Thursday 24 May 1838
6 ¾
11 20
rain in the night and rainy morning – breakfast a few minutes before 9 – comfortable here – good dinner bed and breakfast – off (from hotel d’Harscamp, Namur) at 9 40 – in 10 minutes pass pit-hill 2 convenient hoppers from the platform to shoot the coals from into the carts good for Listerwick? from 10 ¾ to 11 ¼ stop at little auberge to feed the horses – 2 or 3 other houses near – beautiful drive today – river close (left) – at 12 valley opens out into little basin, and to the left en face fine rock-seated picturesque ruin of old gothic castle of Pouillevache [Poilvache] (as pronounced by our postilion ) and picturesque little good village at its foot – good rye today – best and forwardest – quite in ear – rape – good clover – hops near Namur and orchards everywhere, and walnut trees – no vines today fine rich red loamy soil – bare rock about Pouillevache [Poilvache], and then the valley narrows again and is less wooded – less riante – wilder and then (right) en face clochée of village and old gothic castle of Crevecoeur high on rock above it – the citadel (left) of Dinant now in sight (left) finely situated on the rock above the ville and river, the grotesque (bulgy) topped spine of the cathedral at its foot (the top of the spine seeming to touch the bottom of the citadel) – hills bare and bleak and shingly about Dinant – at 12 20 entered the village of Crevecoeur (the old castle so high above quite lost to us) – and at 12 ½ cross the bridge into Dinant, into the grande place, the cathedral (left) stops up to the citadel en face and Poste just out of the Place (right) – a little drizzling rain but alight and see the cathedral – neat pretty good old gothic church – fine view from the bridge – old houses the premier story projecting all along the quai, right bank of the river (towards Namur)  - arched passages under several of the old houses – the citadel rock very fine – very nearly perpendicular above the cathedral and town – the steps cut rather in traverses – very striking – almost at the top a red painted wooden bridge across a chasm leading as we saw on getting up to a little flat place with sentry box and small gate or doors into the citadel – this was 430 6 or 8 in. steps high and there was still a greater height beyond (winding round the rock to the other side the citadel) – one of the garrison soldiers happened to be going up when we did – said the whole height was 408ft. – Had we asked permission of the commandant in the grande place, there would have been no difficulty in getting it, and we might have gone into the citadel   a pity -  no! we had not time – hoped to get to Mézièrs to sleep – 20 minutes ascending and descending our view from the red-painted bridge sufficiently repaid our toil – we were then 300ft. above the town the little ville looking down on the cathedral roof as on a footstool – the rock cut out into little bits of terrace gardens here and there – very picturesque – delighted not to have missed Dinant – off from D- at 1 8 5 or 6 minutes out of the town the road passes thro’ fine natural break thro’ the rock here about 8 yards thick and perhaps 200ft. or more high – the bottom part for perhaps 10 or 15ft. seems to have been cut thro’ to make the road – in 5 or 6 minutes more pass bridge over the river Lesse – hops and wood and orchards again – and very fine on quitting D- (would not have missed Dinant on any account) – almost immediately pass the little Douane de royaume de Belgique, and long steep ascent of great beauty – (Meuse right) leaving the ricer below to wind its lovely way without is we being now (1 50) at the top of the hill, entering a birch copse wood, and peeping over the rugged bleak mountain tops and sides – shingly (left) towards Namur – lovely and wooded all along and higher up the Meuse (right) – at 1 55 charming view for 5 minutes along the beautiful meanderings of the river and its lovely valley – very beautiful – En face (a head of us) high land in corn and grass and fallow – everywhere good farming – undulating road – at 2 ¾ began to descend (with sabot) thro’ wood into the lovely valley again – had slept for the last ½ hour on the highroad – soon take the drag off, as I would not trot with it on – descend into wide valley – bare distant hills form a large amphitheatre horizon towards France – Meuse, and town and fortress of Charlemont on the hill far in front right – fine winding descent thro’ wooded ravine and pass drybridge at the bottom (the old road used to go below (right) along the river) and then traverse up the other side at 3 4 and at 3 20 on the top, and look down upon the river and Givet and Charlemont on the commanding height just above Givet (right) and still seeming on higher ground than we – wide bare looking valley – at 3 35 pass little hardly perceptible bridge over ditch 5 minutes from the frontier village of ............. (on the hill side – rough rocky roads up and down it – above and below us all except the highroad we are on) and enter France – then little steep ascent and bleak bare hills all round and fine view of Givet in the bottom and Charlemont on the fine height just above – all bare – no wood – fine 4 arch stone bridge over the Meuse which drives Givet from Charlemont – at 3 50 stop at the Douane – no trouble – the soldier (douanier) merely asked if I had anything which ought to pay duty and on my saying no! refused a five fr. piece I offered him and let the carriage pass, and the respectable looking man who had taken my passport to look at gave it me back and we drove off without having been detained more than a minute or 2 – cross the bridge – at the Poste aux chevaux at 3 58 – seeing the people likely to be some while in changing the horses, alighted and A- and I walked to the hotel de Mont d’or to which Madame Mathioly had recommended us – observed it immediately after passing the bridge into the town (Givet) – went to ask the best hotels on the road – Rocroy  [Rocroi] Cheval blanc
Mézières le Palais Royal or Charleville tout près de Mézières Hotel du commerce
Reims Hotel du Lion d’or
Givet a fortified town – the postilion  told me en sortant he could not be back before the gates were shut, and I should have to pay ./75 per horse for sleeping outside – Givet considerably better town than Rocory [Rocroi] as I found afterwards and a much better place to sleep at – Left Givet by 2 or 3 gates at the last of which drawbridge – Gorge-like drive amid cultivated or shingly hills and ascend – at 4 ¾ fine look down upon river (left) and open valley – at 5 5 cross bridge over Vroin river at its junction with the Meuse – picturesque village and chateau other side river and village street on this side also – really a fine drive and woody again – 2 large blue slate quarries and picturesque looking little ville de Fumay encircled by them – drove close along an elbow of the Meuse in the gorge not seen till close upon it – rise the hill, and in ascending pass the little hotel de la poste (could not well sleep there) and then without descending into the little ville, stop about 50 yards from the poste aux chevaux at 6 ¼ - change horses and en route again at 6 23 – ascend the hills –very beautiful windings of the river – leave it, and turn right, a beautiful drive nevertheless – thro’ forest still amid wooded hills (the forests of the Ardennes) – our cocher a little tipsy – had frightened A- and I had been obliged to make him aller plus doucement 2 or 3 times – at 7 ¾ in passing poste aux chevaux the hotel de la poste ¼ mile or more from Rocroy [Rocroi] the leaders turned suddenly up, and in the effort to restrain them our postilion  and his horse were both down but got up together and after a narrow escape of overturn, we drove forward to Rocory [Rocroi] – passed Moat and drawbridge – then a mere gate, then another drawbridge, and entered the
SH:7/ML/E/21/0108
little fortified town, and stopt at the cheval blanc in the little grande place at 8 5 – a mere auberge, but the best I believe in the town – agreed to pay 17fr. for beds, supper breakfast tomorrow, and lights and everything – Poor place – and poor supper over at 10 – and breakfast very indifferent as to coffee – Rainy morning and day till between 2 and 3pm afterwards fair F55 ½° at 10 20 pm

