Do you want to find the finest companies of Gorilla Trekking in Uganda? Are you looking for low-cost or high-end gorilla tour operators? There are a few of them in this guide.
Mountain Gorillas In Uganda and Rwanda have benefited their respective tourism businesses by generating revenue from the sale of gorilla licenses each year. You may have heard many stories about gorilla trekking and be eager to experience it in either of the two nations, Uganda or Rwanda.
Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale, gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and other primate viewing trips in Uganda and Rwanda are available via the following businesses. Here you find the list of tour businesses given here only includes reputable firms. There are numerous deals and Uganda Safari Packages available in Uganda that can include additional Uganda Safari Destinations.
Where Are The Mountain Gorillas Found In Uganda?
Tumblr media
Mountain gorillas may be found in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Tracking takes place in five sites in these areas: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, Nkuringo in Bwindi Park, and Ntebeko in Mgahinga National Park. All of the places together have over 18 gorilla groups, however the permit number is limited since only 8 persons are permitted to visit a gorilla family every day for one hour.
Buhoma, located on the northern edge of the forest, is the most well-known and popular tourist destination. Rushaga, Ruhija, and Nkuringo are located on the southern edge of Bwindi, giving you access to numerous gorilla families.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the smallest park, measuring 34 kilometres in length. The park is home to one of the gorilla families that move between Uganda and Rwanda, making trekking this tiny gorilla population challenging. It is also part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, which encompasses 434 kilometres of volcanic mountains that connect Uganda, Rwanda,
How Many Gorilla Families Are Found In Uganda?
Tumblr media
There are numerous gorilla families in Uganda, however only a few have been habituated for tourist visits. By habituation, we imply creatures that have become accustomed to the presence of humans. This is also a time-consuming operation. Uganda Safari Tours has over nine gorilla families, thus the nation can only issue a maximum of eight licenses each day.
Buhoma has 4 gorilla families , Ruhija has 3 gorilla families (Bitukura,Oruzogo and Kyaguriro family) Rushaga has 6 gorilla families and 2 more for Habituation Experience and Research Nkuringo has 1 gorilla family.. These include the Habinyanja, Mubare, and Rushaga families who live in the dense tropical jungle. If you've ever seen films of humans meeting gorillas on the grounds of a resort, you've most certainly seen buhoma.
Both the Bitukura and Oruzogo families may be found in Bwindi's southern Ruhija region. The Nkuringo, Nshongi, Kahunje, Rushaga, and Businge families live in the southern portion of Bwindi.
In recent days, it has also been feasible to follow the Nyakagezi family, Mgahinga National Park's sole habituated family. Because the gorillas cross the border, viewing is unpredictable. According to UWA, the Nyakagezi family is one of the most entertaining gorilla families to walk with. It also has a larger number of silverbacks than the rest of the group.

