In a deadly assault, Boko Haram insurgents attacked a Nigerian military camp in Borno State on November 16, 2024, leaving at least 20 soldiers dead, according to military sources. The attack occurred in the town of Kareto, located in northern Borno, a region that has been embroiled in insurgency for over a decade. The assailants, believed to be affiliated with the Islamic State, launched the attack using a combination of weapons, including a suicide car bomb. Military sources told Channels TV that the Boko Haram terrorists destroyed a military vehicle during the attack, with some soldiers fleeing the scene. However, the insurgents managed to take control of the camp, setting it ablaze along with 14 vehicles. The attackers seized four four-wheel-drive vehicles and a substantial amount of weaponry, including heavy machine guns, before retreating. The full extent of the casualties has yet to be officially confirmed, but sources estimate that around 20 soldiers lost their lives in the assault. Governor Zulum Condemns Attack, Vows Continued Support for Armed Forces Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, condemned the attack, offering condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers. In a statement issued on November 19, 2024, Governor Zulum expressed his sorrow, stating, "On behalf of the government and good people of Borno, I convey our heartfelt condolences to the armed forces and families of the deceased. May Allah rest their souls." He further emphasized that the attack was a grim reminder of Boko Haram's continued efforts to disrupt the state's recovery efforts, particularly the resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their ancestral homes in northern Borno. Kareto is one of more than 20 towns being considered for the resettlement of IDPs. Governor Zulum reaffirmed his commitment to securing the state, stating that this attack would not deter the government's efforts to fulfill its responsibilities to the people. He expressed gratitude to the armed forces and security agencies for their sacrifices in safeguarding Borno and urged the people to remain steadfast in supporting the military in their ongoing efforts to combat terrorism. "We are eternally grateful to our gallant military and security forces for all they have been doing to safeguard lives and property in our state," said Governor Zulum. He also assured the public that the Borno State Government would continue to work closely with the armed forces to implement development and peacebuilding initiatives. The Ongoing Fight Against Boko Haram The assault on Kareto is the latest in a series of attacks by Boko Haram insurgents, who continue to pose a significant threat to the region despite ongoing military efforts to reclaim territory and restore peace.

âCowardly abductionâ of 280 students aimed at destabilising Nigeriaâ â Fani-Kayode
A former Aviation Minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode has condemned the abduction of over 280 school girls in Ganboru, Borno State, describing it as a âcowardly abductionâ, while calling for âextrajudicial elimination of all terrorists and kidnappers.â The former Aviation minister, reacting on his social media handle, noted that the recent abductions are a declaration of âWAR and we must fight it courageously, vigorously and mercilessly and take NO prisoners!â. He tweeted, âEvents in Gamboru Ngala in Borno State, Northern Nigeria where dozens of women were abducted by Islamist terrorists a few days ago and in Kuriga, Kaduna state where no less than 280 school girls were abducted from their school again by Islamist terrorists in the early hours of this morning are deeply troubling.â âMy heart goes out to the women and young girls that were kidnapped, to their husbands, parents and relatives, to Governor Uba Sani (@ubasanius) of Kaduna, to Governor Babagana Zulum (@ProfZulum) of Borno and the leaders, traditional rulers and people of both states.â âI wholeheartedly condemn these shameful and cowardly abductions and I call for the summary execution and extrajudicial elimination of all terrorists and kidnappers. âThis is a WAR and we must fight it courageously, vigorously and mercilessly and take NO prisoners!â âEvery single one of these cruel, callous, bloodthirsty and evil terrorist beasts that target, murder and abduct our innocent and defenceless women and children and that terrorise our people must be utterly crushed, decimated and annihilated and, in a glorious hail of gunfire and bombs, despatched back to hell where they belong. âI have no doubt that these attacks and abductions are being co-ordinated by forces both within and outside Nigeria in an attempt to destabilise our country and undermine our Government and we need to rise to the occasion, expose them as quickly and expeditiously as possible and hit them with everything that we have got. âIt is my prayer that the abducted women and children are rescued at the soonest and I have no doubt that both Governor Sani and Governor Zulum, in conjunction with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (@officialABAT) and our security agencies and Armed Forces, will ensure that this is done. âMay God trouble those that seek to trouble our nation and may He put to shame and destroy those that seek to undermine her peace, security and stability.â Vanguard reported how over 200 students of LEA primary school were kidnapped in Kaduna on Thursday, days after over 280 girls were kidnapped by suspected Boko Haram terrorists, in what could be described as a renewed insurgent attack on public schools in northern Nigeria. In a similar vein, over 17 people were killed early Friday in Benue and five policemen lost their lives to a gunmen attack in Ebonyi state on Friday, highlighting the rise in insecurity in Nigeria Read the full article

By âą Olalekan Fagbade Boko Haram may wipe Nigeria off the map â Borbo Governor Zulum warns Borno State governor, Babagana Zulum, has warned that the Boko Haram crisis may consume the nation if it is not contained. Speaking while hosting the reconstituted management board of the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) at the council chambers of the Borno State Government House in Maiduguri on Monday, he said the continuous existence of IDP camps in Local Government Areas of Borno is a potential time bomb. âThe position of Borno State on the map of Nigeria is very important to all of us. Borno State is bordering Chad, Cameroon, and Niger Republic. Our borders are so porous and therefore maintaining security in the North-Eastern subregion entails maintaining the security of the entire country.â âWhile North-West and North-Central and others are speaking about banditry, kidnapping, and others, ours is Boko Haram and ISWAP. Itâs better for us to control it, not for the sake of Borno State. The hub of Boko Haram and ISWAP is Borno State. We have to control them. âWe have to stop the younger ones from being recruited into Boko Haram and ISWAP, otherwise, in the near future, the entire Nigeria will be wiped off the map.â While lamenting the number of people in IDPs, Zulum said the development has worsened the plight of the people. âAnd then in Borno State, in the year 2012, about 3.5 million people were displaced. We returned many but still, we have over one million people: internally displaced people living in IDPS camps â that is increasing prostitution in IDP camps, that is increasing procreation without care in the IDP camps. There is drug abuse in the IDP camps,â Zulum added. âAnd therefore we want the intervention of the North East Development Commission. We want you to partner with the state government for us to close these IDP camps so that people can earn their means of livelihood by themselves. âOtherwise, many of the people will decide to join ISWAP and Boko Haram. These people who are living in IDP camps are a matter of great concern to all of us. On the assumption of duty, I promised the people of Borno State that Iâd close all official camps that are inside Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and we did so with the help of Almighty Allah. âNow my next agenda is to see how we shall close all the IDP camps that are in the local government areas without which there shall be no peace.â