Excerpt:
In a grand experiment, California switched on a fleet of high-tech greenhouse gas removal machines last month. Funded by the state’s cap-and-trade program, they’re designed to reverse climate change by sucking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. These wonderfully complex machines are more high-tech than anything humans have designed. They’re called plants.
Seriously, though: Plants breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. They break open the tough CO2 molecule and use the carbon to build their leaves and roots. In the process, they deposit carbon into the ground. For years people have excitedly discussed the possibility of stashing carbon in the soil while growing food. Now, for the first time, California is using cap-and-trade money to pay farmers to do it on a large scale. It’s called the California Healthy Soils Initiative.
In April, trucks full of fertilizer trundled into Doug Lo’s almond orchards near Gustine, California, and spread composted manure around his trees. He then planted clover to cover the ground between the trunks. In theory, these techniques will pull 1,088 tons of carbon out of the atmosphere every year. Lo’s is one of about fifty farms getting money from the state of California to pull greenhouse gas from the air. California is paying him $50,000 to try it out.

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day searching for four-leaf clovers in one of New York City's parks.  Exploring the Big Apple's parks is a great excuse to get outside while maintaining social distancing.
Central Park, New York City's most famous and iconic park is located in the middle of Manhattan.  One of the largest urban parks in the world, its 843 acres are filled with lakes, waterfalls, meadows and wooded areas.  With countless trails and open spaces, visitors can feel like they have escaped from the hustle and bustle of the City.
New York City's largest park, Pelham Bay Park, has 2,772 acres to explore.  Located in the farthest reaches of the Bronx, Pelham Bay Park is more than three times the size of Central Park.  With miles of hiking trails and bridle paths, and rich in history and greenery, Pelham Bay Park is worth the ride on the 6 train.  Highlights include Orchard Beach, golf courses, the Bartow-Pell Mansion and the beautiful shoreline.
Designed by Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux who also crafted Central Park, Prospect Park is a space that feels more organic than its Manhattan cousin.  An official, regal entryway at Grand Army Plaza welcomes visitors to the large park.  Main attractions include Prospect Park Lake, the 90-acre Long Meadow, the Picnic House and Litchfield Villa.
New York’s first elevated park, The High Line is on the remnants of the West Side Elevated Freight Railroad.  This stylish park combines the old and the new featuring beautiful views, over 210 species of plant life, shallow pools, lounge chairs, art installations, food stands, shopping and various historical points of interest.
A modern innovation, Brooklyn Bridge Park, has taken what was once a lifeless chunk of Brooklyn’s waterfront and transformed it into an expanse full of energy.  The spectacular views of Manhattan accompany visitors as the park and its attractions are explored.  The over 80-acre expanse includes Jane’s Carousel, the restored 1920s merry-go-round, sports fields, playgrounds, basketball courts and skating rinks.
Flushing Meadows, also home to the Queens Botanical Garden, Citi Field, The New York Hall of Science and the Queens Zoo, is always brimming with activity.  The highlight of the park is the famous Unisphere, a remnant of the 1964 World’s Fair, which was held at the park.

