I'm late to the Queen Charlotte party, but can I just say that Freddie Dennis could have chosen literally any other way to have Reynolds look at Brimsley in the first episode and he went with A FULL SCALE LOOK THE MAN UP AND DOWN, just all soft eyes and playful smirk. This was a pain and a struggle and I am not happy with it, not even remotely, but it’s words, and more than 500 of them, so challenge met, no matter how uninspired I was and how much it is more an explanatory AU-scenario info dump than actual fic. I am not even going to try putting this in the tumblr tag. No one said this would be easy, okay, otherwise it’d be no challenge!

Warnings for pandemic, zombies, and the kind of death that comes with zombies.

It started with Beltaine. People woke up the morning after with sore heads and stiff limbs, nothing unusual about that. And when enough people spent a night engaging in sweaty naked activities outdoors, then some of them were bound to catch a cold, surely.

By the time they heard about it, chatter had changed from an unseasonal outbreak of the cold to an outbreak of a fever that did not care how warm the sun shone on someone, because the people shaking in its grasp would still shiver with cold even as they burned from the inside, and they’d shaken and burned since the day after the fires, two weeks ago.

Geralt didn’t waste time arguing or letting Jaskier say his good-byes; he simply threw him over his shoulder, retrieved Roach from the stable she’d just gotten settled in, and hightailed it out of there as fast as she could carry them. Coughs and fevers spread through humanity every winter, and no one had mentioned death for this particular plague, just the fever, going on and on, but humans did die from diseases, so easily, and Geralt had watched enough of them from the sidelines to know how quickly a seemingly harmless bug could end up putting entire families into graves.

Jaskier for once did not object to Geralt’s insistence they rough it in the woods, avoid roads and people, and make their way across the river before re-entering society. Something about the nature of this illness had emptied the streets and unsettled the man he’d talked to, and that unsettled him. He had seen a plague sweep through Lettenhove when he was a child, and he had no intention of ever again watching carts filled with corpses roll through the streets.

They’d give all settlements a wide berth, move straight north for better pickings rather than meander from place to place for meager backwater picking that would barely cover the cost of staying at what passed for the local inn.

They were camping in a flower-filled meadow near a merrily bubbling crook when the disease changed.

As the moon, full for the first time since Beltaine, crested the sky, Jaskier sat up well into the night and tried his hand at an ode to the way Geralt’s silver hair shone under the stars, the first of the sick stopped shaking. Before the moon had again left the sky, they rose from their beds reached for those who had stood beside them, wiping their brows and praying for their recovery.

And their first understanding of what the fever had turned into came when they let screams for help carry them back to a road and found a caravan of three families trying to fend off a man they first thought mad with rabies, then cursed into unnatural bloodlust and berserkerdom, and then, once Geralt’s sword in his skull had finally felled him and they set about triaging the wounded, heard that he’d been the oldest son of one of the families, returned just the previous day from the south, worn and shaking with both fear and exhaustion from travel and horse ridden to ruin, with warnings of a disease that had gone from a simple fever to a fever that over night burned the souls out of the afflicted and left them with mindless hunger for human flesh.

One other man had not survived the attack, four people had merely been wounded.

As they started to pull luggage off the carts to make space for the injured, Geralt stepped up to the man he’d killed, pulled his sword from his skull and knelt beside the corpse. The dominant smell was that of the fresh blood smeared down his front, but under it he could still make out the dirt of the road and sweat, whether from travel or fever undistinguishable at this point. No magic, none that he could pick up at least. And, faint, faint, a hint of old blood. Following his nose, he pulled back a stained sleeve to reveal a dirtied bandage, come loose and slipped down to the wrist, and, now uncovered, a day-old bite on the man’s forearm, where Geralt himself had been bitten many times when he’d been forced to use his arm as a shield to protect his face and throat.

The man had been afraid, they’d said, and insisted they leave within the hour to outrun the disease.

Geralt stood, eyes flicking to the wounded. Bitten, all four of them. One a child, one just on the cusp of adulthood.

There was no outrunning a disease, that was already coursing through your veins.

As weeks before, Geralt didn’t bother wasting time with explanations. These people were family. Sickness, curse, poison - they would not abandon their own on the word of a witcher, nor would they let him put his steel through their heads.

But Jaskier, mortally human Jaskier, his thin, breakable skin still blessedly whole, did, and on the witcher’s word turned off the road back into the wilderness.

North. North, and no one but each other, no matter the calls, until they’d reach the river.

Ah, I don’t even know where I was going with this. Was I even going anywhere? Not really. I guess sometimes you just have to force the words out of you, and then put them aside and check later of there is something you want to salvage from them. But for all that I do like the idea of a zombie AU, I think starting with an exposition info dump would not be the best way to go.

5e Yuumi the Magical Cat build (and a test of Tumblr formatting)

So I have no idea how this website works but I mostly made this account to post DnD 5e character builds based on characters I like. Ever since the latest UA came out I’ve been ecstatic over the fact that we finally got another Support-based Warlock that isn’t Celestial. The fact that it’s a genie Warlock is awesome and there’s tons of roleplay that can be done with a pocket wish-granting elemental walking around with you... good thing we’re ignoring all that for the sake of B O O K!

Yuumi! To be honest I haven’t played League of Legends in ages but Yuumi was a character who drew my attention immediately because she’s an UwU Kitty-Cat... who had like a 36% win rate on release. She’s better now though! ...Probably. Regardless Yuumi was my immediate thought when I saw the tether mechanic from the latest Warlock UA. Constructing a build for The Magical 7th Item Slot Cat was something on my mind for the longest time, probably because the only other character I could replicate is... what? Io from DOTA?

I got the OK from Tulok the Barbrarian-senpai to make some DnD builds which is why I’m using his format. All these builds will keep away from Homebrew and can all be made on D&D Beyond... as long as your DM allows Unearthed Arcana which this build heavily relies on.

GOALS

Shield, heal, cuddle! - Yuumi is a support, through-and-through. Probably one of the most support-focused supports in the game. While this build will still have good damage output the main focus is on keeping your teammates alive and well.

Book, do something! - Yuumi is a dynamic duo between the cat and the book. Hopefully your DM is okay with you not really having a “patron” and instead having a sentient book fly around instead. I mean, it’s basically just a Hexblade right?

Lost Chapter - Yuumi honestly has a pretty basic kit. Replicating 4 spells is easy as cake in 5e so a lot of this build will be focused on replicating Yuumi’s typical item build as well.

RACE

Well as you can tell Yuumi is clearly a Bugbe-Ah who am I kidding she’s a Tabaxi. You’re welcome to pick whatever race you want but Tabaxi is honestly a good pick for this build. You get an increase to both DEX and CHA, some useful skills (be sure to ward bush!), and probably the most important skill: Feline Agility. Much like Yuumi you don’t want to be caught off-guard so a quick self-use of Zoomies can help you get away from the enemy and back to your team. For your language of choice... is Yordle an option? Halfling is probably the closest you’ll get to Yordles in 5e so just opt for that instead.

ABILITY SCORES

Much like Tulok I’ll be using Standard Array for ease-of-use. Roll for stats if you want but this is a general guideline for where to put your highs and lows.

15; CHARISMA - You’re cute, cuddly, and oh-so snuggly. Yuumi in-lore is an innate spellcaster and that translates into Charisma; helps that this also impacts Persuasion for head scritches.

14; DEXTERITY - Yuumi isn’t the fastest champion in-game (it’s on Book to do the “walking”) but she’s still a cat, and cats are fast. Dexterity affects AC as well as several other useful things.

13; INTELLIGENCE - Your best friend is literally a floating book it’s bound to know something.

12; WISDOM - You’re a smart kitty and you know a thing or two about Yordles... doesn’t stop you from dissing everyone else though.

10; CONSTITUTION - It’s technically in-character to dump Constitution but I don’t recommend it. Intelligence and Wisdom are higher on this list but you don’t really need them - feel free to get some Ruby Crystals.

8; STRENGTH - Here’s something that’s in-character to dump and I do recommend dumping. Strength is almost completely redundant in this build so don’t be afraid to ditch it.

This would be the point array I’d use if I was RPing Yuumi but if I wanted a more functional character I’d go CHA / DEX / CON / (INT / WIS) / STR for my stat spread. But much like in League you’re more than welcome to buy some health boosting items (notably an Amulet of Health) to compensate for bad stats.

BACKGROUND

Yuumi spent most of her time in Nora her master’s hut which would technically make her a Cloistered Scholar? But Sage works better if you’re teaming up with Book. You gain Arcana and History proficiencies which are honestly the two I’d pick for a magic cat that has a sentient Book as a best friend. You also get the Researcher feature which lets you know where to find any information: Book knows everything and can bring you anywhere - ask them to tell you where to go! You also get two languages and... uhhh who synergizes well with Yuumi? ...Yasuo? Is there a monkey language in 5e? Jokes aside just pick whatever language you think will be useful.

THE BUILD

This may come as a surprise but despite the fact that this build was made almost entirely for the sake of using the new UA Warlock patron we’re actually not starting with Warlock! While half of Yuumi’s power comes from Book (who I’d consider the “patron” in this relationship) the other half of her power is innate. Now I could make her a Sorcerer to reflect the magic within her or I could perhaps make her a Wizard to get more value out of Book but I had to ask myself a question: which class in D&D would be the best for a character who regularly insults and sasses other characters and thinks too highly of themselves?

LEVEL 1 - BARD 1

Yes this build is a Bardlock build, and the only reason we’re going Bard first is for the extra music instruments as well as the choice of any skill we want.

Your choice of instrument doesn’t matter much (it’s mildly important for Instruments of the Bard or if you have an Artificer, but other than that don’t worry) but I’m contractually obligated to take a Lyre every time I make a Bard. Other than that you synergize with Yasuo so steal his Flute, and I’ve always been a fan of Pentakill so I’ll take the closest to a guitar. (Lute)

For skills take Acrobatics, Persuasion, and Survival. You’re a cat which means you need to be quick on your feet and are adorable as hecc, and you need some survival instinct when you’re constantly hopping between dimensions. (Truthfully though as a Bard you should be picking skills that your party lacks, though I’d argue that Acrobatics and Persuasion should always be taken to remain “in character.”)

For cantrips take Message to coordinate with your party in team chat and Vicious Mockery; Yuumi is a cat of sass so feel free to diss your local god by calling him a dog. Or alternatively this could be you flaming the enemy team in /all - I won’t judge.

Cure Wounds and Healing Word are absolute musts for any support - in particular Cure Wounds is good for you since you can cast it from wherever your You and Me (tether) target is located. This means that whoever you’re tethered to can get the full value of Cure Wounds instead of you being forced to pop Healing Word instead. Other than that Longstrider lets you replicate Zoomies’ movement speed boost, and you can never go wrong with Featherfall. (The only spells that are really “mandatory” here is Cure Wounds. Maybe Longstrider too. Healing Word is always useful but both it and Featherfall are just suggestions.)

LEVEL 2 - WARLOCK 1

And from Bard we immediately jump to the meat of this build: The Noble Genie Warlock! You get your Collector’s Vessel which hopefully your DM will let be a book with cat-sized portals inside of it?

You also get some cantrips and guess what? Eldrich Blast! Yeah it’s a Warlock build you’re going to take Eldrich Blast. Other than that take Minor Illusion to pull something scary out of Book at the right time.

For main spells Hex is great to deal extra damage and also lets you debuff some of the target’s ability checks. Sleep is more of a Zoe thing but it’s still an insane pact-specific spell so there’s no reason not to take it.

LEVEL 3 - WARLOCK 2

We’re going to keep going in Warlock firstly for Eldrich Invocations. The main one you want here is Lance of Lethargy so you can replicate Prowling Projectile’s movement speed slow and help set up some kills for your team. The other invocation slot will be left open for now as we wait for level 4, as will our spell choice.

LEVEL 4 - WARLOCK 3

Hello Book! Of course we’re taking Pact of the Tome for the Book of Thresholds Shadows, or just Book for short. Again be sure to ask your DM if the book can be sentient for RP purposes. Or alternatively have it not act be sentient and make your party think your crazy when you talk to it! As for cantrips take Guidance to buff your ADC with some Adaptive Force (note: Guidance will not increase damage), Mending to fix any tears Book may receive (don’t want any more lost chapters!), and even though you’re not really a melee fighter being able to magically scratch nearby champions enemies with Shocking Grasp will give you a fighting chance if you get stuck in the middle of combat.

Note: While it would be more in flavor to use Primal Savagery the reason I opted for Shocking Grasp is because you can cast it through your ally to cause an enemy to be unable to take Reactions. It’s more in flavor to scratch at your enemies but Shocking Grasp is far more useful for this build. Truthfully you can take any cantrip you want though these are just recommendations; I know having 3 damaging cantrips is a little excessive but I like having an attack roll cantrip, saving throw cantrip, and backup melee cantrip.

Now for the Invocation we skipped. I think most 5e veterans have identified what we’re looking for: Book of Ancient Secrets. Book is a resourceful... book and the value of Ritual spells can’t go unmentioned. Take Comprehend Languages and Identify: flip through Book’s pages until you can find the info that you want! And don’t be afraid about picking bad rituals because you can just inscribe more rituals later on!

Now for Spells! Once we get to 2nd level spells we get a lot more stuff to choose from but let’s just choose the main spells we need:

Misty Step - You’re a noob if you’re not packing Flash. Also since this is a multiclass build the problem of Misty Step taking Pact Magic slots can be negated, as you can use your Bard slots to cast Misty Step.

Hold Person - Hit a snare with Final Chapter so your friends can clean up!

Truthfully though all your 2nd level spells open up a huge array of possibilities and I’d recommend picking up any one of them. The Noble Genie gets Enlarge / Reduce which is one of my favorite spells thematically: feel free to pop an Elixir of Iron on your tank!

LEVEL 5 - BARD 2

Feel free to take Warlock 4 for the ASI but I’d like to get the Bard features up-and-running. At level 2 you get Jack of All Trades which means that Book can always help you out of a jam. You also get Song of Rest which further solidifies your role as a support.

For your spell of choice Charm Person lets you use that cute kitty face of yours to get a bunch of fan art on DeviantArt.

LEVEL 6 - BARD 3

Let’s start by picking out our Expertise because that’s the easy bit: Arcana and History - straight from your background. You’re a magic cat with a sentient book you should know these skills well.

Now for your Bard College. There are several good choices: Lore gives you more Magical Secrets to let you “itemize” better, College of Valor lets you buff your allies’ attacks with some Adaptive Force, but at the end of the day the question is this: what subclass lets you shield while also increasing your allies’ movement?

College of Glamour yes really! The main reason for this is Mantle of Inspiration which was the most Yuumi-esque ability of the bunch. You can expect a Bardic Inspiration die to give all your allies temporary HP as well as allow them to move as a reaction without provoking opportunity attacks. You also get Enthralling Performance which is certainly a nice bonus: distract a crowd with your feline charm while the rest of your team does their work.

You also get another spell and... I’ll be honest throwing all the spells on this guide is making this post far longer than it needs to be. I can give some general advice but I’m only here for the class features - not the spells. Pick spells that will help your team, the same way you’d itemize to help your team in League.

LEVEL 7 - BARD 4

Mostly taking Level 4 Bard now for the ASI. Bump Charisma for better spellcasting.

You also get another cantrip: get Dancing Lights to summon some moon moths to chase!

Note: One more level in Bard will get you Font of Inspiration, which allows your Bardic Inspiration to come back on a Short rest. It will also buff Mantle of Inspiration. If you think you’ll need to use Mantle of Inspiration more feel free to take another level in Bard earlier than suggested in this build.

LEVEL 8 - WARLOCK 4

And another ASI! Bump Charisma again for a maxed out spellcasting modifier!

LEVEL 9 - WARLOCK 5

At this level you get another Invocation as well as 3rd level spells. There are quite a few good invocations to pick from but as a squishy support you’re going to want Zhonya's - or in this case Tomb of Levistus. While not quite Zhonya's this invocation will give you a phat health buff in exchange for making you completely stationary until the end of your next turn. Pop it if the enemy Assassin ults you and pray that your team saves you.

Now that you got 3rd level spells there are some obvious choices. Counterspell? Fly? Maybe Dispell Magic or Gaseous Form? Honestly if your DM is allowing UA spells Psionic Blast from the psychic UA works great with the Genie patron. Those are my picks for some good level 3 spells - unfortunately the spells from the Genie Patron aren’t that good besides maybe Create Food and Water, which is only really useful for specific adventures.

