the next few weeks. (Congress no longer adjourns in order to block the President from making recess appointments. Instead a member of each House must come to the floor every three days for a Pro Forma session.) Today is the opening of the Republican National Convention. It will close on Thursday. From July 26-Aug 11, it's the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The Democratic National Convention will be August 19-22. During this time, members of the House of Representatives are under a "District Work Period." How they go about that is their prerogative. With that in mind, I'll be taking a break from regularly updating this blog until we have something more. Here is the rundown of where each of the 12 bills are:

H.R.8774 – To amend title 18, United States Code, to divert certain parents of minor children, expectant parents, and other caregivers from incarceration and into comprehensive programs providing resources, services, and training to those individuals and their families.