Text from guidebook
I have written out all the text I will use for my book from the original 1884 guidebook about Woolbeding and Stedham. I’m thinking of possibly annotating the text as to what has changed within what is written that I don’t have photos of or something very broad like the peterfield road that is mentioned. It is surrounded by trees and I wouldn’t say there are many cottages. It is a very main road too so has lost some of its beauty. I will probably annotate on the print out to show what it would be like in my book... Just a working idea at the moment but I will print out my book so far and show it in my 1:1 tutorial tomorrow.
WOOLBEDING
The Village of Woolbeding is like a beautiful jewel in a beautiful casket; the places that surround it are all beautiful - Midhurst. Easebouren, Cowdray, Iping, not one is without its element of beauty; its rivers, its heath, its hills, or its woods.
But the beauties of these places only prepare you for the excelling beauty of Woolbeding; here the attractions which struck you separately are so charmingly mingled, so harmoniously blended, that you feel you have hitherto only been going througha work of intuition, have been educating your eye and taste for the scene before it, and now gazing at its perfection, your of the beautiful is satisfied. From whichever side you come upon Woolbeding, the approach is in harmony with the place itself, whether it be from Iping, Easebourne, or Midhurst. There are few more charming roads than that from Midhurst to Petersfield, skirted on the one side by the high heath, with its rich swelling plantations of firs, its quaint Swiss build cottages, and its pretty gardens and orchards, fringed with graceful silver birch, the oak, the lime, the beech, and the ash. It overlooks on the other side the rich vallet of the Rother, which gradually widens until Sussex is lost in Surrey; but it is only the first half-mile of this delightful road that the visitor to Woolbeding has to tread; having passed the national school he must quit the highway and plunge down this shady road to the right; an arch of foliage, a leafy tunnel, with its high banks full of strangely-twisted roots, overgrown with ferns and ivy, primroses, and violets, and wild strawberries, with its rows of rounded oaks that bend in stately guise to meet each other. For some hundred yards or so, you are in half light, more or less broken according to the time of the year, and then you come upon a stone bridge across a stream, that tempts you to look up it and down it, so pleasant are its winding waters and its wooded banks; here, right before you, lies a scene which few could look upon without exclaiming, “How lovely, how exquisitely beautiful!” How is it possible to describe the spot, how, in fact, to describe in words any spot that nature has clothed with beauty! Feudal castles monastic ruins, high reaching cathedrals, any work of man’s hand may be described, but fields, woods, rivers, meadows, uplands, these cannot be described, for whilst in the infinite variety of nature the scene changes a thousand times, assumes a thousand lines and aspects, excites a thousand tones of feeling, the words used to describe them remain the same; they are but trees, meadows, and uplands, not the trees the meadows and the uplands that are in our mind’s eye, and which we desire to present to the imagination of others.
Yet to an English mind Woolbeding may be made in some slight degree palpable even by the ineffected medium of words, being essentially English in its beauty. The two square-roofed mansions, relieved by their numerous white-framed windows, looking out from foliage that gives to them at once an air of beauty and comfort, these are essentially English; so are the rich meadows on either side of the road, from the bridge to the Village Church, meadows only separated from the road by wooden railings, so that you are really for all purposes of enjoyment walking in them; here cows and horses are grazing on rich herbage, or sleeping under fine old trees. And let the eye  take a wider range, and behold the wooded uplands that rise behind the mansions, and the fields of corn that lie under those wooded heights, and all this will be felt to be English; and then the air of response, comfort, and happiness that reigns over all, the sense of completeness, of its having something of all those essentials which make up the ideas of comfort and beauty, this too is English; for if there be mansions, and church, and cottages, there are also the farmer’s solid-looking house, outbuildings, and gardens, there are also corn-fields, clover-fields, and turnip-fields, and the peculiarity of Woolbeding is that you cannot tell where the grounds terminate and where the farm begins; there is no sharp line of demarcation, no park wall, or high fence to divide the one from the other , but from grounds to orchard, from orchard to paddock, from paddock to cornfield, you glide from the useful to the purely ornamental, until, without being sensible of the change, your eye passes from the farmer’s fields to the gentlemen’s grounds. The beauty of Woolbeding is fully matured and ripened; has all the richness and fulness that ages of careful tendance alone could give it, and yet it has no touch of age, none of its decay or neglect.
In Spring, the road from the bridge is skirted with cherry-trees which are one mass of blossom, whilst side by side with them stand gigantic Scotch firs, with their smooth ruddy branches; scarcely less grand than the stems themselves, and when these cease to draw your attention you come upon the pride of English forests, the oak, with its sturdy strength and well-rounded symmetry, the yew, with its deep rich green and waxen berries, the lime, the beech, and the chestnut, all these go to make up the roadside shade and roadside beauty.