Oh and you get another cantrip! I’d recommend Prestidigitation to pull more things out of Book.

LEVEL 10 - WARLOCK 6

This is the point that this build really starts to shine through. Is it bad that this build needs to get to level 10 before it really starts working? ...Eh...?

Anyways you get Elemental Resistance at this level which lets you give your You and Me (tether) target resistance to one of four elements. You can only choose one resistance per long rest so try to pick the damage type you think you’ll run into a lot. Pro tip: Fire damage is really common. Ignite is a powerful Summoner Spell.

LEVEL 11 - WARLOCK 7

At this level you get access to Level 7 invocations which are all... ehhhh? There are some cool ones here but none of them are really great for Yuumi so instead we’re going to go back a bit and pick up Exhaustion. ...The Summoner Spell, not the D&D debuff. Mire the Mind lets you cast Slow once per long rest: slow is a really powerful spell that you can pop on the ADC so your team can wail on them. Just make sure you don’t lose concentration.

You also get access to 4th level spells and while this is technically a spell Lulu has: Polymorph! Turn your allies into T-Rexes, turn your enemies into Fish (don’t try to eat the fish or they’ll turn back), and most importantly you can now become an actual cat! Truthfully though there are several great 4th level spells too and I recommend you look at all of them.

LEVEL 12 - WARLOCK 8

Ability Score Improvement but you should have max spellcasting by now which is the only thing that matters so... how about some Feats? I’m not going to choose any one particular Feat and instead focus on some of the better ones for you to take.

Alert - Along with Jack of All Trades this will almost always guarantee that you’re the first to go in initiative, meaning that you can tether to someone and start applying buffs.

Inspiring Leader - Lets you use Bop and Block early and give all your allies a nice health buffer to start the day.

Observant - With your Charisma and your proficiency buffing your Perception score this should guarantee that you don’t miss anything with those feline eyes of yours. Be sure to ping incoming ganks!

Resilient (CON) - You don’t really need the other effects of War Caster in this build and Resilient is just more useful overall.

Spell Sniper - Read this spell over and ask “does this sound useful?” If yes then take it, because you’re in a game with a DM who actually likes using cover mechanics.

Tough - Yuumi isn’t tough; that doesn’t mean you can’t be.

Lucky - When in doubt break out the OP bullshit perk.

You also get another spell: Dimension Door lets you recall back to base or somewhere similar.

LEVEL 13 - WARLOCK 9

At Warlock 9 you get access to another invocation, including your 9th level invocations and... oh oh there it is boys! Ascendant Step! Now you can be a proper hovering kitty cat! (Note if you took Fly at earlier levels it might be a good idea to drop it. Or not: you can still buff your allies!)

You also gain access to 5th level spells and here’s where it gets fun: Bigby’s Hand! Honestly this is just a fun spell but you can also justify most of the effects as being part of Yuumi (and Book)’s magic.

Clenched Fist - A full damage Prowling Projectile against a target.

Forceful Hand - More of a Janna thing but still very useful.

Grasping Hand - Hit your snare with Final Chapter. "I am TOTALLY doing this!"

Interposing Hand - Again more of a Taliyah thing (or perhaps Jarvan) but still very useful!

This would be my immediate pick but other than that for 5th level?

Creation is your other patron-specific spell and it is awesome. A little situational maybe but that’s the nature of Book! Pull out something useful: unfortunately it can’t be fish but still!

Hold Monster is like Hold Person but better. It’s a big spell slot though so be wary.

Synaptic Static is like a combination of Leona and Alistar, which is to say it’s a big nuke from the sky that makes all your enemies do less damage.

Contact Other Plane is not my first pick for a number of reasons but if you don’t know what to pick being able to ask Book for directions can be helpful. And it comes back on a short rest too! :) Just make sure Book doesn’t break your mind. (Maybe invest in the Resilient feat for Intelligence if you plan to use this spell.)

LEVEL 14 - WARLOCK 10

And now we’ve reached the capstone of our Warlock levels and we get two very powerful abilities. Firstly there’s Protective Wish which lets you use your reaction to swap places between you and your tethered target if either of you get hit. Tank hits for your allies... or alternatively don’t do that and have them shield you from baddies trying to spray you! Just make sure that you aren’t teleporting into a more dangerous location and as a word of advice: don’t throw your allies into danger without their consent.

The other ability you get is Genie’s Entertainment which is far more useful. As an action you can make Book pull a target within 90 feet to a harmless dimension where they’ll be stuck for up to a minute. They can make a Charisma saving throw every turn until they either succeed or a minute passes before they’re ejected where they just were or in the closest available space. This is effectively a one-time use of the Banishment spell (which you can take as a Warlock) but it doesn’t require Concentration which means you can put your focus on other useful buffs for your team.

You also get another cantrip so invest in Mage Hand so Book can pick up things you can’t reach with those paws of yours.

LEVEL 15 - BARD 5

And now we’re bouncing back to Bard and finally getting Font of Inspiration. Honestly if you need more use out of Mantle of Inspiration then feel free to get this level earlier, but you already have plenty of short rest value with your Warlock spell slots.

And speaking of spells: 3rd level Bard spells, anyone? I’d argue that Sending would be quite in-flavor, and Hypnotic Pattern would make for a strong utility, even if you don’t have an AoE stun. Honestly I’m going to skip the spell talk and only cover the last few levels of Bard for completion’s sake.

LEVEL 16 - BARD 6

You now get Countercharm which is poo poo garbage and will make you want to die. But to be fair popping cleanse would help your ADC. (But why are you bringing Cleanse and not Exhaust?)

You also get Mantle of Majesty which will let you play the backseat gamer role you’ve always dreamed of being. As a bonus action you can start to command (the spell) anyone you please to do as you say. Approach, Drop, Flee, Halt... awn there’s not Pet command!

LEVEL 17 - BARD 7

At 7th level you get... nothing! :D Okay you get 4th level spells to be fair but I’m far too lazy to talk about spells anymore.

LEVEL 18 - BARD 8

ASI. Check my suggestions for Feats to take from Warlock 8.

LEVEL 19 - BARD 9

Your Song of Rest increases to a d8 now which honestly probably doesn’t help you much at this point. You do get 5th level spells now though, which you can cast through your Warlock slots.

LEVEL 20 - BARD 10

And for our capstone we finally get Magical Secrets! There’s one specific spell we want: Haste. It’s super zoomies! Other than that you can buy Redemption with Aura of Vitality (which kinda works more like Fiora’s ult but w/e) or maybe an Ardent Censor of sorts with Spirit Guardians? You can grab Mikael's Crucible with Warding Bond, or perhaps contract some help from Zillian and grab Death Ward! There are literally dozens of spells to choose from and I recommend searching online if you don’t know what to take.

Your Bardic Inspiration also increases which means more Mantle of Inspiration health, and you get 2 more skills to give Expertise! Honestly at level 20 it’s a little too late to really choose between Expertise but know that any skill you have Expertise in will have a +12 modifier! You’re essentially guaranteed to succeed at any check with a skill you have Expertise on at this level unless your DM is Twisted Fate and is using Loaded Dice on you.

FINAL BUILD

PROS

Cover to Cover - You’ve got a comedic amount of utility between ten cantrips and the ability to cast any ritual spell you can get your paws on. Along with Jack of All Trades and Expertise covering any skills you may need you’ll never be without a cat trick.

You and me, we got this! - Between Bardic Inspiration, Song of Rest, Elemental Resistance, Protective Wish, and a decent array of buff spells (tbh I kinda wish I took more :P) you can be an incredibly useful asset to your teammates.

You look like unscratched furniture! - One place this build particularly excels is in the crowd control department. Between Enthralling Performance, Mantle of Majesty, Genie’s Entertainment, and a huge array of debuffs you’ll never be lacking in a way to keep your allies safe and the enemies away from you.

CONS

Oh! Sunbeam ahead! - While I tried my best to avoid taking too many Concentration spells I have to admit that a lot of the nicer stuff will demand your attention: Hold Person, Haste, Polymorph, Bigby’s Hand, and Mire the Mind (Slow) all require concentration, so you can only have one up at a time. While you still have options the concentration requirement is heavy.

We’ve got 6 left... or was it 5? - If you’re roleplaying the build properly you’ll have absolutely horrendous health. No additional Constitution modifier combined with a d8 hit die means that you’ll have about a hundred health at level 20, and a Power Word Kill is all it’ll take to end you. Additionally your ability modifiers (with the exception of Charisma) are rather low which means low saving throws and a low AC with only Light armor. Know that you can sometimes sacrifice roleplay for the sake of a more viable build - having good skill checks is great and all but it doesn’t matter if you’re dead.

Full AP? - This build is pure support and I skipped on a lot of the strong damage options that you could’ve taken. In particular this is a max Charisma Eldritch Blast Warlock which doesn’t take Agonizing Blast, a concept most would consider an act of treason. A lot of the invocations I picked more for flavor than actual utility and you’re more than welcome to change Mire the Mind or Tomb of Levistus for something more useful.

But you’re not here to steal all the fame: tag along, help your team, and they’ll help you find your master! Just don’t ask the Triton what they taste like or else they’ll give you the spray bottle.

More Warlock Levels?

The only thing we really get out of level 10 Bard is Magical Secrets, but if you’re not interested in getting Haste all you really need for this build is 3 levels in Bard for Mantle of Inspiration (though 5 levels is ideal for Font of Inspiration.)

You can take more levels in Warlock to get Mystic Arcanum, more Warlock slots, and more Eldritch Invocations. You also get Collector’s Call which is a very strong ability that’s sadly held back by its casting requirement. If you’re planning on going heavier on Warlock instead of splitting this build 50 / 50 than get expertise in Persuasion! You’re absolutely going to need it to cast Collector’s Call reliably.

The other important thing to note is that Warlock honestly doesn’t have that many supportive spells in its kit, especially when you’re not playing Divine Soul. Dropping Bard levels means you’ll lose spells like Mass Cure Wounds. You’ll also have far fewer spell slots to cast your lower level Warlock spells, which does mean more 5th level spells but it also means less fun with spells like Misty Step, Dimension Door, and Polymorph.

Yes, I realize that this post is coming out nowhere near January, but I have been finding it difficult to keep up with blogging lately, so it is what it is, right?  Hopefully, things have calmed down enough in my life that I can get back to writing semi-regularly, but no promises yet!  Regardless, I read a lot in January and am eager to share my thoughts with you.  Let’s get started!

Unfortunately, I started off my year with what may turn out to be my least favorite title of 2020.  I hope this reaches her in time is a poetry collection, and while I like to pick up poetry once in a while, I didn’t connect with this collection at all.  First of all, it felt like there should have been a little more editing, as I found a number of sentences and word choices that I think might have just been typos.  Beyond that, the poetry itself reminded me of the “Tumblr style” where poets just break a normal sentence into multiple lines to make the words feel deeper than they really are, which is not a style I enjoy at all.  The good news is, however, that my reading can only get better from here, right?

Emergency Skin – N.K. Jemisin

Rating – 5 Stars

After reading an incredibly underwhelming title, I decided to give N.K. Jemisin’s Emergency Skin from Amazon’s Forward collection a try, figuring that an author this popular couldn’t possibly let me down.  Thankfully, my instincts were right and I loved this short story so much.  Given how short this experience is, I don’t want to give too much away, but I will say that this is a phenomenal science fiction story with the best usage of second person narration that I have ever seen in literature.  This was my first title by Jemisin and I can’t wait to read more of her work in the future.

Randomize – Andy Weir

Rating – 3 Stars

Since I loved Emergency Skin so much, I wanted to give another short story from the same collection a try, which led me to Andy Weir’s Randomize.  This wasn’t bad at all, but I didn’t love it to nearly the same degree as Jemisin’s work.  The hardest part for me is that the central premise, involving the security of gambling machines and whether they can be hacked or not, felt both flimsy and info-dumping in its setup.  The ending was pretty satisfying and I had fun reading this, but I came away from the story feeling like not enough had really been done with the universe.  I’m hoping to get to more of the Forward short story collection a try in the coming months, so I hope I enjoy the others more than I enjoyed this one.

Interview with the Robot – Lee Bacon

Rating – 4 Stars

I decided to pick up an Audible subscription recently in order to read more audiobooks, and Interview with the Robot was one of the Audible Original productions available one month, so I decided to pick it up.  This short audiobook with a full cast follows a robot who looks like a young child.  She gets apprehended by the police and has to tell her strange life story to a social worker in charge of her case.

While listening to this story, I had a smile on my face from beginning to end because it was just so charming and adorable.  That said, however, there were a few pretty good twists and turns that I didn’t see coming and definitely made me feel a lot of empathy towards the protagonist.  Overall, my main complaint is that it was just too short, at around three hours of listening.  I want more from this world in the future, so I hope some sort of sequel comes out eventually.

The Last Wish – Andrzej Sapkowski

Rating – 3 Stars

2020 is the year that I work my way into adult fantasy, and other than reading Game of Thrones last year, reading The Last Wish is one of the first titles that I have ever picked up in the genre.  This series follows Geralt, a witcher, which is a type of mutated human that fights monsters, as well as the many people that surround him.  This specific book is a short story collection that follows, for the most part, Geralt as he goes from contract to contract, killing monsters.

I love the lore and world of the Witcher universe, but I’m not totally convinced that I appreciate the writing style.  It’s hard to tell if this is because of the translation or this is the intention of the original author, but there was a lot of distance between the narrator and the events happening, which made me feel disconnected from the story.  I still intend to continue on, especially after I completely fell in love with the TV series, so I hope that I will connect more with future books and get used to the writing style.

The Outsider – Stephen King

Rating – 4 Stars

Stephen King is an author that I should read way more than I do, because I only pick up one or two of his books in a year, but I almost always enjoy them.  As it turns out, The Outsider is no exception.  This horror novel follows a group of detectives as they investigate the death of a young boy in a small town.  The obvious suspect is the town’s little league coach, as the evidence is quickly mounting up against him.  As the case opens up, however, conflicting details emerge and the truth becomes more difficult to grasp.

Overall, I really enjoyed the mystery and couldn’t stop reading for the entirety of this 600-page tome.  Stephen King has a way of making long books feel like they go by in an instant.  Unsurprisingly, however, the ending was incredibly underwhelming.  Additionally, The Outsider is connected to the Mr. Mercedes trilogy, which I didn’t know, and I got pretty spoiled for the events of that series, which is unfortunate.  On top of all of this, I would like to take a moment and point out that the graphic depictions of the child’s death did not really need to be so detailed, much less have those horrific details brought up at least a dozen more times over the course of the book.  It just felt gratuitous after a while.  I enjoyed this book immensely, but the details I mentioned above kept it just barely out of five-star territory.

Every Heart a Doorway – Seanan McGuire

Rating – 4 Stars

Since The Outsider was quite a lengthy read, I wanted to pick up some shorter titles again, leading me to finally pick up the start to a fantasy series that has been on my radar for a long time:  Every Heart a Doorway.  This series follows a group of children that found doorways to their own personal versions of Narnia and Wonderland.  At some point, however, their newfound homes kicked them back into the normal world and they have to learn how to cope with returning to their own life.  A halfway home of sorts was founded for children struggling with this task, and as it turns out, bringing a bunch of children together who have all gone to vastly different worlds can cause some pretty crazy antics and disagreements.

I love the characters, but didn’t find the plot of this overly engaging.  Given that my rating is still high, it’s clear that my disinterest in the plot wasn’t a deal-breaker by any means, but I just struggled to stay interested, especially given that I guessed the big plot twist almost immediately.  Since these books are so short, I will definitely be reading the sequels.  In fact, given how late this wrap-up is, I can say with great certainty that my February wrap-up will have a lot of news regarding my progress on this series.

Outer Order, Inner Calm – Gretchen Rubin

Rating – 3 Stars

I like to try reading books that push me out of my comfort zone, and it has been a long time since I read anything that might be considered a part of the self-improvement genre.  Therefore, as a chronically messy person, I thought reading Outer Order, Inner Calm might be an interesting adventure, given that the whole book is dedicated to getting rid of unwanted junk to keep life peaceful.

This was an incredibly easy read.  The writing style was simple and easy to digest.  Reading it was actually a pretty pleasant and relaxing experience.  That said, however, I’m not sure how useful I actually found the book, as the advice felt like it was playing it pretty safe.  For the most part, the tips went like “Get rid of things you don’t use anymore” and “Clean your house” with about 75 different variations, each.  I’m glad I read it, but I don’t think I got much out of it.

