Chapter 2
Tumblr media
Ok so I know you read the beginning of this and wondering how in the hell did I get myself here. I'm twenty-three years old, with two degrees, a dream job at DDC House Design, the top interior design house on the east coast and I am officially 6 weeks pregnant. Well I am going to have to take you back to about 8 months ago when I stepped out on a dream and chased it all the way to New York City.
"Congratulations Sloane Taylor,
This letter is to thank you and to acknowledge of your offer of employment to join the staff of DDC House of Designs with an entry level salary of $176,000. We feel it would be out mutual advantage to advance our final decision. Will contact you via email to advise you of your employment packet.
Sincerely, DDC House Designs
"OOOOMMMMGGGGG, Mommy come her look! Omg look at this email!"
"What is it Sloane you are calling my name like you crazy."
""Look mom I got the designing job in New York?"
"Wow that’s great baby girl I'm so proud of you." My mother said with conviction,
I looked up at my mother that had a sweet and sour look on her face when she heard me say New York.
"Ok mom please don’t ruin this moment with that look ok New York is not that far away.
"I know honey but its far enough and you don’t have any family up there. "
See my mother in my eyes is being her usual over protective self at the mention of me going somewhere that isn't Greensboro, North Carolina. I've been here my entire life and I can't wait to leave. Nobody here has hope or dreams of anything outside of those city lines. Don’t get me wrong I love my hometown and I am proud of where I come from, but I want to see the world. I graduated college last year from North Carolina A&T with my Bachelors in Business and a Minor in Art since of course my mother would have had a heart attack if I would have gone out of state. Hell, I think she might have had a minor stroke if I went to East Carolina University, so I didn’t even test the limits. I am by far not a small-town girl but I hold my values. Most of the girls I graduated out of high school have kids now including my best friend Amina Walton who I have known since kindergarten. We met on the first day when she asked me to push her on the swing on the playground and now we have been inseparable ever since. She had her daughter Skylar our freshman year in college and I love her to the moon and back but I know for sure I am nowhere near ready to be a mom.
Mommy, I can take care of myself I am an adult and plus I have done everything you have ever asked of me. I stayed in Greensboro longer than I had planned on it. It is way past time for me to travel and leave."
"I understand Sloane, but what are you going to do it something goes wrong or you need something."
"then I will call home and ask. Mom you have to learn to let me go you are starting to smother me and I am an adult. I love you I really do but I am taking this job,"
I had to put on my firm voice but I know I was hurting her feelings by saying that. It has been me and my mom for years after my dad died and she couldn’t help but hold me close. I can't really blame her though she really stepped up and played both roles perfectly to win an Oscar.
"well what are they offering you to have you move so far?"
"they are paying my rent for my apartment, full benefit coverage, paid vacations and all holidays off. Come on mom, it is no way I am going to ever find a job like that here."
"ok ok Sloane. When do you have to leave after you accept the job?"
"Two-weeks..."
"two weeks! That is too soon how will you pack and get all of your things there in time?"
"they are sending movers mom, everything will be fine.
I was so excited I couldn’t contain myself while she was in my room. Once I finally got her to see things through my eyes she walked out my room. I closed the door and let out a silent scream. I count help it. It felt like such a weight was lifted off of my shoulders. I am leaving this place behind and not looking back.
Two weeks flew by I couldn’t believe my whole life was packed into 30 cardboard boxes and I was counting the hours to load them in a moving truck. I didn’t think I was going to be this sad to leave when I made the call and accepted the position. Amina through me a huge going away party last night and it seemed like the entire city came out to see me off. Including my ex Zayvion.
Tumblr media
We dated for 3 years and I learned everything I don’t deserve in a relationship. I know what you thinking and no he didn’t cheat on me but let's just say college can really change people. Everything was perfect in that honey moon phase but after he crossed and pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. Secrets pushed us apart and turned us against each other. I didn’t expect to see him there and I know Amina didn’t invite him so of course he heard through the grapevine that I was leaving. Everybody loved us together being that we were the "black Love Lives" couple of the century. I can't deny he was fine for sure 6"4, golden peanut butter skin, full pink lips and chocolate brown curls. With a smile that made me melt and eyes to steal my soul.  Who could turn him down? At one point I never thought I could. Not to mention his dick game was powerful I swear that’s how he pledged on line. Freshman and Sophomore year, I had a nice size four body, but Junior and Senior year I filled out in everything. My body couldn’t lie that he wasn’t putting it down before dorm curfew and the whole campus could see it.