Are These Luxury Lodges Uganda’s Best-Kept Secret?
Uganda is respected for its gorilla-crammed jungles, awe-inspiring Nile waterfalls, and untamed, un-touristy safaris thru the savannah. But simply recently, Americans have woken as much as this dreamy destination: The quantity of annual U.S. traffic grew via way of means of 31 percentage from 2010 to 2014, consistent with information from the Uganda Tourism Board. And once I visited in February, the overall supervisor at Apoka Safari Lodge showed that almost all in their visitors these days are from the U.S. (Thank the sturdy U.S. greenback and a stateside call for for uncrowded, off-the-beaten-route experiences.)
Tumblr media
This is extremely good information for the pleasant, landlocked country, wherein newly constructed, breathtaking motels have cropped up in lots of its 10 country wide parks (all with services you may not count on from their far off locations: Hot showers, flush toilets, and scrumptious eating places come standard). From deluxe “glamping” tents simply steps from the Nile to non-public motels tucked right into a tangle of rainforest, right here are seven of the first-class hotels withinside the Pearl of Africa.
Mahogany Springs Safari LodgeTucked into the Virunga Volcanoes mountain range, this assets contains sun-splashed cottages and a sweeping primary inn overlooking the Munyanga River and the plush Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Unwind subsequent to the fireside or at the wraparound terrace after an afternoon of gorilla trekking  monitoring; Bwindi is certainly considered one among a small handful of locations withinside the international wherein human beings can come inside toes of mountain gorillas, who eat, play, and nap with out giving their traffic a 2d thought.
Apoka Safari LodgeKidepo Valley National Park inhabits Uganda’s northernmost tip, a brief distance from South Sudan and Kenya. This is the safari excursion you’ve usually pictured: a dry, fawn-coloured panorama dotted with Tim Burton–esque acacia shrubs and fats Kigelia trees, and the roar of lions rolling in from remote hills. Apoka Safari Lodge is a stunning oasis of luxurious withinside the center of the rugged savannah; there’s a beautiful open-air primary inn, a curated handicraft shop, or even a luxe swimming pool, now no longer to say 10 good-looking cottages with non-public terraces and out of doors stone baths. Come for the remoteness; on 3 half-day recreation drives, my institution encountered elephants, zebras, giraffes, lions—and 0 different jeeps.
Kyambura Gorge LodgeThis 8-cottage inn, housed in a transformed espresso processing plant, has sweeping perspectives of each the thickly wooded Kyambura Gorge and the splendidly biodiverse Queen Elizabeth National Park. The 764-square-mile park is domestic to nearly one hundred mammal species and extra than six hundred species of birds, way to its various habitat, from papyrus swamps to crater lakes to open, rolling savannah. Kyambura Gorge is cutting-edge and luxe, constructed from regionally sourced, environmentally pleasant substances equipped and made my nearby craftsmen. Plus, it’s a perfect domestic base for birding, monitoring chimpanzees, and viewing lions, leopards, elephants, and extra, in addition to travelling the Rwenzori Sculpture Foundry & Gallery, a foundry and sculpture gallery offering the paintings of European and Ugandan artists (Damien Hirst helped fund its production via way of means of donating a paintings).
Baker’s LodgeOn the grounds of this Nile-the front resort, a touch signal published subsequent to a suspended rattan seat bears a warning: “Beware of crocodiles.” The reptiles, along side hippopotami, buffalo, baboons, screen lizards, and a menagerie of different creatures, are wont to wander alongside the river, beyond this assets’s plein air inn, 8 thatched “safari suites,” and little vegetation of out of doors seating. With Baker’s as a domestic base, move on a water safari beyond herds of elephants, hippos, and extra crocs than you’d like, and prevent at Murchison Falls National Park’s eponymous waterfall for a hike to the top: At the top, the Nile, miles huge at different points, squeezes over a gorge simply 23 toes across.
Ishasha Wilderness CampQueen Elizabeth National Park isn’t only a birdwatcher’s paradise; the Ishasha Sector is likewise domestic to one in all simply regarded populations of tree-mountaineering lions. (Yes, the delight actually may be located enjoyable many of the knobby branches of fig trees.) Ishasha Wilderness Camp, a constellation of 10 luxurious canvas tents perched subsequent to the Ntungwe River, is the most effective camp located in the park, for clean get admission to to safari drives and sundowners overlooking the pristine African bush. The belongings additionally arranges dawn hot-air balloon rides, in which the sight of predators at the prowl rewards the ones inclined to awaken earlier than dawn.
Tumblr media