Everything My Mother Taught Me – Alice Hoffman

Rating – 4 Stars

My final read for the month of January was another short story from an Amazon collection like the Forward collection.  This is Everything My Mother Taught Me, and it’s my first attempt at reading Alice Hoffman.  This follows a young girl who is living at a lighthouse and trying to navigate coming of age with her dysfunctional mother around her.  I can’t say much more than that given how short the story is, but I did really enjoy this.  This is a common complaint for me with short stories, but the main reason it didn’t get five stars is because it just didn’t feel fully fleshed out.  When I read Emergency Skin, I felt like Jemisin did a phenomenal job of packing a full story into a short amount of pages, and Everything My Mother Taught Me didn’t manage this as successfully.  I’m still quite eager to pick up more books by Hoffman, however, as I enjoyed her writing style.

Nightmare-Bucky Barnes

Summ- what happens when Bucky wakes from a nightmare choking the love of his life.

Authors note- tumblr has been real mean to me lately. wont let me post. that's why I have been inactive. let me know if you have a prompt of something else you guys would like me to write for you. 

Nightmare   Bucky and I have been together for about 5 months now. things were starting to get pretty serious. I at least knew it was getting serious when he finally told me who he really was and introduced me to all of his friends/team mates. that night he told me his 'Story'...well I guess he told me some of it. at one point he started crying and I had to stop him. I wanted to know what all he had been through but I didn't want t see him in pain. I didn't want him to relive it all just to tell me. I had to stop him and tell him that I didn't care. he didn't have to finish. I told him I loved him no matter what. he told me no one has ever told him they loved him before. he said that he loves me too and he warned me. he warned me that because I was with him I was putting my life in danger. I told him I did not give a damn. I loved him and I wanted to be with him. that was my choice. he promised me that he wouldn't let anything happen to me regardless. 

As if the world was out to get us, a week later I was kidnapped. I don't know I guess I wasn't as fazed by it as usual kidnap victims are.  didn't freak out and I wasn't scared after. No PTSD, I didn't go through anything. it honestly wasn't that big of a deal for me, this angered Bucky. he thought I should be mad at him for not keeping me safe. he was confused and mad that I wasn't frightened. I laughed it off and told him it was because I was literally unconscious the whole time. literally. some Hydra agent needed that smallest amount of info and decided to steal me. he found out where I lived and broke in while I was sleeping. the man chloroformed me and took me. I didn't know anything had happened till I woke up. I was on some medical table with Bucky Tony and Bruce hovered over me. I had an IV in me and Bucky was looking as guilty as ever. I remember the augment we had that night. the one that almost ruined us...

"I cant believe I let this happen." Bucky said pacing around his living area. we were at the tower and I was going to be staying that night. me and Bucky had just gotten in his room. "Bucky baby its not that big of a deal." I said trying to reach for him. "Not that big of a deal? you were gone. taken right out from under me Y/N. he could have tortured and beaten you!" he said I sighed and ran my hand up his arm. "but I wasn't." he scoffed "you could have been killed or...or" I shushed him. "Bucky. I'm here. I'm okay. you did protect me, you got me out. you got me back, you kept me safe. Please Bucky." I said softly. "He could have Rapped you Y/N." he said closing his eyes and shaking his head, as if to shake the thought out of his brain. "Bucky..." I whispered. "I cant be with you anymore."  my heart stopped. "Wha..What?" I asked shaking my head. "No!" I said stepping back. "What are you even??? what do you even mean? you cant be serious." I said, like him trying to shake the thought out of my head. my breathing quickened and tears started to burn in my eyes. "Buck... you cant leave me. we just,..." the tears started falling as I took another two steps away from him. "I cant be with you if I'm putting your life and safety at risk, Y/N I cant." he said stepping forward and taking my hand. I snatched my hand out of his. "that's not your choice to make Bucky. I chose you. My choice." I said stomping my foot like a child. " if you didn't wanna be with me or anyone because you would be putting my lives in danger why did you talk to me? why did you peruse me? why did you as me out?" I asked my voice rising. he ran his fingers through his hair and sighed heavily. "And most importantly why the FUCK did you make me Fall in love with you just to fucking dump me after the first scare James....I...I cant fucking take this. I'm fucking out of here." I said crying and walking towards the door. he grabbed my arm and yanked me to him. "Y/N please I'm just trying to find a solution. I don't wanna leave you, I don't wanna loose you, I love you too baby please." he said as if I could do anything to fix the stupid situation we are in. " ‘Baby please’ what? I cant give you some magic solution to your ridiculous notion that you can keep me safe 24/7. you cant move in with me and stay with me all day every day to make sure I'm 100% safe at all times. Bucky, your my boyfriend not my fucking body guard!" I said his eyes widened and he paused for a second. he looked up at me after a moment and started to speak again. "that could work actually." he said thinking. I rolled my eyes and scoffed "what could work Bucky?" I asked the corners of his lips lifted slightly. he turned and grabbed a hold of both of my hands. he looked into my eyes and smiled "lets move in together." he said softly. my heart spiked. "what?" I asked. he smiled wider. "well. I cant be around you 24/7 like you said. after all I do have a job and I have to safe the world quite often but, if we were to live together I could be with you every night if I'm not on missions. and when I am on mission you could stay that the tower with the others." he explained as he pulled me to his chest.

 he wants to live with me. I would have to talk to him later about how I didn't need to be babysat but living together is a huge step forward. a step forward that I want to take with Bucky. 

After we cooled down we sat together and watched a movie and talked about all the kinks of moving in. we talked about getting an apartment somewhere in the city. maybe even in the same building as Steve's. Bucky thought it would be cool to have an apartment across the hall from him. he said it reminded him of the show Friends, I had recently gotten him to watch. he loved the show. we thought about getting a place in the tower maybe... but then again I already didn't wanna be baby sat and having Stark Cameras on my every move was the ultimate invasion of privacy. I don't know how Bucky could live here already with all the stark surveillance. after a few hours our fight was forgotten and we went to bed a completely content with the moving in together compromise. 

that night I woke up with a start. my air way was cut off and I was couldn't to breath. my mouth and nose were blocked off and there was a sharp paid in my neck. my eyes shot open to meat Bucky's blue eyes, his pupils were dilated like hell and his face was red. "Buck-y" I managed to say as his grip around my neck got tighter. "Buck!" I gasped. his grip tightened and tightened I tried gasping for air and I couldn't get any. the pressure in my eras was reaching unbearable and tears burned in my eyes. I was screaming in my head. the love of my life was literally choking me to death. " Touch her and I will kill you!" he said softly. I tried kicking and scratching at him but he wouldn't budge "I WILL FUCKING KILL YOU!" he Screamed looking me straight in the eyes. Fear pierced my heart as I was seconds from giving up before his bedroom door flew open and Vison was next to us in seconds. Sam wasn't far behind as they both pulled him off of me. Steve and Natasha came running in the room finally as I tried to catch a breath. my hands flew to my throat as I still couldn't breath. Natasha was at my side and lifting me from the bed. I tried making hand singles at her. trying to tell her even though bucks hands were gone I still couldn't breath. the pain on my throat was so much. I was hysterically crying. trying to mouth the words "its hurts its hurts I cant breath I cant breath." I touched my face with my hand and it was burning hot. I could feel Natasha cradling me in her arms right before I slowly passed out.

Natasha told me that I slept for 3 days when I woke. I was still at the tower just in the recovery clinic in a different part of the building. I was in a room with blue walls, laying In Stark's version of what a hospital bed should be and I had to say I agree. my whole body was super comfortable and they had me on so many fancy drugs, I couldn't feel a thing. the only reason I even knew there was a problem was because I couldn't talk. when Sam first came to visit a few days later he told me it was a good thing that I couldn't talk. I wanted to laugh but I just wrote "fuck you" on the white board that Tony gave me to communicate. 

on my 4th night being awake but my 10th night being in the clinic I finally looked at myself in the mirror. I would have gasped if I could even move my mouth at all. my whole Neck was bruised and swollen. the swelling was so bad it forced my face upward. I couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe I looked like that. I broke down crying. I fell to the floor and hugged my knees to my chest.

on my 13th day in the clinic I finally talked with Natasha and Wanda about how I was truly feeling. they had been good friends to me ever since I met them. I had grown really close to Natasha and even more so now that she had helped me after Bucky...  "So, Can you tell us what happened?" Wanda asked sitting on the Sofa across from me. Natasha sat at my feet on the bed looking up at me with wondering eyes. a part of me knew what every one was thinking but not saying out loud. every one was scared Bucky had done this on purpose. as if he wanted to hurt me. as if he was an abuser. everyone thought these horrible things could be true but not me. I knew. every one knew Bucky had crazy nightmares like this. Hes done this before! he just hasn't ever hurt anyone before. I wrote on the white board "Dreaming, Kept Screaming 'Touch her I Kill you'" they both sighed and I know the sighs are of relief. no one had told me anything about Bucky since I got in. I erased that then wrote "I know he didn't mean it... I just hope he still wants to be with me." tears started running down my face as I showed them then erased and wrote "I Know he must blame himself." I looked down for a moment not wanting to see their reactions. I finally looked back up and put a question mark on my board. they just looked at me. I looked back to my board and wrote "We talked about getting a place together... somewhere in Steve's building maybe..." I looked up at them and tried to smile with my lips but I just couldn't. Natasha find of smiled but she looked as if she was withholding information. I would have sighed with frustration if I could. instead I wrote on my board " this isn't much of a talk."

on the 20th day I had it. The swelling on my neck was gone and I could move my head and face. I was walking around more on my own but I decided against leaving my little room days ago. I thought if Bucky wanted to see me he would come and visit, but also why would he want to visit. he hurt me. not on purpose but he hurt me he must be thinking that he needs to stay away from me. he must be thinking he couldn't protect me from kidnappers and he cant even protect me from himself. he probably wants to break things off with me to "protect me" he wouldn't wanna live with me after this, much less be with me. I spent most of the day crying. every one left me alone that day. even Natasha. they all probably knew I was crying and didn't come in.

the next day Natasha came to visit and after about 2 hours of small talk I couldn't do it any more. it was driving me crazy not being near Bucky and it was driving me crazy being stuck in this fucking room for weeks without him.  I wrote on my board "he's not coming is he?" I don't even know why I wrote the question mark. shit I don't even know why I wrote the question. I knew it deep inside. I knew it 100% though when I saw the look on Nat's face. it was instant tears. she closed her eyes and rubbed my knee as I cried. anger spiked through me. I chucked the white board across the room. it hit the Wall with a loud satisfying crack that made Nat flinch.

 I just pointed at the door.

 the second she closed the door, I was up and putting my things together. I shoved everything that Nat had brought for me in the bag...that she also had brought for me, and I put my shoes on. I had ditched the hospital gown when I as first woken up but today I was in a tank top and some sweats. 

when I got myself completely together I finally left the room and headed down the hall. I left my keys in Buckys room so I needed to go there and get them before I actually leave. I tip toed around the tower and only took the stairs. I'm just happy I could finally breath on my own and that I was still pretty athletic or all the flights of stairs I took would have totally killed me.

 I wanted to check the gym before actually going to his room. if he's upset and I know he must be he should be spending most of his time in the gym and if he's in the gym he wont be in the room and if he's not in the room I don't have to run into him. decides, he doesn't wanna see me anyway. 

when I saw that he was in fact at the gym beating the shit out of a punching bag it took all I had in me too tare my eyes away. all I wanted to do was run in there and kiss him. i shook my head and ran to his room and quickly grabbed one of my jackets and my keys then left. I went out the back way. I already know they know I'm leaving and I know who ever found out first has probably already had someone sent after me, so when I finally hit the parking lot I was in a full dead ass sprint. I already knew they were coming and I already know that they know where I'm going but I'm still going to the same place. My Apartment. in not about to change my destination I don't care if I'm found, I just wanna be at home. 

when I finally got home I wasn't surprised to see Natasha and Steve already here and sitting on my couch. I just rolled my eyes and threw my keys on the kitchen counter and threw my bag on the floor. if I had my board... I don't even know or care what I would say with it. I didn't say anything at all. all I did was walk to my fridge grad a bottle of wine and a glass.

 I saw Steve start to stand but Natasha held her hand out stopping him. I laughed in my head, my girl knows I need a drink. I poured a deep ass glass and drank the whole thing in under 30 seconds. I started pouring another glass when Steve spoke. "He Loves you." he said Natasha sighed at his words. I closed my eyes and took another deep ass gulp. I wanted to say 'if he did he'd be here.' I shook my head at the thought as Natasha actually said my thought out loud. 

I would have scoffed if I could. no she cant read my mind, but she defiantly knows what I'm thinking. Steve sighed and closed his eyes for a moment too. I lifted my glass and waved it around as if to say ' I know I know I just wish he would be here.' and Natasha reading my mind again said " she understands the situation and understands why he thinks he should stay away but she needs him and he's not here." she said I closed my eyes again and let the moisture fall down my face as I took another sip. after about 2 more glasses and me crying silently in front of them I grabbed a pin and paper.  Bucky, you know I don't care, you know I love you, you know I forgave you. I'm here if you want me. if you don't I get it, but ill be home if you do. if it makes it easier, I will never be happy without you. - Forever yours Regardless - Y/N

I handed them the paper and down the glass. I threw it in the sink roughly, effectively breaking it and tossed the empty bottle into the trash. I turned and looked over to them. they were on there feet now. probably startled by the glass breaking. I just shrugged at them and walked into my room to jump on my bed face first. when Natasha entered she sighed and sat something down on my bed side. "these are the meds your supposed to take them every day now but ill be here to make you take them every day anyway." she said matter of factly. " Tony said the green ones are for discomfort, you take one the second you start to feel any pain. this other bottle is for healing and this other one has words I don't even know on it but...ill be here to make sure you take them anyway." she repeated. she shot me a look each time she said so. "we'll let you rest, umm just call me when you wake up. remember the green ones are for pain." she said I didn't bother looking up from where my face was firmly planted in my sheets. I just lifted my hand up and gave her a sarcastic thumbs up. although she probably doesn't know its sarcasm.

crying and drinking!

 that's what I have been doing for the past 5 days. that's 26 days without the love of my life. in my opinion, you start going through withdrawals. I'm more nervous and shaky. I've been biting my nails off and the worst part about feeling this is the giant gapping whole that has formed in my chest. its as if I'm being torn up from the end side out. like there is this black whole in my chest that's gonna swallow me up the longer I'm away from him.

 the pain was unbearable. Starks green pills didn't work for this pain. I had cried for 2 days straight. I went ahead and texted tony about it hoping he could either help more with the pain or better yet knock some since in my favorite super soldier. 

Tony some how rigged it so I had paid time off at my work. they were sending my checks right to my apartment. I didn't know how long I would have that leave from work but my voice had finally started coming back. and the bruising on my neck was a blue greenish color now so the healing had been working. Without Starks Magic I'm sure it would have taken me at least 8 weeks in ICU before I could do anything on my own. my voice was still very raspy but Natasha was helping me with it. "Tony says in 2 weeks you will be singing again. he said he knew you would be pissed if you couldn't sing anymore so he made you this special gum that you can take to somehow help your vocal cords." Nat told me. I smiled up at her and spoke softly "he's right, I would be pissed." she let out a small laugh. 

that day Natasha convinced me to go to the mall with her. I caved and we actually found some really cute clothing and some cute decorations. I know I shouldn't be looking for things to decorate me and Bucky's now fictional apartment but I had too. I still had hope me would get his head out of his ass. on our way our of that particular store we walked past a spa. Natasha was the one who actually stopped and was pulling me inside. I just smiled and went in with her. if there is ever a chance to get Natasha in a girlly place like this, I'm taking it. I actually ended up getting my hair cut. Short and cute. at least that's what Natasha called the cut. she said it was just like me repeating "Short and cute." it made me laugh. it felt good to laugh. on our way out of the mall we got stopped. a very handsome tall blonde man walked over to us. I assumed he was hitting on Nat. he had a very welcoming vibe and his bright green eyes would be something to melt over. "Well Daring? would you at least take my number?" he asked. I guess I spaced out. was he actually talking to me? that made me smile so I went ahead and took his number and said thank you. I shoved the number in my back pocket as I felt my face heat up. Nat just smiled at me as we mad our way to the exit.

when we got back to the apartment we unloaded everything I had gotten and put everything away. when finished Nat Sat on the couch of my living room and I walked into the kitchen to make us glasses of wine. I walked back over to her and handed her, her glass and sat with her. "you've been drinking an awful lot lately." she commented. I gave her a look.

 there went my first good day. 

