The Planet Hotel, Guangzhou, China
Located on a busy street in Guangzhou’s LIwan district, surrounded by foreign trade markets (mostly textiles) is a unique lodging choice that will whip you away from “Planet China” and into its own universe. The Planet Hotel is an ambitious attempt to bring an element of surprise, western concepts of hospitality and one-of-kind décor to an otherwise bland and uninspiring hotel experience in this part of the city.
I visited this hotel during an admittedly sleepy time of the year, the heat of the Chinese New Year, so my experience was different in that the hotel occupancy was low and the surrounding markets and businesses were closed for the week. Still, it did not distract from my experience.
Building:
Location: The location is in a part of the city that is heavy with foreign trade and not necessarily near any tourist attractions. A short walk south into the vibrant Liwan district or a few blocks to the metro will get you where you need to go. Unless you’re in the area for business, you’ll be out of your way to stay here.
Facilities: The building is not a new construction and consists of a mid-rise, 2 wing design. The hotel does not offer any kind of recreational facilities such as a gym, spa, or swimming pool. But there was a coffee shop/wine bar adjacent to the main lobby that (because of the holiday week I stayed) was empty and not in use. The well-stocked gift and snack shop was a welcome site when waiting for the elevator. I only got to experience the restaurant on the top floor for the morning breakfast.
Amenities: Everything is branded in this hotel. EVERYTHING! You can’t look at the towels, toilet paper holder, or even the waste basket without it reminding you that you’re staying at “The Planet Hotel”. The room and bathroom amenities were abundant for this caliber hotel.
Décor: This is the real star of the show. Some people might be put off by the pseudo-“cheesy” elements throughout but the property knows what it is and ultimately made for a fun atmosphere. You never knew what splash of bright color or alien statue would await behind each corner. During my visit, the carpets in the rooms and in the hallways were so thick that you actually felt like you were bouncing, or floating in a low gravity space station. The white walls and fixtures felt like they’re right out of the Apple design studios and the distant hum of the Air Conditioners added to the utter worldly environment.
Service
Staff: The front desk staff were excellent and welcoming when I first entered. It was a little humid outside and I was offered some sweet tea and a hot towel at check-in. The process was efficient and the front desk agents were well trained to accommodate a foreign guest. In the restaurant, which is rather small for a hotel this size, the staff and especially the manager on duty were very diligent in escorting guests in and out and providing service and space to enjoy the breakfast. They in particular, should be commended for executing this delicate dance with guests and available dining space each morning.
Food: The abundant buffet style breakfast food catered to both Chinese and western tastes and the egg bar gave my requests quickly and to my liking.
Cleanliness: The rooms and hallways did not smell like cigarette smoke, a comment of note when dealing with Chinese hotels as it’s quite rare. In fact, there was a pleasant smell throughout the hotel, much like a “new carpet” smell. The bathrooms, rooms, and common areas were all free of clutter and dust; a noticeably attentive housekeeping staff taking care of everything.
Experience
Comfort: The beds were extremely comfortable. The soft touch bed sidings and super soft mattress made getting out of bed in the morning a fight with my will power. However, the interesting mid-century inspired space chair in the room looked cool, but was a chore to hang out in for more than a few minutes. The standard rooms are small and could be considered crowded for more than 2 people.
Uniqueness: This is definitely a unique experience hotel for this market. Rooms facing the road will offer the only real view of the outside world. The room I was in had a disappointing view of the boarded-up windows of the office building next door. The attempt at what it’s trying to do is worthy, but things like the space capsule showers with changing lights and loud music have a less than stellar execution. The crazy alien characters and ultra-modern artwork of the lobby more than make up for those shortcomings. You won’t find another hotel stay like this in Guangzhou.
Value: Definitely a good value for the money considering the lack of other inspiring competition, the bountiful breakfast buffet, and the unique concept. The prices are pretty much in line as the other options in this category, and although lacking some facilities that have become standard throughout the industry, the uncommon décor and amenities more than make up for it.

