💃🏼Girl before a mirror- THE REMIX 📝 . This is where it all began. Inspired by a Picasso piece I have always loved (Girl before a mirror) I painted this in 2010 while pregnant with my firstborn. I had been painting for years before that but I didn’t really know my style yet. I thought about what inspired me. Picasso one of the greats and his way of viewing the world fragmented, and the birth of graffiti B-boys and B-girls covering the walls of the Bronx in the 70s-80s. Two styles on opposite ends of a spectrum I would merge. This is a portrait of adult me pregnant staring in the mirror. The reflection is 12 year old me because I still felt like that kid; except I was now in the real world and needed to figure out my way. This is where i started morphing my characters into what they are today. Can’t wait to look back in 10 years and see how far they’ve gone. ⏳🔥 . . . . #butterflymush #evolve #art #evolutionofmush #mushgirls #girlart #femaleartist #painting #mystory #girlbeforeamirror #picassoinspired (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/BnxI0c6BLnI/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=4o1qe705z693

Most of our pillow shams from Kashmir are inspired by the work of the late P. Picasso, and we really strive to build bridges between cultures and individuals by highlighting key moments in the human experience. We know that Picasso interest for African art was sparked by Henri Matisse who showed him a Mask from the Fon people of Dahomey (actual Benin) and the maiden on our package is Fon (1908). The Manjak embroidery on the scarf mimics the ones on the loincloth around her waist and the dragonfly, symbol of transcendence, brings everything together as One. And as always, “the medium is the message”.

Pablo Picasso, Girl Before a Mirror
I've always thought Picasso was overly celebrated but seeing his work closely blew me away. His work is so worthy of praise, especially “Girl Before a Mirror.” It's so eccentric with its beautifully conflicting patterns and just so nice to look at. Picasso brilliantly uses simple shapes and large brushstrokes to create this beautiful work of art and it makes the piece stand out. He does this all while encouraging the viewer to have to think deeply about what the art means since his strokes aren’t super specific. I also noticed he excluded unnecessary things and focused on the vitals, which we see since the piece isn’t extremely detailed. In the painting, I see the girl and the reflection. The girl is colorful with light colors; like pinks, yellows, and greens, however, the reflection has darker colors like dark red, dark green, and blacks. The painting also includes a front view and side view at the same time.
A lot of Picasso’s creative choices connect to many things, like the message of the piece. For example, the woman viewing herself as a darker image is very similar to how many people view themselves in the world. This makes a lot of sense because in my opinion, art (in any form) is a reflection of society, which is why so many people are moved emotionally and mentally by art. This also personally connects to me because, as most people have, I used to struggle with lots of insecurities. However, it is works much like this that have brought me to realize that the mirror will always portray a negative image if I have a negative image in my mind. As long as I focus on the positive, I can see what ever I want to see in the mirror.
As mentioned before, Picasso uses large brushstrokes and excludes unnecessary things, which he most likely did to give the picture the ability to have many different interpretations. In my opinion, the more detailed and specific the piece of art, the less room for interpretation. Picasso’s exclusion of extra things and focus on vital items allowed me to bring my attention to the most general message and venture off into my own understanding. The light colors on the girls face represent how the world sees her, while the reflection with dark colors shows how she sees herself.
To me, these colors show what the title says, but also clearly depict her viewing herself negatively. The colors in her face make me feel life, joy, and happiness but the darker colors in the mirror make me feel tense and down, so maybe the mirror shows how she truly feels on the inside, that is, unhappy, depressed, insecure. Or, if you want to take it in another direction, maybe she feels guilty about something and sees her true colors as sinister or evil.
This experience truly changed my perspective on Picasso and allowed me to see how much work he put into his art. I see that the little things an artist does can bring a lot of meaning to a piece. Picasso used large brushstrokes and very contrasting colors, some light and some dark. He used these elements to show the reader that the girl feel less than herself when she looks in the mirror, but also allows for a wide range of interpretation. I understand now just how much art, especially art like this, impacts the public.

1932→2020: Girl Before A Mirror
A marker of a great work of art is its timelessness. In JoAnne Artman Gallery, New York’s Fall 2020 exhibition, Yes, Masters: A MANthology, pays homage to the past by putting a present-day spin on age-old masterpieces. Daring to assume a different artistic paradigm that combines 20th century attitude with traditional European sensibility, the culmination is a shared dialogue challenging conventional narratives in art with expressive color and a focus on figuration. Playful and satirical, contemporary adaptations of art history merge the classical with the commodification of art in pop culture and mass media, all while bringing Old Masters into a new world.
Integrating palettes emblematic of various past art movements, artist James Wolanin infuses his portraits with the recognizable colorations of the Old Masters. Rendered in a precise, hard-edged style, using resin as a finish, Wolanin does not simply paint a scene, but constructs a fragment of narrative. Suggesting entire relationships and personalities through a character’s pose or glance, flat planes of color and a nod to minimalist tonal transitions help the works read on an abstract level, creating a deeper resonance between visual elements.
James Wolanin, Girl Before A Mirror (Picasso), 2020 Acrylic & Resin on Panel, 40 x 30 in.
“This new work freed me to explore some different styles, sent me down some paths that I normally wouldn’t have traveled. What’s great is when push yourself out your comfort zone, some wonderful artistic breakthroughs begin to happen. Maybe some bits and pieces of these new works will find their way into some future paintings,” says Wolanin.
Channeling his pop sensibility, Wolanin appropriates Picasso’s Girl Before A Mirror, transforming it into a contemporary revival.
“Pop culture of the 1960’s has had a lasting effect on me culturally and artistically. Not necessarily the political turbulence of that period, but more of revisiting a time of innocence. Although I was young, these early childhood memories of this era have endured to the point where it’s become my primary artistic inspiration.”

Picasso’s original Girl Before a Mirror was painted in 1932. Depicting his muse, Marie Therese Walter, Picasso paints a woman looking in the mirror at her reflection. On top of this duality of imagery, the faces of both the woman and the reflection are bifurcated into different colorations, which suggests a duality of nature within both the girl and her reflected image. In a colorful palette of pinks, yellows, and greens juxtaposed with vibrant reds and dark blacks, the skin and face of the girl in side profile is delicately beautiful in contrast with the rest of the painting. In contrast, the reflected face is in a full frontal perspective, darkly colored with facial features that are much less traditionally beautiful. The mirror and the reflected subject suggest one possibility for her own view of herself.
In Wolanin’s version, his figure sees Picasso’s portrait of Marie Therese in her reflection. Although rendered in brighter colors indicative of Wolanin’s other oeuvre, he similarly includes the bold and patterned background of Picasso’s original. Gazing at her reflection, Wolanin’s interpretation alludes to the female figure not only looking at herself, but also looking back at the past. Using art history as a stepping-stone for newfound interpretations, Wolanin acknowledge the legacy of Pablo Picasso in his own modern and spirited anthology.