"when the Love of your life chocks you in your sleep then dumps you by saying nothing at all we will see what your fucking poison is!" I snapped. I shook my head and took a sip before speaking again " I'm sorry, I didn't mean that." she nodded " I know, and I know how your feeling. well I mean, I know what its like to get hurt by the winter soldier and not Bucky." she said taking a drink of her wine. my eyebrows raised. as she pulled her shirt up a bit showing me a big round blotchy scar. "when on a mission, I was assigned to protect someone. the winter soldier showed up and shot right through me to kill the guy. Bucky still comes up to me sometimes..." she says pulling her shirt back down and taking a drink. I joined her. "to apologize." she finished. that made my heart warm. I gave her a soft smile and she returned it by touching my knee kindly. I looked down and took a deep breath. "if it makes you feel any better..." she said starting to gently run her hand up and down my thigh. " Bucky hasn't spoken to anyone since he hurt you. not even Steve." she told me.

 I sighed that didn't make me feel any better. that didn’t make me feel better at all. he's just as alone and depressed as I am. that doesn't make me feel good. Bucky in pain makes me hurt. in fact that made me want to cry. my heart sped up and my face I could tell was turning red before the tears started to fall. "he's not coming is he?" she casted her eyes downward and I just broke all over again. she grabbed me and pulled me to her as I cried.

the next few days went by in a blur. 8 more days. 34 Days without him. I cleaned my house dirtied it up and cleaned it again. hell I even rearranged my furniture out of boredom. I debated on going back to work but I knew I would leave when I got there. I don't wanna do anything anymore. I don't wanna do anything without him. today it rained. it stared raining at about 7:32 am and it hasn't stopped yet. I sat at my windowsill, a glass of wine in hand as I watched the rain fall. when me and Bucky first met... it was in the rain.

 I was completely drenched as I walked through the park. I wore my yoga's and running shoes to workout in the ran. I was jogging though the park just like Bucky was. we had literally ran right into each other. both of us at a full sprint in the rain turning a sharp corner. we crashed into each other and slipped together on the pavement. I fell on my back while his weight fell on top of me. his body hit mine with a smack we both let out a loud groan. he looked down at me or a moment then lifted his torso up and off of mine and rested his weight in his Metal arm? I looked into his eyes for a moment. I don't know how long we laid on the ground just watching each other. he looked at me like I was the only person in the world. he blinked and looked down at my lips, then back to my eyes. "I'm Bucky."

I pulled the wine bottle up and poured. I was starting to think that maybe he was just...maybe it wasn't as serious as I thought it was. our relationship. I know its only been 8 months and that 8th month I have been here hurt, without him.

 its been raining all daybut I hadn't cried once. that 'once' should have been a 'yet' as the tears of the day finally started falling. I leaned against a see-though window crying my eyes out. I just wanted to be outside in the rain. with him again.

I walked outside my front door slowly. I was wearing black short shorts and a white tank. my feet were bare as I took the first step past the threshold of my apartment. I felt the cool concrete under my toes as I walked slowly out to the courtyard that's outside my widow. I felt a drop of water fall on my foot. just one drop and I wasn't out from under the complexes roofing yet. I stopped and sighed realizing it was one of my tears. I rolled my eyes at myself and took another sip of my wine. I walked out from under the roofing and felt the wet grass under my feet. the water started to fall down one me soaking my clothing and wetting through my hair. I covered my wine glass with my hand to protect the wine and then I looked up to the sky. I watched the water fall and the stars staying still and shining bright between the cracks of the water drops. I gulped down the rest of the wine and through the glass on the ground. it slid on the wet grass until finally reaching the street and crashing against the curb and breaking under someone's feet. I looked up and my breath cached. 

"Buck." 

"W-what are you doing here?" I choked out as he slowly started to approach me. he was in his civilian clothes. a regular grey shirt and jeans with his favorite black jacket. his hair was soaked and sticking to his face. along with the rest of his body. I didn't look at him as he got closer. "I-I thought you didn't want to be with me anymore. you haven't come to see me after..." I stroked my neck. "I know....I know I'm sorry. I d-don't know w-why I didn't come I'm sorry. I'm so sorry I hurt you I cant even believe I could do something like that...well I know I can do things like that but just not to you.... if Vison wasn't awake you would be dead Y/N, a-and when I finally came too I had thought I had killed you." he said yelling over the rain. by now he had reached for me. both of his hands were on my arms gripping them tightly but I didn't dare flinch. "I saw you trying to breath a-and then falling limp on the ground. I thought I had killed you. how could I live with myself knowing I had did that to you. almost taking the love of my life's, life away." he said I finally looked up at him

Love of his life 

"Love of your life?" I asked. he smiled down at me "the love of my life!" he repeated. I smiled up at him and looked down at his arms by now he had one hand on my hip and the other on my cheek. "your not afraid of touching me?" I asked looking back up at him. "its a part of why I stayed away. I don't wanna hurt you b-but.....Natasha.." was all he said. and everything came into place. she talked to him for me. probably told him how I felt and how he felt and we are miserable without each other. I couldn't believe this. I turned my head to the side and looked around. I looked down at my feet and misplaced my footing. "this cant be real..."  whispered. the grip on my hip tightened and I slipped. we fell together on the wet grass. we both let out startled groans. Bucky leaned out to look at me. his body was on top of mine, his lower body rested in between my legs. "I didn't think I would get you back into this position for a long while." I joked. he looked at me and let out a huff in a laugh. he lifted his hand and moved wet hair out of my face then his hand ran down my face and around my chin and further down to stroke my neck. I lifted my head up giving him more access. he flinched away from me when I did that. I grabbed his wrist and made him touch my neck. "I'm okay, I've been healing well, its okay. I love you!" I said making his hand cup my face. "please please don't be afraid." he whispered his voice broken. it was almost hard to hear over how heavy it was raining. "Never, I'll never be afraid. I'll only love you I swear just stay with me please. I cant live without you." I said. "and I cant live without you!" he said I smiled and grabbed the back of his neck to pull his lips to mine.

it was like it usually was, or how it used to be. kissing Bucky was like my first and last kiss all at the same time. every kiss with him is my first and last. he's the world to me. it was like that kiss could last forever. Just us under the stars as the rain fell all over us. like the first time we met but with a kiss. my lips tingled, my body tingled. every time we touched I knew it was meant to be. he pulled away and looked down at me. "I like what you did with your hair." he complemented. I blushed "thank you." he smiled every time he complemented me it felt like the first."Come on babe your getting cold. lets get you inside." he said pulling us both to our feet. I went to dust myself off but there is no point due to the rain. I then felt Bucky's Metal arm sweep me up. he was carrying me back to the apartment. 

when inside he walked me into the room and set me down on my bed in the bedroom. "I like what you did with the place." he said looking around while running his free hand in his hair. " get those wet clothes off and into your robe. I'm gonna draw you a bath." he said kissing my temple. "thanks." I said nodding and removed my clothing slowly while he left the room. after a second I heard the water running. I sighed and walked to my closet and pulled out my floor length floral rode and wrapped it around my body. I was happy he's here, that he's back with me, that he wants me still. I'm happy he isn't afraid to touch me. I wondered what Natasha had told him or talked to him about. I wanna know but I also don't care. as long as I get my Bucky back. 

he walked back into the bedroom with his shirt and shoes off. his wet pants clung to his legs as he reached for me. I took a hold of him and he pulled me to the bathroom. when I walked in it was warm. there was steam coming up from the clear water that filled the tub and the air smelled of lavender. I smiled and turned to face him. he kissed me softly and pilled the string of my rode and pushed the fabric off my shoulders letting the material fall to the ground. he looked at me nervously.

 " I know that I hurt you by not coming sooner. a-and I know its going to take a while for you to fully forgive my betrayal. I understand how much I hurt you. Natasha explained and I never wanted you to go through even more pain then the pain I had already inflicted on you. I love you and I wanna be with you. I wont be with you if you don't want to but I know you do love and want to be with me so ill stay until you don't want me anymore. and ill try my best to never hurt you again. Tony gave me drugs to take before I sleep every night. he said it would help paralyze me when I'm unconscious. so I can sleep and dream without hurting you. I wont touch you until you want me to but would you like to take a bath with me?" he stammered over his words nervously as he talked. trying his best but rushing the words out.

 I just nodded in response and he pulled the rest of his clothes off. he took a hold of me and lifted me up before stepping into the tub and slowly crouching down to sit. "its a little warm Doll." he said before he placed me in between his legs. my back against his chest and his legs on either side of mine. the hot water stung for a moment but felt really amazing against my still sore skin. I hummed and leaned back against him, happy to feel his heart again, his warmth. his heart beat stammered for a few beats before he took a breath "you didn't ever call that guy, did you?" he asked. I turned my head to the side so I could look at him. "what guy?" I asked wondering what turned his mood to jealousy. "that guy that gave you his number while you and Nat were at the mall." he spoke matter of factly. I huffed out a small laugh "Really Bucky?" I rolled my eyes "I never called him. his number if probably still in my pants pocket in the laundry." said. he sighed and I laughed. "I've only ever been yours Bucky." I said kissing his shoulder. he sighed again and poured soap on a luffa and rubbed it in. he slowly began running it over my arms, across my shoulders, and down my legs. it felt good to have his hands on me.

 I let out a relaxed sigh as he washed the last 35 days from my body. the luffa found its way back up my body and he made it a point not to run it across any intimate body parts and it was honestly starting to torture me. I slowly ran my index finger up and down his inner thigh before grabbing the wrist that held the luffa and slowly made him run it over both of my breasts. I could felt his heart skip as I did so. I laid my head back against his shoulder closed my eyes and hummed as I slowly lead his hand down towards my center. the hand that I was leading to my core was his metal one. before I could reach he's hand where it needed to be he stopped "please baby, not this hand." he whispered. my eyes fluttered open to see his. "I love this hand, and there is nothing you can do about it. I love every part of you. I am still upset. but I'm more happy that you even here to began with. please touch me Bucky." I begged.

 his other hand creeped downward. he grabbed the Luffa with his flesh hand and cleaned my center gently. I let out a soft moan and quickly got over the fact that he switched hangs. he removed the luffa and let his hand wonder back down. he separated my folds with his thumb and pinky and his index finger made contact with my already acing clit. my mouth hung open as he started making slow circles with it. I sighed out a long moan as I felt my heat mix with the water in between my legs. I held a hard grip with each of my hands on each other Bucky's thighs. I felt him grow under my but as his one finger slowly took me just how I liked. when I came he lifted one my legs and hooked his metal arm around it holding it open as he slowly slid a finger into and curled it to hit my sweet spot. my mouth flew open as he did the same motion again but this time made sure the palm of his hand was still stimulating my tingling clit. I shook helplessly. "Mmmmm Bucky." I moaned and bit down on his shoulder. "shh shh shh. I got you, just relax. ill get you there again baby." he whispered sexy in my ear. I moaned again as he used multiple fingers to plunge in and out of me hotly. "fuck bucky Fuck Fuckk."  I practically screamed as I came hard again. "Fuck I love you!" I said backing up against his cock. he jumped. "we don't have to do me baby. I just want you to feel good." he said kissing my back in between my shoulder blades. 

" I want too!" I said quickly turning towards him and successfully sinking down on his hard thick shaft. he groaned and placed both his hand on my hips and leaned back against the tile wall. I slowly lifted up and back down on him over and over. I rested one hand on his shoulder for balance so I could move faster on his cock and I brought the other one up and around the back of his neck so I could pull him in for a long and sloppy kiss. "I love you...I love you... I love you!" I said against his lips each time I sunk down on him. "Fuck I love you too!" he said kissing down my face slowly reaching my neck. I smiled and closed my eyes as he turned the bathroom light out and walked into the bedroom. he moved the covers out of the way and slid our wet bodies inside and covered us up. "oh hold on!" he said leaning back over the bed and grabbing his pants off the floor. he grabbed a yellow pill bottle opened it and popped a pill. I rolled my eyes as he threw the jeans back on the ground and turned back to me. he wrapped me in his arms and pulled the covers back over us. "ill do whatever I can to never hurt you again baby. I am so sorry." he said kissing one of the many yellowy bruises on my neck. I smiled and turned to kiss him. "don't even worry about it. I'm with you, till the end of the line!" I said laying my head down on his chest, closing my eyes and slowly falling asleep finally back in his arms.

Dies Caniculares (Fic, Mikleo/Sorey, Fantasy/God AU) (Chapter 6/6)

Summary: Mikleo dreams of travelling the world, having exciting adventures like his uncle. Unfortunately, he lives a pretty boring life in the tiny mountain village of Camlann. Michael quietly crept through the temple grounds, with his newest purchase from the town bookshop tucked inside his robes. He touched the outline of it under his clothes, his skin tingling from excitement at the feel of the hardcover, and the weight of the volume. It promised many hours of entertainment and nourishment for the brain and soul, and was worth every penny spent. (Which was incidentally very lucky for Michael, as it was quite expensive.) There was just the matter of…finding a spot to enjoy it.

Grandmother didn’t approve of reading “frivolous” literature. Grandmother didn’t approve of Michael exploring the forest outside of town. Grandmother didn’t approve of Michael spending time on things that didn’t involve the temple. Grandmother didn’t approve of a lot of things, and Michael had long stopped keeping track. He just assumed anything that was of interest to him was forbidden, and would have to be enjoyed in secret.

The bookshop in town knew from a few visits by stern-faced temple staff that they should not be selling the Young Master Rulay such puerile nonsense. The bookshop in town also knew Michael as their best customer, and had enough business sense to keep a secret or two. Normally, Michael would take his newest book purchases to the Mabinogio Temple; to be devoured in an afternoon, and then carefully stored in a secret trunk, covered in a waterproof tarp – safely tucked away from the prying eyes of his grandmother and her lackeys at the temple. (He thought about bringing his little sister, sometimes, but she was really still too young to make the hike up. Maybe in a few years – in the meantime, he memorized the books and narrated them to her at her bedside at night.) But he had been looking for this book for months. He’d pestered the bookshop owner daily, asking if they’d found a copy yet, asking how long it might take, again and again until they stuffed some of the latest science and archaeology journals into his hands to make him go away. But today, his persistence finally paid off – they’d located a copy, ordered it, and it was here. He finally had it. He simply couldn’t wait to read it – couldn’t manage the hike up to the Mabinogio Temple without spontaneously combusting.

The temple grounds around Maotelus’ chambers were usually pretty quiet around this time of day. The high priests performed the cleansing ritual in the early morning, and presented offerings at sundown and sunset. He’d never been allowed up there – most people weren’t, except for the most senior priests – but he was a quick study, and easily found a secluded spot, hidden away from those approaching from the lone path up the hillside. As long as Michael was quick about reading, and kept an eye out, he should be able to get through at least the first quarter of the book – enough to tide him over until he could tear himself away long enough to properly enjoy it at Mabinogio.

This was, at least, the plan. But no sooner had Michael sat down in a shady spot underneath the shrine awnings was he interrupted.

“What’s it about?”

Michael nearly jumped out of his skin, and only just managed to stop himself from making a break for it. The voice, however, was very much unlike any of the temple attendants. It was soft, young-sounding…and seemed to be projected directly inside his head. Michael squinted suspiciously at Maotelus’ shrine, at its sturdy hardwood walls and lack of windows.  

“Your book. What’s it about?”

“…semiotics in pre-Asgard Era architecture,” Michael replied.

He heard the whisper of a page turning, and he spun around to see a pale white hand idly flipping through his book. His book. He scowled at the boy it was attached to; a boy that hadn’t been there a moment before, a boy no older than him. A boy with golden hair, dressed in dazzling white. His eyes were as green as the holy forest that surrounded the town.

“Sounds fascinating. But that’s quite a topic for someone your age,” said the boy.

“Look who’s talking,” Michael shot back.

The boy raised an eyebrow, but couldn’t help a smile from twitching at his mouth, nor a short titter of laughter.

“I guess you’ve got a point there. May I read with you?” asked the boy. “I’ll keep up with your pace, I promise.”

Michael seriously doubted that, even considering who he was speaking with. Michael was a very fast reader.

“…I guess,” Michael said. “As long as you keep an eye out for anyone coming. And as long as you don’t tell anyone I was here.”

The boy laughed again. It was a sound that seemed like it could make flowers bloom from dry soil.