A year after my visit, I’m still telling my friends about this place and that is the mark of a good hotel. It doesn’t have to be the most opulent or most comfortable to be a success. For true hotel fanatics like myself, this beats the typical hotel “box with a bed” experience at a price that doesn’t over promise what is actually being delivered. I applaud The Planet Hotel for stepping into the Guangzhou Hotel market with such a bold attempt. The company has ambitions to expand their brand and I’m looking forward to future offerings from this lodging group.

Park Hyatt Guangzhou: A Masterpiece of Modern Elegance in the City Skyline
From the moment you step into the Park Hyatt Guangzhou, you're greeted with a sense of understated elegance and sophisticated design that sets this luxury hotel apart from its many competitors in the heart of Zhujiang New Town. Known as one of the top-tier offerings from the Hyatt brand, the Park Hyatt Guangzhou blends traditional Chinese elements with modern luxury, offering guests a serene yet chic retreat high above the bustling streets of Guangzhou.
youtube
Location: The Heart of Zhujiang New Town
Situated in the premier business district of Zhujiang New Town, the Park Hyatt Guangzhou is ideally located for business and leisure travelers alike. Just steps away from key landmarks like the Canton Tower, the Guangzhou Opera House, and the International Financial Center, the hotel offers stunning views of the city’s skyline. With the U.S. Consulate right across the street, the hotel’s location is as practical as it is scenic.
The surrounding area is perfect for walking, with easy access to high-end shopping, dining, and cultural attractions. Whether you're in town for business or simply to explore Guangzhou's urban charm, Park Hyatt provides an ideal base. Plus, the nearby metro stations make it easy to navigate the rest of the city.
Room Experience: Blending Chinese Tradition with Modern Design
The moment you enter the room, you're met with a perfect fusion of Chinese aesthetic touches and contemporary luxury. From the traditional Chinese latticework to modern amenities like electric toilets and an in-mirror TV, the attention to detail in each room is astounding.
I was impressed by the spacious layout, especially for a hotel located in the heart of a busy metropolis. My room was on the 62nd floor, offering breathtaking views of the city. The room design is wide rather than deep, creating a feeling of openness, while the use of dark wood paneling and subtle lighting adds a sense of warmth and coziness. There’s a balance between modernity and tradition here, with rough wood paneling, a hint of Chinese lantern-inspired lighting, and high-end marble finishes in the bathroom.
One detail that stood out was the cleanliness of the room—every aspect, from the hidden wiring behind the television to the spotless hardwood floors, reflects the meticulous care taken by the staff. The closet was another welcome feature, providing ample space for clothes, an ironing board, and even a privacy slider if you have guests in your room.
Facilities: First-Class Offerings Across the Board
The Park Hyatt Guangzhou excels in its range of high-quality facilities. The fitness center, located on the 65th floor, offers a complete selection of Life Fitness equipment, including treadmills with plexiglass partitions for extra privacy. The center may not be the largest, but it’s perfectly designed to provide everything you need for a solid workout, with the added bonus of sweeping city views.
A standout feature is the infinity pool on the 63rd floor, where you can take a dip while overlooking the city. This area, like the fitness center, is well thought-out, offering a serene atmosphere high above the hustle and bustle of Guangzhou. The juxtaposition of dark, moody corridors with bright, open spa areas creates a striking contrast that heightens the overall experience.
For those looking to unwind, the hotel also offers a luxurious spa. From the moment you step into the spa's bright and airy entrance, you’re transported to a tranquil sanctuary—perfect for relaxing after a long day of meetings or sightseeing.
Dining: Exquisite Cuisine with a View
Dining at the Park Hyatt Guangzhou is an experience in itself. Offering stunning panoramic views of Guangzhou, the restaurant's mix of buffet and à la carte options allows guests to savor a wide variety of cuisines. The breakfast service is exceptional, offering both Western and Asian dishes that are prepared to perfection.
