Greg's parenting is something I don't see talked about much in the fandom or when it is, it's just praised. More than once I've seen Greg being called a great dad and ranked high when it comes to Steven's parental figures. However, Greg's parenting is not something I would refer to as good or even decent. Many of his choices are careless which borderlines on neglectfulness. His carelessness is demonstrated before Steven was even born. The comics reveal that Steven was around 4/5 when the house around the temple was built by the gems. Steven himself refers he grew up in a van. Even if Steven was younger, Greg did not plan on housing at all for his kid. He doesn't have access to a shower--we see him bathing in the ocean in the 90's- and he doesn't have access to heating and cooling, things Steven would have needed as a kid in the summer and winter months. Greg has to rely on Vidalia's kindness in the winter when Steven was an infant. Greg could have asked Rose to wait till he at least had an apartment or he renovated a small part of the car wash into room (if there's a back room). He did none of this though and instead he just had a kid without thinking about how he'd provide a proper shelter for him at all.
Even from a young age we see Steven wearing Greg's merch and not much else. Even when the gems were folding Steven's shirts they were all Greg's merch. This could be explained as cartoon logic but I just thought it was interesting. I won't dock points from Greg for this but it was just something I felt like pointing out.
Tumblr media
Rose isn't responsible for Greg's neglect. Rose herself was incredibly mentally ill and her death was an act of self destruction. Rose knew so little about what it took to raise a kid; she didn't even know what a baby was for years. Greg knows this, Greg also knows she isn't human, of course she won't know how to raise a baby. It takes two to make a kid meaning they had talked about it and Greg had most likely told Rose he'd handle the human stuff.
Rose also never wanted to be a mother. She knew she would die when she gave birth, she had no plans on raising Steven herself. She left tapes for Steven and might have helped with other prep we didn't see (getting Steven baby clothes). At the end of the day, she still wasn't the human and wasn't around when Steven was alive. None of Greg's parenting faults are hers.
Tumblr media
During the show, Greg has not matured. In the first season, Greg breaks his leg. When Steven heals it he lies and says it wasn't healed. This messes up Steven's powers and causes them not to work for months. He did this just to spend more time with his son which is insane. He isn't the kid in this relationship, Steven is! Yet Steven ends up being mature than him several times. In the finale of S1, Steven tells Greg what happened on the ship and he freaks out in front of Steven. Of course a good parent would be worried but a good parent also wouldn't freak out in front of their kid and drive away. Even if he was worried which is understandable, his reaction was debatably horrendous. He made Steven feel like he couldn't talk to Connie about what happened or he'd hurt her.
Tumblr media
Steven himself says he goes to Greg for "dad stuff" not human stuff. He gives the "human stuff" role to Connie which basically implies Greg didn't really care about making Steven feel human (we get this confirmation in future). Greg never takes the steps to make Steven feel human or get him connected to his human side. Even if he wanted to homeschool Steven (which he didn't, the gems were the ones who taught him) he should have taught Steven about what school was and grades were at the very least. Greg neglects to do this which makes Steven feel detached from his human side. He tends to be tactless when discussing humanity around Steven. When Steven was around he tells Connie, "Us humans need to stick together right?" not seeming to think about how that would make Steven feel. In Future he tells Steven that he's a gem as an excuse when Steven brought up the lack of schooling/doctors visits. He seems to completely ignores that fact Steven is half gem AND half human. He treats Steven like a gem more than a human which leads to Steven not feeling fully connected to either half.
Greg also never takes Steven to the doctor. This is something every kid needs, even half gem ones. Being half gem he could have had health issues stemming from that but Greg doesn't take precautions. He had fractures all over his body and even though they were healed, still needed checking on. Not to mention a doctor most likely would have recommended Steven a therapist at a far younger age then he got one in future.
Tumblr media
Overall, Greg wasn't the greatest dad. He could have done better and I feel hard pressed saying he did his "best". Steven is allowed to feel resentful because Greg's parenting caused Steven several issues, he never was able to properly socialize as a kid. He never got check ups. Greg never made him feel human.

Anyway here is a screenshot redraw.
I find the beef between younger Pearl and Greg endlessly funny. I wish we could have seen more of them before Steven.

Greg is so uncriticized in the fandom and it drives me crazy. In so so so many cases Greg and Rose are seen as healthier, better, and "meant for each other" when this couldn't be further from the truth. Greg was the one who enabled Rose, he didn't care about her on a deep level at ALL. He was the selfish one when he decided to have a kid with Rose. He could've asked Rose if she was sure, if they wanted to wait another four years. He could've made sure they at least had housing and doctors and proper care for the kid- Rose wasn't the human, she doesn't know what babies need but Greg did. Greg however did none of this, he had a kid he was never ready for and allowed Rose to kill herself. Rose was mentally ill and needed help, Greg was immature and selfish.
Greg isn't just some guy, he is both a bad partner and dad. Him telling Rose the past didn't matter isn't a positive thing. This just made Rose worse. Greg literally loved Rose based on looks, Pearl loved Rose for her personality. Pearl loved all of Rose, Greg only loved a small part and didn't care to learn more. Yet, he's the "better" one?? Some of you are so biased towards male characters and m/f ships and it shows.
