Marwan Allam — Bab Bhar (self-released)

Bab Bhar is the threshold between the ancient medina and modern part of Tunis. The phrase serves as an apt metaphor for the work of New York based, Tunisian born bassist and composer Marwan Allam. On his self-released debut, he combines Arabic, North African and Andalusian forms with modern jazz to create a synthesis which sets the musical languages of the traditional within the framework of the new. With drummer Samvel Sarkisyan, pianist Chris McCarthy and saxophonist Yacine Boulares, the quartet incorporates Tunisian melodies and rhythmic patterns music and experiments with new approaches to the bass. Allam goes for melody and rhythm rather than speed and volume and the result is both meditative and richly complex.

Boulares’ tone recalls Paul Desmond which suits the voicings Allam writes for him. The timbral quality disguises the subtlety of his playing and the skill with which he incorporates intricate time changes without losing sight on melody. On soprano during “Ajmeya” and “Sammi Buleria” Boulares plays sinuous lines full of mysterious allusion while Sarkisyan skips nimble at his kit, shifting rhythms behind McCarthy’s recognizably post-bop phrasing. Allam is a constant presence flickering between jazz phrasing and the rhythms of his land. Working with alternative tunings based on the North African three stringed bass lute known as variously as the Gombri, Guembri or Sintir, Allam’s arco solo piece “Istikhbar Isbaain” is the centerpiece of Bab Bhar. A deeply sonorous and tactile evocation of sub-Saharan Gnawa music which was bought to the notice of many in the West by Brion Gysin and Brian Jones’ championing of the Master Musicians of Jajouka. Here Allam condenses the ritual fervor of MMJ into a plangent spiritual. On the straight-ahead workout “Orange Cake”, the quartet demonstrate their pure jazz chops. Allam remains in background, his warm bass tones providing a platform for his bandmates. Sarkisyan rolls around his kit, the cymbals more foregrounded than previously. On tenor Boulares returns to Western modalities, unfurling lithe runs and using harmonics to deepen his tone. McCarthy shines both as accompanist and during a lengthy solo, his interplay with Boulares a highlight.

Allam’s synthesis of musical traditions is grounded in syncretic similarities and his incorporation of Arabic and Andalusian tunings, rhythms and melodies into a jazz framework results in a frictionless fusion in which each element sounds and feels organic. Bab Bhar is never less than enchanting and Allam’s bow work is particularly resonant.