He approached me with that suave walk and pearly white smile smashed across his face. I got a little weak at the knees as I watched him approach me from across the back yard. All my girls giggling behind me talking about "girl here he come" "mmm you sure you wanna leave that behind" "girl he so damn fine". I rolled my eyes at all of them, "look yall need to calm down and play it cool nobody is thinking about that boy." But on the inside my heart was racing. He walked up and said " what's up yall?" His voice rang in my ears so vibrant sending me to reminisce when he would whisper in my ear with my legs up on his shoulders and he hitting my spot just right. Damn I missed that feeling. My pussy started tingling and the thought of his hands rubbing down my thighs to spread my legs.
"Sloane you good? "
I snapped out my daydream, "yeah I'm good, what are you doing here?"
"I heard Kiwan talking about it and I was surprised that I didn’t get an invitation so I thought I would make a surprise appearance. "
"well I didn’t make the guest list so I hope your feelings weren't too hurt."
"A little bit, but it's nothing a hug can't fix though," he shrugged his shoulders and held his arms out and open for me.
It couldn't hurt just to hug him right? I contemplated at first then I just gave in and stepped in for the hug. His Prada cologne hit my nose and mesmerized me. His chest was thick and muscular. I could feel in his back where he had been hitting the gym and it was doing his justice.
Tumblr media
"awwww look at my favorite couple." I hear coming from behind him a familiar voice. Zayvion's best friend and line brother Kiwan. He was cool and about the only friend he had that I actually liked.
"shut up you are so annoying"
"don’t do me like that friend, you know im always going to team Sloane and Zay"
"Shut up bro " Zay laughed and nudged Kiwan. "you play too much"
"ok when yall stop frontin' let me know. Speaking of frontin whats up Amina you not gonna speak ? "
" Boy bye no im not speaking to you." Amina gave him the hand and walked off. Kiwan always had a thing for Amina since sophomore year and she tried everything to turn him away but I know on the low she had a little flutter for him. All it took was when she mentioned she had a daughter and he instantly got excited and said he would love to meet her one day. It definitely took Amina by surprise most guys take off at the mention of a kid but he held his own.
"Bro when are you just going to let that go man?" Zay always joked him for how Amina loved to give him the cold shoulder.
"Never bruh, you don’t understand we got a thing its just on the low."
We all burst out laughing and everything felt like old times. In that moment my heart felt a little heavy. Am I really going to leave all of this behind. My friends and family for the big city? I wanted to say im staying but I knew It was just in the moment and when I got there it would all fade away.
*Alarm rings
I woke up not realizing that I had fallen asleep in the middle of my day dreams. Today was the day. I reached over to turn off my alarm and my notification list was longer than usual. I scrolled down and saw Amina, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Daily Quotes and to my surprise Zayvion. My eye widened and I didnt even think he still had my number. I didn’t want to open his message to make it seem like I missed him or was pressed to see what he said so I just went to answer Amina. She said she was on her way to help me load the moving truck so I needed to get up and shower.
Im going over my check list to make sure I got everything to load up as I see her pull up in her red Volkswagen Jetta. I didn’t even have to turn around to know it was her because I could hear the 90s r&b playlist bumping from down the street. The car doors closed and I heard my little angel Skylar's voice call out for me " Auntie!" I dropped my notepad and swept her up in my arms for a huge hug. She has gotten so big so fast and I cant believe I am about to leave her. I have been there since day one and in the delivery room when she was born.
She hugged my neck so tight then pulled back and asked "auntie why is all of your stuff in that big truck where are you going?"
I wanted to lie and say no where without you but I couldn’t. "auntie is moving to new york remember for her big girl job." She just smiled back at me and said "well are you going to visit me and mommy because we are going to miss you."
"of course pumpkin and you and mommy are going to come visit me on the airplane right?"
"yes" she squealed. "good now go see meme she has cookies." I put her down on her feet and she took off running into the house. Amina walked up behind her and hugged me which is something she never does.
"what is wrong with you, im not dying" I said.
"what do you mean you are not dying?" She look confused at what I asked her.
"uhm you are hugging me like im dying tomorrow not moving away."
"well you might as well be! We have spent every day of our lives together since kindergarten, what am I going to do now that you have out grown this place?"
"well you know you can always move there too eventually, they need nurses in every state."
"yeah I know but I have Skylar and I don’t really want to take her from my mom."
"you cant limit your self because of other people Mina." I always wanted so much more for Amina. She had potential to be so much more than she allowed herself to step out of her comfort zone to be. We were similar but our differences made us great friends.