“Of course. My lips are sealed.”

It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. However, it was a friendship that had to be kept pretty firmly under wraps – Michael was very certain that this would fall under the category of the many things his grandmother didn’t approve of, and knew that he couldn’t tell a single soul about it; not even his little sister Muse. The idea of being forbidden from seeing his dear friend (“Call me Mao,” he’d told him) was soon something Michael couldn’t bear to think of. He’d never met anyone who was so easy to talk to, or so interested in whatever he had to say. He was interested in books, and traveling the world. And…it was nice, having this special secret. Having Mao all to himself, in this way. It seemed like he was almost made just for Michael. Everyone knew Maotelus from the etchings and grand banners that decorated the temples, from the prayer books and lucky charms, as a grand white dragon. Michael had never heard anyone speak of Mao as Mao, as the golden-haired boy who would tell Michael stories of far-flung places that Michael had only ever dreamed of seeing. The boy who would share with Michael the offerings presented to him by the priests, who always gave Michael a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on.

Sometimes, it seemed as though he’d never be able to leave this tiny town. When his grandmother passed, the honor of heading the temple was set to fall on Michael’s shoulders when he came of age – his mother was of Rulay lineage, but had little in the way of spiritual potential; especially when compared to her two children. It was simply logical to pass the title to Michael.

It almost seemed selfish of him to even consider leaving. He would be forcing Muse to take on the matter of running the temple, and leaving her behind. What’s more, he would be leaving Mao behind, without anyone there to keep him company, to share stories with him, to read with him…

“How has Muse been holding up? And little Mikleo.”

Michael shook his head and sighed. “She…she’s about as well as anyone could be, considering. I doubt Mikleo understands what’s happened – though I think he’s starting to chafe at all the extra attention and fretting.”

Muse’s husband was a good man, and it was a tragedy that Mikleo would never know him. But, though the never knowing was an ache unto itself, the knowing and loss was a far greater one. Perhaps it was a mercy.

Mao nodded. “She’s strong. And very capable. She’ll be able to manage the temple on her own easily, I think.”

Michael gave him a look. “Is this your way of threatening to fire me?”

Mao pursed his lips and blew a puff of silver flame into Michael’s face – it was painless, and smelled thickly of warm, smoky incense. Michael’s hair fluttered back into place as the warm air dissipated.

“Perish the thought,” Mao said. “But you’re going to have to start planning that journey of yours soon.”

The very idea set Michael’s teeth on edge, and made his heart ache in his chest.

“I can’t just dump everything on Muse and walk off,” Michael said. “Not now.”

“In a year or two, then. When you’ve had a chance to study and prepare.”

“But—”

“You and I both know that Muse already does the lion’s share of work around here,” Mao said drily. “I’m sure she wouldn’t really mind having the title of temple head officially.”

Michael lowered his chin, hiding his expression.

“Mikleo isn’t the only one Muse is hovering over right now. She won’t let me out of her sight, either. There’s no way she’d…she’d be up every night, fretting over where I was, whether I was safe.”

He felt Mao’s small white hand touch the back of his own. He’d never aged a day, ever since that fateful afternoon.

“I have to admit that I understand her concerns,” Mao said. “Which is why I’ll be watching over you personally.”

Before Michael could say a word, Mao pressed his hand to his chest; over his heart. The warmth that flooded into him was – overwhelming, like the sun on a brilliant summer day. It poured into every limb, every cell, every part of his being. He could hear his heartbeat and Mao’s heartbeat and the heartbeat of the earth itself; the buzzing pulse of the land and all its creation. In that moment, everything was linked – he could feel Muse’s grief and determination, Mikleo’s innocent love, his confusion and loneliness. He could feel a lingering sorrow, and a forlorn hope; a man’s voice: She’s a stronger woman than you realize. She will stand tall. But please – won’t you spend a few more years with my wife and son, to be certain they’re well? He’s still so young, and so lonely—

“Hey, come on. I don’t want to have to call the priests up here…”

Michael’s vision swam back into focus. He clutched at the still-burning pulse in his chest, and stared at Mao, wide-eyed, waiting for an explanation. Mao breathed a sigh of relief, and, though exhaustion was plain on his face, so was an expression of satisfaction.

“I’ve shared part of my power with you,” he explained. “No matter where you go, no matter how far you travel, we’ll always be connected. I’ll always be able to protect you – you need fear no injury, no disease, no thirst or starvation. Should you travel so far that you arrive at another continent, and another god’s domain, they will sense my power in you and aid you.”

Michael crawled upright; leaning heavily on Mao, who permitted the affront to his heavenly dignity, as he always did. Finally, Michael was on his feet, and was able to breathe deeply enough to clear his head.

“Mao…you…”

Mao raised an eyebrow. “If you’re going to try and get me to go back on this, I’ll have you know that I don’t want to hear it. No takesies-backsies. I may have let you leave Camlann without a blessing a few years ago, but you’re pushing thirty, and I don’t want you breaking your hip out there.”

Helpless laughter bubbled out of Michael’s chest, and he sank to his knees heavily to bundle Mao into a tight hug. Mao returned the embrace, with vigor.

“Always connected, huh?” Michael asked. “So I can argue with you about journals even from a thousand miles away?”

“I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” Mao replied.

And so, Michael stayed a few more years in town to put the temple and family affairs in order before setting off on his journey. Muse worried, as was her way, but – true to form – she stood tall and determined, managing the temple with ease and brilliance. Mikleo devoured tales of his uncle’s travels, and soon, his kind heart and inquisitive nature earned him a lifelong friend and companion. This is a story you surely already know.

This brings us to the matter of Maotelus and his condition.

A god of the land must extend their power to bless their domain – it is a sleepless, eternal affair, and a constant drain on one’s energy; even one as mighty as a god. Without this protection, the land and all its inhabitants would fall to the rot of malevolence, to the cruel whims of the weather and humanity’s carelessness. This godly power is regained through human worship, and through the tireless efforts of the temple staff – every bit of malevolence attended to by the priests and attendants was a tiny bit of the load off a god’s back.

The temple at Camlann was well-managed, and its staff tireless. The people of Camlann were faithful and dutiful. By all means, Maotelus should have remained in good health for many years. But his generous gift to Michael came with a cost that he did not anticipate.

Expending so much power at once – essentially creating a walking domain, and one that indeed walked very, very far; over hill and dale and far away – sent Maotelus into a deficit of health that he could not ever quite manage to climb out of. Day by day, year by year, the deficit and its burden grew heavier and heavier. Maotelus in his godly form, once a grand white dragon the size of the temple itself, shrank smaller and smaller. There were few people to comment on it; few people who came calling, and fewer still who spoke to him with such familiarity and care as Michael had. He suffered quietly, and unnoticed.

Maotelus could sleep for a little while – a short nap, five or ten years, perhaps – to regain his strength and be well once more. But without his full attention, the land would waste away…and he could sense a foul air from Ladylake, the scent of greed and corruption growing ever stronger. He would have to remain awake, and vigilant; keeping one eye on that city and one eye on the town, and an eye on the mountains and surrounding lands, and an eye on Michael as well, and an eye on Muse and Mikleo, to keep his promise, and…

He could also just summon Michael back to Camlann, revoke his blessing, and re-absorb his power. It was certainly an idea that crossed Mao’s mind, as things grew dire – his duty was to the land and its people, not one man. Even so, Mao could never quite bring himself to it. What if such a thing wound up hurting Michael, or even killing him? Yanking godly power from a mortal’s chest was surely not without its consequences. He did not breathe a word of it, or of any of his struggles, to Michael when he came by yearly to visit.

If this course of events was allowed to continue, he would surely die, and the land along with him. Maotelus was at a loss. He was backed into a corner, with no one to turn to.

That is, until that young, wandering dog god came to town…

“…we became pretty good friends over the years, and after a while, he asked me a favor,” Sorey continued to explain. “He didn’t want to put any of this on me, but he had no choice. While Mao sleeps, I’ll be the land god in his place.”

There were no dramatic gasps or shouts of surprise – the three gathered humans simply continued to stare at Sorey, still trying to process his story, and what was happening. Sorey scratched at his ear, shifting his weight from foot to foot at the awkward silence. Maotelus snoozed peacefully in his arms. Sorey thought he should probably find a nice pillow or cat bed to put him on while he rested.

“I-it’s only temporary, until he’s done regaining his strength…you won’t have to change up any of the temple rituals or rewrite any of the prayers. I’m sorry I didn’t tell anyone sooner, but Mao told me not to, and…and there wasn’t anything anyone could have done…”

“No,” Michael said quietly. “There was.”

Sorey frowned, then approached Michael, with Maotelus in his arms. He waited until the man looked him in the eyes.

“Uncle Michael. You’re so precious to Mao. Take it from another god – when we grow fond of a mortal, there’s no force in heaven or earth that will keep us from trying to make them happy.”

Michael stared at Sorey, then cast a quick side-eyed look to Muse and Mikleo.

“Oh,” Mikleo said almost absently. “Uncle Michael, meet Sorey. He’s not actually a dog.”

“I really love your work,” Sorey said sincerely. “And hearing your travel stories. And your belly-rubs.”

“Ah,” Michael said quietly, rather unruffled by the revelation. He was pretty hard to fluster in general, and the whole Maotelus situation was taking up his Fluster Quota for the moment.

Sorey held out the sleeping Maotelus, and Michael slowly, haltingly, accepted him into his arms. Maotelus continued to sleep; not stirring a bit from the pass-off.

“He didn’t want to tell you. He didn’t want to hurt you by taking back his power, or to force you to give up your dream,” Sorey explained. “He just wants to protect you and this town, and to make everyone happy. This place is his home, after all. And…it’s mine now, too. My home, and…and Mikleo’s.”

Muse seemed to snap out of the shock of the situation, and – with a determination and resolve that had kept the temple strong even through Maotelus’ secret illness – took the helm to steer them back onto a proper path.

“I will call for an emergency meeting of the most senior staff and we will be up to perform the purification ritual shortly,” Muse stated. She bowed low to Sorey. “We will also arrange a spot for Lord Maotelus to sleep safely; a spot that suits the radiance of his station.”

Sorey supposed that meant they probably wouldn’t be okay with him sleeping on a cat bad. But, as long as Mao was safe and comfortable during his rest, Sorey was happy.

Michael sat down in the shrine, Maotelus still in his arms – he clearly wasn’t going to be much for any further conversation. Sorey gave Mikleo a meaningful glance, and they both quietly left the shrine; leaving the two of them alone for a moment until the priests came up. And so they, too, were alone – outside the shrine, listening to the wind rustle the trees.

The silence was…awkward. Sorey supposed that was to be expected – they’d both had a pretty busy twenty-four hours. Sorey reached out for Mikleo’s hand; his heart warming as Mikleo’s fingers curled around his own. He smiled bright and warm at him, and leaned in to press a kiss to that lovely jawline.

“This is good, right?” Sorey asked. “Your mom won’t pressure you anymore. She knows about me, and…and us. And now that Uncle Michael is here, you can go with him whenever he’s ready to leave—”

“Sorey.” Mikleo’s voice was soft and reassuring, and horribly gentle. “I can’t leave.”

Sorey’s heart dropped into his stomach. “But…you can, your mother said she was okay with it…and, and Maotelus’ protection is still on Michael, so you’ll both be safe on the road…”

Mikleo squeezed his hand. “There’s no point if you’re not by my side. It’s fine, Sorey. I’ll stay here with you, to support you.”

Sorey understood on an intellectual level why Maotelus hadn’t called Michael back to town, even if it was for the good of his whole domain. And now, he understood it on an emotional level.

“Mikleo. Please,” Sorey begged. “It’s always been your dream, ever since we met…you have to go with your uncle, and see the world.”

“It’s fine,” Mikleo said, more firmly. “You’ll need support while Maotelus sleeps. Ten or fifteen years is nothing.”

“It’s something when you’ve always wanted to travel with your uncle. He’s not as young as he used to be, Mikleo – in ten or fifteen years, he’ll be in no state to travel, even with Mao’s blessing. And…what if it’s not just a few years? What if I’m not strong enough to help Mao, and you’re just waiting here, for twenty, thirty years, or…”

Sorey’s voice faltered at the very thought of it. Mikleo stroked his cheek, and trailed the touch up and back to pet his hair, until Sorey’s breathing calmed.

“Do you really think I can just leave you here, after all that’s happened?” Mikleo asked. He sounded so hurt, so confused. “After what happened last night? For god’s sake, Sorey, even without all that, you’re still my closest friend, and you think that I somehow can just…pack up and leave with a smile on my face…”

“You’ve been stuck here so long,” Sorey said mournfully. “I’ve seen how much it tears you up, how much you resented it. I can’t…I can’t stand to have you resent me…”

Mikleo’s fingers loosened around Sorey’s hand.

“You said that Maotelus told you about his predicament ages ago,” Mikleo said. “Honestly, were you just planning on letting me leave town without you this whole time? Were you ever really planning on coming with me?”

Sorey swallowed hard and grasped for Mikleo’s retreating hand. “Mikleo. I was, I swear I was.”

“It’s fine,” Mikleo repeated. “All I ever wanted was a choice, and it’s my choice now to stay. Don’t feel guilty.”

A retinue of priests was making their way up to the shrine, bearing flasks of holy water, scrolls, incense, sacred bells. Mikleo rose to his feet, and bowed deeply to Sorey.

“The priests will perform the purification ritual,” Mikleo said. “If you’ll excuse me, someone still needs to convince Alisha to untie herself.”

The week passed in a blur.

There was work to be done, and every caretaker of the shrine, from the most novice attendant to the highest of priests, was on deck to handle it. The changing god – even though it was only a temporary arrangement – was utterly unprecedented, and the tension it created was palpable. Even so, Sorey seemed to be a natural at the position. With Maotelus’ lingering power as his support, amplifying his own, the dark fog of malevolence that lingered in town – lurking in corners and staining the fields, a persistent blackness that could not seem to be purified even with dozens of blessings – was finally chased away.

On the topic of the chasing-away of persistent annoyances, the surveying team from Ladylake was also forcibly ejected from the holy mountain. But this was not due to Sorey’s power – although his domain fortified the land they sought to desecrate, it was not in Sorey’s nature to bring down anything resembling heavenly wrath. Fortunately, Alisha was more than happy to serve the purpose when informed of her countrymen’s illegal presence and nefarious designs on the mountain’s holy grounds, and their cruel and undignified treatment of her dear friend’s uncle. Steeled with purpose, and high on the feeling of being recognized by the heavens for her pillar-tying vigil, she set out into the forest with the full intent of chasing the surveyors all the way back to Ladylake on foot.

And, fortunately, Mikleo was able to get ahold of Rose before Alisha made her dream a reality. With Rose’s assistance and support, they quickly apprehended the team and extracted a full confession of their misdeeds and Mayor Diphda’s involvement in the plot. (Mikleo knew better than to ask Rose about her information-gathering methods, if he wanted to still be able to sleep at night.) It was quick, and bloodless, for which Mikleo was thankful. He had always been concerned about keeping the land as free from unnecessary bloodshed as possible; to ensure Maotelus’ good health. But, he now had an even more personal investment.

“Don’t worry,” Rose assured him before they left. “I’ll see to it that these chumps and their boss see justice. You’ve got enough on your plate right now.”

She and Alisha were headed back to Ladylake with the captured team, accompanied by a retinue of priests – to testify against the trespassers on Camlann land. Mikleo had faith that justice would be served.

“Thank you,” Mikleo said. “You’ve done Camlann a great service, and we remain in your debt.”

Rose winked and poked Mikleo in the chest lightly. “Now, don’t say things like that to me unless you really mean it. I could think of a lot of ways you guys could repay me, but…I’ll take a while to settle on it.”

“…during our march, I beseech you to reflect on your misdeeds; not only snubbing your nose at the heavens, but also not caring a whit about the well-being of your fellow man…” Alisha went on, lecturing their captives.

“Just make sure she doesn’t tie herself to a tree trunk in the forest on the way down,” Mikleo said wearily.

Rose sighed, but Mikleo saw the fond smile on her face, and the look in her eyes as she gazed at Alisha.

“You don’t need to tell me.”

