The pair emerged from the hall into a much wider space, looking like at one time it was a bustling courtyard, full of hope and civilians of all shapes and sizes, the eager giggles of children and loving looks of couples, but now, was stained with blood and cracked, just as everything else. The girl happily skipped along towards the fountain in the very center, skipping right past a charred corpse and scattered bullet shells, likely from an old fight the previous day.

She climbed into the fountain and began to 'splash' about; the fountain was long since empty, but to a Sister's sight, it was in perfect condition, so she splashed about in the nonexistent water regardless, giggling and swaying her arms from side to side, still holding the needle tightly in one hand. Thankfully, the courtyard was clear of locals this morning, likely because they'd heard the lumbering sounds of a Big Daddy nearby; or they were so hopped up on ADAM they were all still asleep.

The Big Daddy simply stood near the fountain, keeping a close eye on her; beyond their Sister's, Big Daddy's held no other thoughts. He remembered nothing of his farmhouse, of his father, not even of the man he'd traveled down to this city with. None of that mattered now, all that mattered was being a father to his daughter. Nothing. Else.

After a bit of playing, lumbering from the heights of a nearby staircase signaled the arrival of a second Big Daddy, that gradually came into view as the steps creaked under him heavily. It was a different model of Big Daddy, dubbed a Bouncer, short and round in stature, upon one of its arms a large, blood-stained drill, and clutched protectively in the other was another Little Sister.

This Sister was clad in a pink, frilly dress, with ruffles at the bottom and at her sleeves, with a poofy mass of brown hair upon her head that hung over her shoulders, and the same corpse grey skin and glowing yellow eyes as the others - though her grey was a bit darker in tone, and her yellow eyes were wide all by themselves, without the need for magnification, peering out at the word with the inquisitive nature of an owl.

The Sister smiled brightly at the other pair, the girl in the fountain stopping in her splashing to look towards her and return the smile. "Can we play too?" The Sister clad in pink questioned eagerly, to which the Sister in green quickly nodded. "Yeah! Come on!" The Sister in pink squeaked excitedly, her Daddy gently letting her down, retrieving some crayons and paper from a small bag she'd attached around her Daddy's waist before rushing down the stairs with many a giggle.

From there the pair of Sister's spent most of the early morning sat in the fountain, doodling with their crayons and talking back and forth, their father's standing nearby in silence, simply watching, not even acknowledging each other. But that didn't matter.

All that mattered was that the Sister's were happy.

There's a lot Adrian could stand to focus on right now, and probably will, once they're safely back on the ship.

But for now, as she and Thane sit tucked away into what passes for the quietest, darkest corner in Afterlife - she thinks, this is nice. Yes, she feels remarkably like she's been run over by a tank, and she's only just halfway done with a glass of ice water (anything more than slow, distanced sips, and her stomach hitches), and she's waiting here because she's more likely to pass out on the walk back to the Normandy where Mordin's preparing something or another to help -

But the music's good, and the water is safe - And. Well. Not that Adrian had put much thought into it, before now - but Thane's hands are softer than she'd expected them to be, and if he minds the occasional brush of her thumb where his fingers rest over hers, it's not enough to provoke any sort of reaction, at least.

She's not sure who reached out first, really. One moment, she was just focused on keeping herself upright and not choking on her drink, the next -

Well, the actual next moment, there'd been a shock, but that was to be expected between biotics (even if hers still weren't functioning properly); but - there's probably better ways she can put it, but one moment had been aimless and cold, the next… the next was warm. His hand over hers, and for perhaps the first time since waking up - if not further back - it's not so disorienting to be reminded that she has a body. Perhaps, at worst, a little… embarrassing, right now.

Bad enough to be poisoned, briefly senseless and puking on his shoes, but for it to come on the heels of breaking a decade-long silence that could ruin her reputation, could ruin the Alliance's standing - she wouldn't have judged Thane for leaving her in someone else's care, not in the slightest. Instead, he caught her when she fell. Sits across from her now, holding her hand. It could be.. practically minded? To keep watch, and at the same time, monitor if she loses consciousness again?