The road, after passing by the church, plunges into another leafy tunnel that you cannot see the issue of, but about this the visitor need not trouble himself, but follow the broad steps to the right, get over the low stile, push open the loose gate, and you are out of the road and in a paddock, at the back of the two square mansions and the little low church; you are doubling the village, taking it in the rear, not less beautiful than the front, and with the river still with you (or it clings to Woolbeding, and winds round it on every side, as if it could not bear to leabe it), and with the hills before you, which recede from the village as if they had left it with reluctance, and with trees and hedges always by your side, and rich herbage at your feet, with the cry of the cuckoo or the cock-pheasant as the case and season might be, in your ear, you walk round Woolbeding, turning at every step to look back at it, leaning ober every gate to take in the wider prospect about it, loitering at every hedge to gather some wild flower, or some tempting berry; and so imperceptibly you pass from Woolbeding, and are once more entering Midhurst, not by the Petersfield but by the Easebourne road, and whether you come again, or come no more, you take with you the impress of a scene which years cannot efface.
True, you have only seen material beauty, you have looked upon a fair scene as you might upon a fair face, with only the power to guess upon the kind of soul which dwells within it; you might pass on and never know what kind of inner life possessed that spot – whether it was grovelling or soaring, rough or gentle, earthly or celestial, Pagan, Turk or Jew. Yet even with this ignorance of its higher attributes, or with a knowledge that there were none, the beauty of the scene would not be without its influence upon you for good; you would feel as Maranda felt, when she gazed upon the face of Ferdinand “There’s nothing ill can well in such a temple; if the ill spirit have so fair a house, good things Will strive to do well with it.” In the Creation of such a spot, Good influence, you feel, must have been at work; In the peace, the repose, the softness, the beauty of the scene, in the absence from it of anything to jar upon the feelings or to vex the mind, there must be the working of good spirits.
And in the calmness that comes over the mind in the presence or in the recollection I was such a spot, is there not a proof even to the merest wayfarer that, in the conflict of good and evil In this world, good has won a victory in the village of Woolbeding ? But it does not follow, as a matter of course, that the gazer at this scene should only be touched by its external features. His sense of its material beauties may be heightened by a knowledge that it has another and a higher beauty, that it has a moral and a spiritual beauty, A heart and a soul. We do not speak in a Pagan sense; the “great god Pan” has long Been dead; our woods are without dryads as our fountains are without naiads. We have discarded these fancies, And settled down to realities.
The church of all Saints, Woolbeding, is a small edifice, Consisting of chancel, Nave, and a square tower containing three bells. Before the church was repaired and enlarged in 1880, the east window was filled with stained glass brought from Mottisfont Priory in Hampshire, a property of the family of Mill, Baronets, to whom the manor of Woolbeding formally belonged. The subject being the taking down of the Saviour from the Cross. Fragments of this glass have been inserted in the north window of the chancel, and in one of the South windows of the present church; they are very good specimens of English 15th century work. In 1880 the church was repaired and in part remodelled, a new chancel was built in the late decorated style, replacing a much smaller one which had been erected about the beginning of the 18th century. The tower at the west end was thrown open to the nave by the insertion Of a large arch in its eastern wall in place of a low doorway; a porch was added on the south side of the tower. The walls of the nave which are of early Romanesque work, about the middle of the 11th century, being divided externally by narrow vertical stone pilasters like the tower of Sompting and the walls of Worth, have been preserved unaltered. Internally the church has been fitted with solid oak benches, and oak screen handsomely carved, pulpit, lectern, reredos, and sedilia all of the same material. The stained glass in the east window was designed and executed by C.E. Kempe, Esq.
STEDHAM
The next village on our route is Stedham, which may be apprached if driving, by returning to the main pertersfield road and continuing on for about a mile, until having passed  the bridge and coming to the cross ways on the top of the hill, the road leads to Stedham.
For the pedestrian there is a shorter route and a most delightful walk; passing the manor house at Woolbeding, on the right, lying back in a garden is a farm-house, opposite it are some stone steps surmounted by a wicket gate; entering which, and following the pathway until a similar gate is reached, the footpath bearing to the left takes you through a pleasant coppice; on emerging from it you find yourself in a meadow, intersected by the Rother. Continuing the footpath, the turn to the left leads up past the mill and out by Stedham Church. This is a modern structure with the exception of the tower, which was rebuilt in 1670; it consists of a nave and chancel, and is dedicated to St. James; the incumbent is the Rev. R. C. Bull, M.A. In the Churchyard is a fine yew-tree, measuring twenty-eight feet in circumference.