Crater Safari LodgeKibale National Park in southern Uganda protects a swath of lush, misty tropical rainforest. A few minutes’ pressure from its border is Crater Safari Lodge, a nine-cottage belongings at the banks of Nyinabulitwa Crater Lake. There’s a cell spa facility and in my view designed furniture, and every room has its very own incredible view of the pristine lake.
Clouds Mountain Gorilla LodgeOne of the best-regarded (and maximum-awarded) hotels withinside the usa is Clouds, a pioneering eco lodge on the foot of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The motel includes a chalet-like important motel and 7 guesthouses, constructed from neighborhood volcanic stone and geared up with handwoven rugs and works from the usa’s maximum famend artists. Day 95 – Four Gorillas lodge
We woke up, had breakfast and hit the road. Sadly, an hour out, S realised he had left his safari hat at Mazikwe. “Adios, hat”. We had to change cars because the air conditioning in ours was busted and they could not find a new air conditioning fan belt. The company had to send a new car out to meet us. Our old friend, Alex, from the night of our arrival, drove six hours to meet us and swap cars. The new car was another Toyota Landcruiser, but a slightly smaller version. The air conditioning worked well and J found it a bit chilly after a while. On the way to Bwindi, Dona suggested we view a tea production factory, which sounded like a good idea. When we arrived, a guard with a standard issue AK47 waved us in and we then went on to the entrance. Unfortunately, since COVID, you need to have an appointment a week in advance to tour the facility. As we didn’t have that, we were turned away. We then headed on to Bwindi.
On the way we stopped at a rest stop, which had an ‘avocado house’ for a company that exports avocado seeds. J took some photos of the giant avocado sculpture outside the building but was disappointed that they didn’t actually sell any avocados. We then stopped in a town, Kabale, so Dona could pick up some white wine for us to drink at the Four Gorillas lodge, and any other items we wanted. He let J pick out some white wines. J went with the Four Cousins we had had at Mazikwe and a few other white wines. J liked the experience of being in a local grocery store. The staff at the grocery store were quite helpful. Dona was even able to exchange our warm bottles of beer for cold bottles.
The terrain on the way to Four Gorillas was breath-taking. It was very mountainous, but the villagers still managed to grow crops on the terraced hillside. The temperature decreased as we went up the mountain. On the way to the lodge, we stopped at a roadside vegetable stand. J and Dona got roasted corn for a snack. Four Gorillas lodge was down a long, single-lane dirt road. On the right side of the road was the national park (Bwindi), where the gorillas live. Apparently the gorillas make it down to the road from time to time and it’s possible to see them from the lodge.
Eventually we arrived at the Four Gorillas lodge. It is called Four Gorillas because when the owner was building it, he fell off a ladder during a storm, was knocked unconscious and pinned down by a beam from the lodge. When he woke up, the beam had been removed, he had been covered by a plastic tarpaulin, and a gorilla family of four was watching over him as it rained. Apparently the baby was even massaging his body. S doesn’t find this story 100% plausible. For example, why would the gorillas even think to put a tarpaulin over the owner when they sleep without cover in a nest? However, it does make for good marketing for the lodge. The main building was very impressive. The owner imported from the Congo to build the lodge, including a veranda which overlooks the impenetrable forest. The main building has floor-to-ceiling glass windows and is decorated with furniture imported from Dubai. There is a giant double-sided fireplace which separates the seating area from the dining area. The fireplace is fed by fresh charcoal. There is also a small bar right by the entrance.
After being shown around, we had some sparkling wine on the veranda, overlooking the impenetrable forest, which is actually a dense jungle that covers the mountains. We were placed in a cottage close by the main building with very few steps, to help out S. The room was bigger than Mazikwe, but smaller than many of the other lodges we’ve stayed at. It was sparsely furnished but had good lighting. Very importantly, it had hot water. J went to the room for a hot shower while S stayed on the veranda with Dona.
We had a few drinks in the main building next to the fire, where J sat on a fur stool and took in the heat. Dinner was an avocado and tomato salad with a honey mustard dressing, French onion soup and beef kebabs with vegetables and mashed potatoes. The lodge bakes their own bread, which is slightly sweet and very tasty. We finished with a caramel-encrusted pineapple slice for dessert, which was also delicious. We then retired to the sitting room for a nightcap. J loves the sitting area at Four Gorillas and would want to replicate parts of this in our next home.