"girl are you sure you are ready to move like what is going to be the first thing you do when you get there?"
"shit find the nearest Junior's Cheesecake and walk the Brooklyn Bridge." We burst out laughing but I couldn’t be more serious.
"how did it feel seeing Zayvion last night? I had no idea he was going to show up even though the whole city was In that shit. We was lit for sure."
"yeah It was super awkward and intense at first and it felt like old times." Speaking of Zay I totally forgot he had texted me this morning. "He texted me this morning and I didn’t think he would remember my number."
"why wouldn’t he? Bestfriend now you know that boy still love you and he know he fucked up."
"to bad that was not my problem then and its not now. He shoudnt be trying to press me now its been a whole year since we broke up and he wants to wait until the day before I leave to reach out? No thank you ill pass." I rolled my eyes and went to grab some boxes. It was no need for me to text back now.
We loaded the truck in a matter of 2 hours and nothing was left but my suitcase and backpack for my flight in the morning. My mom had to work but she would be off intima to take me to the airport. Amina and Skylar stayed over for one of our famous living room sleepovers.
"You know your going to be ordering out every night when you get there because you cant cook?" She laughed trying to joke will she made all my sleepover favorites.
"shut up I can cook enough to survive! Plus that’s what restaurants are for to order out of."
"yeah but your going to miss this home cooking believe it or not because you know I can burn." Amina was the perfect wife and mom type. She had all the qualities not to mention she was beautiful. Milk cocoa brown skin, full curly natural hair that she passed on to Sky and she was 5"4 slim thick thick for sure.
"yeah I am, you spoil me bestie. Thanks for everything!" I smiled at her and she just smiled back because she wasn’t the sentimental type but I know a tear filled her eye on that one. She finished cooking and we turned on the black Cinderella with Brandy and Whitney Houston our favorite movie. Amina was sleep first as usual then sky and me. My mom came in and woke us up in time to get ready for me to catch my flight. We parked the car in the departure parking lot and they walked me to my gate. I hugged Amina and Sky trying to hold back tears. Then my mom who was wiping her eyes quickly so I wouldn’t see her crying.
"oh mommy its ok don’t cry. I am going to facetime you as soon as I land."
"I love you Sloane be safe ok?"
"I love you too mommy!"
*now boarding flight 5477 to New York City at Gate 4*
"that’s me guys! I will call as soon as I land." I picked up my bag and walked to my gate. Handing my ticket over to the flight attendant I took one last look back at them waving bye to me I waved back walked through the doors. I found my seat and adjusted myself for the take off. I had a window seat so I could see the airplane wing. I took a hug deep breath and settled my nerves. This was the start of a new beginning and the plane started rolling.

~♥ PRIVACY PLEASE ♥~
[So, here’s the dinner that was aforementioned. Here be Jordan, Carmen, Julian, Sophie, Mr. and Mrs. (Cat) Rivera, and Mr. and (probably the third) Mrs. (Meredith, snobby rich wife name) Harper. All sitting in that order. Yes indeedy.
The parents are chatting up a storm, and, as it appears, barely noticing the children, or anything that they might be doing here in this loud restaurant. However, it’s not as if they are missing much, because they seem to be at a stalemate down here on this side of the dinner table. Jordan right over here beside Carmen was exuding the most tangible aura of ‘get me out of here’ that she’d ever felt in her life. Which, yeah, made her want to roll her eyes, because, chill, boy. This wasn’t even a big deal. Meanwhile, Julian and Sophie seemed to be in a world all their own. So, nah, giant sigh from Carmen, because she wasn’t going to settle for being stuck with Mr. Wooden for all of dinner time. Time to employee operation ‘Be Her Best Friend’? Ya.]
So, Sophie, [The married kiddos break out of idk, not sentences, because Carmen would never be so rude as to interrupt in the middle of a sentence.] and Julian. [And that, clearly, causes Jordan to look up from his glass of water that he’d probably been staring at in major regret all this time.] For the sake of not going mad at the silence on my side of the table-- I know you’re both in school, correct? If you don’t mind my asking, what for~?
Tumblr media
[Sophie decides to answer this question, presumably because she was addressed first.] We’re both in law school.
Tumblr media
Law school! That’s nice. I’m actually going into Pre-Law this Fall. [Not a bluff, or a lie. She really is.]
Ah, I thought you seemed like you had your priorities in order. You got a school yet?
Tumblr media
Yeah. Stanford.
Stanford? [An eyebrow twitch/raise thing.] Good school. Isn’t that right, Jordan?
