Really underrated moment of DSMP is when Tommy tells the story of L’manburg + Pogtopia to Ghostbur.

It was the day before Tommy was exiled, and Tommy—nervous about what could happen and desperate to win Tubbo over—roped together a small group of people to help him craft a Drug to give to Tubbo, as a gift. Ghostbur was one of those people, and as Tommy rowed the two of them in a boat over to where they needed to be, Tommy told Ghostbur a story. Tommy made it sound almost fairytale-ish; he knew Ghostbur struggled to hold onto information, so he made the story sound fanciful and almost childish, because he wanted Ghostbur to take it in. Tommy didn’t even use the words “L’manburg” “Tommy” “Wilbur” or anything else that would give away Exactly What Story He Was Telling; instead he was making it sound like just a story. Not history, necessarily, but a story. That’s what Tommy thought would help Ghostbur understand better.

Minutes go by, and as soon as Tommy finally finishes his story, Ghostbur immediately says, “that sounds like the story of L’manburg.”

And Tommy stops, and says, “oh” because he hadn’t expected that, had he? He thought that Ghostbur couldn’t understand things like that. He even started to say as much, before Ghostbur interrupted him, saying, “I’m not stupid.”

Ghostbur then further explained exactly what he struggled to remember (bad things) but that he remembers and can understand other things extremely well, and is in fact familiar with a large portion of L’manburg’s story.

I find this moment very interesting for a lot of reasons. It’s insightful to hear Tommy tell the story, and hear how he himself views a lot of the events in the server’s history, and it’s incredibly fascinating to listen to his & Ghostbur’s exchange once the story is finished. Tommy told the story because he misunderstood Ghostbur’s memory issues/ability to understand & process information, and it ended up making Ghostbur feel like Tommy was speaking down to him, or treating him as if he was dumb or stupid. Tommy wasn’t trying to be mean, he wasn’t trying to make Ghostbur feel bad, but that’s what ended up happening. And instead of getting angry about this, Ghostbur instead helped Tommy understand that he can hold onto memories, he can hold onto information, he can learn and he can take things in and he can remember. He’s not stupid.

I think this is one of my favorite interactions between Ghostbur & Tommy. The communication and care they have for each other is insane, and honestly rare in media. Their friendship is in my opinion one of the best friendships in the whole series, and it’s a shame that it’s not talked about super often.