Gorilla permits:
Only when payment has been received can permits for gorilla tracking in the relevant National Park be purchased. Getting a gorilla permit is not a guarantee of seeing a gorilla. Local conditions sometimes mean that access to the gorillas is made impossible at short notice. We are unable to accept liability for any circumstance that might lead to gorilla viewing being cancelled, whether it is closure of the National Park or borders; absence of the gorillas; security changes. Refunds are at the discretion of the relevant authority and we cannot accept liability for them. We shall use our maximum endeavors to obtain a refund and if a refund is paid by the relevant authority, we shall pass it on to the client. Note that the chances of seeing the gorillas stand at 98%.
Insurance It is advisable that before undertaking a holiday with us that you have, appropriate insurance for the type of holiday being taken. Such insurance should fully cover death, personal injury, medical expenses, repatriation in the event of accident or illness or death, cancellation or curtailment of the holiday by side and loss of, damage to, or theft of the clients' personal property. Activities with a greater inherent risk, such as mountaineering, animal tracking on foot, white-water rafting should be covered. Evacuation cover is provided by Juvenile Safaris Uganda for clients undertaking a full safari package like yourselves.

Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge: March 2019
New Post has been published on https://tagasafarisafrica.com/africa-travel-news/sabyinyo-silverback-lodge-march-2019/
Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge: March 2019
March was definitely the month of giving – we were overwhelmed with the sheer generosity of our guests who have really gone above and beyond to provide much needed assistance to SACOLA (Sabyinyo Community Livelihood Association), the governing body who own Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge. Our dear friend Margot Raggett donated a second lot of solar lights to the community, she also funded the Sewing Project in cooperation with Governor’s Camps. Margot, who has now funded two light projects, the sewing project and also made substantial contributions to the Gishwati Forest of Hope project, has been a major supporter and donor for many years. The handover ceremony was held on 9th March by Leonard Harerimana (of Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge),  Emmanuel Harerimana (of Rwanda Development Board) and local community leaders. It was a very exciting and special day, and we thank Margot Ragget deeply on bringing, yet again, the gift of light to this time 300 households in Rwanda!

The community’s message was: ‘Dear donors and friends of Rwanda, thank you very much for your heart full of love. We have no words to express our sincere thanks to you who put resources together to contribute to our better life. You and youraction of grace will remain in our hearts forever. God bless you all’
SACOLA and the family of Nyirarudodo are sending special thanks to another of our guests, Tiffany Hawes, who very kindly donated USD 7,000 to build the family a house. Tiffany decided to do this act of generosity a few days after her stay at Sabyinyo in October 2018.

And yet another of our generous guests, Charlotte Adams, delved deep into understanding the work of SACOLA and how it benefits the community, and ultimately gorilla conservation and decided to become a partner and successfully set up the “Donate a cow project”. Charlotte donated USD 5,000 to SACOLA for 10 cows which all were donated on Friday March 22, 2019. She has kindly committed to donating 10 more cows next July!

We had a group of YPO (Young Presidents Association) members stay with us at Sabyinyo after their 2019 YPO EDGE Conference in Cape Town. Their stay culminated in amazing treks among the gorillas and they were entertained over three carefully organised days at the lodge.
We were very excited to have the absolute pleasure of hosting actor and UNDP Goodwill Ambassador Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Boaz Paldi (UNDP Global Engagement Manager) and Stephen Rodriquez (UNDP Rwanda Country Director) on March 20th.

In his role as UNDP Goodwill Ambassador, the Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (best known for starring in HBO’s Game of Thrones), focuses on raising awareness and support for the Sustainable Development Goals. Also known as the Global Goals, they are a universal call to action to end poverty, fight inequality and stop climate change. Nicolaj is also a spokesperson for a global cause titled The Lion’s Share, which will see partners contribute 0.5 percent of their media spend to the fund for each advertisement they use featuring an animal. Those funds will be used to support animals and their habitats around the world. Mars is the first advertising partner in The Lion’s Share.

In March we also hosted Chris Harrison from ‘The Brand Inside’ plus Alex Millar (our Governors’ Brand Ambassador) and Thor Karstad (our Project Manager) as we set out to film an internal documentary of Governors’ Camp Collection. The purpose of this project is for our own internal learning purposes – and as we grow as a company – we want to maintain all the small and many identities and intrinsic qualities that make up who we, The Governors’ Family, are. The film will feature many staff from each department across the company, that we can share it with new staff and circulate amongst ourselves from time to time – to remind us who and what Governors’ is.