Besides having vegetarian dishes on their a-la-carte menu, Long Chim also serves a Vegetarian Set Menu (S$69++) which offers common Thai choices like vegetarian spring rolls, green papaya salad, and aromatic vegetable curry; and not-so-common ones like chive cakes, beancurd seaweed asian celery broth, grilled long eggplant; to name a few. Indulge!
Oh, did we forget to mention that the celebrity restaurant is also value-for-money – think Vegetarian Weekend Brunch Menu at just S$49++. We have tried their vegetarian lunch, check out the review here.

Jim Thompson

The Best Phad Thai Noodles I’ve Ever Had
When you’re talking about the best Thai restraunts in Singapore, Jim Thompson’s name has to be right there among the top ones. An excellent Thai restaurant with a dedicated vegetarian following, and definitely one of our favourites! Start your meal at Jim Thompson with the off-beat Siam Sunray (S$26), aptly referred to as “Thailand in a Glass” – think delicate flavours of Thai spices like lemongrass, ginger, kaffir lime and even red chilli.
For soups, its always hard to choose between the Tom Yam or the slightly-sweetish Tom Kha Pak (S$20) with a creamy coconut-galangal base. A meal here must always always have a salad – choose from any of the Pomelo Salad, Green Mango Salad or Green Papaya Salad and you can’t go wrong. From the mains, our favourites include Phad Thai Noodles (S$22), Gaeng Khew (Green curry, S$22) and Gaeng Phed (Red Curry). The Tau-Hu Phad Priew Wan (Stir-fried tofu and vegetables in a sweet and sour sauce, S$20) is also a winner, although on 1 or 2 occasions, it was a wee bit too sweet. Wind up the meal with the mandatory Mango Sticky Rice or go for something different and healthier like Som-Chun (S$12) – a mix of fresh oranges topped with lychees, shredded raw mango, sliced ginger, toasted coconut and roasted peanuts, served in ginger syrup.

Patara
An elegant Thai restaurant that has been around for almost two decades, Patara has made a mark with its dishes. With a separate vegetarian menu, you can choose from a range of appetisers, salads, salads, mains and desserts. Some of the veg dishes to try here include Tom Yum Hed or the Soup Phak (Clear broth with mixed vegetables). Among the appetisers, try the Porpia Jay (assortment of crispy spring rolls), or the Kaffir Corn Fritters. For mains, Patara offers an array of vegetarian gems like the Gai Jay Krapao (sautéed mock chicken with garlic, chilli and crisp basil), Tofu Ob Mor Din Jay (baked tofu and vegetables in a clay pot with ginger and spring onions), Gang Kiew Wan Hed (Green Curry) and Gang Dang Phak (Red Curry).
To wind up your meal, venture beyond Mango Sticky Rice and get adventurous with Durian Sticky Rice, Chocolate Lava with chilli chocolate or Mun Chuem which is caramelised tapioca with coconut milk. Patara’s 3-course Executive Set Lunch (S$20++) has vegetarian options too.

Thanying Restaurant

Exquisite Fruit Carving at Thanying Restaurant (Photo credit: Thanying)
Located in the chic city hotel Amara Singapore, Thanying Restaurant is all about authentic royal Thai food served in a traditionally decorated space. I still remember Thanying as being the first Thai restaurant I went to when we moved to Singapore 12 years ago. I haven’t been in over a year now, but for years we freuented Thanying regularly for vegetarian Thai food.
As a part of the royal thai tradition of pampering guests, all dishes are served in bite sized portions. Thanying is also big on veg fare, with their vegetarian menu offering close to 30 dishes. Among their vegetarian delights, you can taste the Tawd Mun Kaopod (S$18++, Deep-fried sweet corn cakes, served with cucumber and sweet sauce), Keow Wahn Ma-Kua-Yaao (S$20++, Brinjal with thick green curry) and Phad Grapao Tao Hoo (S$20++, Stir-fried beancurd with hot basil leaf, chilli and green peppercorn).