Another week passed, and Mikleo worked, and worked, and worked. He led teams to comb the town looking for lingering taint; inspecting everything with a fretful, obsessive eye, as if he was a new bride cleaning house for her in-laws’ first visit. Truthfully, he needed something to fill the hours – his schedule had been freed up quite considerably. No more dates to waste his time and test his patience. No more arguments. No more days out at the waterfall. No more lazy afternoons sharing snacks at the Mabinogio Temple. No more evenings in the temple garden, quietly watching the stars come out. No more late nights reading. No more hours spent picking feathers out of his bedsheets and clothes. No more sleep lost because of a dog snoring in his ear in bed. Mikleo didn’t quite know what to do with himself, anymore.

“How is Michael doing?” Sorey asked, in a small, hopeful voice. “Do you think he’ll be going back on the road soon?”

Michael was not one to malinger, and – to Muse’s great annoyance – he had been hobbling around the temple grounds in a matter of days after his encounter with the intruders on the mountain.

“He’s almost fully recovered, and should be leaving in a few days,” Mikleo confirmed. “He’s up at the Mabinogio Temple today, doing restoration work.”

“You’ve done so much work on it over the years yourself,” Sorey said earnestly. “Does he—”

“He’s noticed,” Mikleo interrupted, curtly. “And had a few disagreements with me on some of our restoration choices.”

Sorey shifted uncomfortably at Mikleo’s tone. Or perhaps it was discomfort from the elaborate robes he had been given to wear as part of his new station. They were beautiful – the intricate embroidered swirls, the delicate feather trim, the flow of the voluminous sleeves, and the flutter of tails at the back as he walked. They were also so very unsuited to Sorey – Mikleo couldn’t count how many times Sorey had nearly tripped on the hem of the robes when he was trying to get down the stairs to greet him. And they got dirty so easily…not that Mikleo had the privilege of being the one to provide Sorey with his ritual baths, anymore. It was no longer his duty to care for Sorey, to tend to him and help him with his day-to-day needs – that was the domain of the high priests.  

He just didn’t quite know what to do with himself, anymore.

“Maybe…you could talk it out with him a little more?” Sorey offered.

“He’ll be leaving in a few days, like I said. No one has ever managed to change Uncle Michael’s mind on an academic subject that quickly.”

“…w-well, you could always…talk it out on the road?”

“No,” Mikleo said. “Not a possibility.”

“But—”

The sun was setting. Mikleo went to his knees and bowed deeply to Sorey, pressing his forehead to the hem of those lovely, completely unsuitable robes.

“Thank you for taking the time to speak to me, my lord,” Mikleo murmured. “I will take my leave so you are able to retire.”

“Mikleo.” Sorey’s voice was so quiet, so defeated. “Please.”

Mikleo looked up at him from under the fall of his hair, and, without breaking eye contact, lifted the hem of Sorey’s robes to his lips to kiss.

He could live a happy life, here, at Sorey’s feet. He would be happy, and fulfilled.

But he hoped every day that his uncle would be well enough to leave as soon as possible, without him, so the nagging longing in his chest would finally cease.

Soon, the time had come: Michael was well enough to begin his journey once more; well enough that even Muse admitted he was more than ready to strike out. There was the matter of gathering supplies for the road, and Michael requested Mikleo’s assistance in town to that end.

“You know, your mother told me that she’s given you her blessing. I would have thought you’d have leapt at the chance to leave.”

Mikleo went quiet, and turned over the box of granola bars in his hand, as if pretending to be engrossed in its nutritional facts.

“…I would have thought that, too,” Mikleo finally admitted. “Not too long ago.”

Michael looked at him expectantly. “…well? What’s stopping you? Adventure and wonder await, and all that. You’re younger than I was when I first set out, so you’ve still got that idiocy to power you along through sleepless nights. I have to admit that it’d be a bonus having someone with youth on their side along.”

“Uncle…” Mikleo began, and trailed off. He couldn’t quite put his feelings into words.

“I’m admittedly not the most pleasant company all the time,” Michael said. “If the various archaeological and historical communities have any merit to their complaints about me. But I have a feeling that’s not why you’re hesitating.”

“How can you…” Mikleo set the box down, and leaned heavily against the shelf. “How can you just leave him? After all he’s sacrificed for you? How can you just pack up and go, as if everything’s perfectly normal? After you’ve spent your whole life with him, after you’ve shared everything with him, after you promised to see the world with him and now you can’t and might never be able to, and…”

Michael’s expression went soft, and he allowed Mikleo to settle himself before reaching out a hand to gently touch his shoulder – lightly, giving him space to shrug him off if needed.

“Mao gave me his blessing with the explicit direction to see the world, and fulfill my dreams,” Michael said. “He just about kicked me out the door in the process, and was so determined that I keep at it that…we are where we are now. If I gave up now and hung around here just waiting around for him, I’d never hear the end of it when he does wake up – and when he does, I’ll have stories for him, and more books under my belt, and a satisfaction that means I’ll never need to leave him again. I’ll have spent my life doing what I love, instead of torturing myself, and building up resentment. Resentment isn’t a good look on anyone, especially a priest – you’re supposed to clean up malevolence, no? Not drag it everywhere you go like you stepped in something.”

Mikleo was quiet.

“But…”

“If I gave you a pair of hiking boots, and you never wore them – just stacked them on your shelf to make sure they never got worn out or scuffed – is that really how I wanted my gift to be used? I’m thankful for everything Mao has done for me, and this is my way of proving it.”

“This isn’t about hiking boots,” Mikleo said with no little disdain.

“It isn’t,” Michael agreed. “And I know you’re smart enough to understand a metaphor when you hear one.”

“Mikleo. You have a date this afternoon.”

Now that was a phrase Mikleo had thought he’d never have to hear again. Moreover, this was hardly the time – Michael was leaving tomorrow, and on top of that, there were appointments to tend to. Mikleo raised an eyebrow at his mother.

“I know,” Muse said, holding up her hands in a gesture of surrender. “I promised. But I simply couldn’t refuse – they were very insistent that they be given a chance. They’ll be waiting at the Spring Breeze. I re-assigned your appointments to other priests. Try to enjoy yourself, won’t you?  And be on your best behavior.”

Very insistent, indeed. The Spring Breeze wasn’t even open during the daytime, normally – this girl must have slipped Zaveid a tidy sum to get him to get him to deviate from his usual daytime schedule of keeping house and visiting the elementary school where Lailah taught. Whatever the case was, Mikleo was no longer on the market – which wasn’t something that had been formally announced to the town, of course, for obvious reasons. Mikleo was in a certain mood today – a mood of aching nostalgia and thwarted longing at Michael’s impending departure. He would have loved to be left alone to brood, but he would spare a few minutes to go to the bar, get a drink, and gently turn down this determined creature. Perhaps she could spread the word about his removal from the dating market, so he wouldn’t have to.

He sighed deeply as he stood in front of the bar’s door, and rolled his shoulders once before stepping inside.

“Mikleo! Good to see you,” Zaveid greeted him warmly. “You got quite a honey waiting for you, let me just—”

He scrutinized Mikleo up and down; straightening his clothes and collar, wiping Mikleo’s face with a warm washcloth and spinning him around once before he apparently passed muster as being date-ready. Satisfied, Zaveid bowed at the waist, and gestured to a table tucked into the corner; decorated with a fine tablecloth and a vase of fresh flowers, and where Mikleo’s date was waiting for him.

“I hope you found your way here okay,” Sorey said.

Sorey. A date, with Sorey. Mikleo could hardly hear his thoughts over his racing heart, and he stood rooted to the floor where he stood; staring at the sight before him. Sorey was dressed in a yukata that suited him just perfectly; the cut highlighting the strong line of his shoulders and broadness of his chest, the dark blue pattern setting off the sparkling gold of his hair. His movements flowed so gracefully and easily; the fabric looked like it had been tailored just for him – had his mother been plotting this all along, sewing and scheming late at night these past few weeks? Mikleo felt so horribly underdressed for the occasion. Before he could run off (or stand there staring any longer), Zaveid intervened and shoved him forward; marching him over to the table with his hands on his shoulders.

“Go on now. Be a gentleman, don’t keep him waiting.”

Mikleo sat heavily in the chair across from Sorey, and stared open-mouthed for a few moments before collecting himself enough to speak.

“I…Sorey, what is all of this…?”

Sorey sniffed and leaned back in his chair, crossing his legs primly and folding his hands in his lap.

“Is this how you treat all your dates?” Sorey asked in mock-offense. “Come on. You’re supposed to ask me about myself.”

Mikleo laughed helplessly – laughed for the first time in weeks, it seemed.

“Honestly, Sorey…okay, okay.”

Mikleo stood up, bowed at the waist, and held out his hand to Sorey. Sorey gave Mikleo his hand without hesitation, and Mikleo gave it a brief squeeze before leaning in to kiss his knuckles. He gazed at Sorey from under his lashes.

“It’s a pleasure to be asked out by someone so lovely. I hope you weren’t waiting too long.”

The gesture seemed to rob Sorey of that confidence he’d had just a few moments ago. Sorey squeaked and turned beet red, and cradled his kissed hand to his chest when Mikleo finally released it. “N-no. Not at all. I was just, you know, catching up on some reading…”

“Oh?” Mikleo asked. “What kind of things are you interested in reading?”

“Um. Well.”

Sorey took a moment to compose himself. Finally, he settled his dear hand in his lap, and gave Mikleo a shy smile.

“History books and travel journals are probably my personal favorites, but I secretly really love romance novels and poetry. Don’t make fun of me, okay?”

“I wouldn’t dream of it,” Mikleo assured him. “Have you ever told anyone about that except for me?”

“No…no, I thought I’d get teased for it. The place where I live has a pretty big library, but not much in that category. A few, though. I’ve read them so many times, I could probably quote them word-for-word. I always secretly hoped they’d get more.”

“I can’t imagine how anyone could ever say no to you,” Mikleo said. “I’m sure your housemates would give you anything you asked for.”

Sorey laughed and reached up to play with his feather earring. “Well, I hear ‘no’ often enough. I need it sometimes, though. My housemate looks after me, and keeps me in line.”

Sorey reached out, stroked his fingers over the back of Mikleo’s hand.

“Enough about me, though. I want to hear more about you. What do you like to do in your free time? I’ve heard that your schedule is usually pretty packed.”

“Well,” Mikleo said. “I’m interested in historical preservation. I keep the nearby temple in the mountains, and like to unwind at the waterfall that’s around there. I like cooking, when I get the chance; desserts are my specialties. I like to read, as well. Travel and history.”

“I bet your vanilla ice cream is just the best,” Sorey said dreamily. “But I’m glad you have so much that you’re passionate about. Where do you think you see yourself in five or ten years?”

Mikleo raised an eyebrow. “Sorey. Is this a date or a job interview?”

“If we’re going to work in the long-term, I need to know what your career goals are,” Sorey said. “My family would never approve of me marrying a man without good prospects.”

Family…yes, of course Sorey had family of his own. Mikleo had known from the start that Sorey was a descendant of the great lord Zenrus, so it shouldn’t have been a surprise to hear. Regardless, Mikleo couldn’t help but blanch a bit, his heart skipping at the thought of having to prove himself to heavenly in-laws. He was from a well-established family, and had a good job, and had proper manners…but was that really enough to impress a whole family of gods?

Mikleo shook off the feeling. That could wait a few years. Right now, Sorey had asked him a question.

“I see myself with the one I love,” Mikleo said. “And you?”

Sorey cupped Mikleo’s hand, and covered it with his own.

“I want the one I love to be happy, even if him being happy means that we have to be apart for a little while,” he said. “I want him to be true to himself, and follow what he’s always dreamed of. And, since I can’t go with him right now, I want to take care of the home I share with him, to make sure that it’s even more beautiful when he comes back to me. I know he’ll come back, no matter what. And I’ll be right at the gates waiting to welcome him home.”

Mikleo couldn’t quite keep his hand from shaking. Sorey stroked his thumb over it, which only seemed to make it worse. Suddenly, Sorey was rising from his seat, rounding the table, and drawing Mikleo close to his chest, making soothing noises and stroking his hair. Mikleo tried to will the tears from his eyes before they stained Sorey’s beautiful clothes.

“Sorey,” Mikleo sobbed. “It won’t be the same without you. It won’t be right.”

“Mikleo…” Sorey sighed. “Have you ever wondered why we can change form? To make ourselves look like humans, or like other living things?”

Mikleo stared up at Sorey with swollen, red eyes.

“I…” he croaked out. He cleared his throat. “I, I suppose I’ve wondered, but…I thought it was just a…godly…thing.”

“I never really understood it, either,” Sorey admitted. “I mean, worship from humans and other creatures makes us strong, and helps us care for our domains. But we can live without it, especially if we don’t have any sort of domain we need to maintain – like me, when I was walking the earth. I loved watching humans, but it was always from afar. I was too afraid to get closer. And then I met a little boy who gave me his wet coat, and then I was able to take on this form, and…I understood. Taking on a human form lets us connect with humans, connect with other living creatures that we’ve bonded with, in a way that we never could otherwise. It lets us live by your side, and…and, u-um, start families, if you’re interested in that kind of thing…”

Mikleo’s mind barely had time to process the idea before Sorey continued.

“…and, that connection…it can let you live by my side, too. Forever, if you want it.”

If Mikleo had just heard him right, Sorey had just offered Mikleo a family, and eternity. Mikleo could scarcely believe his ears.

“You wouldn’t age, or get sick. You wouldn’t feel hunger or thirst. But…it can only be you, Mikleo. Just you, and no one else.” Sorey dropped his gaze, guilty. “Your friends and family would pass on without you. They’d go on to the next life, and you’d never see them again.”

There were tears at the edges of Sorey’s eyes, now. The sight made Mikleo’s heart fall from his chest.

“It’s just like I was afraid of, all those years. I wanted you to be by my side forever, but I could never ask that of you. It just…wasn’t right.”

“Sorey.” Mikleo went to his knees in front of Sorey, and took his hand in his own. “Are you asking me now?”

The look on Sorey’s face was one of perfect surprise, before it crumpled into tears. Mikleo nuzzled into Sorey’s palm, pressing kisses there, murmuring gentle reassurances while Sorey wept.

“Sorey. Please, ask me.”

Sorey shook his head fiercely, his earrings jingling with the motion.

“You don’t know what you’re asking, you don’t…you’ll see them grow old and die and you’ll have to just keep going, and there’ll be no one left who remembers them, and no one who understands…”

“I’ll have you. And you’ll have me,” Mikleo swore. “Forever.”

Sorey buried his face in his sleeve for a moment, then took a deep, shuddering breath. He lowered his arm, and his face was a mask of godly composure, with an underlying determination that brooked no argument.

“Travel with your uncle, see the world, and return to me in five years. Tell me stories, bring back gifts and treasures from your journey. After that, I’ll ask you. And you can accept, or deny. But no matter what your choice is, please remember that I’ll always be with you.”

Mikleo bowed low, pressing his forehead to the ground before Sorey’s feet.

“Yes, my lord. It will be as you say.”

There was still time to prepare to leave with Michael, and to explain the situation to his mother. Mikleo’s mind raced with thoughts of all that needed to be done – packing, planning, budgeting for all the romance and poetry books he’d be sending home. He rose to his feet, and gathered Sorey into his arms; hugging him tightly. Sorey returned the embrace with just as much fervor.

“Please be safe,” Sorey whispered. “Mao’s protection will be on you both, but…”

“I will,” Mikleo assured him. “We will. Can I ask something of you, as well?”

I know i complain a lot about this & i know i may not know everything but what i do know has just continued to piss me off.

I used to use this tumblr partially just to rb stuff but also to dump shit that was on my mind kinda like a livejournal (i used to have one). I liked having it out in the open so that if ppl out there were going through something similar they could see they weren't alone in experience or in having no idea of what to do. For the past few years every time i wanted to do that i had to second guess myself bc my stepmom thought it was ok to find my blog & creep on it without letting me know until she came across something she wasn't happy with. After she told me that, i tried to change as much in my privacy settings, short of deleting my blog entirely, to prevent her from snooping if she wasn't going to respect me. I still don't know if any of it worked. For all i know she could still be.

My mind is often plagued by the time I was reaching out to my parents when i was facing homelessness, like serious homelessness. Not the summer homelessness i had already been enduring for the 5yrs prior. I'm talking i couldn't get a full time job & was barely surviving on part time work at Marshall's for minimum wage & no benefits. Im talking i was lucky i had any savings left over after college bc most got ate up - literally. Im talking i worked through college to feed myself, PLUS was an RA to cover housing fees, plus a full time student. My first apartment i was living in a large closet. As a sublet. Paying twice as much rent as i should have been. And got robbed a half a months rent.