As we enter into “bamboo shoot” season here in Volcanoes National Park, the gorillas can be found in the lower reaches of the mountain where the bamboo vegetation belt is. Bamboo shoots are a favourite food of the gorillas, and it has often been suggested that they seem to get “drunk” off of them because they become very playful and gregarious. A more accepted explanation now is that because of the high nutritional content of the bamboo shoots, the energy levels of the gorillas are higher than average during bamboo shoot season! March, April and May can prove to be fantastic times of year for trekking due to the gorillas often being at lower altitudes, and often exhibiting rambunctious behaviour!

While you are with us at Sabyinyo, if you have the time, we would encourage you to visit Handspun Hope – a beautiful social enterprise employing women in the wonderful art of spinning wool into yarn. They farm their own Merino sheep (next to Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge) and harvest the wool when it reaches 3.5 inches long. The wool is hand-washed and dried, combed, then spun into single ply yarn on a traditional spinning wheel. Perhaps a most intriguing part of the process is the organic dyeing, where all natural ingredients are used to achieve the beautiful colours. The photos show the ingredients and the colours they produce. You can do a tour of the Handspun Hope facility to see this whole process, just a 30min drive from the lodge.

In weather news, we could not believe it when we watched not one, but two, hailstorms that came down around the lodge. The Volcanoes are known for their unpredictable weather, but this certainly caused a lot of curiosity and was a novelty for many of the residents!
Hail storm at Sabyinyo – provided much excitement!

Africa Safari
East Africa: Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania offer a more "romantic" Africa safari; the roads, solutions and cultures are more genuine than the Southern African choices.
The most famous parks from the Serengeti, Ngorogoro Crater, Masai Mara and Queen At the are in this part of Africa. The tropical African coast of Kenya and the popular Spice Island of Zanzibar. Anyone after animals, tradition and a few days of relaxation upon tropical beaches; East Africa may be the obvious choice.
Southern Africa: Zambia, Botswana, Namibia as well as South Africa are much more western and comfortable compared to East African countries nonetheless they tend to lack the "real Africa" flair that we tend to be accustomed.
The most famous recreational areas in this area are Chobe, Etosha, South Luangwa, Okavango Delta and Kruger; the popular Namib desert and Seafood River Canyon to the wines region of Stellenbosch. The southern part of Africa offers a very different encounter to East Africa.
West Africa: Mali, Burkina Faso as well as Ghana if you are after tradition and not bothered about animals. Mali is famous for Djenne, Timbuktu and Dogan Country; Burkina Faso is well known for its songs scene and Ghana provides historical sites from the aged slave trade years, exotic beaches and a few game recreational areas with very few animals.
Main Africa: Cameroon and Gabon is for the real adventure traveler. A safari through these types of countries will take you into a various world of tropical seashores, pygmies, bush meat marketplaces, surfing hippos and a large number of low land gorillas. This particular part is far less went by the average tourist and may be difficult to find an British speaking tour.
5 celebrity luxury accommodation to camping out are all on offer in East Africa, Southern Africa and To the west Africa. Central Africa anticipate a minimum of 3-5 star lodging.
Upmarket accommodation options tend to be endless however expect to spend hefty prices for 3-5 star accommodation. Facilities tend to be excellent offering well filled bar/restaurant, often swimming pools, very hot showers, flushing toilets along with the romantic African colonial design most tourist lodges as well as hotels have adopted.
Campsites have changed immensely through the years. Gone are the days when there was absolutely no grass to pitch tents, cold showers (if drinking water at all) and comfortable drinks in the fridge. The majority of campsites in East as well as Southern Africa are very nicely serviced and equipped offering hot showers, flushing lavatories, extensive bars and dining places and good clean space accommodation to upgrade in case camping does not take your elegant every night. Of course there is always the opportunity the power may go off as well as hot water may not last however overall campsites offer outstanding value for money and all the facilities the average traveller desires.

