The Gentleman #1
Tumblr media
The Gentleman #1 SFC Comics/Evoluzione Publishing 2018 Written by Greg Anderson Elysée Illustrated by Massimiliano Veltri Coloured by Marco Pagnotta Letttered by Micah Myers     The Gentleman finds himself drawn to Espere St. Lanmé, mysterious and alluring, seeking help and protection from a being of possibly supernatural origins. Unfortunately to protect her, Oliver must succumb to his special abilities, a hereditary curse that uses his body as a key and vessel to the Void, an ancient evil with the means to destroy all life as we know.     I have been a fan of Evoluzione for a while now and I do so love when they send me something as completely unexpected, thrilling, engrossing and amazingly diverse. I doth my cap to Greg Anderson Elysée here for the way that this is written. I found myself engrossed in the story very quickly and as the layers of Ollie and his life are peeled like a Bloomin' Onion we begin to glimpse how incredibly complicate this man truly is. For a debut issue this rocks it with it mmhmm out man let me tell ya. So totally, utterly and completely captivating in ways you have to discover for yourself to truly appreciate. Also when I said diversity I meant it, sexuality is fluid and undefinable and the relationship Ollie has with Ralphie well to discover more you must pick up the book.     The way that this is being told is extremely nice to see. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exquisitely well. I like how we see this being told and how natural the events flow together and into one another so that it just feels like how you live your life. The character development is interesting to me and it fascinates me that we learn about Ollie through others and his actions rather than him revealing anything. Though Simone Simon is the real star and scene stealer. The pacing is phenomenal and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way we see how all of this creates the books ebb & flow.     I love not knowing what to expect when I read a book. It is why I try to keep my books as spoiler free as I possibly can. I talk about my experience reading the book and highlight things as seen through my sometimes overly critical eye and I gotta tell ya there isn't one thing about this book that isn't damn near perfect.     The interiors here are really rather gorgeously rendered. The linework is exceptional and how we see the varying weights AND various techniques being utilised to bring us this level and quality of attention to detail blows my mind. I have been reviewing old school comics recently and the techniques we see here are utilised then but with merged with today's newer style of comic art so the experience is truly unique in a visual sense. The way that we see backgrounds and the importance they play in the story as well as within the composition of the panels to provide depth perception, scale and that overall sense of size and scope for the story is amazing. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show this masterful eye for storytelling. The colour work we see is exquisite as well.. the way that we see the various hues and tones within colours and how they create the shading, highlights and shadow work is beautifully rendered. That a lot of this is in the dark and the colours are dark and muted and yet still retain all this depth and dimension is expertly rendered.      If you couldn't tell by now this is one of those rare books that comes along once every so often that proves no matter how long you've been reading comics there are still surprises out there and you just have to find them. I cannot stress enough that companies such as Evoluzione are home to some of the best storytelling there is to offer.

Post 1 of 2:::: Week TWO of the MECCAcon ARTIST RESIDENCY, this week w/ @nstevenharris Harris, is a wrap!! The students were thoroughlyyyy engaged w/ STEVEN, and many were sad he wasn’t returning on Monday, lol. He taught storyboarding, splash page, character development, and more! It was absolutely wonderful, and we are so grateful for Dr. Mayowa Lisa Reynolds for providing DSA Detroit School Of Arts High School as a platform for the program! Next up: Shawna Mills, then Carl Jones! (the 1st week was w/ Greg Anderson Elysée!) I’m horrible thinking on my feet, but Greg Anderson Elysée, the creator of the Is’nana: The Were-Spider comic book series, had a great answer to the question of “How do you create a surprise villain character?” The question was posed by an audience member of the 2021 Boston Comics in Color Festival. Elysée, cartoonist Micheline Hess, and I were panelists on the Writing for Comics session. The panel was moderated by Arielle Gray, who covers art and culture for WBUR. I promised to share my response in my next blog post, so here it is:
To create a surprise villain, I would have the unrevealed villainous character help the protagonist achieve a long-term goal or satisfy a yearning. But because the protagonist is so elated to be achieving his dream, he is blinded to whatever motive the villain is actually loyal to. In this scenario, the protagonist and the reader may know just fragments of the villain’s past: the source of his true loyalty.
I’d love to hear how other writers would approach this challenge. If you email me at “cecilhall (at) yahoo.com,” I’ll add your advice to this post!
BTW-You can catch a recording of Day 1 of the April 2021 virtual sessions of the Boston Comics in Color Festival here: https://www.facebook.com/ComicsInColor/videos/596373044932691/  (The Writing for Comics session starts at the 16:00 mark.)
Organizers of the Boston Comics in Color Festival, thank you for having me as a guest!

In the realm of Young Adult Non-Fiction, "Dreamer" by Akim Aliu is a graphic memoir shedding light on the author's journey as a Ukrainian-Nigerian-Canadian hockey player, highlighting the challenges of systemic racism and the power of resilience. "Sufferah" by Alex Wheatle delves into the author's experience in the British foster care system and the 1981 Brixton uprising. "Split Decision: Life Stories" provides dual perspectives of rapper-actor Ice-T's rise to fame and his former partner's life of crime. "Work With What You Got" tells the courageous story of Paralympian Zion Clark. "Summer of Hamn" by Chuck D illustrates the cycle of violence in major 2022 American events.

I have so many stories to tell and so many ways I want to put them out that while I was at work, I'd draw on #postits to keep my pen fresh! Inspired by Greg Anderson Elysée, and his short stories for Isnana the WereSpider, I've decided to write and illustrate a few 8 page shorts featuring #LuizaandtheCrew, show her supporting cast some love, and in turn, show some different cultures some love in Pop Culture. . . . This venture has me researching #Ghana and in doing so, I learned that people from Ghana name their children according to the day they were born. I realized that I needed to change Quentin's name to Kwame as he is Saturday born. I want to show respect to the people I write about and help bring positive stories to the world that dont usually see the light of day. I hope to honor Ghana and it's people with Kwame and his story, and this image is what will inspire the cover of his chapter! . . . This will also be my very first self published comic, published in a traditional format with word balloons and all! I am excited to try this transition and I hope you stick around for the ride. All of the "A Reason to Smile!" Books have been published due to my kickstarter projects and this will be on there as well. Stay tuned as I am on page 2 of the 8 page story so far! . . . #postitfortheaesthetic #postitnotes #postitart #AReasontoSmile #AReasontoSmileSeries #childrensbook #childrensbooks #childrensbookseries #graphicnovel #graphicnovels #graphicnovelseries #comicbook #comics #comicbooks #comicbookseries #comicbookart #childrensbookart #selfpublished #selfpublishing #kickstarter #kickstarterfunded #africancharacter #Ghanaian #authorsofinstagram #readmorebooks #readtoyourkids #JavierCruzWinnik https://www.instagram.com/p/B-z8zuDBSWY/?igshid=1r8xrf6rls2tk
