#185 Sólo los Valientes - Only The Brave (2017)

Brendan McDonough (Miles Teller) es un joven en paro con adicción a las sustancias que deja embarazada a una chica joven con la que ha tenido una fugaz relación, está embarazada de una niña. Por mucho que ella lo aleja, Brendan se siente comprometido con la niña, ya que él sabe lo que significa nacer sin padre, por lo que decide terminar sus estudios de ATS y presentarse a las pruebas de bomberos forestales de su pueblo.

Por otro lado, Eric Marsh (Josh Brolin) es el superintendente de Fire and Rescue Crew 7, una unidad de bomberos forestales que busca subir de posiciones para llegar a ser bomberos de élite y estar en primera línea de fuego. Para ello tienen que pasar como equipo varias pruebas.

El incendio se comporta como anticipó Eric y el vecindario se destruye. Eric habla con el jefe de bomberos sobre su deseo de que la Tripulación 7 se convierta en un hotshot certificado. Duane (Jeff Bridges) advierte que ningún otro equipo municipal del país tiene ese estatus y que tendrán que comprometerse con una temporada laboral más larga. Esto frustra a la esposa de Eric, Amanda (Jennifer Connelly), a quien le molesta que el compromiso de tiempo ya impida que Eric quiera formar una familia.

La tripulación entrena duro y finalmente es enviada a un incendio forestal para su evaluación. Pasan y se convierten en los "Granite Mountain Hotshots". Natalie comienza a aceptar a Brendan y lo deja pasar tiempo con su hija.

Brendan quiere ser como Eric y no sabe que Eric tiene mucho más en común con él de lo que se imagina.

El equipo trabaja duro y consigue ir avanzando posiciones, pero tienen que luchar con dejar a sus familias mucho tiempo desatendidas y ponerse en peligro constante. Brendan quiere estar más presente en la vida de su hija y decide pedirle una recomendación a Eric para otra brigada más alejada del fuego, Eric se enfada y le desea lo peor, recordándole que él lo sacó de las drogas y le dio un motivo.

Los Hotshots de Granite Mountain son llamados al incendio de Yarnell Hill. Entrando en la zona de fuego, Eric le dice a Brendan que lo ayudará a asegurar una transferencia para que pueda pasar más tiempo con su familia. La tripulación comienza un contraataque para contener el fuego, pero un avión cisterna lo confunde con un fuego secundario y lo extingue. La tripulación ahora tiene que reubicarse, por lo que Eric envía a Brendan a un terreno más alto como vigía. Cuando el viento de repente se intensifica y cambia, Brendan es rescatado por otro equipo y evacuan a la sede móvil. El resto de la tripulación se dirige a una zona segura después de darse cuenta de que el fuego en rápido movimiento es demasiado intenso.

El fuego toma velocidad y salta la zona segura, continuando hacia la brigada y cortando su ruta de escape. La tripulación despeja un sitio pequeño y Eric llama a un avión cisterna para apagar el frente de fuego que avanza rápidamente. La brigada despliegan sus refugios contra incendios compactos.

A medida que el fuego azota a la brigada, varias llamadas de radio quedan sin respuesta. Por lo que todos son conscientes de que la brigada completa ha caído. Brendan escucha la llamada de radio desde el primer helicóptero que llega al lugar: se confirma que los 19 miembros de la tripulación fallecieron.

Brendan va al gimnasio donde están las familias de sus compañeros de brigada para dar la cara y darles respuestas, pero lejos de sentirse mejor, Brendan colapsa y se rompe por la maldición del superviviente.

Tres años después, Brendan lleva a su hija al enebro que fue salvado por la tripulación. Durante los créditos finales, se muestran fotos de los verdaderos Granite Mountain Hotshots y sus contrapartes actores.

Today is the 11th anniversary of the tragic death of 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots on June 30th, 2013. It was the sixth deadliest firefighter disaster in history.

To honor their memory, the city of Prescott will dedicate a new memorial at the Yavapai County Courthouse. The ceremony begins at 3:45 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, with speakers including Prescott Mayor Phil Goode, Prescott Fire Chief Holger Durre and other city leaders.

The memorial has been in the works for over 10 years, but their memory will live forever through the memorial statue.

To cap off the ceremony, the courthouse bells will ring 19 times at approximately 4:42 in honor of the fallen heroes.

Only one hotshot survived that day. The lone survivor is Brenden McDonough, who was separated from the group earlier in the day to act as a fire lookout.