... S’great.
Tumblr media
[Call Carmen confused. So a confusion eyebrow-ified face. Like, what’s Jordan’s opinion matter.] Jordan’s going to Stanford this fall for Poli-Sci.
[Had Carmen been drinking water at that moment, it would have been all over the table. Because she would’ve choked on it. Jordan Harper? Same school as her? God hELP HER. She gives Jordan this look that seems to be quite cordial from an outsider perspective, but anybody under direct fire would see the flamES in her eyeballs.] Isn’t that something?
Tumblr media
How nice! You’ll have a friend already when you get there.
Tumblr media
Or someone friendly at the very least, huh, bro?
Tumblr media
Yes. Having a friend there will be great, Julian.
Tumblr media
[In the midst of that, there is a roar of ‘thoSE ACCOMMODATIONS SOUND HIDEOUS.’ from the parental end of the table, and that’s enough to distract everyone (including a confused Sophie) from that particular conversation. However, the North remembers, and by the North, I mean Carmen Rivera.
So, in she leans to Jordan, yanking him down to her level so she can whisper to him, because boi she needs some damn answers.] Stanford?
Tumblr media
You say that with annoyance like I knew a year ago when I picked Stanford that you were going.
Tumblr media
All the things you have to say, and not once did you ever mention your choice of college? I thought you mentioned you were trying to find a close college???
I was trying to find a second choice at one point, yes. Crazy enough, that idea fell through when my last relationship did.
[Curses to Lucy and Maddox. All the curses to Lucy and Maddox. She doesn’t even say anything. She just turns forward.]
Stanford’s not a small campus, Carmen. We’ll probably never see each other if that’s what you’re concerned with.
Why would I care if I saw you in passing? [Because you would. Honestly. Stop the lies.]
You tell me. You’re the one up-in-arms about it. [He rolls his eyes.]
I’m fine. [Except now she’ll have to deal with your jealoUS SELF for 4+ more yEARS, GOD ALMIGHTY HELP HER.]
Tumblr media
Yeah. I see that.
Tumblr media
Stop being sarcastic with me.
If you’ve got an issue with it, then stop talking to me at all.
Fine with me. I like you better when we’re not talking anyway.
Tumblr media
Same here. [The lies. You like her at any time, because you’re a stupid idiot.]
Tumblr media
[Let’s not pretend like Julian and Sophie didn’t hear any of that. Because I’m sure they heard at least a little, and they’re just acting like they didn’t. Ya know. For the privacy of the kiddos. But, ya know, Julian’s a great big brother, so I’m sure he’ll use it to bother Jordan at some point in the near future. Make no mistake.
It is here, in the midst of the quietness of this side of the table, that the youngins are finally honing in on the conversation between the parents. Ryder here is talking.]
You’re payed up till tomorrow, yes?
Correct.
That settles it then. Tomorrow you three officially become our guests.
[Jordan sits up straight in his seat, as he probably slouched down in it once he’d finished with Carmen.] Pardon?
They’re going to stay with us in the condo, son.
[I’m sure both Jarmen’s minds go screEEEEECH as soon as that is heard. Probably for completely different reasons, as well.] really
We have two extra rooms, and I’d like for them to be able to enjoy themselves a bit longer.
... really.
Tumblr media
Get a hold of yourself, Jordan. You’re being rude.
... Sorry. [He slouches in his seat again, and the adults go back to ignoring that side of the table.]
Nice acting job there, Jordan.
Tumblr media
Oh, leave him alone, Julian.
Tumblr media
Refrain from fist-pumping at the table.
Come on, honey.
Right, right. [To Carmen.] We all look forward having you as our guest, Miss Rivera.
It’ll be fun, I’m sure.
Thank you. I’m sure it’ll be the most fun I’ve ever had.
Tumblr media
[So now, since Julian’s on the other side of Carmen, he leans in to whisper, because he doesn’t want the wife to hear, ya know.] And I don’t want to speak for someone, since that seems to get him testy, but I can say with confidence that that certain someone is really putting on for Dad’s benefit.
Tumblr media
I can hear you.
Tumblr media
You’re welcome for the free hearing test then, buddy!
Ffffff--...
Ah, watch your language. The parents are right over there.
[Carmen giggles, because boy, Julian is just the most. And she likes it. She likes it a lot. The giggles make Jordan turn away, because, again, jealous bastard. But, ya know.] Give him a break~.
Tumblr media
Can’t. It’s my birthright to make fun when he’s completely out of his league.
Tumblr media
You still think that, huh~?
