18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas: Dev Pragad - The "Turnaround Man" Behind Newsweek's Digital Success
At the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Youth Conclave, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made a notable departure from tradition by selecting a guest of honor from the business and media world rather than the political arena. The spotlight was on Dev Pragad, a Coimbatore-born media mogul known for his transformative leadership. As the CEO of the iconic American magazine Newsweek, Pragad has earned the title of the "Turnaround Man" and is credited with saving the once-dying brand.
Tumblr media
From "Newsweek is Dead" to Digital Revival: Dev Pragad's Journey Pragad's rise to prominence in the business and media world is nothing short of remarkable. In 2013, Newsweek was on the brink of collapse, with many declaring the brand's demise. By 2016, Pragad joined the magazine, and by 2018, he had taken the helm, steering it towards a successful digital transformation. By 2024, Variety magazine hailed Newsweek's resurgence as "the Unlikeliest Digital Success Story," solidifying Pragad's legacy as a media visionary.
The Secret to Success: Key Lessons for Indian Digital Media Houses Pragad's turnaround strategy for Newsweek offers valuable insights for Indian digital media houses aiming to navigate the evolving media landscape. Key practices include:
Brand Revitalization: Pragad’s first step was to rebuild the Newsweek brand after years of financial mismanagement and a shift toward celebrity-focused content. His focus on restoring credibility and relevance made a massive impact on the magazine's revival.
Data-Driven Journalism: Pragad emphasized the importance of data in shaping editorial decisions. Journalists at Newsweek were trained to understand which stories resonated with audiences across major digital platforms like Google, Facebook, and Apple News, ensuring content remained engaging and relevant.
Strategic Partnerships: Collaborating with leading tech companies like Google, Engine Media, and Statista, Pragad leveraged tools like AI-powered recommendation engines to enhance user experience. He also adopted the OKR (Objectives and Key Results) framework, pioneered by Google, to set clear goals and measure progress.
Multimedia Integration: Understanding the importance of diverse content formats, Pragad integrated videos, podcasts, and interactive graphics into Newsweek’s digital strategy, making it more accessible and engaging for a wider audience.
Commitment to High Journalism Standards: Despite the digital shift, Pragad remained committed to Newsweek’s core principles of investigative journalism and in-depth reporting on global issues. This dedication helped maintain the publication’s credibility while appealing to a growing digital audience.
Pragmatic Lessons for Indian Digital Media Houses As Indian media houses work toward global expansion and digital transformation, Pragad's strategies offer key takeaways:
Brand Focus: Strengthening brand identity and credibility is critical in an era of information overload. Data-Driven Decision Making: Understanding audience preferences through data ensures content relevance and reader engagement. Innovation and Partnerships: Collaborating with tech giants and embracing new technologies is essential for staying competitive in the digital space. Multimedia Storytelling: Expanding content formats beyond traditional text ensures broader audience engagement. Quality Journalism: Staying true to the fundamentals of high-quality, in-depth reporting will continue to attract loyal readers. Pragad’s journey from Newsweek’s brink of collapse to becoming a leading digital success story is a testament to his visionary leadership. His approach is a blueprint for Indian digital media companies seeking to thrive in the rapidly changing media environment and play a crucial role in India’s "Viksit Bharat" vision by 2047.
Dev Pragad's Vision for the Future In his address at the 18th PBD, Pragad shared insights into his journey and the broader role of Indian expatriates in shaping global industries. As the minister of Youth and Skill Development, Mansukh Mandaviya, emphasized, the PBD conclave is an essential platform for exchanging best practices and implementing them in India to build a prosperous future.
Pragad’s success story continues to inspire young Indians, showing them that with the right vision, resilience, and innovation, they can contribute significantly to both global industries and India’s growing influence on the world stage.

18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas: Dev Pragad, The Turnaround Man Who Revived the American Dream – Key Lessons for Indian Digital Media Houses
Tumblr media
At the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Youth Conclave, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made a significant shift from tradition by selecting a media and business leader as the guest of honor instead of a political figure. This departure was perfectly justified, as the guest of honor was none other than Dev Pragad, the "Turnaround Man" credited with saving Newsweek – a major U.S. magazine – from the brink of closure.
Born in Coimbatore, India, Pragad's career has become a remarkable success story. Dev Pragad, the CEO of Newsweek, has been hailed as the man who revived the magazine after its decline, transforming it into a digital success story. His leadership was instrumental in bringing Newsweek back from the brink of collapse, and today, the magazine is thriving in the digital world.
The Turning Point: Newsweek’s Revival Journey
In 2013, Newsweek was considered on its deathbed, with many predicting its closure. Fast forward to 2016, and Dev Pragad joined the company at a time when it was grappling with financial instability, management issues, and a loss of relevance in the digital age. By 2018, Pragad took the helm of Newsweek and started working on its revival strategy.
By 2024, Newsweek was celebrated as one of the most unlikely digital success stories, as highlighted by Variety. The publication has transformed from a struggling print magazine to a dynamic digital platform. The journey from "Newsweek is dead" to "Newsweek is digital success" is a testament to Pragad's visionary leadership.
The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and the Importance of Recognizing Digital Media Leadership
At the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) summit in Odisha, Pragad’s success story served as an inspiration to the Indian diaspora and youth. Minister Mansukh Mandaviya emphasized that PBD’s purpose is to bring the best practices from host countries and apply them to India’s development goals for 2047. Pragad’s journey exemplifies the impact of innovation and leadership, offering valuable lessons for Indian digital media houses.
Dev Pragad’s Approach to Reviving Newsweek: Key Lessons for Digital Media Houses
Pragad shared his insights on how he turned Newsweek’s fortunes around. One of the first steps was rebuilding the Newsweek brand, which had suffered due to management missteps, financial irregularities, and a shift from hard-hitting news to celebrity gossip.
Brand Reinvention: The first critical lesson was to rebuild the brand from the ground up. Newsweek’s brand had taken a severe beating, but Pragad saw this as an exciting challenge, focusing on restoring the publication's core identity.
Data-Driven Journalism: Pragad emphasized the importance of data in decision-making. Journalists were educated on the fact that even great stories are not valuable unless they reach an audience. Editorial decisions were driven by data, helping Newsweek tailor its content to digital platforms like Google, Facebook, and Apple News.
Strategic Partnerships: Partnerships played a key role in Newsweek’s turnaround. Collaborations with industry giants like Google, Engine Media, and Statista were crucial. Google Cloud helped develop a cutting-edge AI recommendation engine, which significantly improved content delivery.
Multimedia Integration: The integration of videos, podcasts, and interactive graphics into Newsweek's content strategy enhanced engagement and provided readers with diverse ways to consume news.
Commitment to Journalism: Despite the focus on digital growth, Pragad maintained Newsweek’s commitment to high-quality journalism. The publication’s focus on investigative reporting and in-depth analysis of global issues helped it regain its credibility in the media landscape.
Conclusion: Applying Pragad’s Lessons to Indian Digital Media Houses
Dev Pragad’s story is not only an inspiration to the global media industry but also offers valuable lessons for Indian digital media houses. In an age where content consumption is shifting to digital platforms, Indian media houses can learn from Pragad’s data-driven approach, strategic partnerships, and commitment to maintaining journalistic integrity.
As Pragad continues to lead Newsweek into its next phase of digital success, his story serves as a beacon for the future of media, both in the U.S. and India. For Indian media houses looking to thrive in a rapidly changing digital landscape, the key lies in reinventing their brands, leveraging data, and maintaining a strong focus on quality journalism.

