one thing i like about over the garden wall is that its ending is pretty optimistic even if you interpret it to mean that the brothers never returned home and did in fact die

greg and wirt still got a chance to reconcile and mend their relationships. wirt got to be brave, greg got to be hopeful and clever, and they both got to be heroes at the end of the day. that means something, and us seeing their story means something, even if they died at the end