The service is what you would expect from a five-star hotel—impeccable. The attention to detail and the warm hospitality of the staff make each meal a pleasure, whether you're enjoying a casual breakfast or a more formal dinner. And if you're in the mood for something different, there are plenty of excellent restaurants just a short walk from the hotel, including some great international options.
Décor and Ambiance: Modern Elegance Meets Traditional Chinese Design
The bird’s nest-inspired wood element in the main lobby is a beautiful example of the hotel’s commitment to integrating local art and culture into its spaces. This unique design feature, along with natural stone formations and real candlelight in the lounge areas, gives the hotel a warm and inviting feel.
The rooms are filled with small but meaningful design choices that elevate the overall experience. From the wood and marble accents in the bathroom to the artfully placed mirrors that add depth and light to the room, everything is carefully curated to create an environment that is both luxurious and homely.
Service: Unparalleled Hospitality
The staff at Park Hyatt Guangzhou ensures that every need is taken care of with professionalism and genuine warmth. Hyatt has long been recognized as one of the best hospitality companies in the world, and this property is no exception. The staff goes above and beyond to ensure a comfortable and memorable stay, whether it's providing a warm welcome with fresh fruit and a personalized note or offering expert recommendations for exploring the city.
Final Thoughts: A Unique High-Rise Sanctuary in Guangzhou
While tower hotels often run the risk of feeling cookie-cutter, the Park Hyatt Guangzhou sets itself apart with its unique blend of design, comfort, and service. Whether you’re here for business or leisure, this hotel offers an experience that is truly one-of-a-kind.
With top-tier facilities, world-class dining, and a prime location in Zhujiang New Town, the Park Hyatt Guangzhou is a sanctuary in the sky. It delivers the level of service and attention to detail that you’d expect from a Park Hyatt, but with a distinct sense of place that makes it stand out even in a city filled with luxury hotels.

Explore Shangri-la Hotel's Oasis In Guangzhou China
The Shangri-La Hotel in Guangzhou stands as a benchmark of luxury in the city's hospitality scene, particularly due to its strategic location next to the Canton Fair’s convention center. The property is an excellent choice for business travelers, especially those attending major exhibitions like the Canton Fair or the Guangzhou Auto Show. Despite being an older hotel, the Shangri-La exudes an energy typical of five-star hotels, combining elegance, tradition, and modern amenities.
youtube
Location: Convenient for Business Travelers
Shangri-La Guangzhou boasts a prime location right next to the Canton Fair's convention center, making it incredibly convenient for business visitors. Along with other top-tier hotels like The Westin and The Langham, it's among the best choices for those attending the fair or other conferences. Moreover, it’s just a short drive from Guangzhou’s central business district, Zhujiang New Town, offering proximity to cultural landmarks like the Canton Tower and the Opera House.
While it's primarily aimed at business travelers, the hotel’s serene riverside location offers an oasis amidst the bustling city. You’re only a few blocks away from Zhujiang New Town, but the hotel's gardens and open spaces give it a much more relaxed feel compared to the high-rise atmosphere of downtown.
Room Experience: Classic Elegance with a Touch of Age
Although the rooms show some signs of age, they maintain the classic elegance expected of the Shangri-La brand. You’ll notice some wear and tear in the décor, especially in the carpets and furnishings, but the rooms are kept impeccably clean. The layout is traditional, with dark wood finishes, plenty of counter space, and a workspace equipped with HDMI inputs, ideal for business needs.
The bed in my room was a real king-sized bed—not two twin beds pushed together, which is a welcome feature—and the linens were soft and luxurious. One downside is that the rooms could use some modern updates, particularly the bathrooms, which are on the smaller side compared to newer luxury properties in Guangzhou. The single-sink setup and lack of an electric toilet, for example, make the space feel a bit outdated. But, it’s hard to overlook the hotel’s attention to cleanliness and the inclusion of essential amenities like ironing boards, comfy robes, and high-quality disposable toiletries.