Information is hugely important to success in any endeavor. We have to know what’s going on to best respond. There are all kinds of clues we can take from our surroundings and the skies to fill in some of the gaps the loss of the internet leaves, but a biggie is going to be just finding things. Many of us know our immediate towns well, although we might not be intimately familiar with all the back alleys of every community and crossroad in our county. If the grid is down for any amount of time, locating resources in less-known or new places is going to get a whole lot harder.
There are any number of reasons we might go looking for something – or anything. We might develop a community that ends up needing a resupply, be part of a nomadic community that forms, or be hoofing it home from afar.
Information about where we are and what’s around us can dictate which roads we parallel or which direction we head. Never having been in an area before, we can still find places to seek refuge and supplies, as well as areas to give wide berths.
For example, I might think it’s a great idea to hit a park with old Indian caverns since there’s water, fishing, foraging, shelter, and maybe still canoes. However, I might not if I know they have their own zoo or are right beside a big cat sanctuary, given the number of caretakers who might release their charges to give them a chance.
I for sure do not want to tromp through the vicinity of a drive-through safari park that uses hot lines, chain link, and moats if there have been storms dropping trees. I walked in on that episode of The 100. I do not want to annoy a gorilla.
(The 100, by the way, is gorier than I’d have expected a CW show for/about young adults to be, and did not in some hit-and-miss scrolling appear to actually have any useful survival tips, if it was on your watchlist.)
Depending on the type of disaster – its speed, duration, and effects – schools and various correctional facilities might be excellent locations to aim for. If they were evacuated and have not yet been re-occupied, they can be great sources for food, bottled drinks, hygiene and medical supplies, clothing, weapons in many cases (guards, but also confiscated items), and tools.
The flip side is that some inmates are really bad guys, and some schools are shelters. Depending on the time of year and even the day of the week and their delivery schedule, there may or may not be anything left in them as far as foods go, either in cafeterias or in the staff room or snack carts and vending. Still, if I’m in month/year six and have assimilated a group of refugees or a growing compound, it might be worth checking for cleaning supplies, trash bags with their many uses, trash cans for water catchment or container planting, and windows to extend the season.
So how do we find these, and check for risks or other useful locations that might be near them, without our handy smart phone and computer? We pass the answers on pretty much every shopping trip, and can keep an eye out for them when we’re “shopping” after a disaster as well.
Phone Books
A local-area phone book can be a goldmine of information. Sometimes they contain only bare-bones, general maps, but there are sometimes more detailed sections. Some of the ads will actually have maps on them, too. They’re small and bare-bones, too, but usually there’s a reference from a major roadway nearby.
Those ads are particularly useful, but we can also check the white and yellow page listings for things like animal control (live traps, sometimes to regularly buckets and catch poles, radio equipment), hardware stores, hotels, schools, distribution centers (the places where semi trucks pick up and deliver all the things that make it to our store shelves), assisted living and nursing homes, seed and feed distributors, restaurants (we’ll detail that a little more in a minute), lockups, and various factories.
The books themselves have a ton of uses (now as well as later), but the information they offer is an enormous resource, too.
Brochures for Area Attractions
At the front of hotels and welcome centers, there’s usually a rack of glossy pamphlets. Those can give us a big boost for things to hit – or, as mentioned previously, to avoid. With them, we can find parks with fishing, camping and RV locations, some of the restaurants in the area, and oddballs like a wine trail or microbrewery, “Tigers for Tomorrow”, and an unclaimed luggage store.
Museums might get marked “skip it” as a resource center, but they have concessions and sometimes cafeterias and are unlikely to be on the top of the list for others to scavenge. Casinos, too.
Ball parks are among the many that now get a lot delivered fresh and may very well be an evacuation shelter, but they also have shelf-stable cheese and chili for the dispensers (freakish, I know) and other canned goods, powder mixes and bottled drinks, team shower facilities, tons of coolers and cleaning supplies, team-logo clothing and blankets, and umpteen paper products.
One of the charming aspects of those brochures is that most of them still include a map or turn-by-turn directions from a major roadway or the compass points. That can be super useful in a world where our phones and cars no longer give us directions on command.
