TikTok and LinkedIn under one roof?

“Microsoft is in talks to acquire TikTok, the Chinese-owned video app, according to a person with knowledge of the discussions, as President Trump said on Friday that he was considering taking steps that would effectively ban the app from the United States,” The New York Times reported Friday.

The company is in talks with the White House and reportedly negotiating to take over TikTok’s operations in US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Why we care. Despite its best efforts (see below), TikTok’s attempts to convince U.S. legislators that it operates wholly independently from its Chinese parent company ByteDance haven’t stuck. It’s options increasingly look limited to spinning off to go public or spinning off for acquisition. It’s looking like TikTok may be headed down the latter route.

Microsoft, with it’s focus on the enterprise, might seem like an odd fit for TikTok. But remember it’s also the home of Xbox, The Verge points out in a look at why Microsoft is interested in TikTok. (Microsoft is also about the only would-be big tech buyer not facing antitrust scrutiny in the U.S.)

A U.S. roof would allow TikTok to stay focused on building its creator ranks and fast-growing ad business with one less giant distraction — and help reassure users and advertisers that their data isn’t being siphoned off to China. Like LInkedIn, Microsoft could allow TikTok to run independently while taking advantage of data insights and integrations where it makes sense.

TikTok has received even more scrutiny than other tech giants “due to the company’s Chinese origins,” TikTok’s recently-appointed U.S.-based CEO Kevin Mayer wrote in a blog post this week as the CEOs of Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google were called to testify in an antitrust hearing.

In an effort to give users and regulators “peace of mind,” said Meyer, TikTok has launched a Transparency and Accountability Center in which experts can observe TikTok’s moderation policies “in real-time” and “examine the actual code that drives our algorithms.”

Meyer also called out Facebook for “launching another copycat product, Reels” on Instagram and made the case that TikTok offers American advertisers choice in the market.

The company announced a $200 million fund for American creators on the platform, with plans to grow it to more than $1 billion in the U.S. and more than $2 billion globally in the next three years to help it compete for talent against YouTube and Instagram.

Why we care. Even as its popularity swells, regulatory scrutiny and action could scare away advertisers and critically harm TikTok’s nascent advertising business. Meyer’s overture of transparency does not appear to have swayed legislators. In a bipartisan move Thursday, two U.S. senators asked the Justice Department to investigate Chinese-owned TikTok (as well as Zoom) over reports it has shared user data with China, a charge TikTok denies. Further, while TikTok should be applauded for exposing its algorithm, its competitors are likely to scoff at its suggestion that “all companies should disclose their algorithms, moderation policies, and data flows to regulators.”

Panel chair David Cicilline of Rhode Island raised concerns that Google “steals content” and uses its ability to surveil vast amounts of data to “identify competitive threats and crush them.” Pichai, again predictably, disputed the claims and said it uses data to improve results.

Jeff Bezos was peppered with a surprising number of questions about its marketplace. Bezos said Amazon does have policies preventing internal access to third-party seller data for its own private label brands, but couldn’t say it hadn’t violated those policies. Reps. Pramila Jayapal, Mary Gay Scanlon, Jaimie Raskin and Ken Buck were among those who pressed Bezos on its use of third-party data to inform and market its own proprietary products and brands.

Val Demings of Florida pressed Pichai on Google’s decision to combine data from web traffic and Google’s properties in 2016 after saying it would not do so when it acquired DoubleClick in 2007. Pichai said users can turn ads personalization on and off and have made it easy to control their data.

Zuckerberg said the environment has become even more competitive for Facebook since 2012.

Why we care. The pandemic has wreaked havoc on small businesses while at at the same time accelerated consumers’ shift to digital and the business need for digital transformation. The social networking giant sees big opportunity in becoming India’s digital tether between SMBs and consumers.

Google is also investing heavily in Jio Platforms (to the tune of $4.5 billion). The companies are partnering on an Android-based operating system for new Jio mobile devices with the aim of getting millions of more Indians online: a massive new market for ads and apps.

The word phishing is a combination of the words fishing (self-explanatory) and phreak (a term used to describe early hackers who manipulated the tone-based telephone switching systems to conduct unauthorized activity within the system).

Phishing is defined as is, “the fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be a trustworthy entity in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers.”

Phishing is one of the most common forms of social engineering used by hackers as, although it is not very effective on an individual basis, it is easy for hackers to send out hundreds or even thousands of emails, where they are likely to have some success. Furthermore these hackers will often cater their phishing attempts towards a specific group or company which is often more effective.

Types of Phishing:

- Spear phishing: a phishing attempt specially catered at a specific individual or group.

- Whaling: a spear phishing attack directed specifically at higher-ups or high profile targets.

- Clone phishing: a phishing attack where a hacker will emulate a legitimate email that the victim has received in the past.

Phishing Techniques:

- Link manipulation: most phishing attacks use a link designed to look legitimate when it actually leads to the hackers phony website. For example https://www.comnbank.com.au/ instead of the legitimate https://www.commbank.com.au/, which at a glance for many users would look normal.

