[ad_1] India is committed to decarbonise the steel sector in alignment with net-zero emission intensity target by 2070.To mark this, as a historic milestone in India’s journey towards low-emission steel, H D Kumaraswamy, Union Minister of Steel & Heavy Industries, unveiled the Taxonomy of Green Steel for India during an event held at Vigyan Bhavan, on 12th December 2024 in the presence of Shri Bhupathi Raju Srinivasa Varma, Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries, Officers of Steel Ministry, representatives from other concerned Ministries, CPSUs, Steel industry players, Think Tanks, Academia and some foreign representatives in India including a delegation of European Union. Globally, there is no commonly accepted definition of green steel; India is the first nation to release the Taxonomy of Green Steel. H D Kumaraswamy, Union Minister of Steel expressed that the release of the Green Steel Taxonomy for India marks not only a significant milestone for the Ministry of Steel but also for our collective mission of transitioning toward a low-carbon economy. The release of the Taxonomy of Green Steel marks a crucial step in advancing the National Mission on Green Steel. Bhupathi Raju Srinivasa Varma, Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries, said the launch of the Green Steel Taxonomy represents a transformative framework in steel production that will help define green steel, foster innovation, and create a market for low-carbon products in India. Secretary Steel Sandeep Poundrik highlighted that the adoption of Taxonomy of the Green Steel is not an option, it is a mandate to adopt this towards achieving the environmental sustainability target. This will be challenging for the Indian steel sector. However, the Ministry, with the help of all the industry stakeholders, will achieve the taxonomy of green steel to reduce the emission intensity of 2.2 tCO2 per tonne by 2030, ensuring global competitiveness and continued growth. The salient features of green steel taxonomy – “Green Steel” shall be defined in terms of percentage greenness of the steel, which is produced from the steel plant with CO2 equivalent emission intensity less than 2.2 tonnes of CO2e per tonne of finished steel (tfs). The greenness of the steel shall be expressed as a percentage, based on how much the steel plant’s emission intensity is lower compared to the 2.2 t-CO2e/tfs threshold. Based on the greenness, the Green steel shall be rated as follows: Five-star green-rated steel: Steel with emission intensity lower than 1.6 t-CO2e/tfs. Four-star green-rated steel: Steel with emission intensity between 1.6 and 2.0 t-CO2e/tfs. Three-star green-rated steel: Steel with emission intensity between 2.0 and 2.2 t-CO2e/tfs. Steel with emission intensity higher than 2.2 t-CO2e/tfs shall not be eligible for green rating. The threshold limit for defining the star rating of Green Steel shall be reviewed every three years. The scope of emissions shall include Scope 1, Scope 2, and limited Scope 3, up to finished steel production. Scope 3 emissions shall include agglomeration (including sintering, pellet making, coke making), beneficiation, and embodied emissions in purchased raw materials and intermediary products, but shall not include upstream mining, downstream emissions and transportation emissions, both within and outside the gates of a steel plant. The National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology (NISST) shall serve as the nodal agency for measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) as well as for issuing the greenness certificates and star ratings for the steel. The certificate shall be issued on yearly basis (financial year). In case the steel plants opt for MRV more frequently, then the certificate may be issued more than once in a year as per the requirement. In addition to the release of taxonomy, stakeholder consultation on draft National Mission on Green Steel (NMGS) and draft Green Steel Public Procurement Policy (GSPPP) was also conducted during the event.
The Ministry has assured that the suggestions and inputs received from stakeholders will be reviewed and integrated in finalising the NMGS and GSPPP. [ad_2] Source link

Bengaluru: Kannada actor and politician Ambareesh has passed away here at a private hospital due to cardiac arrest, sources have said. He was 66. A former Union minister, Ambareesh was rushed to the hospital after he complained of breathing trouble and passed away on Saturday night, officials at the hospital said. “Ambareesh was brought to hospital around 9 pm and he passed away because of cardiac arrest,” Vikram Hospital officials told TBT, NNA and DIGITAL NEWS INFO.
According to the hospital spokesman, Ambareesh was found unresponsive at his residence and the resuscitation efforts were initiated there and continued en route while he was shifted to the hospital. “Despite all aggressive resuscitation efforts, he could not be revived and was declared deceased at 2215 hrs,” the spokesman added. Ambareesh, a three-time Lok Sabha member and also a former State minister, is survived by actress Sumalatha and son Abishek. Born as Malavalli Huchche Gowda Amarnath on May 29, 1952, Ambareesh popularly known as a “rebel star” has acted in over 200 films in a more than four-decade long movie career with a fan following of his own at the peak of his popularity. Ambareesh had not been keeping well in recent years and was hospitalised frequently. In 2014, he was shifted to the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore. Entering the movie world through film “Nagarahavu” (king cobra), directed by veteran late Puttanna Kannagal in 1972, Ambareesh had carved a niche for himself in the Kannada film industry, particularly as an “angry” man, earning the title “rebel star”. Beginning his film career in antagonistic roles, he later emerged on his own to become a hero. Ambareesh also had a successful career in politics having been an MLA, a Lok Sabha member and a former minister at the state and central levels. He was in the Janata Dal, the JDS and the Congress in his political career that took a hit when he was asked to resign as minister for housing during the previous Siddaramaiah government. Ambareesh had served as the Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting from 2006-2007 under former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh but had quit the post over the issue of formation of the Cauvery water dispute tribunal. He has won several state government film awards and was bestowed with the honorary doctorate by the Dharwad University. As the news of his death spread, several political leaders including Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy and a host of film personalities visited Vikram Hospital. A large number of emotional fans and followers also descended at the hospital with some saying that they became “orphans” without their “Ambareesh Anna”. Expressing shock over the demise, Kumaraswamy said Ambaresh’s death “an era of love and affection in Kannada fim industry has ended”. “He was a rebel who was loved by all. He has carved a unique place in both politics and films,” said Kumaraswamy, who himself is a film producer. Ambreesh had spoken to a couple of Kannada news channels earlier on Saturday, expressing shock and grief over a bus mishap in Mandya, his home district, in which 30 people were killed. Speaking to reporters after visiting the hospital, Kumaraswamy said, the state government has decided to observe a three-day state mourning as a mark of respect for Ambareesh whose funeral would be held with full state honour. Calling Ambareesh “Ajatashatru”, the Chief Minister appealed to his fans to maintain calm and extend cooperation so that no hindrance is caused to public at large and the funeral related formalities happen peacefully. “I can understand your pain, tomorrow morning around 7:30 or 8 his body will be kept at Kanteerava Stadium for paying last respects,” he said. Recalling Ambreesh’s bonding with Mandya and Mysuru region, Kumaraswamy said special buses will be arranged from there for his fans and friends to pay their last respects here in Bengaluru. Ambareesh was often referred to as “Mandya da Gandu” (Man of Mandya). “We have to build a memorial for him here. Keeping this in view the family has decided to perform his last rites in Bengaluru,” Kumaraswamy said while noting his contribution to state, films and politics.