There’s also usually a stack of phone books somewhere behind hotel reception desks. That desk area can also be a source for a pretty nicely detailed map of the area – even at the Motel 6 and Knight’s Inn level of lodging.
Freebie Publications
In front of all kinds of storefronts but especially supermarkets, there are stands with freebie papers and magazines. Some of them aren’t overly useful, but there are a few that can be huge helps whether we’re working in our local area or just passing through.
There are usually some vehicle-sales and real estate oriented books in there with them. A rental or a bank-owned/foreclosed home that was uninhabited at the start of a disaster stands a better chance of not encroaching on anyone’s territory, making for a safer temporary abode for foraging, resting, getting out of weather, curing game or fish, or recovering from an injury. Most private sales aren’t going to give you more than a phone number these days, but the dealerships can also be places to scout for a replacement part for our vehicle that can be salvaged or traded for, or net a vehicle that can actually be driven without a key (in dire emergencies with few survivors anywhere).
We commonly need a good map to take advantage, but if we can find one or make a list of cross streets to remember, we can find some useful locations in those freebie paper listings and advertisement pages. That can include locations of restaurants that may have less-obvious food sources the average looter overlooks, oil for biofuel, mechanics, and stores where the foods and drinks at most counters will have been overlooked, like a Marshal’s, Hobby Lobby, or Petco.
What, Where and When
By type of disaster and the type of scrounging being done – a person or a handful on foot or in a single vehicle, or a convoy going out for a surviving community – the risks and needs change. So will the locations with the most possibilities for us. If we’re avoiding attraction and well into a disaster, we’re more likely to skip over some of the “obvious” locations and those in dense areas. We might work outskirts instead, and focus on locations that were probably hit for one thing, but maybe not another or everything.
An example of that would be heading for a fuel processing plant or distributor instead of a gas station, or hitting that gas station with a sledge hammer to go through the CMU brick (as opposed to using weed eater cord to defeat the metal plate or trying to pick a high-value lock – not my best skillset) to check for food, drinks, tools, and bags in supply rooms instead of trying to siphon fuel from empty tanks with my handy garden hose and bike pump.
I might opt to skip a zoo in most situations. On the other hand, if I have buddies to watch my sides and back with a .3-something caliber repeater and I’m pretty sure I’ll survive the mental trauma that’s waiting when animals get locked up and abandoned, that zoo might be a handy source for animal feed, concession or vending locations, and hunting opportunities. Almost all of them will have buckets, tools, and cleaning supplies. If it’s empty, there’s fencing and barbed wire. There may still be veterinarian supplies.
I might even luck out and some of the petting zoo or tamable critters have survived the loose lioness or hippos, and I can convince them to come live with me since I’m there anyway (with my armed guards in case the gorillas survived, too).
Some of the locations to consider scouting for supplies are:
– Veterinarian offices, to include racetracks and sanctuaries
– Distribution centers – both manufacturer goods and end-point retailers (Mars and Buffalo Rock, as opposed to Target), or something like a Wakefield that services distribution and warehousing for other companies
– Construction and renovations sites and companies
– Towing and vehicle maintenance services
– Vehicle fleet services, especially with heavy diesel ratios or rental trucks/cars but including the power company, pest control companies, internet providers, and others that maintain a fleet

Remember, what we’re looking for isn’t always the obvious. Hospitals might be devoid of drugs and have run through generator fuel, but that generator may still be there and I might be after buckets, cleaning supplies, and linens. I might have my fingers crossed for a ride, but a vehicle fleet is also “just” a source of fuel, tires, oil, coolant, and batteries as well as other supplies whether it’s Enterprise, Verizon, or Bubba-Bob’s Construction.
What’s useful changes by our specific situation. How worth it a trip is varies, too, on our situation and the most-likely yields waiting for us. Worth an overnighter or if it’s in a direction that’s as good as any other? Maybe. But I’m not kidding about having buddies and the right firearms if it’s near a zoo.
On the other hand, if bad guys get me and I paid attention to the information around me and thus know there’s a zoo within a reasonable distance, I’m totally leading/sending them there and rooting for the gorillas, gators, and bears. Intel has all kinds of uses. We just have to collect and apply it.
