hurtling into stardust (pt 2)
DigiOTPWeek Day 4: Sci-fi AU
Word Count: 893
Pairing: Ishida Yamato/Takenouchi Sora
Translations are included at the end of the fic.
In stark contrast to the day’s excitement – if you could call a drawn-out fire fight against Ichijouji’s mercenaries ‘excitement’ – the night was calm to the point of peacefulness. After she showered away the bloody grime and applied fresh bandages to her arm wound, Sora changed into fresh clothing and padded barefoot to the cockpit. “We’re good?” she asked, leaning against Yamato pilot’s chair to scan the proximity sensors.
“I shook them off a couple of parsecs back. Don’t worry.”
She smiled. “I’m not. I’m flying with the best pilot this side of the galaxy, after all.” She rested her hand on his shoulder briefly. “Come on. Turn on the AI so we can eat.”
By this point in their journey, the acrimonious beginning of their partnership was… not quite a distant memory, but certainly no longer a point of contention between them. It was hard to stay polite acquaintances when in a space ship with only two people and a thousand light years to travel. As the days went on, Sora and Yamato learned how to live around each other. Now she knew how long he slept and how often he spent the night pacing instead of sleeping at all. She figured out that he liked to play on his harmonica when he was homesick and that he preferred to cook when he was mad. When she sat in the cockpit with him, cleaning her blaster, he would tell her stories about the planets they traveled past.
Without realizing it, Sora had accumulated all these little details about Yamato until it began to feel like they really did know each other. Like they were really partners, and had been all along.
For all that it felt strange, it also felt… right.
They sat side by side on the floor of the cockpit so that they could watch the stars while they ate their dinner. After, she asked him about Takeru.
“You have no idea how many times I’d cook breakfast in the morning, turn around, and find some new girl in the apartment joining us for breakfast, introducing herself as Takeru’s friend.” Yamato shook his head in mock-exasperation, even as he smiled indulgently. “And don’t ask me for their names either, I never remember.”
“He doesn’t seem like the play boy type,” said Sora thoughtfully. “You know, with sleazy pickup lines and stuff. How does he get girls?”
“By being genuinely sweet. He’s so earnest that no one can be rude or think meanly of him, even if he uses a cheesy line,” he informed her. “Combined with his secret weapon…”
“He has a secret weapon? Are you kidding?”
“Look at me – do I look like I’m joking?”
“Oh my god. Okay, I’ll bite. What’s the secret weapon?”
“…He says everything in French.”
She smothered her laugh with her hand. “Oh no. No wonder.”
“I know.”
Sora shook her head. “That’s so unfair. How’s a girl supposed to resist the power of a cheesy French pick-up line?”
“Like I said, his game is unparalleled.”
“Do you know what lines he actually uses?” She wanted to know. “How bad are they?”
Yamato considered them. “They’re not bad per se. I mean, a direct translation would sound cheesy, definitely. That’s why he uses them – it makes the girls laugh when he tell them what it means. But in French, they’re actually charming.”
She nudged him with her foot. “Now you’re just stoking my curiosity.”
He chuckled and then cast his mind for a memory. “There's... Je vous trouve absolument charmante.”
It sounded melodic, somehow, in his baritone voice. Sora had a stray thought that his singing voice was probably pleasant to listen to. “What does that mean?”
“‘I find you absolutely charming.’ Or ‘beautiful.’”
“That doesn’t sound too cheesy.”
Yamato raised his eyebrow. “Even if it was the first thing a guy ever says to you?”
He… had a point there. “What’s another one?” she asked, reaching for her glass.
“Excuse-moi, j'ai perdu mon numero de téléphone. Est-ce que je peux t'emprunter le tien?” He started laughing. “‘Excuse me, I seem to have lost my phone number. Could I borrow yours? ’”
Sora nearly choked on her water. “No!”
“Vous venez souvent ici? ‘Do you come here often?’ A classic.”
“He’s shameless,” she marveled.
“That’s not even the worst one.”
She put down her glass. “Okay, I’m ready.”
Yamato smirked at her and then leaned in slightly. He raised his hand to her face; his thumb traced the corner of her mouth. “T’as une miette….”
How did she never notice before how blue his eyes were?
He drew his hand back, his smirk softening into a grin. “It means ‘you’ve got a crumb.’ Then he follows up that hand with a kiss. Pretty bad, huh.”
Sora managed a smile back, but her heart had started pounding in her chest without permission. “I… don’t know if ‘bad’ is the word I would use. ‘Effective’, maybe. It definitely works.” Then she realized what she said and started feeling warm.
They both noticed then how close they had gotten. Yamato watched her silently for a few moments – enough to notice her stupid blushing, probably even to hear her racing heart – and Sora watched as a mirroring flush started spreading across his face.
“Yamato – ”
“Sora.” He looked at her intensely. “J’ai envie de t’embrasser.”
She kissed him.
French to English:
J’ai envie de t’embrasser: I’d like to kiss you