More so now, actually.
Hm. Well, thanks.
Tumblr media
My pleasure~.
Tumblr media
[Okay, and that’s as far as he can compliment another girl while he’s right beside his wife, so back they go to paying attention to other things, but Carmen’s all aflutter in a way she’s never been before. So, there we go. Okay, the end.]

My Innings as Commander 27 Mtn Arty Brigade (Part 1)
I departed from Wellington after the customary farewell in the first week of Aug 2000. My thoughts during the journey upto Pune, fluctuated between fond memories of my professionally enriching tenure of two years at the Staff College & the expectations of my next challenging tenure as the Brigade Commander. I availed my “Joining Time” at Pune and discussed our future options with the family members for their move as a family to, only after our Brigade would move back to it's permanent location at Bagrakote. After a well deserved break of 10 days, I left Pune for Jammu via Delhi. I planned my arrival at Jammu to coincide with the Independence Day.
Thereafter, I was escorted in a special convoy upto 27 Mountain Artillery Brigade, located on the outskirts of Pathankot. The welcome ceremony in the Brigade HQ was indeed special, since I was returning to the Gunners family after a gap of six years. I was introduced to the Staff Officers of the Brigade HQ & all my Commanding Officers. Next three days were busy in the handing/taking over procedures. Finally, on 19 Aug 2000, my predecessor accompanied me to the Division HQ for my formal welcome by the GOC 27 Mountain Division. I was promoted by the GOC who complimented my selection to the coveted rank of Brigadier, attained by just 10% of the officers in any Batch!! He wished me the best of luck in shouldering my higher responsibilities and expressed confidence that the Artillery Brigade would continue to excel in the "Striking Lion Division".
My first priority was to visit my Brigade HQ & all my Regiments and the supporting sub-units. The program for these visits had been prepared already which was just awaiting my approval. I considered it an opportunity to be briefed by each CO about our operational role and get a first look about the living conditions of all the Units  since the entire Brigade was in a tented camp layout. The Units were in the final phase of training prior to the Practice Camps scheduled to be conducted in Kalith Field Firing Ranges in Sep. I dedicated three days for completion of these visits as per the program and felt so happy interacting with each CO and his team of officers & JCOs. The standard of routine administration in each Unit  was very commendable, despite the constraints.  I reminded myself to resist any  temptation of ordering any drastic changes or initiate any new procedures within the first two months. I had decided to view every situation from a higher pedestal & take judicious decisions after consultation with my Staff Officers & the COs.
Next month, the whole Brigade, deployed in Kalith Ranges, located 45 kms from Jammu, for Field-firings & Practice Camps. The standard of deployment and firing of Guns was outstanding. At the end of all the Practice Camps, we conducted the Technical Day during which all the COs of all Units in the Division witnessed the display of Firepower of 90 guns of my Brigade. It gave all of us a tremendous feeling of confidence and assurance of our Combat potential. I conveyed my congratulations to all my Regiments, on the radio set, in the traditional Gunner style --- “Good Shooting from Bull!!” On conclusion of this major training event, we returned to Pathankot. Thereafter, each Regiment participated in the Collective Training Exercise with the affiliated Infantry Brigade.
In mid-Oct, Sanjivani along with Ashvini and Aditya came to Pathankot during Diwali vacation. It was destined that we would celebrate Diwali Festival with the Gunner Family within the Camp environment. Next day, we proceeded to Amritsar which was just 100 kms away. Our first visit  was obviously the Golden Temple. It was an overwhelming experience as we sought the blessing of Satnam Waheguru followed by the customary Langar. In the evening, we visited Jallianwala Bagh & witnessed an impressive Sound and Light show.

Next day, was spent in local sightseeing & savoring Punjabi cuisine. In the evening, we attended the magnificent ‘Beating the Retreat’ ceremony at the Wagah-Attari Border. The pomp and pageantry of the ceremony showcasing the change of guard was truly an amazing spectacle. The most captivating moment was the simultaneous lowering of the National Flags at sunset,  closing the gates on both sides of the border followed by the illumination display amidst thunderous chorus of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’. Next morning, we returned to Pathankot with a bundle of memories of our inspiring trip to Amritsar.

Soon, after celebrating Ashvini’s birthday, Sanjivani & the children returned to Pune for resumption of their academic sessions.  In mid-Nov, we were delighted to receive the much awaited orders from Army HQ pertaining to our move back to the permanent locations. I conveyed this good news to Sanjivani & the children who were really excited to prepare for their move as well. The move of 27 Mountain Division was to be carried out by military special trains for which we had to project the specific requirement of rolling stock.