Those words came to me this morning after a night of panic about the state of the world. Maybe I’ve heard them before. Maybe I manifested them. I was feeling pretty hopeless about the human race and the damage we have wrought on this planet and onto one another. Kindness feels diluted by all the hate and fear that has taken center stage. It’s exhausting, and I know the majority of you can relate to these thoughts. I try to keep things positive on this page, but I’m only human, and quite often I feel more than I want to. I’ve been lucky enough to find a safe corner of social media where like-minded people can enjoy what I do and hopefully I can make this world just a little more bright. We’ve got to find our happy corners wherever we can. This is mine and all are welcome.

Grandfather Juniper Trail  - In Memory of the Granite Mountain Hotshots

#38 Upper Pasture Trail to #39 White Rock Spring Trail

Distance: 3 – 4.5 miles

 Difficulty:  Easy to Moderate due to rough terrain

 Elevation gain: minimal

Mangum Dental Hike-of-the-Month is reprinted from July 2016 and describes a hike to the Grandfather Juniper, a legendary tree with local fame.  The Juniper tree may be the largest known Juniper in the world with a circumference measuring over 26 ft. at the base.  The tree is estimated to be 1000 years old and was named one of Arizona’s “Magnificent 7” trees for 2015.  Despite these amazing statistics, the tree is special for another reason.  The plaque at the base of the tree tells the entire story. In short, this tree was spared from the Doce Fire in June 2013 through the valiant efforts of the Granite Mountain Hotshots from the City of Prescott Fire Department.  Later that month, responding to another urgent threat to homes and communities, 19 of the 20 hotshots tragically lost their lives. This hike is dedicated to their memory and this tree is a representation of how much we miss our 19 heroes.

Directions: From the intersection of Williamson Valley Road and Iron Springs Road, travel west on Iron Springs for 6.8 miles to Contreras Rd. (between mile marker 8 and 9).  Turn right on Contreras Road and head north .7 miles to a parking area on your right.  Those with low clearance vehicles will want to park here and start the hike. Moderate to high clearance vehicles can follow the rough road to the left (north) out of the parking area (Road 9261U).  The road follows a fence for another .7 miles to the trailhead.  

 The hike: A gate and a sign designate trail #38, Upper Pasture Trail. Follow this old road for slightly less than 1 mile to the well-marked junction of trails #38 and  #39, White Rock Springs Trail.  Turn left or north onto trail #39 and hike for just over ½ mile.  As the trail nears the turn-off for the tree, there will be a short stretch of quartz rock along the path then the trail drops into a creek bed.  Look to the left for a trail marker and follow the single-track trail that heads west. This short path will lead to the Grandfather Juniper, marked with a beautiful monument and plaque dedicated to the Granite Mountain Hotshots.

I just watched the movie “Only The Brave”, and was reminded that 30 June 2023 marked the 10th Anniversary of the loss of 19 Firefighters from the Granite Mountain Hotshots of Prescott AZ, during the Yarnell Hill Wildfire. Only one of the crew survived. The Granite Mountain Hotshots represented the only municipal Level 1 accredited hotshot fire response crew in the Nation, and their deaths marked the most significant loss of American Firefighters since 11 September 2001. R.I.P.

taylorkitsch Well. Looks like #onlythebrave getting a second wind. We are all proud of this one... Love learning about this form of fight n couldn’t of had more fun with the crew & cast and of course the Hotshots that trained us. Class acts. Literally couldn’t have done this w/out y’all. Never got to meet or hang with ‘Mack’ but I know we woulda laughed a ton:) Huge heart on him. His smile infectious. Funny! 10yr vet. Father a retired captain. Was born to do what he did. Film Review | Only The Brave

An absolutely and emotionally stunning story told, but weaves itself so easily through danger, humor, deep emotion, and loss. It’s really a triumph and especially now, as California and other states are suffering from wildfires, it’s sadly as timely as it could be.

The cast is exceptional; every lead gets a few really emotional moments. The other excellent part of the film is just how with only a few moments with each member of the Granite Mountain Hotshot team, the audience is really brought into that camaraderie and feels the bonds between the men.

That being said, there were many chances for this movie to raise up multiple female characters and flesh out that side of each man’s story (if the main focus was the team) but it really only accomplishes that with Jennifer Connelly’s character. Does not pass the Bechdel Test, tsk tsk tsk.

Regardless, it’s a deep film that touches some real human nerves and deserves a watch.