When i was already reaching out to social services i also reached out to my parents for advice. I said nothing about money nothing about moving onto their couch. Just guidance. They came back at me with "we can't help you". They made it seem like i was asking them to carry me. I felt at that point the only option i had with what experience i had was to run away back to school. Which meant literally doubling the debt i already had. The only reason i wasn't paying into the debt at the time was i was literally too poor to.

Going back to school was great i terms of i had money finally & got to move back to salem & afford living alone. But if you're running away TO school...you don't want to go to school you want to run away. I wasn't ready, i was just desperate. So the plan failed, i failed, i ran away again. I was exceptionally "lucky" this place had jobs open.

But what im on about tonight is the info i found about my parents & their money. Now mind you when i say my parents i mean my dad & his wife. My real mom been dead long time. SHE was poor. SHE raised my sister & i primarily alone. We had food bank & food stamps & free/reduced breakfast lunch & hand-me-downs from neighbors. That's how I grew up. So when my stepmom tried to deny that we grew up poor I cut her out of my life. Haven't spoken to her in years & only just spoke to my dad for first time in years my last birthday. I sadly regret taking the call bc it was just "when you gonna move your stuff out". After years of not talking. All he could think about was that. My stuff which mind you they stuffed into a corner of a mouse-infested garage so inevitably a lot of my stuff is now rat-nestings. They couldn't spare a single one of their several fuckin rooms IN THE HOUSE.

Tonight i was bored & thought what if i can look up info on how much they couldn't help me when i was broke. Turns out they make over 220k a yr, with AT MOST one employee besides themselves to pay (didn't even pay them enough imo) & pay thousands in property taxes for property they do literally nothing with & for a house with FIVE FUCKIN BEDROOMS AND THREE BATHROOMS FOR JUST THE TWO OF THEM TO LIVE THERE & NEVER INVITE ANYONE OVER BC THEY HATE COMPANY. That is their SECOND house mind you (last i checked with my dad they are looking at buying their third jfc). But they couldn't help their own child. And yes I understand running a private business costs money. I also understand that they don't get weekly checks, it's all depending on what cases they can get/win. They always acted like they had less money than they do though. Many years they worked out of the house so there was no extra rent to pay. I've been working in my current job for over 5yrs & I am just now finally making 35k/yr after many union fights.

I can't find it in my heart to forgive them. Had mom still been alive she would have stripped their small intestines right out of their ass for turning a cold shoulder. They didn't offer any advice or help when I asked except dad tell me to sign up for the military. Which goes to show how much they actually thought about me considering I am not allowed to join the military even if I wanted to bc I am transgender. I know for a fact bc i did still have to sign up for selective service when I applied for a loan for grad school & they sent a letter back rejecting me. But I still got to sign up for the debt 🥴 It was further disturbing considering my parents have always been very anti-military. It felt like a real "go fuck yourself" response & I've never been able to shake that or been able to properly explain to them how that felt. They don't get it & they don't care bc they think it's"good for me" or "builds character". I don't think either of them have ever faced the experience my sister & esp I have. Their standards seemed to revolve only around what they wanted me to do & not at all around what I need. But had the audacity to criticize politicians doing the same thing.

The work they do is great, & I'm proud of that. They've fought to provide social security & disability support to those who need it. But what sense does it make that you're more willing to help strangers than you are your own family?

They never even visited me up here. Not once.

I hate this country i hate my family i hate money i hate bullshit. All that i care about are cats/nature, food, & weed. Everything else is a waste of my patience. And i know there are ppl out there doing good things doing right by those they love, but that shit doesn't "heal" me like it does everyone else. Basic kindness shouldn't be such a commodity.

I've spent every year ive been working here saving as much money as I can without completely neglecting myself. I've had set backs primarily due to my health. But as far as i see it I am the only safety net i have at this point. I have no life. I don't even know how to have a life anymore. Quarantine didn't even phase me bc I already had no life to give up & still had to show up to work like regular.

It's no fuckin wonder ive had so much suicidal ideation over the years, I've nowhere I feel I can turn where i feel 100% trust.

AND I'M PRIVILEGED AF. I am white, I have a steady job & a union, I am making more money more consistently than I ever have before. Getting here has been hell & terrifying. Being shown that my parents really aren't there for me, finding out that I'm actually terribly alone in the world, & literally just having to double down on being my own best friend. It definitely ices the heart & cuts the elasticity of the tolerance.

Part of me really wants to just lay into them for this bullshit. But other part of me is like what for? If they would feel bad they should already. But they don't & won't. So I just gotta move on & ignore their calls.

Adrenaline pumped as your feet hit the pavement. You tried to concentrate on the feel of the concrete under your feet, the burn in your muscles, and the wind in your face. You were out earlier than normal, but sleep had given up on you hours ago. This beat tossing and turning in your bed, wallowing in guilt. You had done nothing wrong. The two of you were both willing and grown adults. You were single, he was single, or so you told yourself. But you knew that in your mind, you were still tied to Takao. Regardless of his new engagement, he was…. No you couldn’t think like that. Refusing to even entertain the thought, you sped up, not even caring that you were hitting the pavement harder than your ankles appreciated.

AHHH why couldn’t you forget about last night?! The music blaring through your headphones couldn’t make the image of Tatsuki disappear. It was like the sight of him was etched permanently into your corneas.

Last night only the wind and crickets in the distance told you the world had not froze. Looking at him with eyes the size of saucers, your brain struggled to catch up. Did you hear him right?

When your mind finally thawed, words spewed forward without thought. "Go out with you? Are you insane?!" "It's not such a shock is it?” He faked a wince. “We already--" "Stop!" you interrupted with a hand. "There's no need for a post-mortem." "It happened. Not talking about it won't change that. Give it a try. What do you have to lose?" 'Everything.' But you couldn't confess that to him.

It didn’t help that his offer was so tempting, but you refused to show vulnerability. You weren’t the same person you were just a few weeks ago. You didn’t do one night stands and not with Takao’s little brother of all people! One of you had to be insane, perhaps both of you!

"I just want to forget about that night. It was a mistake,” you said sharply. "Ouch. It wasn't that bad was it?" 'Of course not.' But that was exactly why you had to forget about it. You couldn’t tell if the hurt was real or not. Since when did Tatsuki become so smooth? He was Takao's little brother for goodness' sake! You wanted to slap yourself awake.

Could you still look yourself in the mirror if things got complicated? Oh who were you kidding? Things were already complicated. They were irreversibly tangled from the moment you fell into bed together. And without the cloud of alcohol, the memories of that night were clearer.

The combustible passion when his lips met yours. The way the air had cracked and sizzled like live lightning when he touched you. Not even Takao inspired that all consuming blaze inside you, so how much worse could the fall out be this time around.

"I'm not looking for a relationship," you said flatly. "That's fine,” he refused to be deterred. "Really?" you raised an eyebrow. With a family unit like Takao’s, you would expect the boys to be looking for soulmates not flings. "No, but if I said that, you'd run as fast as your legs could carry you." That was your cue to start walking.

"Hey, hey, it was a joke,” he grabbed your hand, pulling you to a halt. "You're not very funny." "Tough audience,” he shrugged and laughed. Somewhere along the two years, Tatsuki had shed the boy who would blush and stammer. There was no denying the man he had become.

You ran faster, sweat dripping from your brow, as you tried to escape your inner demons. Why did he have to show up now? You only had a few more weeks until Takao’s wedding, and then you could finally put it all behind you. It was like the universe was conspiring against you. The tightness in your chest gripped and twisted your heart. He’d get married, and you’ll move on even if you had to rip out your own heart in the process. Did he ever really love you? If he did, why were you the only one suffering still?

The breath in your chest burned, but you continued on. It didn’t matter that you could barely see through the tears you refused to cry. If your whole body hurt, perhaps you could ignore the pain in your chest. Only when your lungs were about to give up on you, did you come to a halt, hands on your knees. Right on the path, regardless of who could see you, you sank into a crouch.

“Are you alright?!” a voice shouted in panic behind you. Through your turmoil, you could barely register it was male.

“Hey, do you want me to call an ambulance?” This time the voice came closer and the owner’s hand turned you around. Your vision went in and out of focus as you squinted at the person in front of you.

  “Takao?” It was the first name on your lips. “Is there something wrong with your heart?” It was only then that you realized one of your hands had fisted your t-shirt over your heart. “I’m fine.” You unclenched your hand, finally lifting your face only to find that your eyes were blurry with unshed tears. “But you’re crying.” The warmest brown eyes were filled with worry as they gazed at you. You took his proffered hand, letting him pull you to your feet. “It’s nothing.” You pulled your hand from his. It wasn’t Takao.

“You shouldn’t run like that if there’s something wrong with your heart.” Your rubbed the tears away with the back of your hand. “I said I’m fine. What are you doing here? Stalking me?” The harsh words left your lips. What was wrong with you? You were never this rude. 

Tatsuki looks absolutely at ease though. His hair barely damp with perspiration, his t-shirt molded to his shoulder and sculpted chest. You stopped there as you caught yourself staring. You must be exhausted. That would be the only excuse you allowed yourself for being so rude as to ogle him in plain daylight. It didn’t escape his notice though. He raised an eyebrow at you, as the corners of his lips lifted. He was so sure of yourself, you just wanted to slap the grin off his face.

“It’s a public park, but if you must know, I took an educated guess,” he shrugged.  “Huh?” you said like a half-wit, trying not to acknowledge you had been caught staring. “This is the same trail you and Takao used to run.”  “What?” Your mind was busy catching up while your eyes were wide as saucers. “I said-” “I know what you said.” You didn’t even notice. You had simply left the house not even thinking twice about it. Old habits die hard, and you couldn’t seem to escape yours.

You caught the sports drink that arced through the air. The two of you sat on a bench, watching others run past you, not saying a word. The wind felt so good on your heated skin.

“Wanna talk about it?” In a corner of your mind, you noted the familiarity of his speech but said nothing. Why bother? It was undeniable that things were different between you and Tatsuki.

“No.” you shook your head. Silence fell again, and you were thankful he didn’t press. You couldn’t bare it if others knew exactly how much of a mess you were. Without the fragile illusion of strength, you wouldn’t be able to get up in the morning to face the world. The days were ticking down. You had to get it together. Otherwise it would be hopeless after Takao married to someone else.

“I haven’t given up yet.” He said, still looking out into the distance. Neither of you looked at each other, both choosing the trees that hide the busy city. A slice of quiet carved into the morning before millions rushed off to work and you back to reality.

You took another swig. Swallowing, for the first time since you got back to Tokyo, you blanked out the million thoughts in your head. “Yes.” “What?” He whipped around so quickly to face you, he knocked over his drink. Not that he noticed as the drink quickly soaked the ground. You could feel his gaze fixed on you. “I said ‘yes.’

Author’s Note: Sorry for the delay. I know I said I would post monthly, but I haven’t really had the motivation for writing. Many of the writers that here when I started have left tumblr, and others have stopped writing. It’s definitely quieter on my dash than it was before. I think most of my followers are more here for screenshots which makes it doubly easy to procrastinate. But here it is. I finally got my but in gear to finish the last part. Enough of my rambling.

We got rear ended couple of days ago, some bumper damage and chipped paint. According to the repair shop there is no internal or inside damage to it. Nether the less it would cost about $1000-1500 to fix it (bumper would be replaced). I have 1995 Toyota Corolla DX, and it drives great. I really love it, and didn't plan on getting rid of it. Why did my car insurance go up instead of down after i turned 25?

In November I turned 25 years old. I've always been told the two good things about turning 25 is that I can rent a car for cheaper and I will have cheaper auto insurance. I was excited about this. But when I turned 25, my insurance went up. When I turned 18, my insurance was $80 a mo. I have had insurance since then, I have nothing on my record (never had a speeding ticket, nothing). I've always payed bills on time, and since I was 23 I had full coverage. I've had the same car since I was 23 which is a newer model and nothing has changed with my driving info since I was 23. At age 23 and 24 my insurance went up to $130 a month with full coverage, the same car, nothing on my record, etc... But on my 25th birthday, I went in to renew my insurance. Now since I turned 25, my insurance went up to $210 a month. The woman who gave me my quote said she was unsure why my insurance went up instead of down since I had nothing on my record and I am a valuable customer. She was really confused and has never seen auto insurance go up instead of down when someone turns 25 unless they have something on their record. i payed the price but they are investigating it but as of right now, they don't have any answers. I went for the repair estimate to the agent #1, he was ready to write a check for $1500, but I was wondering how much they would pay if they totaled the car, in a couple of days I got a phone call and the agent#2 said that the vehicle is gonna be a total loss and said they would pay $2300 and take the car. I decided to just take the $1500. Agents #1 and #2 directed me to an agent #3, I explained the whole situation to him and he said he would issue $1800 if I want to keep the car BUT I would have to get a salvage title for the vehicle first due to the state law. The state law requires a person to get a salvage title if the repair cost is 75% or more of the vehicle total value. I do not want to get a salvage title for the vehicle and I told him that the original estimate given by the agent #1 was $1500, not $1800 which is less than 75%, to which he responded I believe we still had some items open when you got that estimate . he will check it and call me back. 1. Allstate was supposed to compensate me for X amount of damage done to my car by the driver who had insurance upto 5 grand. Summary: Mikleo dreams of travelling the world, having exciting adventures like his uncle. Unfortunately, he lives a pretty boring life in the tiny mountain village of Camlann. If he's not working at his family's temple, he's having to deal with his mother's constant attempts to match-make him to every eligible girl in town.

“We need to talk,” Himeko said gravely.

Mikleo gave a pained smile over the rim of his teacup, and lightly set it back down on its saucer.

“Of course,” he said. “What’s on your mind?”

Himeko took a deep breath, and launched into a screed that Mikleo had heard few dozen times before – in different voices, and with different finer details, but with the same overarching message.

Mikleo was twenty-four years old, and had earned something of a reputation in town and the surrounding villages. This reputation was not entirely undeserved, when looking at the hard facts: he’d dated and broken the hearts of roughly sixty-three percent of the eligible female population in a fifty-mile radius. However, Mikleo wasn’t a heartbreaker by choice. His mother was dead set on chaining him to the village by any means necessary, and “You Need to Settle Down and Start a Family” was her current weapon of choice; when “You Need to Honor Our Family’s Duty and Tend to the Temple” had failed to inspire piety. The thing was, Mikleo also had no interest in settling down and absolutely no interest in children, so Muse had elected to force him on dates with every unmarried woman that she passingly caught the name of. She was a one-woman matchmaking service, and it was quite impressive in its own way. Though Mikleo did wonder how she managed to keep up with the temple’s day-to-day needs while taking on this little side gig of hers.

(Idly, as Himeko went on and on, Mikleo wondered how it would go if he brought up that point during his and his mother’s next fight. It would probably go very badly.)

Although Muse’s zeal for matchmaking was abundant, the quality of the matches...left something to be desired. Not a single one of these little relationships had lasted longer than a few weeks, and most of them crashed and burned quite spectacularly. (Usually the “burning” wasn’t literal; one memorable breakup notwithstanding.) Mikleo knew that he wasn’t a good fit for these girls – they wanted a quiet little life in the village and somewhere between two and a dozen children, and he wanted nothing more than to leave this town and travel the world with his uncle. Their life goals were simply incompatible, and even when it came to the finer details of shared hobbies and interests, kindred passions...well, there simply weren’t any. Mikleo could only think of one other person other than his uncle who shared his passion for history, and he—

“—honestly, from the rumors going around about you, I thought you’d be more – you know, more pushy, more of a scoundrel! Ravishing me against walls and over tables! But you’re more affectionate with that raggedy dog of yours than you are with me!” Himeko declared.

Himeko was clearly waiting for Mikleo to deny it, to reaffirm his devotion to her. The table fell into an eerie silence. Mikleo stared evenly at her, his expression very carefully blank.

“...’raggedy’?” Mikleo repeated.

Himeko shifted uncomfortably under Mikleo’s piercing gaze, and hemmed and hawed a moment before collecting herself. “Y-yes, well, I don’t know how else you want me to describe it. That bizarre fur that it’s always shedding on everything, and smelling like it’s just rolled in something foul, and that brainless expression it always has on its face--”

“I’m sorry,” Mikleo interrupted. “This isn’t going to work out.”

Mikleo signaled for the check, and the waitress brought it over wordlessly – she’d been witness to enough of these breakups that she knew to prepare herself the moment Mikleo walked in the door. Himeko sputtered, turned cherry red, and snatched up her purse before bounding to her feet. She stood in front of Mikleo, glaring down at him where he sat. He maintained eye contact, and raised an eyebrow at her.