In case of the Artillery Brigade, we prepared an elaborate plan for the move of all the Regiments to respective locations. It was a complex exercise to plan the move of one Regiment each to Barrackpore & Kanchrapara (near Kolkata), one Regiment each to Sevoke Road & Oodlabari (near Siliguri), a Regiment to Panagarh (about 150 km from Kolkata) & the Brigade HQ and the Signal Company & Field Workshop to Bagrakote. Separate plans were prepared by the Division HQ, all the Infantry Brigades & the supporting Units for moving back to their respective locations. The final move orders  were received from Army HQ. The execution of move was carried out systematically and completed by end of the year. It was indeed a massive logistic experience involving move by military special trains, from different entraining stations near Pathankot to multiple detraining stations in West Bengal.
Just before leaving Pathankot, I got a chance to visit my parent Regiment (98 Field Regiment) which was located at Dehradun. The warmth and hospitality extended to me by the Jat Balwan family was indeed commendable. I felt so nostalgic as I renewed my association after a gap of six years. It was indeed a journey down memory lane!!
Thereafter, I travelled by air from Jammu to Delhi & onwards from Delhi to Bagdogra. Subsequent  travel upto Bagrakote was refreshing, specially after crossing the Tiger Bridge,  which connects West Bengal with the North Eastern states. Bagrakote was a small Army campus at the foothills of undulating ridgelines. I was particularly impressed when I entered my fully furnished residence, traditionally designated as the “Gun House”.  My first reaction was to take several photos of my beautiful residence and send them to Pune by speed post (since WhatsApp technology did not exist at the time). It facilitated a virtual tour of our new Home, which further triggered the desire of my family members to come to Bagrakote as soon as possible.

After the initial settling down process, I went to the Division HQ at Kalimpong for an operational briefing, since I had never served in this Sector. Thereafter, I proceeded for my familiarisation recce in Nathu La Sector of  East Sikkim. The recce was completed in one week, in high altitude terrain during the snowfall season. Subsequently, I visited all my Regiments sequentially, as per the dispersed locations. It enabled me to  gain first hand knowledge about various problems being faced by each Unit. I focused my attention on the improvement of administration  and welfare of all troops & families. Thus, I could allot funds for urgent repairs and new projects for improvement of habitat in each location.
Tumblr media
In the last week of Mar, I went on casual leave to Pune and returned along with Sanjivani and Aditya. Our luggage took a long time to reach because of the move across the country. Ashvini and Nandini shifted to a Girl’s Hostel and were planning to join us later. On return to Bagrakote, I got involved in preparing for the forthcoming War Game and Operational discussion which was to be conducted at Kalimpong. It was a major event in which all Brigade Commanders and Commanding Officers had to participate. Hence, I proceeded to Kalimpong for another week, leaving Sanjivani with the responsibility of settling down in our new abode.
                                 Our Beautiful ‘Gun House’
We could not move to Pathankot along with Vivek in August, since the Artillery Brigade was doing the Annual Practice Camps & collective training. Entire 27 Mountain Division was awaiting orders for move back to the permanent location. Moreover, Ashvini and Nandini were already pursuing their college education and Aditya was in the Army Public School, Pune. We felt happy when the Brigade returned to Bagrakote in end of Dec. Consequent to this news, we decided to shift Ashvini & Nandini into Paying Guest accommodation, at a central location in Deccan Gymkhana. Thereafter, in the last week of March, only Vivek &  myself, Aditya and my mother-in-law (Badi Mummy) moved to Bagrakote.  Our long journey was very entertaining, particularly because our pet dog (Maxi) also travelled with us. Incidentally, the journey involved all modes of transport: by air from Mumbai to Kolkata, by overnight train upto New Jalpaiguri (NJP) and by road till our destination. The road journey was specially enchanting after we crossed the Tiger Bridge (also called Coronation Bridge) on the Teesta River. The view of the valley, forests and the tea gardens astride the road was so fascinating. Finally, after two hours, we reached the “Gun House” & were welcomed formally in the Brigade Officers Mess. It was a unique feeling to be called the “First Lady” once again!!
