Concussion (2015)
Tumblr media
I'm saying it: Concussion has been unjustly judged. Yes, Will Smith probably took the role in the hopes of bagging himself an Academy Award, but his performance is a good one, and isn’t that what we want to see? Good actors challenging themselves with meaty roles? Combined with an important story that will make you think, can we call it a bad film?
When forensic pathologist Bennet Omalu (Smith) discovers a link between the premature deaths of football players and the injuries they suffered during their careers, he publishes a paper on his observations. Surprisingly, the reception it receives is less than warm.
If we can all be realistic and take a step back, can we admit that America’s love of football has gone a bit far? Yes, it requires enormous amounts of strategy, skill, and training to win and is tremendously entertaining… but it is, in the end, just a game. This film - based on a true story - frequently brings up the idea of religion. Faith is, of course, an important aspect of every person but in film, unless your religious affiliation is tied to the plot it feels like an unnecessary detail; a way to coax like-minded audiences into cheering for the protagonist. Its inclusion in Concussion is a brilliant move. Writer/director Peter Landesman realizes the zeal people have for the sport. It helps us understand Omalu’s distance from this American pastime. While other people look forward to the game on Sunday, he has another destination in mind that morning. He merely points out a link between tragic events and the injuries players suffer during a game. He never suggests that football should be obliterated, but it’s met with the same frightening hostility you'd expect from religious fanatics.
Even if Omalu wasn’t “in the right”, the film would still be entertaining. The characters are well developed and the performances quite strong, particularly from Smith. Omalu is sweet, cheerful, optimistic, well-intentioned, and pitted against such an overwhelming opponent! There’s a tender love story between him and his wife, Prema (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) that helps you care about the man’s personal life and understand his motivations.
On a technical level, the editing and cinematography are smartly done. The way the clips of real-life football injuries are juxtaposed next to each other seems to give them a whole new meaning. Is it subtle? No. Does it need to be? I don't think so. The findings make it pretty clear. Then, the last few scenes wrap the film up nicely. They can be interpreted in a few different ways, depending on how you feel about the NFL.
All that said, you can see why the film didn’t score any major award wins. At times, Concussion tries a bit too hard to be grand. It also isn't all that memorable. By no means does that make it bad, it’s just not "so good it’ll change the world good", and that’s what it wanted to be.
Concussion has a fair amount to offer casual audiences, and if you're a fan of the sport it's examining, it will have a tremendous impact on you. If you're scared it will ruin the Superbowl, there's no need to worry. It will merely give you some food for thought. That’s more than enough to recommend it. (On Blu-ray, March 3, 2017)