  Sabai
A Thai restaurant with awesome food and great views, Sabai Fine Thai on the Bay focuses on the finest ingredients. Sabai Thai offers a grand vegetarian a-la-carte menu as well as a Vegetarian Set Menu (S$70++) and Weekday Set Lunch with veg options (S$31++ for 2-course, S$35++ for 3-course). The veg menus let you choose from an ample selection of appetisers, soups, curries, stir fries, rice, noodles and desserts. The Tawd Mun Kaopote (deep-fried sweet corn cakes, S$16.5), make for a good start. For mains, try the Panang Tao Huu (deep-fried beancurd topped with panang curry), Kao Op Sapparod (fried rice with deep-fried beancurd, pineapple, carrots, curry, S$18.5) or Guay Tiew Gaprao (stir-fried spicy noodles with deep-fried bean curd, chilli, fresh peppercorns and holy basil leaves). The veg menu does seem to have an over-dose of beancurd.

Jane Thai

With a special all vegetarian menu available, Jane Thai is a popular Thai restaurant which is getting a lot of love from vegetarians. Choose from Soups & Curries (S$10), Stir Fires (S$7.50) and Rice (S$8.50-8.90, with seamed rice for S$1). Their most popular vegetarian dishes include the delicious Green Curry with vegetables, Fried Tofu, Phad Thai and Pineapple Rice. Be warned that most food could be spicy, so do ask for the spice-level to be adjusted.

Jai Thai and Jai Siam is basically the same company with the same management. The difference is that the 2 Jai Siam restaurants are Halal ceritfied. The wallet-friendly chain offers a Vegetarian Menu with around 30 authentic Thai vegetarian dishes and you can choose to order them with/without garlic, onion or egg. The most popular veg dishes include Fried Rice (S$6), Green Curry, Panang Curry Beancurd and Fried Tofu Basil (S$7). Jai Siam also offers Vegetarian Bento Set Menu for S$8, including Olive Rice, Green Curry Vegetarian (S$7), Mango Salad and Beancurd Cashew Nut. They also offer Halal catering services that include an all-vegetarian menu for those parties where you want to treat your vegetarian family & friends.

Bali Thai
We’re not saying this is the best veg Thai food in town, but Bali Thai has a dedicated vegetarian menu with quite decent vegetarian options. Besides, Bali Thai has multiple locations around town, which makes it one of the more accessible Thai choices when you’re just out and about and Thai cravings set in – I have personally eaten here several times, while walking around malls.
Not just vegetarians, Bali Thai also serves Buddhist Vegetarians, with garlic and onion free options available on request. Bali Thai has a Vegetarian Bento Box (Bento Boxes starting at S$11.80) and a wide variety of vegetarian dishes on offer. Some of our favourite orders here include the vegetarian versions of the Thai Green Curry, Tom Yum soup and the Papaya Salad. My kids, who are too young to try spicy Thai cuisine, love the Thai Black Olive Rice, which is non-spicy and doesn’t have any strong flavours that might not appeal to fussy eaters. They can tone down the spicy-levels on request. I once forgot to request for medium-spicy and I couldn’t manage more than two bites of the fiery Papaya Salad.

Pepper Jade
A dream destination for Thai loving vegetarians and vegans, Pepper Jade’s wide range of  vegetarian salads, starters, soups, mains, rice, noodles and desserts whip up quite an appetite. The restaurant is all-vegetarian, they don’t use garlic and onions and they have vegan dishes on the menu too.
Some of the favourites here include Thai Fish Cakes, Tom Yum Soup in Claypot, Phap Thai, Blue Butterfly Pea Truffle Fried Rice and the ever-green Green Curry. Don’t eat eggs? Try the Son-In-Law Eggs with the whites made up of mashed yam and the yolks with mashed pumpkin. The “eggs” are then deep-fried and drizzled with a tangy sauce. Creative!
