I’m hoping to learn more about my engagement ring.

The seller from PA stated they found the ring at an estate sale. I’ve been doing some research based on the markings inside the ring (last photo). What I’ve learned is: 18K gold, dated 1898/1899, from Birmingham UK. Then, there are the initials of the maker which reads “J•H”. I can’t find any conclusive data about these initials but I’m guessing a jewelry company.

My partner will be bringing the ring into a jeweler soon to verify if the ring is in fact 18K gold with three diamonds. The center looks like a diamond but the two side stones are questionable. Perhaps, the old cut of the diamond affects the appearance of the diamond in a way I am not familiar with or perhaps they are white sapphire. I really have no idea. My thoughts are to replace the two side stones with pinkish rubies to follow the victorian gypsy ring trend this ring belongs to.

Gypsy Rings

Gypsy rings were very popular during the late Victorian era, especially between 1885 - 1900. This was a time in jewellery making where jewellers favoured diamonds and gemstones such as sapphires and emeralds. This stone was made the primary feature, with a thick band which were worn by both men and women. And years down the line they are seen as a popular choice for alternative engagement rings.

In a gypsy ring setting, the stone appears to sit flush with the surrounding metal. This provides more protection to the gemstone from damage and everyday wear. Wealthy Victorian women loved this style of ring, as when travelling, they feared bandits might steal their jewels and it would make it harder to take the gem out of this setting.

Excellent Victorian three-stone gyspy ring set with a blue sapphire flanked by two chunky old cut diamonds. Crafted in solid 18 karat gold, the stones rest in rub-over settings: two .16ct old Euro diamonds and a natural .36ct blue sapphire. A partially legible inscription inside the band reads 'R.E.J. to E.M.J. Febr.. 6... 189...' suggesting it was made and first exchanged during the final decade of the 19th century.

Con: The regret is that he never allowed himself to fall in love completely. He always stopped himself from falling in love, and he would have been a great love, Izzy, but the couldn't ever release himself enough to do that. So I think that's a great regret, and I think it's made more extreme by seeing Ed falling in love and how that complicated as it is, changed Ed. So, yeah, that he wasn't able to fall in love is Izzy's great regret.

Gypsy: Now you've just broken everybody's hearts.

Kristian: Yeah. Everyone's crying all over the world.

Con: All over the world. I can heart them sobbing. I will write a book called The Emerald Ring.

Con: There is a tattoo that none of you ever saw.

Kristian: I love that.

Con: Which I will.. which Debs did brilliant. My makeup designer, Debs. We came up with the name of somebody in Izzy's life - that was all attached to the emerald ring - and we had it tattooed on his wrist every day with some cut marks, scabs, scars. And we were toying with the idea, revealing it towards the scene with Izzy's death, but we never got to do it. But that was the only tattoo you never saw. That and the lashes on his back, which I don't believe you saw very clearly.