Tumblr media
Our Bungalow was unique in design & internal layout. It was constructed on stilts, had wooden flooring, wooden walls, wooden roof with a false wooden ceiling and wooden furniture! At the entrance, there was a huge lawn having a waterfall, a small pond & a Gazebo. In the backyard, there were several Litchi trees and a Bamboo grove. The Officers Mess & the Guest rooms were just adjacent to our residence. We were thrilled to observe the scenic view of the ridges & spurs, the riverfront and the tea gardens in close proximity. It was a privilege to have a guard of 12 soldiers at the “Gun House”, who were on duty 24x7. In addition, there was a cook & the Buddy from 98 Field Regiment (Hav Khajan Singh), who provided necessary assistance. I realised that I will have to get used to these facilities gradually, while settling down to our new lifestyle in the lap of nature.
On completion of the War Game, I returned from Kalimpong. I was impressed to see the transformation of the “Gun House” after completion of the settling down process. It appeared that the stage was set for Ashvini and Nandini’s arrival during their Summer Vacation. Meanwhile, I planned the itinerary for our family visits to Nathu La, Darjeeling and Kalimpong. Simultaneously, I prepared the schedule of my Adm Inspections of all the Units during May/June. Sanjivani visited the family quarters of the Brigade Camp and interacted with all the families when I was at Kalimpong. In addition, she visited Army School, Bagrakote and laid out a plan for further improvement of the School. We now awaited the arrival of Ashvini & Nandini and were at a stage of ‘Get, Set, Go’ for our tour to pristine Sikkim.
                                                                                    To be continued...

CITY CHEAT SHEET: BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA
BY NICOLE BOWMAN
Tumblr media
The Scout Guide Baton Rouge Editor Rachel Ransom photographed by Quinn Miller at Bistro Byronz.
A trip to Louisiana’s capital city is an experience like no other, filled with unique local customs and lots of southern hospitality. Whether you’re in town for a football game at Tiger Stadium, business, or pleasure, you’ll find plenty to do and enjoy, and unless you’re rooting for the opposing team, you can expect a warm and enthusiastic welcome.
“We celebrate everything to the fullest, whether it’s the local arts scene or LSU. People in Baton Rouge are passionate,” says The Scout Guide Baton Rouge Editor Rachel Ransom, who has lived in Baton Rouge her whole life. “We don’t need a reason to celebrate, either. It could be a Thursday afternoon and the sun is out, we will have a party to celebrate.”
Here, Ransom shares her tips for touring her hometown. Read on for what to do and where to “geaux.”
WHERE TO STAY
If you’re going to Baton Rouge during college football season and want to see an LSU game (which Rachel, a diehard Tigers fan and LSU alum, highly recommends), then you’ll want to stay at The Cook Hotel (3848 West Lakeshore Drive). This Hilton property is located right on campus, making it perfect for game day since you can walk from the hotel to the stadium.
For an off-campus option, Rachel recommends checking into the elegant Watermark Hotel (150 3rd Street) in downtown Baton Rouge, one of the most historic buildings in town. Angela Gregory, a famous New Orleans artist, painted the incredible murals on the hotel’s ceilings.
For something a little more off-the-beaten path, Rachel suggests The Inn at Houmas House Plantation and Gardens (40136 Highway 942, Darrow, Louisiana), which is about a 30-minute drive from Baton Rouge. This historic sugar plantation features daily tours of its stately 16-room mansion and vast native gardens, plus five different restaurants and a row of quaint guest cottages.
WHERE TO EAT
“Crawfish is huge down here,” Rachel says of the Baton Rouge culinary scene. “Going to a crawfish boil at someone’s house during crawfish season in Baton Rouge is absolutely wonderful, with kids running around and adults hanging out.” Crawfish season usually starts in late February or early March, but even if you’re not going to a boil at someone’s house, you can still get a taste of the tradition thanks to local favorite Sammy’s Grill (8635 Highland Road). “This is the best crawfish in Baton Rouge,” Rachel says. She recommends picking up your order and bringing it back to your hotel for a picnic (most hotels in town have plenty of outdoor seating). Just lay down your newspaper and enjoy. “Nobody will look at you sideways because it’s Sammy’s,” says Rachel.
For lunch, Rachel’s favorite place is Bistro Byronz (5412 Government Street), a stylish spot where she says to order the turkey burger au gruyere with sweet potatoes. Interested in sampling some Cajun-Mexican cuisine? The Velvet Cactus (7655 Old Hammond Highway) has outdoor seating, games playing on its big-screen TVs, margaritas for all, and amazing chipotle cheese grits.
If you’re looking for an authentic LSU dining experience, grab a breakfast sandwich at Tiger Deauxnuts(5162 Government Street). The boudin and egg on a savory donut bun is not to be missed. After the deauxnuts, balance yourself out with a raw, cold-pressed juice from The Big Squeezy (multiple locations). You can find Rachel there every Friday for $5 juice. For a hearty lunch near the university, Rachel recommends a burger at Fat Cow Burgers and Salads (4350 Highland Road B1), right next to campus.