“I hope you and that mutt keep each other company, and have a long life together,” she snapped before storming out of the cafe.

Mikleo wondered if that was supposed to be an insult. He bent down to dig in his pack for his wallet. The waitress took his money, and began to clear up the table as Mikleo finished his tea.

“She keeps looking back over her shoulder,” said the waitress. (She was named Lily, and had once been subjected to Muse’s matchmaking quest as well. Her breakup with Mikleo was years in the past now, however, and her doting husband was the village’s baker.) “I think she’s expecting you to chase after her.”

“Is she now?” Mikleo asked flatly. He swirled the tea in his cup before he took a sip.

Lily chuckled and shook her head. “Well, at least this one didn’t slap you. I had a cold washcloth all ready for you just in case.”

“You’re too kind.” Mikleo rose to his feet, and bowed at his waist. “Sorry about the commotion. As usual.”

“Are you kidding? We get so many customers who come in to watch the show. I think there’s a betting pool.”

Mikleo was happy to hear that he was supporting the local economy, and less happy to hear that he was the town’s designated soap opera star. His long brown hair, tied back in a low ponytail, hid how his ears burned red. He bade Lily farewell, and ducked out the cafe’s side door. He had a busy day ahead of him, and couldn’t let the embarrassment of yet another very public breakup get to his head. He had appointments at two houses, today, and had to run back to the temple to dress beforehand, and listen to his mother tut about how he just wasn’t trying to make it work with all the perfectly lovely girls she’d picked out for him—

Mikleo’s thoughts were interrupted by the press of a cold wet nose against his hand. Mikleo jumped, then sighed, and tried his best not to smile. Sorey’s sparkling green eyes gazed up at him; his expression bright and curious. (“Brainless”. Honestly, one would have to be pretty empty-headed themselves to even – no, no, there was no point in going down that path. Mikleo was a single man once more, and moreover, brooding would do him no good during his upcoming house-calls.) Mikleo reached down to ruffle Sorey’s coat, and rub at his soft ears. Sorey whined happily, his tail picking up speed and his tongue poking out of his muzzle as he leaned his head in to relish Mikleo’s touch. Mikleo felt his heart ache with fondness. Honestly, what was he to do with him.

“Come on,” Mikleo said. “We need to head back to the temple before I’m late for my house visits.”

Sorey trotted in step beside Mikleo, matching his pace as he always did. Mikleo knew that Sorey had all the speed and grace of the lightning that pierced the sky, and that poking along this sleepy village street was surely beneath his dignity as a god – and yet Sorey still walked beside him, ever since that fateful day in front of the temple.

A foul smell reached Mikleo’s nose, jolting him from his reverie. He crinkled his nose, and eyed Sorey as they walked.

“...were you rolling in something?” Mikleo asked sternly.

Sorey flinched, and he looked up at Mikleo with soulful, apologetic eyes. His soft fluffy ears lowered, making him a portrait of sincere, smelly contrition. Mikleo had a special weakness for Sorey’s puppy-eye look, and did not appreciate having said weakness targeted. He averted his eyes and managed to keep walking, keep focusing on the important things – getting back to the temple, getting to his appointments, and the fact that Sorey smelled like musky garlic that’d been baking in the sun too long.

“Sorry,” Sorey said. They were at the temple’s steps, and no one was around to hear him speak. “I’m...guessing your date didn’t go too well?”

“Nope,” Mikleo replied. He was already over it, not that there was really anything to get over. Himeko was surely right for someone, but Mikleo had little patience for the dramatic princess act. “And don’t try to change the subject. What were you--”

“Mikleo!”

Mikleo looked up to see his mother, resplendent in her priestess robes, approaching him. Her smile was bright and hopeful, and Mikleo felt a twinge of annoyance at the sight of it. (And no little guilt at that fact.)

“You’re back! How did it go with Himeko today?”

“Horribly,” Mikleo stated. “We didn’t work out. I’m sure she’ll be cursing my name all over town for the next few months.”

Muse sighed heavily, but didn’t really seem to be surprised by the statement. “Mikleo. You really need to try a bit harder. These girls are all so lovely, and you don’t let them get to know you at all...”

Muse sniffed the air, made a face, and looked down to where Sorey had sat himself at her feet. Sorey beamed his sweet doggy smile up at her, and wagged his tail; lifting one hopeful paw to ask for pets.

“--Sorey, you--” Muse coughed at the foul smell and covered her nose with her long sleeves, but leaned down to delicately pat Sorey’s head in spite of the olfactory assault. “Mikleo, please...before you go, would you...”

“I’ll take care of him,” Mikleo assured her. “Don’t worry. I’m off to get ready for my appointments.”

Thankfully, being as Sorey was a holy spirit of heaven-on-high, it wasn’t blasphemous for Mikleo to firmly instruct him to go wash off in the ceremonial waterfall on the temple grounds while Mikleo took a bath inside. Mikleo would have simply had him bathe indoors with him if Sorey wasn’t quite so smelly, and if Mikleo didn’t have business to attend to after. Mikleo walked out of the baths and back to his room, to find that Sorey had returned in his absence.

“All clean!” Sorey announced, smiling bright. “Promise. I even washed behind my ears. In both forms!”

Sorey had transformed into his human form, and was seated on Mikleo’s bed; casual, cross-legged, and half-naked. A towel was draped around his strong, broad shoulders, and his dripping-wet hair seemed to sparkle in the noonday light filtering through Mikleo’s windows. Water wandered in trails down Sorey’s bare chest and back and arms, outlining his muscles and making his tan skin glow. The drips meandered down Sorey’s body so enviously casually, and settled dark and damp at the hem of his trousers. Mikleo had lived his whole life in the presence of divinity, in the sight of sculptures and etchings of perfect, heavenly forms. Mikleo had lived almost his whole life by Sorey’s side. This practice hardly prepared him to stand upright at the sight of Sorey in this state, but he managed.

“...you’re dripping on my bed,” Mikleo said quietly.

Sorey blinked at him, then down at the bed, then scratched at his cheek, embarrassed. “...sorry. But I got myself a towel!”

Yes, that tiny towel draped around those obscene shoulders of yours is doing so much for us right now, Mikleo thought to himself bitterly. He shook his head and averted his gaze (with no small effort), and went to his closet to dress.

“Just two houses today, if you want to tag along,” Mikleo said. His bath-robe fell to the floor around his feet. The cool air made goosebumps prickle along Mikleo’s bare skin. “I’m sure you’ve had a busy day already.”

A busy day of napping, chasing butterflies, and hitting up the village butcher for scraps. Mikleo turned with a smile on his face as he tied his robes into place, to see Sorey covering his eyes with both hands. Mikleo raised an eyebrow.

“Sorey. You’ve seen me dress before.”

Sorey peeped between his fingers.

“…yeah, but…”

Sorey trailed off, letting the rest of that statement hang between them. Mikleo sat down next to him on the bed, and settled a brush and hair tie in Sorey’s lap.

“Here. Help me put it up today, won’t you?”

Sorey’s face lit up as if Mikleo had offered him a fine spread of gourmet delicacies, and Mikleo dutifully turned to allow him to work. Mikleo let very few people touch his hair – none of the girls he’d dated had ever gotten the privilege – and even Sorey was granted permission only on special occasions. Mikleo was feeling sentimental, today, perhaps – or maybe he just was still stewing over that “raggedy” comment from earlier. Sorey brushed his hair gently, reverently; carding his fingers through the strands to coax it up. Mikleo let his eyes slide shut at the feeling. Honestly, “raggedy”. Sorey’s coat as a dog was soft as silk and glittered in the sun, and his hair as a human was pulled into a romantically-tousled high ponytail. He looked a bit rumpled, sometimes – when they came home from a hike through the forest, and Sorey managed to get more branches and leaves stuck in his hair than any of the actual bushes or trees – but his heavenly presence always shone through loud and clear. Mikleo didn’t have the time or patience for anyone who couldn’t see something so obvious.

“All done!” Sorey sounded proud.

Mikleo looked himself over in the mirror. Honestly, not a bad job at all.

“It’ll do for now,” Mikleo said. “Come on, we’ll be late.”

 The temple was called upon to bless and cleanse households and properties on a regular basis. Frequent cleansings prevented the buildup of malevolence, and decreased the strain on the region’s god, Maotelus. Malevolence built up more quickly in more populated areas, or in locales where bad energy was frequently generated – thus, a quiet village farm could get away with a cleansing only once or twice a year, while the village square called for weekly blessings. Family homes usually called upon the temple’s services every few months, and as the son of the temple’s head priestess, Mikleo often found himself making these house calls personally. The lower-ranked priests and priestesses were tasked with the repetitive and less personal cleanings of public areas, and the older, higher-ranked priests and priestesses served Maotelus directly. Mikleo didn’t envy the work of either faction, but visiting homes directly wasn’t a cakewalk either. Mikleo had to smile and make small talk and listen to gossip, and deal with the judgmental stares when he visited an ex-girlfriend’s family home. Worse, some of these places had barking dogs. All of these factors were equally unpleasant.

Luckily, neither of the homes today were overly-complicated appointments. Both had asked for a simple, straightforward blessing – armed with staff and holy sutras, Mikleo was able to sweep away the malevolence in the air and gathering in the corners of the foundation. Some homes were hotbeds of drama and sorrow, and required top-to-bottom cleanings with holy water – Mikleo usually was able to bring a few temple attendants as assistants to these difficult appointments. A certain amount of malevolence was a part of human existence, but if Mikleo suspected foul play, he reported his findings to his mother at the temple; Muse then saw to it that the source of the matter was investigated. A household continually generating bad energy was a strain on Maotelus, and a strain on the village’s harmony. It was Mikleo’s duty to determine what begged a closer look.

The sun was beginning to set, and Mikleo and Sorey were on their way home; Mikleo’s arms filled with offerings made by the household in thanks for the temple’s service. Homes presented many things as offerings, and today, Mikleo had lucked out and been presented with two boxes of beautifully-made sweets from the town’s bakery. The sweet bean paste filling each perfectly-round miniature cake was rich and smooth; the perfect complement to the subtle resistance the mochi shell gave to the bite of Mikleo’s teeth. Mikleo savored two treats from the box on the walk back, and Sorey – well, “savoring” wasn’t the term. It implied a certain level of care and slowness of consumption that Sorey absolutely did not do. However, he clearly enjoyed it; the drool was evidence enough.

They passed by Zaveid’s bar on the way back; the Spring Breeze. Mikleo eyed it, considering. He wanted very badly to get home and crawl into bed, but these sweets would be perfect with a drink or two…Mikleo felt Sorey tugging on the hem on his robe with his teeth, and looked down, frowning.

“Sorey. I can have a drink if I want to,” Mikleo said sternly.

Sorey made a whiny little howl, and tangled himself in Mikleo’s legs stubbornly. He couldn’t speak aloud to him – there were too many people around outside the bar – but he made enough of a nuisance of himself for Mikleo to give up and keep walking to the temple. Once they were out of earshot of the crowds, Mikleo requested an explanation.

Sorey’s ears went low, and those damn eyes of his stared up at him. Mikleo’s face flushed, and he managed to look away before the effect floored him.

“You can’t go in there looking…like that,” Sorey said. “Who knows what someone who’s had a few too many drinks will try to do!”

Mikleo didn’t really understand what Sorey was implying – he wasn’t planning on getting sloppy drunk while in temple dress, if he was concerned about Mikleo besmirching the temple’s good image. He also was fully capable of defending himself against some drunk who wanted to fight; not that Zaveid would let any of that go on in his bar. Still, the urge for a drink had passed, and they were back at the temple once more.

“I want to share some of these with Maotelus,” Sorey said, and stood in front of Mikleo until Mikleo slotted one of the boxes into Sorey’s waiting jaws for him to carry.

“Don’t sample too many on your way there,” Mikleo said, only half-joking. “I’ll go change and then come up to offer my respects.”

Maotelus was the region’s chief god, and the temple had the peerless honor of being his seat in the earthly realm. Mikleo did not see him often – after all, it was the job of the more senior temple staff to attend to him – but their past interactions had been wholly pleasant. Maotelus was warm, friendly, and as down-to-earth as a god could really be. He often asked about whatever Mikleo was currently reading or studying, and was just as excited to hear about what Mikleo’s uncle Michael was getting up to as Mikleo and Sorey were. He could have passed for another one of Mikleo’s uncles, if not for the fact that he took the form of a white dragon, about the size of a draft horse. His radiance and imposing figure was only undercut a bit by his youthful-sounding voice. Mikleo hadn’t ever seen him in a more human state – perhaps that kind of thing was improper for a god of his stature.

The rest of the temple was silent, devoid of any attendants rushing about – most had gone home for the day. True to his word, Mikleo climbed up to the highest part of the temple grounds, kowtowed at the gates, and went in to pay his respects.

“Mikleo! Good to see you.”

The greeting from Maotelus seemed a bit abrupt, a bit forced – as if Mikleo had walked in on a conversation that needed to remain a secret. Mikleo couldn’t pretend not to be curious (curiosity was in his nature, after all), but was a respectful man at heart – he knew better than to pry into godly business. Or…whatever he and Sorey were getting up to in their little clubhouse up here. Mikleo eyed the empty sweets boxes, and spied a teetering pile of more empty boxes stashed in a corner.

“Lord Maotelus,” Mikleo said, bowing low and placing his forehead upon the ground. “It’s an honor, as always.”

“Please, get up. Tell me what you’ve been up to lately.”

Mikleo shifted into a more comfortable position, and fixed the fall of his hair over his shoulder. “What can I say, really? Same as always. Uncle Michael should hopefully be visiting home soon; he’d have much more interesting things to tell you.”

“Will he?” Maotelus asked. He sounded almost relieved. “Good, that’s good.”

Maotelus seemed… he was still magnificent, of course, but he seemed smaller than Mikleo last remembered him. It was maybe just a trick of the waning light, or a fault in Mikleo’s memory. But the exhaustion written all over Maotelus’ face was no trick, to be certain. Mikleo felt a twinge of guilt. It was his duty to keep the town cleansed of malevolence, to decrease Maotelus’ strain on keeping the realm prosperous. Was he slacking on his appointments? Were his heartbreaking escapades causing a storm of negative energy to arise from the town’s distraught women? Mikleo fretted. He would have to scout the town tomorrow, to see if he could detect any increase in negativity.

“…I see that you enjoyed the offerings,” Mikleo observed.

“We did,” Maotelus agreed. “I…don’t suppose you could rustle us up some more next time you’re out?”

Sorey’s puppy eyes were hard enough to handle on their own, and paired with Maotelus’ pleading, hopeful look…well, Mikleo didn’t stand a chance.

“Of course,” Mikleo promised. “But don’t let Sorey steal all of them. He’s been getting a bit of a belly recently.”

“Hey!” Sorey said, offended. He scowled down at his stomach and poked it with a finger. “I have not.”

“I’ll try my best,” Maotelus said with a chuckle. “Now, why don’t you two head off to bed? It’s getting late.”

“Sure,” Sorey said. He leaned over to stroke Maotelus’ muzzle with his hand. “Night, Mao.”

“Good night, Lord Maotelus.”

They slipped out the grand door that led to Maotelus’ chambers and into the cool night air. Sorey had transformed back into his dog form, and trotted alongside Mikleo as they walked back to the temple’s living chambers.

“You and Maotelus seem to be close, lately,” Mikleo observed. “What have the two of you been getting into together? Hopefully nothing that the attendants will have to clean up after.”

“No, no, nothing like that,” Sorey assured before trotting ahead of Mikleo. “You promised to get us more sweets, though? Really promised?”

So, it was a secret, then. Mikleo tried not to feel hurt – since when did he and Sorey have any secrets between them? – and look at it logically. There were simply some things beyond mortal comprehension; godly business that humans had no business prying into. He could leave it at that, and try to quash the curiosity that still nagged at him.

Still, maybe he could buy himself a seat in Sorey and Maotelus’ clubhouse with some treats.

“Yes, yes, I really will. I’ll have the priests bring them up starting tomorrow.”

Sorey cast a beaming doggie smile over his shoulder, his tongue lolling out of his mouth joyously. Mikleo couldn’t help but smile back, and jogged to catch up with Sorey. The day was done, and tomorrow was yet to come – it was time to rest, and dream of the wide world outside the village gates.

And maybe, if luck was on his side, Muse would give him a few days’ break before setting up another date.
