Political Journey of Captain Amarinder Singh

Senior Congress leader Captain Amarinder Singh, has taken over as Chief Minister of Punjab and was administerrd the oath of office and secrecy by Governor VP Singh Badnore at Raj Bhawan in Chandigarh.

Those sworn in as cabinet ministers were Navjot Singh Sidhu, Braham Mohindra, Manpreet Singh Badal, Sadhu Singh Dharamkot, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Rana Gurjit Singh Sodhi and Charanjit Singh Channi.

He was inducted into the Congress by Rajiv Gandhi, who was his friend from school and was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1980.

In 1984, he resigned from Parliament and from Congress as a protest against the Army action during Operation Blue Star. Subsequently he joined the Shiromani Akali Dal was elected to the state legislature from Talwandi Sabo and became a minister in the state government for Agriculture, Forest, Development and Panchayats.

In 1992 he broke away from the Akali Dal and formed a splinter group named Shiromani Akali Dal (Panthic) which later merged with the Congress in 1998 (after his party’s crushing defeat in Vidhan Sabha election in which he himself was defeated from his own constituency where he got only 856 votes) after Sonia Gandhi took over the reign of the party.

He was defeated by Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra from Patiala Constituency in 1998 by a whooping margin of 33251 votes. He served as the President of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee on two occasions from 1999 to 2002 and 2010 to 2013, he also became Chief Minister of Punjab in 2002 and continued until 2007.

In September 2008, a special committee of Punjab Vidhan Sabha expelled him on the count of regularities in the transfer of land related to the Amritsar Improvement Trust by the Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party led government. In 2010, the Supreme Court of India held his expulsion unconstitutional on the grounds it was excessive and unconstitutional.

He was appointed as chairman of Punjab Congress Campaign Committee in 2008. Captain Amarinder Singh is also a Permanent Invitee to the Congress Working Committee since 2013. He defeated senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley by a margin of more than 1,02,000 votes in 2014 general elections.

He has been a member of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha for five terms representing Patiala (Urban) thrice, Samana and Talwandi Sabo once each.

On 27 November 2015, Amarinder Singh was appointed President of Punjab Congress in the run up to Punjab elections slated for 2017. On March 11, 2017 Congress Party won the State Assembly Elections under his leadership.

Amrinder Singh was sworn in as the 26th Chief Minister of Punjab on 16 March, 2017 at Punjab Raj Bhavan, Chandigarh. The oath of office was administered by the Punjab governor, V.P. Singh Badnore.

Imbibing principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, and unity, it promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace amongst all people without any discrimination.

On similar lines, LPU is imparting education and scholarships to many thousands of national and international students irrespective of their nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or opinions. LPU has also adopted more than 20 nearby villages. Besides, blood donation camps and allied social services are also a regular feature at the campus.

Telecom operators to track people under quarantine in Chandigarh - chandigarh

People quarantined in the city will be tracked electronically through their mobile phones to ensure they don’t violate mandatory rules, the UT administration ordered on Thursday after a daily review meeting chaired by Punjab governor and UT administrator VP Singh Badnore.

On a day when the total number of quarantined persons went up to 1,315, a rise of more than 100 from 1,206 on Wednesday, the administration decided to share the phone numbers of people under quarantine with telecom operators to monitor them.

“Telecom operators have been directed to track the location of those quarantined. In case of any violation, strict action will be taken by the administration under the law,”said UT adviser Manoj Kumar Parida.

People under quarantine are in no way supposed to move out of their location. Notices have also been put up outside their residences with the names and number of quarantined people in the house. Their status is also stamped on the back of their hands.

“There have been reports from police and neighbours about people not following all the laid down conditions of quarantine. In one case, questions were raised over the efficacy of the present measures in maintaining quarantine when the notice outside an IAS officer’s house was torn off. So it was decided that services of telecom operators would be requisitioned to track their movement,” said a senior UT official privy to the development.

States asked not to send patients without PGI consent

The administration has requested counterparts in neighboring states not to send any patients without consultation and consent of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER). This was decided to ensure that PGIMER, which has been declared a dedicated Covid Wing (Nehru Extension) can devote its full energy and resources to fight against the outbreak. Dr Jagat Ram, director, PGIMER, clarified that there was no shortage of funds for medicines and equipment in PGIMER.