When you’re ready to unwind with a cocktail, hit the patio at The Overpass Merchant (2904 Perkins Road) for a house Moscow mule or a local beer. Rachel’s favorite is the Abita Andygator.
A GUIDE TO GAME DAY
“A Saturday night home football game at LSU is maybe one of the best experiences of your life,” Rachel says. “It’s absolutely electric.” So, how do you approach Tiger football like a local?
Sartorially speaking, it’s best to be in purple and gold on game day. You’ll also want to put in a little effort. “We dress up down here,” says Rachel. “The game is an opportunity to wear your pearls and look nice.” Night games can get pretty fancy, but a purple dress with cowboy boots or wedges should do the trick. For men, purple polos will work, but if you really want to go native, try some purple pants or shorts with the gold LSU tiger embroidered all over them, which you can find at Carriages (7620 Old Hammond Highway), a local men’s store. Day games have a looser unofficial dress code—shorts and a nice blouse would do nicely, pearls optional. (A word to the wise: Some games are color-coded, meaning all fans wear the same color, so check LSU’s calendar before you pack!)
If you’re going to Baton Rouge for a game, you’re going to want to tailgate, too. Just remember, this stadium isn’t known as Death Valley for nothing. If you’re rooting for the opposition (and specifically, the Florida Gators), then go at your own risk. LSU’s stadium consistently ranks among ESPN’s list of the top scariest venues for opposing teams. That said, the crowd can be warm and friendly to visitors. In fact, according to Rachel, you can join almost any tailgate by offering some beer and a friendly greeting.
The place to be for tailgating is the Parade Grounds, where ESPN sets up in front of the campus clock tower. Pay a visit to Mike the Tiger, an actual tiger who is fed raw meat in the shape of the opposing team’s mascot prior to every home game, in his yard. Between beers and tiger sightings, pop into Walk-on’s (3838 Burbank Drive) to see highlights of other games and check scores if you’re interested. Finally, before you go into the stadium, join the crowd up on the hill to watch the LSU band and Tiger Girls march by on their way down into Death Valley.
LOCAL ATTRACTIONS
Baton Rouge has two state capitol buildings, both of which are worth visiting. The Louisiana State Capitol building (900 North 3rd Street) is the tallest capitol building in the nation, and today you can go all the way to the top to see the entire city. The Old State Capitol Building (100 North Boulevard) is also worth stopping by due to its medieval castle-like appearance and impressive stained glass. While there, take a moment to relax on the beautiful lawn, where you might just spot a bride and groom at this popular location for wedding photography.
While college football is a big draw, LSU is a beautiful place to visit no matter the season. The LSU Lakes surrounding the campus and bring bikers, joggers, and strollers out all year round, and the walk there from mid-city is lovely. The best time to visit the lakes is sunset, when you can almost always catch a breeze.
Last but not least, for live music, local food, and locally handcrafted goods, stop in to Mid City Makers Market (541 South Eugene Street), where Rachel’s favorite artisan is local jewelry maker Mimosa Handcrafted. Pick up one of her locally inspired pieces, like a pelican cuff, to bring a piece of Baton Rouge home with you.
WHERE TO SHOP
Baton Rouge is home to a host of eclectic, locally owned shops where you can find special and unique items. For this reason, it’s a great place to go shopping for gifts (especially if you know any Tigers fans).
The Royal Standard (multiple locations) has an eclectic selection of high-end gift items, and lots of options for your home as well. Pop into Mint (5720 Corporate Boulevard) to shop for home decor, art, and shoes—a pretty perfect combination! Red Onion (15680 Perkins Road), known for home decor and unique floral arrangements, is worth a visit just to peruse the shop and grounds.
For fun, hit Giggles (8201 Village Plaza Court), a toy and candy store that’s perfect for souvenirs for the kids. Bring home a taste of Baton Rouge via seasonings from Red Stick Spice Company (660 Jefferson Highway), which also has an impressive selection of teas and olive oils.
For women’s clothing, Rachel recommends Chattabox Boutique (17650 Highland Road) for glamorous pieces for day or night, and Eros (7425 Corporate Boulevard) for chic everyday clothing and accessories. Naturally, both carry plenty of purple and gold options! Edit by LBP (3535 Perkins Road) is a must-visit too, for their highly curated collection of fashionable finds housed in a charming building.