Considering leaving your job to start a business? Karnataka will provide Rs 25,000 per month, says Priyank Kharge
Tumblr media
The Karnataka government is offering a one-year subsidy of Rs 25,000 per month to those who have quit their jobs to follow their entrepreneurial dreams.
At the Startup Conclave in Bengaluru on August 9, Karnataka IT-BT Minister Priyank Kharge announced, “We are about to launch a unique entrepreneurship program, potentially the first of its kind in the country. If someone leaves their job to become an entrepreneur, we will provide a stipend of Rs 25,000 per month for a year. While this amount may seem modest given the high inflation, it will at least cover domestic expenses.
Kharge referred to the Karnataka government’s Elevate program as “the most-loved scheme for startups.” in order to emphasize its achievements.
“Startups registered with the Karnataka government that have participated in and won the Elevate program will find the Karnataka government as their initial customer,” said Kharge.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah launched the Rajiv Gandhi Entrepreneurship Programme (RGEP) in the budget for 2024–2025 for aspiring young inventors and entrepreneurs. The IT-BT department claims that young entrepreneurs with a background in science or engineering are the target audience for RGEP. For a duration of 12 months, they would earn a monthly stipend of Rs 25,000 in addition to mentorship from K-tech innovation hubs.
According to Kharge, a lot of business owners from other states have also registered their companies in Karnataka in order to participate in this encouraging ecosystem. “Bengaluru did not emerge as the fourth-largest technological center in the world by accident. We changed throughout time, going from being mainly a center for back office functions and IT-enabled services to becoming a pioneer in R&D. This development has spurred important discoveries and technologies. Karnataka leads the state in service exports and is ranked first in the Innovation Index, according to Kharge.
The minister announced plans to develop sector-specific corridors for startups, including an AI corridor linking San Francisco with Bengaluru. “We have also launched the Global Innovation Alliance with 32 countries, creating dedicated corridors for startups registered with the Karnataka government to facilitate their market access internationally. For example, Bengaluru-based startups have already established operations in Germany, Australia, and Belgium. No other state government is taking such risks for startups. We are actively pursuing this, and, more importantly, we offer substantial opportunities,” said Kharge.Read More-https://24x7newsroom.com/

BJP MLA Ameet Satam spoke of developmental plans at India Leadership Conclave
With the evolving issues of farmers, the government came up with ‘Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyan’ to resolve the issues of water in the farming sector. A total of 5000 Cr is sanctioned for irrigating 12 lakh hector of land in just a span of 4 years.
Ameet Satam profusely credits the honesty, transparency and good governance of his party for everything they have achieved in their tenure. His party is responsible for the transformation of 61% of MOUs into reality bringing into net different aspects like Textile park at Amravati and Agro-Processing unit in Hingoli. These projects are on the verge of setting themselves off and are going to take off soon.
Moving on to India’s ease of doing business and Global Innovation, Maharashtra contributes about 60% of the total business in the country. Mumbai homes many big businesses and organizations which play a crucial role in this huge contribution to the country. India has moved from its ranking on Ease at doing business and global innovation from 170th position to 72 and this took place in a span of 5 years.
Ameet Satam then shared a small incident of proud that our CM Devendra Fednavis faced in his visit to the USA. He saw a demo model of Hyperloop there and people were amazed by this kind of invention. When the whole project is over and Hyperloop is set to run the tracks, the commute time from Mumbai to Pune will drop down to a whopping 20 mins.
He came to the end of his speech by talking about Artificial Intelligence and how is it going to change our lives forever. Artificial Intelligence has found its space in the agricultural sector and agro-processing Units. The government is making every effort to bring AI into every walk of our life to save the time of the citizens so that they can utilize their time doing something productive and contributing to the country.
With a humble thanks to all the audience, Ameet Satam moved on to receive felicitation. In the middle of a thundering applaud, He walked out of the stage.
