I would like to thank Nimona for not only giving me some A+++ characters to hyperfixate on, but also for introducing this Rabindra Sangeet and Bollywood loving desi girl to some banger albums from the West

Ok so I love the shark dance scene as much as anybody. Loved it enough to track down the song and add it to my current playlists. Then I listened to it and went "wait, hang on a minute--"
Yes, it's about the other kind of *getting off* but that's not what drew my attention. Metric's "Gold Guns Girls" is a bit different than the other music used in Nimona in that it's more...melancholic. Which is part of why I vibe with it but that's beside the point. Just--tonally, for something Nimona and Ballister thought was a victory, that's an interesting song choice.
Then I looked at the lyrics more closely because I was curious. The ones that stuck out to me:
I remember when we were gambling to win / Everyone else said "better luck next time" / I don't wanna bend like the bad girls bend / I just wanna be your friend, is it ever gonna be enough?
With "is it ever gonna be enough" as the song refrain and back up vocals repeating "get off, get off, get off."
Very interesting. Important question: is the song about the director? Or is it about Ballister? About Nimona? Because it can actually be read either way, and those specific lyrics are definitely more reflective of the situation our protagonists are in. Because the director does get off--and Ballister doesn't have his name cleared. Nimona DEFINITELY doesn't, even after everything she's gone through. Is it ever gonna be enough?
Very cool that this song can be seen as tearing into the director on first viewing, and foreshadowing everything falling apart in later viewings, A+ music choice.