Facilities: Comprehensive Yet Elegant
This property shines when it comes to its facilities, particularly for those looking to host or attend large-scale events. With multiple conference rooms, a sprawling ballroom, and various event spaces, it’s perfect for weddings, corporate events, and exhibitions. In fact, the well-manicured garden area, complete with a putting green, feels like a hidden sanctuary. There’s even an option to set up tents along the river, offering a unique outdoor experience right in the heart of the city.
The outdoor pool is closed during the winter months, but the indoor pool is a great alternative for those who want to keep up with their fitness routines. Speaking of fitness, the Shangri-La Guangzhou has a top-notch gym and spa area that are popular with both guests and locals alike. The spa, in particular, comes highly recommended and offers a range of treatments that make it the ideal place to unwind after a long day.
Dining: Expensive but High-Quality
Like many luxury hotels, the Shangri-La’s dining options are quite pricey. The dinner buffet costs around 468 RMB per person, while breakfast is about 131 RMB. Despite the steep prices, the selection is impressive, offering a mix of Western and Chinese options, all of which are well-prepared and served with excellent customer service. However, if you're looking to save, there are nearby cafes and restaurants that offer more affordable dining options.
One issue I encountered was the cost of basic items like water. A bottle of water at the lobby lounge was 35 RMB, which felt like a bit of a cash grab, but the hotel staff quickly addressed the issue after I raised it. The professionalism and willingness to correct mistakes is a hallmark of Shangri-La's five-star service.
Service: Top-Notch and Attentive
The staff at Shangri-La Guangzhou is exceptional. From the front desk to the event coordinators, everyone makes you feel like a valued guest. I was particularly impressed with how the lobby ambassadors handled guest inquiries—rather than just pointing in the direction, they personally escorted me to my destination. Small gestures like these set the Shangri-La apart from many of its competitors.
The turn-down service was another highlight. After returning to my room one evening, I was greeted with a beautifully arranged fruit plate and complimentary beers. These thoughtful touches elevate the overall experience and show the hotel's commitment to guest satisfaction.
Final Thoughts: A Classic Luxury Stay with Room for Improvement
While some aspects of the Shangri-La Guangzhou could use a modern update, it’s still a great option for business travelers and those attending events at the nearby convention center. The hotel’s service is impeccable, the facilities are extensive, and the location is ideal for both business and leisure. If you're willing to overlook some dated elements, you’ll find that the Shangri-La offers an excellent blend of luxury, convenience, and hospitality at a slightly more affordable rate than some of the newer five-star properties in Guangzhou.

W Hotel Guangzhou: Bold Design Meets Playful Luxury
The W Hotel Guangzhou makes an unforgettable impression from the moment you walk in. A stylish and bold presence in the Tianhe district, this property is a standout in the world of boutique-inspired hotels. W Hotels, which started in the late 1990s as a trendsetting experiment in New York, have become synonymous with modern, playful design, and the Guangzhou location lives up to that reputation. It’s not your typical five-star hotel—it’s fun, edgy, and caters to a younger, more hip crowd who appreciates both luxury and creativity.
youtube
The location of the W Hotel is as energetic as its design, nestled in Tianhe, one of Guangzhou’s busiest and most modern districts. The area is perfect for business travelers or those looking to experience the city’s nightlife, with plenty of shopping, dining, and entertainment options right at your doorstep. The hotel’s proximity to key landmarks makes it a solid base for exploring Guangzhou, whether you’re in town for work or leisure.
Entering the hotel is an experience in itself. The “Living Room” concept replaces a traditional lobby with a stylish lounge area, where guests can work, socialize, or grab a drink in a setting that feels more like a trendy bar than a check-in desk. The atmosphere is lively, and you’re greeted with a sleek, dark interior that’s accented by colorful, eye-catching design elements.