Thoughts : Fast Color (2019)
Tumblr media
Looking up Black Cinema on streaming services has been a real hit or miss venture.  For every relevant, thought-provoking piece of work, we are given numerous films lumped in simply because the lead or parts of the cast are Black.  While not necessarily incorrect, it is a bit frustrating that films with no issues getting eyes on them tend to take the spots of films that could use Black History Month as an opportunity to step into the spotlight.  That being said, it hasn’t all been frustrating and fruitless, as these searches are how I discover films such as Fast Color.
In the not too distant future, a portion of midwest America is facing a nearly decade long drought due to an absence of rain.  Ruth (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) is a lonesome wanderer with a strange set of undefined supernatural powers, including uncontrollable seizures that trigger massive earthquakes localized around her.  After stealing a car in the wake of one of her earthquakes, Ruth runs into a stranger named Bill (Christopher Denham) who gets her out of a compromising situation with a cop, but Bill quickly reveals that he is actually a scientist who has been tracking Ruth down in hopes of examining her and her powers.  Ruth escapes after a struggle, and eventually, she finds her way back to her childhood home, where her mother Bo (Lorraine Toussaint) and daughter Lila (Saniyya Sidney) live in isolation from the rest of society.  Ruth attempts to right her rocky past with her mother while getting to know the daughter she never got the chance to raise, but as Bill and his team close in on Ruth, the pressure pushes Ruth, Bo and Lila down a powerful path of personal discoveries.
In an era where superhero films have seemingly been the lifeblood of the film industry (up until the unforeseen shutdown, that is), and bigger usually equates to “better”, seeing a more nuanced and realistic take on powered individuals done as a suspense fueled drama is refreshing.  Rather than relying on huge set pieces, digital effects that are the artistic equivalent of a fireworks show and big name actors, we are given real life level family drama with powers as the foundation of the strife, passed down generationally but still manifesting as solo journeys each time.  Outside of Ruth, most of the powers are glorified “parlour tricks” (as Bo states in the film), similar to how the film Looper had “powered” individuals whose greatest strength was floating quarters above the palm.  While this all sounds reductive, having characters that we can relate to rather than diet versions of gods actually provides a strong connective thread between the film and the viewer.
In certain cultures and philosophical disciplines, woman is considered as the Earth, so having Ruth’s powers be deep enough to change the natural makeup seems like a fitting assignment.  The symbolism goes further when one takes into account that Lila alters her plans to isolate herself, instead choosing to satellite Ruth like a moon (even to the point of wearing a shirt with a moon on it in the final third of the film).  Ruth as a protagonist discovering her powers in a world without a cosmic threat also works because the harmony that locks in her powers comes from within.  Before she is able to understand and wield her powers to their fullest capability, she first has to sort out her mind by initially becoming sober, which then allows her to take stock of her trauma-filled past and accept it, which allows her to evolve and move forward.
The set design and B-roll do an excellent job of portraying the bleak circumstances of the cinematic world that is presented.  The color timing does work in this realm as well, keeping us constantly reminded about how scarce water is in the film.  While sparsely used, the special effects stand out in the way that they naturally and seamlessly fit in with the visuals presented.  In terms of pacing, this film knows exactly what it wants to do and how it wants to unfold its information, and in turn, it is not afraid to take its time with seemingly meaningless moments filled with intention.  While not overly prominent, the few music selections that we hear in the film come from quality musicians, and like many other aspects of this film, feel completely natural in their placement.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw dials in post-traumatic stress to fuel her performance, approaching her redemption as a self-imposed Sisyphean task.  Lorraine Toussaint, in a similar manner, harnesses a seemingly ever-existent fear in her role as protector by giving her actions the impression that all will be lost if she falters, while carrying this task with a grace and dignity that shields Lila from the truth.  Speaking of Lila, Saniyya Sidney turns in a performance of a young person wise beyond their years, with a clear picture of where their life needs to go, and an impatience to wait for reality to catch up to their vision.  Christopher Denham, David Strathairn, Levi Lobo and a small handful of others turn in memorable performances in this streamlined cast.
Independent ventures like Fast Color give me faith that all is not lost in the realm of film.  People tend to harp on the lack of originality, or the over-prominence of similar offerings at the box office, but it doesn’t take maximum effort to find films like this one.  For my money’s worth, the impression left will be a lasting one, and I will definitely be recommending this one far and wide.

Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Spoiler here!!!
People be talking about how much they hate Seladon (which I get because I was pissed off at her for the majority of the show as well), but they be speaking from the perspective of halfway through the show, meanwhile (spoiler alert!) I’ve been to the end of the show and lemme tell you all, Seladon becomes the All Maudra that the Gelfling deserve and proves herself 1000 fucking times over, and her sisters don’t even bat an eye which is so amazing because they never stopped loving her, and you can tell that, deep down, she never stopped loving them and when she finally realizes that what the Skeksis are doing is wrong and evil, she comes through in a really BIG way, so, ya know...
Not that I blame y’all for hating her but honestly, back the fuck off! Seladon has issues, as all complex characters do, and she struggles and deals with them in the end and that’s all that really matters.

Movie Review: Beauty and the Beast
The time has finally come! The live-action version of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast has arrived, and we are so excited to share our review with you. Of course, no one will be surprised that we came into this movie heavily biased for numerous reasons.
If, for some reason, you are not familiar with Disney’s 1991 animated feature…I really don’t know what to do with you! You must watch it immediately! Seriously, go watch it, I’ll wait…
Based on an old French fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast is the story of Belle, a bookworm who baffles the residents of her quaint town. Her father Maurice dotes on her, and the town bad boy – Gaston – wants to marry her. Belle has other plans, however.
When Maurice goes missing on the way to a trade fair, Belle sets out to rescue her father. She finds him in a strange castle inhabited by enchanted furniture and a monstrous beast. The audience learns that the beast and his household have been cursed by an Enchantress, and he must love and be loved in return in order to break the spell.
Belle trades her freedom to save her father, and quickly turns life in the cursed castle upside down. Will it be enough, though? Is Belle, the headstrong daughter of an artist, the one who will soften the beast’s heart?

Reason to See:
This updated version of the classic Disney film might just be better than the original. With new songs and a more inclusive cast, what’s not to love?

Reason to Skip:
If you aren’t into musicals, Disney, or basically flawless casting choices, you might want to skip this one.

Is Beauty and the Beast Worth Spending The Price of a Ticket?
YES. In fact, I’ll be spending plenty of my own hard-earned dollars seeing this gem in theaters as many times as possible.
♥♥♥♥♥♥
Tipsy Recommendation:
Grab a dish of grey stuff (or popcorn, I guess) and get ready to fall in love all over again with Belle, the beast, and all your favorite characters (plus some new ones).

Loki 1X05 - Jornada ao Mistério (2021)
Tumblr media
Read the full article
