#the brothers rico #1957 #film noir #american cinema #phil karlson #lewis meltzer #ben perry #georges simenon #richard conte #dianne foster #kathryn grant #larry gates #james darren #argentina brunetti #lamont johnson #paul picerni #harry bellaver #paul dubov #william phipps #richard bakalyan #mimi aguglia #US noir adaptation of a Simenon novel; i haven't read this one i dont think but I'd bet good money the book doesn't feature the same #syrupy sweet (and frankly quite implausible) ending. that aside‚ this is very decent stuff indeed. it's character led‚ rather than being #too plot heavy‚ allowing Conte (an old favourite of mine since he stole The Four Just Men tv series away from his international co stars)#to shine in his role as a former mob accountant gone straight but dragged‚ by younger brothers‚ back into the grist of it all #he's brilliant‚ particularly in the early domestic scenes with Foster which are genuinely very sweet and charming�� with a realism and #natural rhythm that this kind of film so often fails to find in contrast to the stylized violence and hyper cool dialogue of the more macho #setpieces (not that i don't enjoy those too!). nor is Conte alone; this is a good film for actors‚ and every part down to the most minor of #middlemen‚ henchmen and goons (and there's a lot of those here) feels like a fully realised‚ honest creation by a talented actor #the melodrama comes a little thick in the back half and as said the very ending is.. far fetched. but definitely a superior whole of a film

stephanie hsu imo absolutely deserved the win over jamie lee curtis BUT to reduce jlc's role in eeaao to just "irs lady" is pretty much a willful misunderstanding of her character's role in the film imo. sure, deirdre starts out as simply the antagonistic irs lady. but over the course of the film her relationship with evelyn across the multiverses serves as a direct reflection of evelyn's growth, and i think it's a beautiful evolution where two opposing forces learn to see each other with kindness and compassion. it shows that the kindness that waymond inspires in evelyn extends beyond just family; at the end of the day deirdre is human too and deserves the same grace and compassion as anybody. she is a necessary and MEANINGFUL character and jlc acted her fucking ass off. and while i and many others clearly preferred stephanie hsu's acting and saw her as the heart and soul of the film, i do think it's blatantly reductive and a little bit obtuse to tear down deirdre's character just because the actress got an award that a different actress arguably deserved more.

i guess this is all to say you can be critical of the academy's decision without being reductive. some of y'all are doing too much and it really makes you look silly

#[art]#[2023]#cks #specifically it was just two still images of them but it was at the very end #had my silly outfit and all its piercings... plus ones I never gave them before? odd.#so I wanted to entertain the ''actors au'' idea but in all honesty they wouldn't make it much beyond a bonus background actor or dancer #(for musicals); they'd forget their lines so often it'd just be a hassle #usually casted as goons/minions/characters that follow someone of authority/in power #height helps; unintentional intimidation factor at times...#pretty unknown! like the rest. except cpn who's well-known for his looks (and acting to back it up)#something something... gestures. a scientist and their creation made of parts and through illegal means #of which someone (swt) is chasing said suspects down except it's hard to exactly realize [cks] is the creation in question at first #so it has that internal conflict as the film goes on of like. ough. aren't they [human] at this point? and ough. illegally made. but ough.#didn't ask to be made. trope of -> creation will not mind if it has to be dismantled and its creator would go through hell to Not let that #happen out of love and. anyways I'm not going to explain the synopsis of the actual plot they play (was kept kind of unknown due to failed #marketing) but i do think they should get to know each other behind the scenes #and something etcetera any homoerotic or romantic scenes they play together Stop being just acting but Oh g-d they cannot confess that.#they're just work colleagues...!! and then there's an ''i love you'' scene and it's all #this is getting too long. bye
