Asian Glow - Stalled Flutes, Means
(Noise Pop, Indie Rock, Emo)
Gyungwon Shin's latest release as Asian Glow expands his sound with light orchestral touches, longer and bigger songs, and hints of genres like folk and drum and bass that heighten the intense emotions his music always brings out. Stalled Flutes, Means isn't all that different from his past work, but it's just distinct enough to be a wonderful step forward.
☆☆☆☆
When a style starts to get big, it's easy to wonder how long until it starts to homogenize. It happened with grunge back in the 90s, indie rock in the early 2000s, trap in the 2010s - there always seems to come a breaking point where the number of artists playing off a particular sound exceeds the number of them doing something exciting with it, and it can begin to feel like there's too much of the same going around. Recently, that's been a question going around the online emo and rock scenes, the breakthroughs artists like Parannoul and STOMACH BOOK had that year signaling a new wave of indie rock artists using the accessibility of DAW's and electronic production to make music that was endlessly creative and full of heart, but with that comes the worry that one day it'll begin to plateau. As part of that group, Gyungwon Shin, better known as Asian Glow, ensures that time won't come around soon with his latest album Stalled Flutes, Means, expanding on the murky emo sound he cultivated on last year's Cull Ficle with light orchestral touches, longer and bigger songs, and hints of genres like folk and drum and bass that heighten the intense emotions his music always brings out. Stalled Flutes, Means hits the same marks as Shin's previous projects, but the slight changes he brings to it make the album its own beast entirely. With only one single for the album, Stalled Flutes, Means' sound was kept quite a mystery, making the exciting new twists on Shin's usual hot-blooded noise pop even more exciting. Still grounded in electronic production while relying on the structures and sounds of shoegaze, ramshackle indie rock and a post-rock sense of tension and release, Stalled Flutes, Means hits hard while leaving space in between for moments of atmosphere and warmth. Lit Lips the Bracken is the quietest he's ever opened any project of his thus far, icy pianos spinning around fuzzy synths and distorted guitars that aren't heavy as much as they are a blanket of sound wrapped around you. Once the song finally does open up, it's such a complete release of energy that Shin then sustains throughout the rest of the album's 12 tracks: the sharpness cut of Sneezing: Seasonal Creators across your ears as he lets everything loose for an entire four minutes, the softer rumble of Station Blue / Broiled Wrist that makes for one of the album's most intriguing and spellbinding tracks, the unexpected incorporation of drum and bass into Curled From the Roots Pt. 2 that moves his music along faster than ever - even if things are a little less wild than they were on Cull Ficle, Shin's commitment to letting these songs drill deep into your mind rather than try and hit an immediate dopamine reserve works wonders in making Stalled Flutes, Means one of the most rewarding rock albums to come out this year. It can be a bit samey at times - nearly every song here has a softer section right at the tail-end before one final massive chorus, and structurally they don't differ all that much - but when the music sounds this great, it's hard to have many complaints about that. The album's more layered and rich sound also lends itself to Shin's mood in songwriting and themes, slowly stepping out of the deep depression Cull Ficle carried and learning to reconcile those feelings with the beauty and love he can experience, too. His writing often relies on short verses that don't always connect to the ones that came before it, When Summer surrounding its short scenes of intimacy ("Woke up early / See each other from the bed / Holding, stuck clothes stay same / Yet nothing’s around") with glitchy electronics and swarms of guitar that push him back into feelings of self-hatred and sadness he tries to pull himself out of ("Beat all the thoughts of caring myself / No reason to mourn from now / Daylight sets down"). Stalled Flutes, Means' cathartic builds and huge, rapturous instrumentation serves not as an escape from his feelings, but as an extension of them, toxic thoughts realized in the anxious drones and soaring guitars of the nine-minute highlight Look Close, Nose the Reflection or burning anger towards himself in the fiery snare attacks on Sneezing: Seasonal Creators. You have to listen in for the little instrumental details that make his songwriting hit extra hard here - how Lit Lips the Bracken grows more intense as Shin's writing gets more defeated and discontent with the world, or how Ashpit Nowhere leans on his older music's sound while incorporating some light strings that match the story of mindlessness and repetition he sings on - but there's more than enough developments on his form here to ensure that Stalled Flutes, Means pushes him forward as an artist. Stalled Flutes, Means proves Asian Glow has the longevity to make the music last, smart enough to know how to work new ideas around an established form in a way that feels exciting and new. Anyone looking for all the things they've loved about Shin's music in the past will find it here without worry, but it's not a stagnation in his sound at all when so many new elements are being added into the mix. He's already proved himself a great artist in the past, and now he's shown that his music has no boundaries or limitations when he chooses to take them away. He's more introspective, more personal here than the more jumbled collection of intense, heartbreaking emotions Cull Ficle brought to the table. His music's leader is catharsis and emotional release, and there's an endless number of ways he can express that. With Stalled Flutes, Means, he has uncovered only one of them, and did everything he could with it to the fullest extent.

The Emo Collab of the Year
Weatherglow released by complete and utter surprise in the middle of last month. The album is the first time Weatherday and Asian Glow, two highly regarded indie darlings in their own right, have collaborated. The result not only meets the high expectations set by the pedigree of both artists, but exceeds it. Weatherglow is definitely not just a split EP with each artist pooling together songs that couldn’t quite constitute a project on their own. Instead, the record gives us a perfect synthesis of the best of what each artist brings to the table, the result of which is one of the best projects put out by either of them.
Weatherday, also known as Sputnik, first gathered critical acclaim back in 2019 with their self-titled Weatherday in 2019. Their noisy lo-fi sound and emo stylings gathered serious critical acclaim for the project. They also have numerous other projects, including Lola’s Pocket PC and Five Pebbles. Asian Glow, aka Gyungwon Shin, has been making music since as early as 2015 as a member of various punk outfits in their city of Seoul. However, it wasn’t until last year that he would release his landmark emo/shoegaze album Cull Ficle, again garnering critical attention. You may have heard them on last year’s split Downfall of the Neon Youth which also featured the excellent and wildly popular Parannoul and sonhos tomam conta.
This new album from the two of them is the perfect display of both of their strengths. Weatherday has always had a knack for great melodies and great big noisy soundscapes. The opening track “Melt a Bed'' is an excellent example of this. The song begins with a cute little vocal intro, “Let’s go, Weatherglow!” before transitioning into a roaring cascade of guitar and synth sounds. From there, the song goes through two more movements, all in the span of under 4 minutes. If that sounds like it happens at a blistering pace, it's because it does, but Weatherday and Asian Glow both seem to know exactly how long each segment should be, ending right as the listener gets their fill.
Asian Glow, on the other hand, has always had a very cool sound profile, with luscious guitars and gorgeous synths, inventive song structures (as demonstrated above), and the ability to write fantastic hooks. Its these hooks that really benefit the sound presented by Weatherday, whose noisy sound can prove abrasive and potentially challenging to listen to. Take the song “Late Time Stroll” for instance, a song that sports a gentle opening guitar jingle before the drums and vocals make a gentle little entrance. But then, the guitar picks up that signature fuzz and distortion, and Asian Glow’s vocals pick up a wonderful anxious strain. The song then ramps up into a cavalcade of beautiful noise accentuated by melodies that won’t let you go.
Throughout the album’s brisk 24-minute runtime, Weatherday and Asian Glow continuously wow with an unending stream of catchy noise-pop bangers, all adorned with the signature anxiety-riddled lyrics of this current emo sound. However, each song manages to be its own delightful little microcosm of the best of what the current scene has to offer. Weatherglow represents the best work of two of the current emo scene’s best artists.
Take a listen here!