Adrian wants to catch his eye, to get some glimpse, some clue of what the motivation here is (or she could do the intelligent thing, and ask, but her heart seems to have traded places with her vocal cords at the moment), if it's some weird practical measure or if it's a matter of comfort - and if so, for her sake? Or - Is it so ridiculous to wonder, if it's for his?

She can't quite gather up that much courage. But she does find enough to shift her arm, to lightly lace her fingers with his (or so much as one can do when fused digits are involved), and she can't help but smile at the light, unmistakable squeeze she receives in turn. They're dead men walking, the both of them - but maybe it would be nicer, walking to the end hand in hand with somebody else.

Day 5: Choice

The Abyss shivered within, for Isiri was the Abyss and the Abyss was she. But the mind was tricky, for such beings were not made to think, at least not in the same ways that follow the limitations of neurons or brain cells. Memories of her life prior to awakening often conflated or contradicted with the things before her eyes. Cultures mixed and fused, but one thing remained clear: purpose.

The natural order of things was the ideal. Such details were a constant shifting pool of murk, secrets, and darkness, as was the nature of the Abyss. But the constant remained: it was the purpose for its existence, in this form or any other. However, the will of nature was that at times, those in nature called for it. And so here she came, though at the time she didn’t know it. But now she did, Awake and getting used to being able to exert her control over darkness and the sea, for they were her. Yet here she was; a fish and an entity who was summoned, through what methods were not quite yet known to her, to the presence of a people she never knew before yet always knew. So far from Earth and home, and yet still so bonded, woven within a tapestry of sea water, space, time, and Glass.

Isiri lowered her head watching from her tank in the Marine Biology Lab. The scientists rushed around, always busy, but at this moment even more so as the Captain had graced the halls with their presence. The energy had changed palpably, as each tried to show the best of their work to their leader. The mermaid continued her observation, not paying much attention to any of the words exchanged between the humans. In truth, the mermaid was uncharacteristically silent. No song burbled from her lips and gills, not a light from her bioluminescence sparkled across her scales. The Abyss was strong, dark and silent, working despite the stillness within this confined water.

Darkness knew darkness, this much was a universal truth. And in the eyes of the Abyss, Captain Tara resonated with itself. Pain, suffering, and perseverance were all there, as were pride, creation, and most importantly, hope. Hope for less suffering. Hope for true freedom. Hope for those who came after to not have to deal with the limitations of the present. Though she had already done so much, there was much more work to be done. The Captain was at a turning point, as was Isiri. There were many questions that remained. Extinction was the course of nature, but the Abyss had picked at Earth for so long. It couldn’t let go, not just yet. But was it right? Would direct action break the previously expended slight tweaks and suggestions made in the past? Isiri didn’t know. But she did know that the Captain was one of the reasons she was here, if not THE reason. And with her lay the solution. The darkness therein, roiling with uncertainty and hope were evident in the Captain’s eyes. Eyes that were lingering a bit too long in the direction of Isiri’s tank. Isiri met their gaze, though there was little doubt the Captain’s eyes could see her response. But she would feel it.

Monday 22nd May

A busy day today. We have some sorting to do. Our friends Chris & Lesley are coming to stay with us and we need to clear our back cabin so the have somewhere to sleep.

Firstly I needed to fix the jammed anchor. It was actually easier than I thought. I replaced the very expensive 100amp fuse, then opened the anchor locker. The access is behind the mirror which serves as our headboard. A loop of rope had been pulled up into the windlass mechanism and was stuck fast. All that was required was a couple of short bursts on the windlass ‘raise’ button and the jammed loop dropped out. Job done.

I extracted the folding bike from the engine bay and cycled up to the supermarket. We needed some water.

When we washed down the boat yesterday we filled the tank, then a couple of 5 litre water bottles for drinking. We noticed it was a bit murky. In a glass you probably wouldn’t notice, but in a large container it was plain to see. Neither of us fancied drinking it.

The 5 litre containers are heavy to carry long distances, so I took the bike and at the supermarket strapped that, some small bottles of water and another box of wine to the flat bit behind the saddle and rode back to the marina.

There is a sill here too into the inner harbour, it’s strange that they don’t just dredge it out.

There’s also a lovely little beach next door to the marina, really close to where we are moored. I remembered swimming there when we were here in 2017.