- Filter evasion: to combat the spam filters most email providers have in place, hackers will use images to make the phishing attack harder to detect.

- Website forgery: Attackers use flaws in a trusted website’s own scripts. These types of attacks (known as cross-site scripting) for example, direct the user to sign in at their bank or service's own web page, where everything from the web address to the security certificates appears correct, making them particularly effective but harder to execute.

- Covert redirect: an example from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phishing, “suppose a victim clicks a malicious phishing link beginning with Facebook. A popup window from Facebook will ask whether the victim would like to authorize the app. If the victim chooses to authorize the app, a "token" will be sent to the attacker and the victim's personal sensitive information could be exposed.“

- Social engineering: hackers can target the emotions of a victim to make them act brashly. For example, a phishing email may tell the victim they have spent X amount of money, triggering an emotional response and making them more likely to quickly click the phishing link instead of thinking.

Many companies conduct staff training to try and avoid their staff being phished as many business’s are targeted by spear phishing type attacks.

Furthermore, most companies will say, for example “We will never ask you for your password” to try and prevent their customers being the victims of phishing attacks.

Law enforcement agencies increasingly care about phishing and will often notify the public if a particularly effective phishing attack is occurring. For example:

- augmented password logins (e.g. a user may choose an image when they make their account that will always show up when they are required to enter their password)

Operation Phish Phry - Hundreds of bank and credit card customers received official-looking emails directing them towards fake financial websites. Victims entered their account numbers and passwords into fraudulent forms, giving the attackers easy access to their private data. Amount stolen totals around $1.5 million.

Walter Stephan - Cybercriminals faked Walter Stephan’s (an Austrian aerospace executive) email and demanded a lower-level employee to transfer $47 million to an unknown bank account as part of an “acquisition project”.FACC’s systems were not hacked. The attacker seems to have simply guessed Stephan’s email correctly, created a look-alike spoof email address, and then targeted an entry-level accountant.

The Target/FMS Scam - In 2013 a data breach at Target affected 110 million users, including 41 million retail card accounts. Cybercriminals did not attack Target directly, they targeted a third-party HVAC vendor named Fazio Mechanical Services (FMS), which had rusted access to Target’s servers. Upon compromising FMS’s servers, they were easily able to access Target’s as well.

The Ukrainian Power Grid Attack - Malicious firmware was designed specifically to destroy physical machinery. The malicious firmware attack used email phishing as its originating attack vector.

The Moscow World Cup Vacation Rental Scam - Email phishing scammers sent innumerable emails promising vacation rentals, free tickets, and more to World Cup fans. Rather than being a single organization perpetrating the attack, many opportunists around the world created phishing emails to try and scam consumers. In some of these attacks, very convincing phishing messages using real data were used without any system being breached.

In these examples, we see a variety of phishing tactics used by hackers to commit cyber attacks successfully.

Spam

According, to https://mashable.com/2012/11/27/email-stats-infographic/, in 2013 65% (94.12 billion emails) of all emails sent were spam. Spam emails are normally a mild nuisance, however they are also the main carrier for phishing attacks and dangerous malware/viruses.

The Legality of Spam:

In Australia, the Spam Act 2003 covers our rules on spam.

The rules apply to messages sent to an electronic address, like a mobile number or email address, which contain a commercial element. As my emails will not have any commercial element I do not need to particularly worry about breaking the law.

However, under the spam rules, you cannot use a (email) list that has been created using address-harvesting software.

This means, I will either need to acquire a large number of emails by asking people or will need to find a list of emails that have been created without using address-harvesting software.

Spam I Receive

I have four email addresses that I still use, 2 on Gmail, 1 on Hotmail, and my uni email.

On my lesser-used Gmail address that I mainly use for accounts I created years ago, before I moved to a more professional email, my spam list is full of YouTube notifications.

On my current Gmail address, I only have 3 spam emails in my inbox (they get deleted after 30 days of sitting there) and they are all from legitimate sources that I have entered my email into willingly.

On my uni email my spam folder is empty :(.

My Hotmail address is my only email with actual spam, among many other legitimate emails.

Evidently, none of these spam emails are very effective as the hacker has adopted a quantity over quality approach, automating a large number of the same email, instead of “spear phishing”. Furthermore, legitimate emails from companies often contain some form of picture relating to the company and will not include a file like in the 2nd email, highlighting the ineffective phishing attack by the hacker.

How do spam filters work?

Good spam filters often use a combination of the following types of spam filtering:

Content filters – review the content of an email

Header filters – review the email header in search of falsified information

General blacklist filters – stop all emails that come from a blacklisted file of known spammers

Rules-based filters – use user-defined criteria – such as specific senders or specific wording in the subject line or body – to block spam

Permission filters – require anyone sending a message to be pre-approved by the recipient

Challenge-response filters – require anyone sending a message to enter a code in order to gain permission to send email