Room Experience: A Mix of Sexy Design and Comfort
The rooms at W Hotel Guangzhou are an extension of the hotel’s daring personality. My room was filled with cool, edgy touches, from quirky lighting fixtures to modern art and sleek furniture. However, while the design is certainly eye-catching, attention to detail isn’t always perfect. For instance, some parts of the room, like handles and light switches, showed signs of wear and tear, and there were a few cleanliness issues that could have been better addressed.
Despite those minor flaws, the room itself was comfortable and well-equipped. The bed, though smaller than expected, was soft and inviting, and the room’s layout was spacious enough to move around freely. One detail I appreciated was the walk-in closet, which provided plenty of space to store clothes and bags. It even had its own door for added privacy, which was a thoughtful touch.
The bathroom was one of the standout features of the room, with a tub and shower combo that made for a luxurious experience. There was also an electric toilet—a must for any top-tier hotel these days—and dual sinks, which added a touch of convenience. However, the room could have used a bit more light, even with the adjustable "bright" and "comfort" lighting options.
Facilities: Designed for Style and Relaxation
The W Hotel Guangzhou boasts several facilities designed to impress. The fitness center is equipped with modern equipment, perfect for a solid workout. But the real highlight is the swimming pool, which offers a breathtaking view from high above the city. The pool area is beautifully designed, though I was puzzled by some of the quirky design choices, like a painted cow near the pool, which seemed a little out of place.
That said, the view of the city from the pool deck is stunning, and there’s a certain charm to swimming while overlooking Guangzhou’s skyline. Whether you're taking a dip during the day or lounging poolside at night, the atmosphere is unbeatable.
Dining: A Pricey but Delicious Experience
Room service at the W is not cheap, but the quality is excellent. I ordered a club sandwich with fries and a small salad, and while the price was steep (around $20), the presentation and taste were top-notch. Dining at the hotel offers a blend of casual fun and gourmet experiences, and the playful approach extends to everything from the menu design to the food itself.
For those looking to explore beyond room service, the hotel’s dining options include restaurants and bars that offer a trendy, social vibe, perfect for grabbing a cocktail or a light meal. And the “Living Room” bar downstairs is a great spot to mingle or relax with a drink, adding to the hotel’s lively social scene.
Décor and Ambiance: Playful, Edgy, and a Bit Quirky
True to W Hotels’ brand, the décor in the Guangzhou property is modern and playful, with edgy design elements everywhere you look. From the bold lighting fixtures to the dark, moody color scheme, the hotel feels like a sleek, urban nightclub. The brand’s signature humor is also present, with cheeky signs and quirky design touches sprinkled throughout the property.
However, some elements of the design felt a little too experimental for my taste. For example, certain furniture pieces, like handles and cabinets, seemed more decorative than functional, and it wasn’t always clear what was meant to be a door or a drawer. But overall, the hotel’s design does what it sets out to do: create a space that feels fresh, modern, and youthful.
Service: Friendly, but Attention to Detail is Lacking
The staff at the W Hotel Guangzhou were friendly and accommodating, making check-in a breeze and handling requests with a smile. However, the lack of attention to detail in certain areas—like mismatched clock times and a few cleanliness issues—was noticeable. It’s a hotel that strives for coolness but could benefit from refining some of the smaller aspects to elevate the guest experience even further.
Final Thoughts: A Fun, Hip Escape in Guangzhou
The W Hotel Guangzhou isn’t your typical five-star hotel—it’s a lively, fun, and slightly rebellious take on luxury. If you’re looking for a place that combines high-end comfort with a youthful, playful vibe, this hotel is a great choice. The design risks it takes, while not always flawless, make for an interesting stay, and the views from the pool and rooms are unbeatable.
It’s a hotel that caters to a younger crowd or anyone looking for a non-traditional, energetic atmosphere. If you're after something chic, fun, and full of personality in Guangzhou, the W Hotel won’t disappoint, just don’t expect the same level of classic luxury or attention to detail as some of the city’s more traditional five-star offerings.
